Evidence and Evolution The Logic Behind the Science【電子書籍】[ Elliott Sober ]
|

How should the concept of evidence be understood? And how does the concept of evidence apply to the controversy about creationism as well as to work in evolutionary biology about natural selection and common ancestry? In this rich and wide-ranging book, Elliott Sober investigates general questions about probability and evidence and shows how the answers he develops to those questions apply to the specifics of evolutionary biology. Drawing on a set of fascinating examples, he analyzes whether claims about intelligent design are untestable; whether they are discredited by the fact that many adaptations are imperfect; how evidence bears on whether present species trace back to common ancestors; how hypotheses about natural selection can be tested, and many other issues. His book will interest all readers who want to understand philosophical questions about evidence and evolution, as they arise both in Darwin's work and in contemporary biological research.

In "Analysis of Mr. Mill's System of Logic," W. Stebbing meticulously critiques and expands upon the foundational principles established by John Stuart Mill regarding deductive and inductive reasoning. Employing a rigorous analytical lens, Stebbing dissects Mill's methodology, exploring the nuances of logical inference and empirical validation within the broader context of 19th-century philosophical discourse. The text is characterized by its clarity and precision, reflecting the burgeoning intellectual climate of the time, influenced by the intersections of empiricism and rationalism, and responds to ongoing debates about the nature of knowledge and scientific inquiry. W. Stebbing, an eminent philosopher and logician, was heavily influenced by the prominence of logical positivism and the evolving ideas surrounding scientific method during his era. His academic pursuits, particularly at Cambridge, were marked by an engagement with the works of Mill, leading him to undertake this comprehensive analysis. Stebbing sought to bridge the gap between Mill's theories and contemporary philosophical challenges, demonstrating a commitment to advancing logical theory through critical engagement. Law in the Time of Oxymora A Synaesthesia of Language, Logic and Law【電子書籍】[ Rostam J. Neuwirth ]

|

What do different concepts like true lie, bad luck, honest thief, old news, spacetime, glocalization, symplexity, sustainable development, constant change, soft law, substantive due process, pure law, bureaucratic efficiency and global justice have in common? What connections do they share with innumerable paradoxes, like the ones of happiness, time, globalization, sex, and of free will and fate?

Law in the Time of Oxymora provides answers to these conundrums by critically comparing the apparent rise in recent years of the use of rhetorical figures called "essentially oxymoronic concepts" (i.e. oxymoron, enantiosis and paradoxes) in the areas of art, science and law. Albeit to varying degrees, these concepts share the quality of giving expression to apparent contradictions. Through this quality, they also challenge the scientific paradigm rooted in the dualistic thinking and binary logic that is traditionally used in the West, as opposed to the East, where a paradoxical mode of thinking and fuzzy logic is said to have been cultivated.

Following a review of oxymora and paradoxes in art and various scientific writings, hundreds of "hard cases" featuring oxymora and a comprehensive review of the legal literature are discussed, revealing evidence suggesting that the present scientific paradigm of dualism alone will no longer be able to tackle the challenges arising from increasing diversity and complexity coupled with an apparent acceleration of change. Law in the Time of Oxymora reaches the surprising conclusion that essentially oxymoronic concepts may inaugurate a new era of cognition, involving the ways the senses interact and how we reason, think and make decisions in law and in life.

An Empire of Indifference American War and the Financial Logic of Risk Management【電子書籍】[ Randy Martin ]
|

In this significant Marxist critique of contemporary American imperialism, the cultural theorist Randy Martin argues that a finance-based logic of risk control has come to dominate Americans’ everyday lives as well as U.S. foreign and domestic policy. Risk managementーthe ability to adjust for risk and to leverage it for financial gainーis the key to personal finance as well as the defining element of the massive global market in financial derivatives. The United States wages its amorphous war on terror by leveraging particular interventions (such as Iraq) to much larger ends (winning the war on terror) and by deploying small numbers of troops and targeted weaponry to achieve broad effects. Both in global financial markets and on far-flung battlegrounds, the multiplier effects are difficult to foresee or control.

