Computability and Logic【電子書籍】[ George S. Boolos ]
|

Computability and Logic has become a classic because of its accessibility to students without a mathematical background and because it covers not simply the staple topics of an intermediate logic course, such as Godel's incompleteness theorems, but also a large number of optional topics, from Turing's theory of computability to Ramsey's theorem. This 2007 fifth edition has been thoroughly revised by John Burgess. Including a selection of exercises, adjusted for this edition, at the end of each chapter, it offers a simpler treatment of the representability of recursive functions, a traditional stumbling block for students on the way to the Godel incompleteness theorems. This updated edition is also accompanied by a website as well as an instructor's manual.

Ethnic Politics and State Power in Africa The Logic of the Coup-Civil War Trap【電子書籍】[ Philip Roessler ]
|

Why are some African countries trapped in vicious cycles of ethnic exclusion and civil war, while others experience relative peace? In this groundbreaking book, Philip Roessler addresses this question. Roessler models Africa's weak, ethnically-divided states as confronting rulers with a coup-civil war trap - sharing power with ethnic rivals is necessary to underwrite societal peace and prevent civil war, but increases rivals' capabilities to seize sovereign power in a coup d'?tat. How rulers respond to this strategic trade-off is shown to be a function of their country's ethnic geography and the distribution of threat capabilities it produces. Moving between in-depth case studies of Sudan and the Democratic Republic of the Congo based on years of field work and statistical analyses of powersharing, coups and civil war across sub-Saharan Africa, the book serves as an exemplar of the benefits of mixed methods research for theory-building and testing in comparative politics.

Brimming with visual examples of concepts, derivation rules, and proof strategies, this introductory text is ideal for students with no previous experience in logic. Symbolic Logic: Syntax, Semantics, and Proof introduces students to the fundamental concepts, techniques, and topics involved in deductive reasoning. Agler guides students through the basics of symbolic logic by explaining the essentials of two classical systems, propositional and predicate logic. Students will learn translation both from formal language into English and from English into formal language; how to use truth trees and truth tables to test propositions for logical properties; and how to construct and strategically use derivation rules in proofs. This text makes this often confounding topic much more accessible with step-by-step example proofs, chapter glossaries of key terms, hundreds of homework problems and solutions for practice, and suggested further readings.

Categories (Κατηγορ?αι) Exploring Reality through Aristotle's Categories: A Systematic Analysis of Ontology and Logic【電子書籍】[ Aristotle ]
|

In "Categories (???±????????????±?π)", Aristotle intricately categorizes different types of entities in the world, establishing a foundational framework for both philosophy and logic. The work examines how language and the concepts we use to denote objects can shape our understanding of reality itself, presenting a nuanced view of substance, quality, quantity, and relation. Through a meticulous and systematic approach, Aristotle employs a clear and concise literary style, providing insights that have influenced ontological and epistemological discussions throughout Western philosophy. This text serves as a cornerstone in the Aristotelian corpus, laying the groundwork for subsequent metaphysical inquiries. Aristotle, a prominent figure of the classical philosophical tradition, was a student of Plato and tutor to Alexander the Great. His wide-ranging interests in natural science, ethics, politics, and metaphysics are reflected in his works. "Categories" emerges from his endeavor to systematize human thought, exploring how classification enhances our comprehension of the world. Influenced by Socratic dialogues and his empirical observations, Aristotle's keen insights into language and classification are central to his philosophy. I highly recommend "Categories" to anyone interested in the evolution of philosophical thought or the foundations of logic. It not only enriches one'??s understanding of Aristotle's influence but also affirms the importance of categorization in shaping our perceptions. Engaging with this text is essential for students and scholars aiming to grasp the complexities of philosophical inquiry.

This book brings together in one place David Hitchcock’s most significant published articles on reasoning and argument. In seven new chapters he updates his thinking in the light of subsequent scholarship. Collectively, the papers articulate a distinctive position in the philosophy of argumentation.

Among other things, the author:

? develops an account of “material consequence” that permits evaluation of inferences without problematic postulation of unstated premises.

