|

A Notable Social Studies Trade Book for Young People 2017

In 1921, four men ventured into the Arctic for a top-secret expedition: an attempt to claim uninhabited Wrangel Island in northern Siberia for Great Britain. With the men was a young Inuit woman named Ada Blackjack, who had signed on as cook and seamstress to earn money to care for her sick son. Conditions soon turned dire for the team when they were unable to kill enough game to survive. Three of the men tried to cross the frozen Chukchi Sea for help but were never seen again, leaving Ada with one remaining team member who soon died of scurvy. Determined to be reunited with her son, Ada learned to survive alone in the icy world by trapping foxes, catching seals, and avoiding polar bears. After she was finally rescued in August 1923, after two years total on the island, Ada became a celebrity, with newspapers calling her a real "female Robinson Crusoe." The first young adult book about Blackjack's remarkable story, Marooned in the Arctic includes sidebars on relevant topics of interest to teens, including the use cats on ships, the phenomenon known as Arctic hysteria, and aspects of Inuit culture and beliefs. With excerpts from diaries, letters, and telegrams; historic photos; a map; source notes; and a bibliography, this is an indispensible resource for any young adventure lover, classroom, or library.

The Female as Subject Reading and Writing in Early Modern Japan【
|

The Female as Subject presents 11 essays by an international group of scholars from Europe, Japan, and North America examining what women of different social classes read, what books were produced specifically for women, and the genres in which women themselves chose to write. The authors explore the different types of education women obtained and the levels of literacy they achieved, and they uncover women’s participation in the production of books, magazines, and speeches. The resulting depiction of women as readers and writers is also enhanced by thirty black-and-white illustrations.

For too long, women have been largely absent from accounts of cultural production in early modern Japan. By foregrounding women, the essays in this book enable us to rethink what we know about Japanese society during these centuries. The result is a new history of women as readers, writers, and culturally active agents.

The Female as Subject is essential reading for all students and teachers of Japan during the Edo and Meiji periods. It also provides valuable comparative data for scholars of the history of literacy and the book in East Asia.

The prospect of flying in space quickly became her obsession.

While the American and international media spun the shocking story of a "woman astronaut" program, Jackie and Jerrie struggled to gain control of the narrative, each hoping to turn the rumored program into their own ideal realityーan issue that ultimately went all the way to Congress.

This dual biography of audacious trailblazers Jackie Cochran and Jerrie Cobb presents these fascinating and fearless women in all their glory and grit, using their stories as guides through the shifting social, political, and technical landscape of the time.

Herman Cyril McNeile (1888-1937) commonly known as H. C. McNeile or Sapper, was a British soldier and author. Drawing on his experiences in the trenches during the First World War, he started writing short stories and getting them published in the Daily Mail. After the war McNeile left the army and continued writing, although he changed from war stories to thrillers. In 1920 he published Bulldog Drummond, whose eponymous hero became his best-known creation. The character was based on McNeile himself, on his friend Gerard Fairlie and on English gentlemen generally. Drummond is a First World War veteran, brutalised by his experiences in the trenches and bored with his post-war lifestyle. He publishes an advertisement looking for adventure, and soon finds himself embroiled in a series of exploits, many of which involve Carl Petersonーwho becomes his nemesisーand Peterson's mistress, the femme fatale Irma. McNeile interspersed his Drummond work with other detective novels and story collections that included two characters who appeared as protagonists in their own works, Jim Maitland and Ronald Standish. H. C. McNeile thrillers are a continuation of his war stories, with upper class Englishmen defending England from foreigners plotting against it. Cinema is full of neurotic personalities, but few things are more transfixing than a woman losing her mind onscreen. Horror as a genre provides the most welcoming platform for these histrionics: crippling paranoia, desperate loneliness, masochistic death-wishes, dangerous obsessiveness, apocalyptic hysteria. Unlike her male counterpart - ???the eccentric??? - the female neurotic lives a shamed existence, making these films those rare places where her destructive emotions get to play. HOUSE OF PSYCHOTIC WOMEN is an examination of these characters through a daringly personal autobiographical lens. Anecdotes and memories interweave with film history, criticism, trivia and confrontational imagery to create a reflective personal history and a celebration of female madness, both onscreen and off. This critically-acclaimed publication is packed with rare images that combine with family photos and artifacts to form a titillating sensory overload, with a filmography that traverses the acclaimed and the obscure in equal measure. Films covered include The Entity, Paranormal Activity, Singapore Sling, 3 Women, Toys Are Not for Children, Repulsion, Let???s Scare Jessica to Death, The Haunting of Julia, Secret Ceremony, Cutting Moments, Out of the Blue, Mademoiselle, The Piano Teacher, Possession, Antichrist and hundreds more. Prior to this ebook edition, Kier-La's highly acclaimed book has already been issued twice in hardcover and twice in paperback, garnering extensive press coverage. Endorsement including the following: ???God, this woman can write, with a voice and intellect that???s so new. The truth in the most deadly unique way I???ve ever read.?? ??“ Ralph Bakshi, director of ???Fritz the Cat???, ???Heavy Traffic???, ???Lord of the Rings???, etc. ???Fascinating, engaging and lucidly written: an extraordinary blend of deeply researched academic analysis and revealing memoir.?? ??“ Iain Banks, author of ???The Wasp Factory???画面が切り替わりますので、しばらくお待ち下さい。 ※ご購入は、楽天kobo商品ページからお願いします。※切り替わらない場合は、こちら をクリックして下さい。 ※このページからは注文できません。

Show Me Don't Tell Me ebooks: Book Nineteen - The Female Mystique【電子書籍】[ Allan Brandon Hill ]

Show Me Don't Tell Me eBooks are designed to be the digital version of traditional coffee table books. Their modest purpose is to commemorate the work of accomplished artists without excessive verbal commentary; to serve as a handy reference and guide in the intelligent use of color, line, form and composition for art students, art educators, and everyone interested in art as a means of personal expression; and, to present extraordinary fine art in order to expand the global gallery by offering exemplary artwork to interested persons around the world.