Drawing on theorists including Michel Foucault, Giorgio Agamben, Michael Hardt, Antonio Negri, and Achille Mbembe, Martin illuminates a frightening financial logic that must be understood in order to be countered. Martin maintains that finance divides the world between those able to avail themselves of wealth opportunities through risk taking (investors) and those who cannot do so, who are considered “at risk.” He contends that modern-day American imperialism differs from previous models of imperialism, in which the occupiers engaged with the occupied to “civilize” them, siphon off wealth, or both. American imperialism, by contrast, is an empire of indifference: a massive flight from engagement. The United States urges an embrace of risk and self-management on the occupied and then ignores or dispossesses those who cannot make the grade.

Posterior Analytics Exploring Knowledge and Logic in Ancient Greek Philosophy【電子書籍】[ Aristotle ]
|

In "Posterior Analytics," Aristotle intricately explores the nature of scientific knowledge and the principles of demonstrative reasoning. The work is a cornerstone of his epistemological inquiries, illustrating his belief in empirical observation as the foundation of knowledge acquisition. Written in a dialectical style characteristic of Aristotelian logic, the text examines the relationship between thought and reality, presenting a rigorous framework through which one can attain certain knowledge. Aristotle distinguishes between different types of knowledge, emphasizing the importance of definitions and syllogistic reasoning as means to uncover universal truths amidst the particulars of sensory experience. Aristotle, one of history's most influential philosophers, made significant contributions across multiple domains, including ethics, politics, metaphysics, and natural sciences. His empirical approach and systematic methodology in the study of the world were revolutionary in the 4th century BCE and profoundly shaped subsequent intellectual thought. "Posterior Analytics" reflects his commitment to understanding the principles underlying knowledge itself, likely influenced by his desire to bridge the gap between perception and intellect while and responding to the challenges posed by his predecessors. This text is essential reading for anyone interested in the foundations of scientific inquiry and the philosophy of knowledge. Aristotle'??s clear articulation of the processes of understanding will not only benefit students of philosophy but also enrich the grasp of scholars and practitioners seeking to ground their disciplines in sound reasoning and evidence. "Posterior Analytics" remains a vital resource for comprehending the evolution of scientific method and philosophical thought.

The late Mario Mignucci was one of the most authoritative, original, and influential scholars in the area of ancient philosophy, especially ancient logic. Collected here for the first time are sixteen of his most important essays on Ancient Logic, Language, and Metaphysics.

These essays show a perceptive historian and a skillful logician philosophically engaged with issues that are still at the very heart of history and philosophy of logic, such as the nature of predication, identity, and modality. As well as essays found in disparate publications, often not easily available online, the volume includes an article on Plato and the relatives translated into English for the first time and an unpublished paper on De interpretatione 7.

Mignucci thinks rigorously and writes clearly. He brings the deep knowledge of a scholar and the precision of a logician to bear on some of the trickiest topics in ancient philosophy. This collection deserves the close attention of anyone concerned with logic, language, and metaphysics, whether in ancient or contemporary philosophy.

Votes, Drugs, and Violence The Political Logic of Criminal Wars in Mexico【電子書籍】[ Guillermo Trejo ]

One of the most surprising developments in Mexico's transition to democracy is the outbreak of criminal wars and large-scale criminal violence. Why did Mexican drug cartels go to war as the country transitioned away from one-party rule? And why have criminal wars proliferated as democracy has consolidated and elections have become more competitive subnationally? In Votes, Drugs, and Violence, Guillermo Trejo and Sandra Ley develop a political theory of criminal violence in weak democracies that elucidates how democratic politics and the fragmentation of power fundamentally shape cartels' incentives for war and peace. Drawing on in-depth case studies and statistical analysis spanning more than two decades and multiple levels of government, Trejo and Ley show that electoral competition and partisan conflict were key drivers of the outbreak of Mexico's crime wars, the intensification of violence, and the expansion of war and violence to the spheres of local politics and civil society.