? updates his recursive definition of argument that accommodates chaining and embedding of arguments and allows any type of illocutionary act to be a conclusion.

? advances a general theory of relevance.

? provides comprehensive frameworks for evaluating inferences in reasoning by analogy, means-end reasoning, and appeals to considerations or criteria.

? argues that none of the forms of arguing ad hominem is a fallacy.

? describes proven methods of teaching critical thinking effectively.

The Oxford Handbook of Philosophy of Mathematics and Logic【
|

Mathematics and logic have been central topics of concern since the dawn of philosophy. Since logic is the study of correct reasoning, it is a fundamental branch of epistemology and a priority in any philosophical system. Philosophers have focused on mathematics as a case study for general philosophical issues and for its role in overall knowledge- gathering. Today, philosophy of mathematics and logic remain central disciplines in contemporary philosophy, as evidenced by the regular appearance of articles on these topics in the best mainstream philosophical journals; in fact, the last decade has seen an explosion of scholarly work in these areas. This volume covers these disciplines in a comprehensive and accessible manner, giving the reader an overview of the major problems, positions, and battle lines. The 26 contributed chapters are by established experts in the field, and their articles contain both exposition and criticism as well as substantial development of their own positions. The essays, which are substantially self-contained, serve both to introduce the reader to the subject and to engage in it at its frontiers. Certain major positions are represented by two chapters--one supportive and one critical. The Oxford Handbook of Philosophy of Math and Logic is a ground-breaking reference like no other in its field. It is a central resource to those wishing to learn about the philosophy of mathematics and the philosophy of logic, or some aspect thereof, and to those who actively engage in the discipline, from advanced undergraduates to professional philosophers, mathematicians, and historians.

Strategy The Logic of War and Peace, Revised and Enlarged Edition【電子書籍】[ Edward N. Luttwak ]

“If you want peace, prepare for war.” “A buildup of offensive weapons can be purely defensive.” “The worst road may be the best route to battle.” Strategy is made of such seemingly self-contradictory propositions, Edward Luttwak showsーthey exemplify the paradoxical logic that pervades the entire realm of conflict. In this widely acclaimed work, now revised and expanded, Luttwak unveils the peculiar logic of strategy level by level, from grand strategy down to combat tactics. Having participated in its planning, Luttwak examines the role of air power in the 1991 Gulf War, then detects the emergence of “post-heroic” war in Kosovo in 1999ーan American war in which not a single American soldier was killed. In the tradition of Carl von Clausewitz, Strategy goes beyond paradox to expose the dynamics of reversal at work in the crucible of conflict. As victory is turned into defeat by over-extension, as war brings peace by exhaustion, ordinary linear logic is overthrown. Citing examples from ancient Rome to our own days, from Barbarossa and Pearl Harbor down to minor combat affrays, from the strategy of peace to the latest operational methods of war, this book by one of the world’s foremost authorities reveals the ultimate logic of military failure and success, of war and peace.

The History of Philosophical and Formal Logic introduces ideas and thinkers central to the development of philosophical and formal logic. From its Aristotelian origins to the present-day arguments, logic is broken down into four main time periods:

Antiquity and the Middle Ages (Aristotle and The Stoics)
The early modern period (Bolzano, Boole)
High modern period (Frege, Peano & Russell and Hilbert)
Early 20th century (Godel and Tarski)

Each new time frame begins with an introductory overview highlighting themes and points of importance. Chapters discuss the significance and reception of influential works and look at historical arguments in the context of contemporary debates. To support independent study, comprehensive lists of primary and secondary reading are included at the end of chapters, along with exercises and discussion questions.

By clearly presenting and explaining the changes to logic across the history of philosophy, The History of Philosophical and Formal Logic constructs an easy-to-follow narrative. This is an ideal starting point for students looking to understand the historical development of logic.

