|

In "The Cthulhu Mythos," Robert E. Howard brilliantly weaves a rich tapestry of cosmic horror, presenting an intricate world where ancient gods and forgotten civilizations collide with the fragile human psyche. Employing a vivid and evocative literary style, Howard's prose pulsates with a palpable sense of dread, immersing readers in an atmosphere steeped in mystery and foreboding. The narrative seamlessly draws on elements of Lovecraftian horror while establishing Howard's unique voice, offering both thrilling adventure and a profound exploration of humanity's insignificance in the cosmos. This collection illustrates the fragile boundary between reality and the unknown, inviting readers to confront their deepest fears within a mythos that defies human comprehension. Robert E. Howard, a pioneer of pulp fiction and an influential figure in the realm of fantasy and horror, drew inspiration from his Texas upbringing and a lifelong fascination with mythology and folklore. His comprehensive understanding of the human condition, coupled with personal struggles, fueled his creation of compelling, often tragic characters who grapple with existential themes. Howard's engagement with the burgeoning Cthulhu Mythos reflects his inventive spirit and desire to push the boundaries of the genre. I highly recommend "The Cthulhu Mythos" to both fans of horror literature and those seeking a deeper understanding of the connections between myth and human experience. It stands as a seminal work that not only illuminates Howard's brilliance as a storyteller but also enriches the Cthulhu universe, inviting readers to lose themselves in its unsettling depths.

On October 2. 1936. the SS Orient Princess, a vessel of some 8,000 tons, put into Valparaiso carrying a cargo of timber and crude rubber from the Dutch East Indies. Immediately upon arrival, her captain, one Willem van Groot, was met by two members of the local police and Professor Thomas Wilmerson of Miskatonic University, the latter having flown to Chile in response to an urgent radio message sent by van Groot four days before the Orient Princess reached port.

Captain van Groot took with him from the ship, the log and a large notebook carefully wrapped in waterproof oilskin which he kept in his possession until the four men were seated around the table in Wilmerson’s hotel room and the door was securely locked. Only then did the captain place the two items on the table. Before speaking, he opened the ship’s log and riffled through the pages until he found the one he wanted.

Glancing up, he looked at each man in turn, then said quietly, “Gentlemen, I can understand your curiosity concerning the radio message I dispatched but I can assure you that this matter is of the utmost importance and secrecy. I asked that you, Professor Wilmerson, should be here when we docked since this package”ー he indicated the oilskin-wrapped book with his right handー“is addressed to you personally and although I’ve only glanced through the contents, I shudder to think of what may have happened to the writer.”

So begins this Cthulhu Mythos novella, a brand new tale from a British master of dark fantasy!

THE CTHULHU MYTHOS ? Complete Collection Lovecraftian dread, ancient deities, and unspeakable cults in a pulp-born horror anthology【電子書籍】[ Robert E. Howard ]

This carefully crafted ebook: "THE CTHULHU MYTHOS ? Complete Collection: The Children of the Night, The Black Stone, The Thing on the Roof, The Challenge From Beyond & The Fire of Asshurbanipal" is formatted for your eReader with a functional and detailed table of contents. The Cthulhu Mythos is a shared fictional universe, based on the work of American horror writer H. P. Lovecraft, which represent a gateway between the known universe and an ancient dimension of terror inhabited with unspeakable creatures, a pantheon of alien extra-dimensional deities and horrors which predate humanity, and which are hinted at in eons-old myths and legends. The Children of the night is a story which starts with six people sitting in John Conrad's study: Conrad himself, Clemants, Professor Kirowan, Taverel, Ketrick and the narrator John O'Donnel. O'Donnel describes them all as Anglo-Saxon with the exception of Ketrick. Ketrick, although he possesses a documented pure Anglo-Saxon lineage, appears to have slightly Mongolian-looking eyes and an odd lisp that O'Donnel finds distasteful. The Black Stone is a classic story which introduces the mad poet Justin Geoffrey and the fictitious Unaussprechlichen Kulten by Friedrich von Junzt. Among Howard's stories that can be considered part of the Cthulhu Mythos ー this one is no exception ー it is written as a mythos story rather than as simply a tale compatible with the Lovecraftian universe. It follows the same pattern and has the same features as H. P. Lovecraft's classic work, and it is an obvious wink to Howard's friend and mentor, Lovecraft himself. Robert Ervin Howard (1906-1936) was an American author who wrote pulp fiction in a diverse range of genres. He is well known for his character Conan the Barbarian and is regarded as the father of the sword and sorcery subgenre. The Works of H.P. Lovecraft Vol. I - The Cthulhu Mythos【電子書籍】[ H. P. Lovecraft ]

|

Howard Phillips "H. P." Lovecraft (1890-1937) was an American author who achieved posthumous fame through his influential works of horror fiction. Virtually unknown and only published in pulp magazines before he died in poverty, he is now regarded as one of the most significant 20th-century authors in his genre.