Communication and Meaning An Essay in Applied Modal Logic【電子書籍】[ A.J Jones ]
|

This essay contains material which will hopefully be of interest not only to philosophers, but also to those social scientists whose research concerns the analysis of communication, verbal or non-verbal. Although most of the topics taken up here are central to issues in the philosophy of language, they are, in my opinion, indistinguishable from topics in descriptive social psychology. The essay aims to provide a conceptual framework within which various key aspects of communication can be described, and it presents a formal language, using techniques from modern modal logic, in which such descriptions can themselves be formulated. It is my hope that this framework, or parts of it, might also turn out to be of value in future empirical work. There are, therefore, essentially two sides to this essay: the development of a framework of concepts, and the construction of a formal language rich enough to express the elements of which that framework is composed. The first of these two takes its point of departure in the statement quoted from Lewis (1972) on the page preceding this introduction. The distinction drawn there by Lewis is accepted as a working hypothesis, and in one sense this essay may be seen as an attempt to explore some of the consequences of that hypothesis.

Carnap, Tarski, and Quine at Harvard Conversations on Logic, Mathematics, and Science【電子書籍】[ Greg Frost-Arnold ]
|

During the academic year 1940-1941, several giants of analytic philosophy congregated at Harvard: Bertrand Russell, Alfred Tarski, Rudlof Carnap, W. V. Quine, Carl Hempel, and Nelson Goodman were all in residence. This group held regular private meetings, with Carnap, Tarski, and Quine being the most frequent attendees. Carnap, Tarski, and Quine at Harvard allows the reader to act as a fly on the wall for their conversations. Carnap took detailed notes during his year at Harvard. This book includes both a German transcription of these shorthand notes and an English translation in the appendix section. Carnap’s notes cover a wide range of topics, but surprisingly, the most prominent question is: if the number of physical items in the universe is finite (or possibly finite), what form should scientific discourse, and logic and mathematics in particular, take? This question is closely connected to an abiding philosophical problem, one that is of central philosophical importance to the logical empiricists: what is the relationship between the logico-mathematical realm and the material realm studied by natural science? Carnap, Tarski, and Quine’s attempts to answer this question involve a number of issues that remain central to philosophy of logic, mathematics, and science today. This book focuses on three such issues: nominalism, the unity of science, and analyticity. In short, the book reconstructs the lines of argument represented in these Harvard discussions, discusses their historical significance (especially Quine’s break from Carnap), and relates them when possible to contemporary treatments of these issues.

Nominalism. The founding document of twentieth-century Anglophone nominalism is Goodman and Quine’s 1947 Steps Toward a Constructive Nominalism.” In it, the authors acknowledge that their project’s initial impetus was the conversations of 1940-1941 with Carnap and Tarski. Frost-Arnold's exposition focuses upon the rationales given for and against the nominalist program at its inception. Tarski and Quine’s primary motivation for nominalism is that mathematical sentences will be unintelligible’ or meaningless, and thus perniciously metaphysical, if (contra nominalism) their component terms are taken to refer to abstract objects. Their solution is to re-interpret mathematical language so that its terms only refer to concrete entities-and if the number of concreta is finite, then portions of classical mathematics will be considered meaningless. Frost-Arnold then identifies and reconstructs Carnap’s two most forceful responses to Tarski and Quine’s view: (1) all of classical mathematics is meaningful, even if the number of concreta is finite, and (2) nominalist strictures lead to absurd consequences in mathematics and logic. The second is familiar from modern debates over nominalism, and its force is proportional to the strength of one’s commitment to preserving all of classical mathematics. The first, however, has no direct correlate in the modern debate, and turns upon the question of whether Carnap’s technique for partially interpreting a language can confer meaningfulness on the whole language. Finally, the author compares the arguments for and against nominalism found in the discussion notes to the leading arguments in the current nominalist debate: the indispensability argument and the argument from causal theories of reference and knowledge.