A Tale of Discrete Mathematics A Journey Through Logic, Reasoning, Structures and Graph Theory【電子書籍】[ Joseph Khoury ]
|

Topics covered in Discrete Mathematics have become essential tools in many areas of studies in recent years. This is primarily due to the revolution in technology, communications, and cyber security. The book treats major themes in a typical introductory modern Discrete Mathematics course: Propositional and predicate logic, proof techniques, set theory (including Boolean algebra, functions and relations), introduction to number theory, combinatorics and graph theory.

An accessible, precise, and comprehensive approach is adopted in the treatment of each topic. The ability of abstract thinking and the art of writing valid arguments are emphasized through detailed proof of (almost) every result. Developing the ability to think abstractly and roguishly is key in any areas of science, information technology and engineering. Every result presented in the book is followed by examples and applications to consolidate its comprehension. The hope is that the reader ends up developing both the abstract reasoning as well as acquiring practical skills.

All efforts are made to write the book at a level accessible to first-year students and to present each topic in a way that facilitates self-directed learning. Each chapter starts with basic concepts of the subject at hand and progresses gradually to cover more ground on the subject. Chapters are divided into sections and subsections to facilitate readings. Each section ends with its own carefully chosen set of practice exercises to reenforce comprehension and to challenge and stimulate readers.

As an introduction to Discrete Mathematics, the book is written with the smallest set of prerequisites possible. Familiarity with basic mathematical concepts (usually acquired in high school) is sufficient for most chapters. However, some mathematical maturity comes in handy to grasp some harder concepts presented in the book.

Contents:

Propositional Logic: The Foundation of Mathematical Reasoning

Set Theory and Introduction to Boolean Algebra: A Na?ve Approach

Prove It: Mathematical Proof Techniques

Introduction to Predicate Logic: One Step Further

Functions: Back to the Basics

Elementary Number Theory

Binary Relations

Basic Combinatorics: The Art of Counting Without Counting

Basics of Graph Theory

More on Graph Theory

Trees

Readership: Undergraduate first-year and second-year students in mathematics, computer science, general science, physics and engineering. Anyone interested in learning the foundation of Mathematics.
Key Features:

Early introduction to the language of mathematics. Perhaps, one of the important features that sets this textbook apart from other textbooks the introduction of logic and mathematical reasoning at an early stage. A clear and thorough understanding of mathematical logic is key to fully grasp any mathematical concept. The author's experience in teaching some "transitional" courses like real analysis or abstract algebra shows that students' difficulties are not so much in grasping the theoretical concepts, but rather in properly expressing their reasoning and understanding of statements. A typical example is the confusion between the hypothesis and the conclusion in an implication

Introduction to algorithms. The book contains several important algorithms in various topics. It is not very common for a typical Discrete Mathematics book to mix abstraction with practical algorithms. This combination enriches the book and widen the range of students who could benefit from it. Although the book does not include a chapter on writing and verifying algorithms, it lays down the mathematical foundation that fuels these algorithms. We explore, among others, Warshall algorithm to compute the transitive closure of a binary relation, the Euclidean algorithm to compute the GCD of two integers and express it as a linear combination, Havel?Hakimi algorithm to test graphical sequences, Ford?Fulkerson algorithm to find the maximum flow in a network

A delicate balance between the theory and the applications. The textbook strikes a delicate balance between pure mathematical concepts and practical applications. This combination is what students should get from a Discrete Math course. This makes the textbook suitable for math majors, as well computer science and engineering students. Materials in the book can be used to design a one semester or a two-semester course on the subject

Flexibility. Flexibility is desirable in any textbook, but difficult to achieve in general. This is even harder in a textbook on a cumulative subject like mathematics. This textbook exploits the diversity of topics covered to offer instructors and students a comfortable level of flexibility in choosing the order in which topics are covered. For example, one can choose to completely skip the chapter on Predicate Logic and still have good grasp on the remaining topics of the book. Another example is the chapter on Functions that can be approached from the point of view of the chapter on Relations. There are benefits from dedicating a separate chapter on functions, but the essence and main properties can be studied by treating functions as relations. Even within the same chapter, some sections can be treated independently of other sections and others can be optional and left to the discretion of the instructor

