Sein Roman "Die Leiden des jungen Werthers" machte ihn in Europa ber?hmt. Selbst Napoleon bat ihn zu einer Audienz anl?sslich des Erfurter F?rstenkongresses. Im Bunde mit Schiller und gemeinsam mit Herder und Wieland verk?rperte er die Weimarer Klassik. Die "Wilhelm-Meister"-Romane wurden zu beispielgebenden Vorl?ufern deutschsprachiger K?nstler- und Bildungsromane. Sein "Faust" errang den Ruf als das bedeutendste Werk der deutschsprachigen Literatur.