Analyticity. Carnap, Tarski, and Quine’s conversations on finitism have a direct connection to the tenability of the analytic-synthetic distinction: under a finitist-nominalist regime, portions of arithmetic-a supposedly analytic enterprise-become empirical. Other portions of the 1940-41 notes address analyticity directly. Interestingly, Tarski’s criticisms are more sustained and pointed than Quine’s. For example, Tarski suggests that G?del’s first incompleteness theorem furnishes evidence against Carnap’s conception of analyticity. After reconstructing this argument, Frost-Arnold concludes that it does not tell decisively against Carnap-provided that language is not treated fundamentally proof-theoretically. Quine’s points of disagreement with Carnap in the discussion notes are primarily denials of Carnap’s premises without argument. They do, however, allow us new and more precise characterizations of Carnap and Quine’s differences. Finally, the author forwards two historical conjectures concerning the radicalization of Quine’s critique of analyticity in the period between Truth by Convention” and Two Dogmas.” First, the finitist conversations could have shown Quine how the apparently analytic sentences of arithmetic could be plausibly construed as synthetic. Second, Carnap’s shift during his semantic period toward intensional analyses of linguistic concepts, including synonymy, perhaps made Quine, an avowed extensionalist, more skeptical of meaning and analyticity.

Unity of Science. The unity of science movement originated in Vienna in the 1920s, and figured prominently in the transplantation of logical empiricism into North America in the 1940s. Carnap, Tarski, and Quine’s search for a total language of science that incorporates mathematical language into that of the natural and social sciences is a clear attempt to unify the language of science. But what motivates the drive for such a unified science? Frost-Arnold locates the answer in the logical empiricists’ antipathy towards speculative metaphysics, in contrast with meaningful scientific claims. I present evidence that, for logical empiricists over several decades, an apparently meaningful assertion or term is metaphysical if and only if that assertion or term cannot be incorporated into a language of unified science. Thus, constructing a single language of science that encompasses the mathematical and natural domains would ensure that mathematical entities are not on par with entelechies and Platonic Forms. The author explores various versions of this criterion for overcoming metaphysics, focusing on Carnap and Neurath. Finally, I consider an obstacle facing their strategy for overcoming metaphysics: there is no effective procedure to show that a given claim or term cannot be incorporated within a language.

Governing and Ruling The Political Logic of Taxation in China【電子書籍】[ Changdong Zhang ]

Rapid social economic changes, the transition from a planned economy to a market economy, or even economic liberalization can lead to political instability and the collapse of authoritarian regimes. Despite experiencing all of these unprecedented changes in the past forty years, China under the Chinese Communist Party’s leadership has so far successfully transformed and improved both its governance capacity and its ruling capacity. Governing and Ruling: The Political Logic of Taxation in China addresses this regime resilience puzzle by examining the political logic of its taxation system, especially the ways in which taxation helps China handle three governance problems: maneuvering social control, improving agent discipline, and eliciting cooperation. Changdong Zhang argues that a taxation system plays an important role in sustaining authoritarian rule, in China and elsewhere, by combining co-optation and repression functions. The book collects valuable firsthand and secondhand data; studies China’s taxation system, intergovernmental fiscal relationships, composition of fiscal revenue sources, and tax administration; and discusses how each dimension influences the three governance problems.

Quantum, Probability, Logic The Work and Influence of Itamar Pitowsky【

|

This volume provides a broad perspective on the state of the art in the philosophy and conceptual foundations of quantum mechanics. Its essays take their starting point in the work and influence of Itamar Pitowsky, who has greatly influenced our understanding of what is characteristically non-classical about quantum probabilities and quantum logic, and this serves as a vantage point from which they reflect on key ongoing debates in the field. Readers will find a definitive and multi-faceted description of the major open questions in the foundations of quantum mechanics today, including: Is quantum mechanics a new theory of (contextual) probability? Should the quantum state be interpreted objectively or subjectively? How should probability be understood in the Everett interpretation of quantum mechanics? What are the limits of the physical implementation of computation? The impact of this volume goes beyond the exposition of Pitowsky’s influence: it provides a unique collection of essays by leading thinkers containing profound reflections on the field.

Chapter 1. How to Win Every Argument The Use and Abuse of Logic【電子書籍】[ Dr Madsen Pirie ]
|

In the second edition of this witty and infectious book, Madsen Pirie builds upon his guide to using - and indeed abusing - logic in order to win arguments. By including new chapters on how to win arguments in writing, in the pub, with a friend, on Facebook and in 140 characters (on Twitter), Pirie provides the complete guide to triumphing in altercations ranging from the everyday to the downright serious.