Conciseness. Each topic covered in this textbook can be explored in a full textbook on its own. Efforts are made to ensure that the treatment of each subject captures the most important features in the most direct and concise way possible

Fewer prerequisites. The only prerequisite for this course is a basic familiarity with mathematical fundamentals that can usually be acquired at the high school level. Each chapter is written in a relatively self-contained fashion

Abundance of examples. Most definitions and major results are immediately followed with examples to facilitate the understanding and to grasp the concepts. The book contains hundreds of fully worked examples, carefully written to eliminate ambiguities and to cover as many scenarios as possible

Extensive set of Exercises. Every section ends with its own set of suggested exercises designed to offer students a variety of practice problems. Some exercises have similarities to worked out examples in the section, others are designed to offer a bit more challenge to students. Exercises are also used in some occasions to explore some concepts not covered in the section in some unformal fashion

Proofs and Refutations The Logic of Mathematical Discovery【電子書籍】[ Imre Lakatos ]

Imre Lakatos's Proofs and Refutations is an enduring classic, which has never lost its relevance. Taking the form of a dialogue between a teacher and some students, the book considers various solutions to mathematical problems and, in the process, raises important questions about the nature of mathematical discovery and methodology. Lakatos shows that mathematics grows through a process of improvement by attempts at proofs and critiques of these attempts, and his work continues to inspire mathematicians and philosophers aspiring to develop a philosophy of mathematics that accounts for both the static and the dynamic complexity of mathematical practice. With a specially commissioned Preface written by Paolo Mancosu, this book has been revived for a new generation of readers.

|

In "A System of Logic, Ratiocinative and Inductive," John Stuart Mill systematically explores the principles of logic and scientific reasoning, offering a foundational text that intertwines empirical inquiry with philosophical inquiry. Mill employs a clear and rigorous style, advocating for inductive reasoning as a crucial method for deriving general laws from particular observations. The book not only critiques prevailing logical doctrines of his time but also contextualizes logic within the broader tapestry of human knowledge, illustrating the interplay between logic and scientific methodologies that would influence future thinkers and the scientific revolution. John Stuart Mill, a profound philosopher and one of the foremost proponents of utilitarianism, was profoundly influenced by the intellectual milieu of the 19th century. Mill's early exposure to classical philosophy and his role in the British empiricist tradition shaped his inquiry into the nature of logic and reasoning. Given his commitment to social progress and the betterment of humanity, Mill's work emerges as a critical examination of human thought, aiming to establish sound principles for scientific and logical discourse. This seminal text is highly recommended for scholars, students, and anyone interested in the fundamental underpinnings of logic and scientific reasoning. Mill'??s insights remain pertinent today, making this work essential for understanding the development of critical thinking and its application in various fields, from philosophy to science.

New Studies in Deontic Logic Norms, Actions, and the Foundations of Ethics【
|

The present volume is a sequel to Deontic Logic: Introductory and Systematic Readings (D. Reidel Publishing Company, Dordrecht 1971): its purpose is to offer a view of some of the main directions of research in contemporary deontic logic. Most of the articles included in Introductory and Systematic Readings represent what may be called the standard modal approach to deontic logic, in which de on tic logic is treated as a branch of modal logic, and the normative concepts of obligation, permission and prohibition are regarded as analogous to the "alethic" modalities necessity, possibility and impossibility. As Simo Knuuttila shows in his contribution to the present volume, this approach goes back to late medieval philosophy. Several 14th century philosophers observed the analogies between deontic and alethic modalities and discussed the deontic interpretations of various laws of modal logic. In contemporary deontic logic the modal approach was revived by G. H. von Wright's classic paper 'Deontic Logic' (1951). Certain analogies between deontic and alethic modalities are obvious and uncontroversial, but the standard approach has often been criticized on the ground that it exaggerates the analogies and tends to ignore those features of normative concepts which distinguish them from other modalities.