If you are an aspiring artist, the examples in this Series represent an eclectic mix of subject matter from abstracts and landscapes to portraits and people. Each is offered to encourage you to use your intuition to guide your artistic creative vision; that is, look at a given thing and ‘see’ its elements. Since there is no one right way to be creative, this series is intended to help you speak in your own unique voice; to express your creative view of the world through your particular lens; to express yourself in an unfettered way, unencumbered by the constraints of technique or method.

We believe that your innate ability to ‘see’ is sufficient to unlock the creativity within you. Although learning "technique" is important, the journey to discover your inner artist begins with replacing ‘looking’ with ‘seeing,’ and ‘thinking’ with ‘feeling.’ Thus, our mantra: "Show Me, Don't Tell Me."

jillin' off in juan's chair female masturbation (erotica for men)【電子書籍】[ xu xin xia ]
|

Juan had two chairs. I sat in the first, large wooden chair reading his Bible and posing innocently. Placing my bare naked feet where feet were not supposed to go: on and over the armrests, against the seat cushion, the backrest, and the wall. After an hour of reading, I went and sat in the second, yellow cushy chair. My pre-sex appetizer was over. Erotica for men. (female masturbation).

Excerpt:

First, I want to say, he isn't, really, my daddy. He is just a man married to my mom. Her second marriage.

I told myself I was going to be good. That was the Christian part of me. But being a Christian does not stop being horny. And I felt the horniness coming two days earlier when I knew I would be home.

I was house-sitting as my parents spent a week in Spain absorbing our family's genealogy. My mom and stepdad are Spanish.

But my biological father? I don't know. Maybe Norwegian, Swedish, or Finnish. Which would account for my strawberries and cream complexion. And maybe how small my butt is.

My stepdad calls mom and me the bubble butt twins. Which is hard to believe. My mom's butt is twice as big as mine. But maybe as I grow older it will swell up and poof out.

I sometimes bend over and look at my behind in the mirror and shake my tight tiny rear. No, my butt does not jiggle. It is too small.

I have seen my stepdad pat my mom's rear sometimes. Not mine. But I wish he would.

My mom married my stepdad when I was sixteen. I'm nineteen now.

Nineteen and horny. Oh my, the horniness. Can't it stop already?

Horny for my stepfather. My daddy. Not actually, just technically.

His name is Juan. And I like him because he's a man. A huge man. Three hundred pounds of masculinity.
He wears a beard and is nothing but a bear. Hairy all over.

When we go places as a family, other men step aside. My daddy commands respect.

And that's the type of man I want. Someone who can protect me.

I heard Freckles, our cat, meow behind me. He was the reason for my house-sitting.

I lived an hour away at the University. It was spring break and well … I had no plans.

I told myself I was going to be good.

I picked up Freckles and rubbed him down. I was sure he missed me.

I had been standing and staring into the living room. Staring at my daddy's two chairs. An old wooden one and a large yellow cushiony thing.

No one sat in either one except for Juan and possibly guests.

They're too big for me, and Juan can't sit anywhere else.

Both chairs came from Juan's apartment before we all moved into this new house.

The chairs were comfortable for Juan, and I honestly liked watching him sit in them. They were his thrones.

This last winter when I did come home for the holiday and sat in his chair, I became excited. Sexually.

Maybe I missed home. Or maybe I was getting older and more independent. But thoughts began to race in my mind about my stepdad. Naughty girl thoughts.

The chairs smelled of Juan. Strong and powerful. And I wanted to sit in my stepdad's chairs a lot more.

If only my parents knew that I had begun to sit in his chairs. Quite often during the holiday season whenever they were away for a few hours.

And now I was house-sitting all alone.

What was I going to do? Be a good girl?

Ar'n't I a Woman?: Female Slaves in the Plantation South (Revised Edition)【電子書籍】[ Deborah Gray White ]

|

"One of those rare books that quickly became the standard work in its field." ーAnne Firor Scott, Duke University

Living with the dual burdens of racism and sexism, slave women in the plantation South assumed roles within the family and community that contrasted sharply with traditional female roles in the larger American society.

This revised edition of Ar'n't I a Woman? reviews and updates the scholarship on slave women and the slave family, exploring new ways of understanding the intersection of race and gender and comparing the myths that stereotyped female slaves with the realities of their lives. Above all, this groundbreaking study shows us how black women experienced freedom in the Reconstruction Southーtheir heroic struggle to gain their rights, hold their families together, resist economic and sexual oppression, and maintain their sense of womanhood against all odds.

Winner of the Letitia Woods Brown Memorial Book Prize awarded by the Association of Black Women Historians.