He identifies with devastating examples all the most common fallacies popularly used in argument. We all like to think of ourselves as clear-headed and logical - but all readers will find in this book fallacies of which they themselves are guilty. The author shows you how to simultaneously strengthen your own thinking and identify the weaknesses in other people arguments. And, more mischievously, Pirie also shows how to be deliberately illogical - and get away with it. This book will make you maddeningly smart: your family, friends and opponents will all wish that you had never read it.

Publisher's warning: In the wrong hands this book is dangerous. We recommend that you arm yourself with it whilst keeping out of the hands of others. Only buy this book as a gift if you are sure that you can trust the recipient.

In "Children's Rights: A Book of Nursery Logic," Kate Douglas Smith Wiggin weaves together a rich tapestry of whimsical narratives and poignant reflections, advocating for the rights and dignity of children through accessible yet profound logic. Embracing the literary style of her time, Wiggin employs playful language and charming illustrations to engage young readers while simultaneously appealing to the sensibilities of adult caretakers. The book serves as a subtle commentary on the societal norms surrounding childhood in the late 19th century, challenging prevailing notions by positing children as active participants deserving of respect and agency. Kate Douglas Smith Wiggin, a prominent figure in early childhood education and reform, was deeply inspired by her own experiences as an educator and her commitment to child welfare. Her background in the progressive movement of the time, coupled with her exposure to the alarming conditions faced by many children, informed her advocacy and literary endeavors. Wiggin's ability to blend storytelling with social commentary stems from her belief that literature could serve as a powerful tool for education and reform in society. This book is highly recommended for educators, parents, and anyone interested in the evolution of children's rights as well as the impact of literature on social change. Wiggin's insightful narratives illuminate the importance of nurturing children's voices and fostering their independence, making this work an invaluable resource in understanding both literary and educational histories.

Logic Load System Methods of Load Progression in Strength and Conditioning【電子書籍】[ Alex Brebeanu ]
|

Revolution in Weight training this should really be the title of this book. Because the system promoted in this book, simply called Logic Load System, is the future of training and every single person that goes into a gym, from a beginner level up to a high performance athlete, will use it as an ultimate system of training, a complex tool to enhance their performances with a mathematical precision. Logic Load System presents the latest research in Weight training. Whether you are designing a Strength & Conditioning routine for a certain sport or a Bodybuilding session, Logic Load System will provide you with over 30 methods of manipulating the weight and the repetitions, with a mathematical precision, in order to give you the best results and also to build up and plan your sessions over a training cycle. If so far, athletes were just randomly added plates on the bar, usually when increasing from one set to another, with the same ratio, regardless the level of preparation, Logic Load System will teach you how to customize the weight and the repetitions according to your level (beginner or advanced athlete) and stage of preparation ( preparatory, precompetitional, competitional or transition). At the moment, most athletes are using mainly 2-3 methods of increasing and/or decreasing the weight from set to set : - increasing the weight every set - increasing the weight every second step - increasing and then decreasing the weight Moreover, the weight is increased with 5kg, 10kg, 15 or 20kg, as this is pretty much the weight of the plates in most gyms. Consequently, the athletes are expecting to gradually increase their overall effort which is often a false affirmation. If nobody asked themselves why increasing it with 5, 10, 15 or 20 kg, now is the time to do so, because there is nothing wrong with 4, 12, 16 or 18 kg (for example) Logic Load System will clearly explain you with practical examples and graphs why and how much to increase the weight and gradually increase the overall effort from set to set, instead of just randomly throw plates on the bar with no logic in it whatsoever and yet expecting the best results. There are no two athletes with perfectly the same level of fitness and therefore the training should be different from athlete to athlete. Increasing the weight with 30 kg has a different effect on a beginner athlete as opposed to an advanced athlete. Logic Load System will teach you how to customize the weight and the reps to fit your current level of preparation and to prepare you for further improvement. Now is the time to stop being a follower. It is the time to make it work for you and be in charge of your own progress. On the same note, most of the athletes are using the same patterns of repetitions when increasing the weight from set to set. A common pattern is 12 reps -10 reps 8 reps 6 reps. Whether you are aiming for strength, power or hypertrophy, this is regarded as being the universal answer to achieve the best results one pattern fits all purposes. To claim that 4 or 5 sets at a pattern of 12 reps 10 reps 8 reps 6 reps is the best pattern for EVERY athlete is totally illogic. To claim that there is only one way to achieve your goal, is more than irrational. To claim that increasing the weight from set to set with the same ratio, regardless the stage and the level of athletes preparation is totally ignorant. This approach has to change and Logic Load System is the only system in the world that will show you why and how to do it. Again, it is more than sure that is nothing wrong with a pattern of 11-9-7-5 reps, for example, but I very rarely saw athletes performing this pattern as we tend to perform a pattern of even number of repetitions, avoiding the odd numbers repetitions as being to odd As is not only how hard an athlete could train, but also how smart, Logic Load System will demonstrate you how many reps should be performed and, m