An Empire of Indifference American War and the Financial Logic of Risk Management【電子書籍】[ Randy Martin ]
|

In this significant Marxist critique of contemporary American imperialism, the cultural theorist Randy Martin argues that a finance-based logic of risk control has come to dominate Americans’ everyday lives as well as U.S. foreign and domestic policy. Risk managementーthe ability to adjust for risk and to leverage it for financial gainーis the key to personal finance as well as the defining element of the massive global market in financial derivatives. The United States wages its amorphous war on terror by leveraging particular interventions (such as Iraq) to much larger ends (winning the war on terror) and by deploying small numbers of troops and targeted weaponry to achieve broad effects. Both in global financial markets and on far-flung battlegrounds, the multiplier effects are difficult to foresee or control.

Drawing on theorists including Michel Foucault, Giorgio Agamben, Michael Hardt, Antonio Negri, and Achille Mbembe, Martin illuminates a frightening financial logic that must be understood in order to be countered. Martin maintains that finance divides the world between those able to avail themselves of wealth opportunities through risk taking (investors) and those who cannot do so, who are considered “at risk.” He contends that modern-day American imperialism differs from previous models of imperialism, in which the occupiers engaged with the occupied to “civilize” them, siphon off wealth, or both. American imperialism, by contrast, is an empire of indifference: a massive flight from engagement. The United States urges an embrace of risk and self-management on the occupied and then ignores or dispossesses those who cannot make the grade.

In "Posterior Analytics," Aristotle intricately explores the nature of scientific knowledge and the principles of demonstrative reasoning. The work is a cornerstone of his epistemological inquiries, illustrating his belief in empirical observation as the foundation of knowledge acquisition. Written in a dialectical style characteristic of Aristotelian logic, the text examines the relationship between thought and reality, presenting a rigorous framework through which one can attain certain knowledge. Aristotle distinguishes between different types of knowledge, emphasizing the importance of definitions and syllogistic reasoning as means to uncover universal truths amidst the particulars of sensory experience. Aristotle, one of history's most influential philosophers, made significant contributions across multiple domains, including ethics, politics, metaphysics, and natural sciences. His empirical approach and systematic methodology in the study of the world were revolutionary in the 4th century BCE and profoundly shaped subsequent intellectual thought. "Posterior Analytics" reflects his commitment to understanding the principles underlying knowledge itself, likely influenced by his desire to bridge the gap between perception and intellect while and responding to the challenges posed by his predecessors. This text is essential reading for anyone interested in the foundations of scientific inquiry and the philosophy of knowledge. Aristotle'??s clear articulation of the processes of understanding will not only benefit students of philosophy but also enrich the grasp of scholars and practitioners seeking to ground their disciplines in sound reasoning and evidence. Lettres Provinciales Defending Faith with Satire and Logic: A 17th-Century French Classic【電子書籍】[ Blaise Pascal ]
|

Blaise Pascal's "Lettres Provinciales" is a series of eighteen letters that critiques French Jesuit theology and practices during the 17th century. Written in an epistolary style, Pascal employs a blend of wit, irony, and philosophical depth, illustrating the tension between reason and faith. This work not only stands as a significant contribution to the literature of religious debate but also serves as a poignant reflection of the intellectual currents of the time, particularly the burgeoning emphasis on individual thought and the skepticism towards established orthodoxies. Pascal, a notable mathematician, physicist, and religious thinker, found himself increasingly disillusioned with the prevailing rationalist tendencies of the intellectual elite. His own spiritual journey, marked by profound religious experiences, informed his writing in "Lettres Provinciales," as he sought to defend the Christian faith against what he perceived as the overly sophisticated arguments of the Jesuits. Pascal'??s unique position at the intersection of science and faith enriches his letters, offering a multi-faceted critique that is both personal and deeply analytical. Highly recommended for readers interested in the complex interplay of faith, reason, and literature, "Lettres Provinciales" invites reflection on moral and theological questions that remain relevant. Pascal'??s eloquent prose and incisive arguments make this work not only a historical critique but also a timeless exploration of the human condition.