Kant and Aristotle Epistemology, Logic, and Method【電子書籍】[ Marco Sgarbi ]

A historical and philosophical reassessment of the impact of Aristotle and early-modern Aristotelianism on the development of Kant's transcendental philosophy.

Kant and Aristotle reassesses the prevailing understanding of Kant as an anti-Aristotelian philosopher. Taking epistemology, logic, and methodology to be the key disciplines through which Kant's transcendental philosophy stood as an independent form of philosophy, Marco Sgarbi shows that Kant drew important elements of his logic and metaphysical doctrines from Aristotelian ideas that were absent in other philosophical traditions, such as the distinction of matter and form of knowledge, the division of transcendental logic into analytic and dialectic, the theory of categories and schema, and the methodological issues of the architectonic. Drawing from unpublished documents including lectures, catalogues, academic programs, and the Aristotelian-Scholastic handbooks that were officially adopted at K?nigsberg University where Kant taught, Sgarbi further demonstrates the historical and philosophical importance of Aristotle and Aristotelianism to these disciplines from the late sixteenth century to the first half of the eighteenth century.

Meaning and Necessity - A Study in Semantics and Modal Logic【電子書籍】[ Rudolf Carnap ]
|

The main purpose of this book is the development of a new method for the semantical analysis of meaning, that is, a new method for analyzing and describing the meanings of linguistic expressions. This method, called the method of extension and intension, is developed by modifying and extending certain customary concepts, especially those of class and property. The method will be contrasted with various other semantical methods used in traditional philosophy or by contemporary authors. These other methods have one characteristic in common. They all regard an expression in a language as a name of a concrete or abstract entity. In contradistinction, the method here proposed takes an expression, not as naming anything, but as possessing an intension and an extension. Many of the earliest books, particularly those dating back to the 1900s and before, are now extremely scarce and increasingly expensive. We are republishing these classic works in affordable, high quality, modern editions, using the original text and artwork.

Law, Resources and Time-Space Constructing Internal Evolutionary Logic for Chinese Judiciary During the 19th Century【電子書籍】[ Zhang Shiming ]
|

This book studies the judicial evolution of the Qing Dynasty. It sums up the changes from six major aspects:

Banfang(班房)emerged in the late Qianlong period; 2. The opening of capital appeals(京控)early in Jiaqing’s reign; 3. The consular jurisdiction was established during Daoguang’s reign; 4. The execution on the spot (就地正法)was started in Daoguang and Xianfeng periods; 5. The introduction of fashenju (??局,a interrogatory court) happened during Tongzhi’s reign; 6. Late in Guangxu’s reign, banishment was abolished, and reforms were made for prisons.

In the past, people did not have a comprehensive understanding of these big changes. From the perspective of legal culture, scholars often criticize traditional Chinese law focuses on criminal law while ignores civil law in terms of legal culture, but this situation can be explained in part by the inadequate allocation of resources and authoritarian resources in traditional societies. Using a large number of archives and precious materials such as private notes that were not noticed by academics in the past, this book adopts the research path of new historical jurisprudence to explore the inner logic of judicial evolution in the Qing Dynasty, focusing on the triangular connection between legal rules, resources, and temporal and spatial constructions, which is an important contribution to the study of traditional Chinese law.