Horror, fantasy, and science fiction author Stephen King called Lovecraft "the twentieth century's greatest practitioner of the classic horror tale." King has made it clear in his semi-autobiographical non-fiction book Danse Macabre that Lovecraft was responsible for King's own fascination with horror and the macabre, and was the single largest figure to influence his fiction writing.

Lovecraft's fiction has been grouped into three categories by some critics.
Macabre stories (c. 1905-1920)
Dream Cycle stories (c. 1920-1927)
Cthulhu / Lovecraft Mythos stories (c. 1925-1935)

We have divided the H. P. Lovecraft large canon of novels and stories in three volumes;
Volume 1 - The Cthulhu Mythos
Volume 2 - The Dream Cycle
Volume 3 - Horror and Other Stories.
Ten of the 24 stories in Volume 1 and 2 are identical as we prefer to keep the categories intact.

The Cthulhu Mythos is a shared fictional universe, based on the works of Lovecraft.

Robert M. Price described, in his essay "H. P. Lovecraft and the Cthulhu Mythos," two stages in the development of the Cthulhu Mythos. The first stage, termed the "Cthulhu Mythos proper" by Price, was formulated during Lovecraft's lifetime and was subject to his guidance. The second stage was guided by August Derleth who, in addition to publishing Lovecraft's stories after his death, attempted to categorize and expand the Mythos.

In this first collection of H. P. Lovecrafts works; Volume 1 - The Cthulhu Mythos, you will find the following stories connected to The Cthulhu Mythos, in chronological order by year written:

Dagon, 1917

The White Ship, 1919

The Statement of Randolph Carter, 1919

Nyarlathotep, 1920 (introduces Nyarlathotep)

The Picture in the House, 1920

From Beyond, 1920

The Nameless City, 1921

Herbert West: Reanimator, 1922

The Hound, 1922 (introduces the Necronomicon)

Azathoth, 1922 (introduces Azathoth), published posthumously 1938

The Festival, 1923

The Call of Cthulhu, 1926 (introduces Cthulhu)

The Descendant, 1926, published posthumously 1938

The Colour Out of Space, 1927

The Dream-Quest of Unknown Kadath, 1926-27 (introduces the Elder Sign), published posthumously 1943

The Case of Charles Dexter Ward, 1927 (introduces Yog-Sothoth), published posthumously 1941

The Dunwich Horror, 1928

The Whisperer in Darkness, 1930 (first use of the Mi-go by name)

At the Mountains of Madness, 1931

The Shadow Over Innsmouth, 1931 (introduces Deep Ones)

The Dreams in the Witch-House, 1932 (introduces the Elder Things)

The Thing on the Doorstep, 1933

The Shadow Out of Time, 1934 (introduces the Great Race of Yith)

The Haunter of the Dark, 1935

Repetition and Mythos Ratzinger’s Bonaventure and the Meaning of History【電子書籍】[ Matthew R. Boulter ]
|

Writing his Habilitationsschrift as a young man in the late 1950s, future Pontiff Joseph Ratzinger argues that, when St. Bonaventure composed his Collationes in Hexaemeron in the spring of 1273, not since St. Augustine's De Civitate Dei contra Paganos had the world seen such a ground-breaking work on the logos of history. Indeed, for Ratzinger's Bonaventure, history is "first philosophy." The thirteenth-century Franciscan rails against the widespread assumption, rooted the newly "rediscovered" Aristotle, of history's unintelligibility. For Bonaventure, mythos mediates the difference between science and history, yielding a non-positivistic approach to the latter. Building on the dynamics of Plato's Line, Boulter show that the days of creation, narrated by Bonaventure, structure both history and thought. Because, like a story, it has beginning and end, history as a whole can be grasped. Hence, eschatological knowledge of the end of the world is possible. Yet this work also shows how the false "progress myths" of modernity are counterfeit versions of true, spiritual advancement of the kind embodied by saints such as Francis and Bonaventure himself. What is the logos of history? It turns out that it is mythos.

The Elohoic Verses Book One '' Mythos of Elohim'' Variations on a Dream【電子書籍】[ Patrick L. Lysons ]
|

What is a "mythos"?: a "story, speech, or song" that celebrates a sacred narrative. A mythos can be a play, a film, an opera, a narrative within a narrative; above all, a mythopoeic vehicle. A musical coda. A mythologem. A poem. A song that won't go away you hum on your way to somewhere else. Or simply a dream narrative where certain sacred themes repeat themselves throughout human history.

The poems in this first book of the Elohoic trilogy verses were written during a ten year period (1989-99)in rural areas throughout the American Southwest. The narrative begins with an invitation, an invocation, to step into "poetic light" and concludes with the seeming death of the poetic/philosopher persona; along the way, the persona encounters the character of Jesus and his opposite: the Maker of the World-Iaoldaboath-but the poetic character in the mythos haunts certain mystic types: the Lost Pilgrim "still stuck on Eckhart's prayer" encountering Dante in Purgatory; a lover, friend, priest, and shaman. In an enigmatic style, the brevity is as sharp as a Zen master's silence where existence is seen as a poetic experiment in negation, a mimetic deconstruction--thus,in the facing of death an acceptance of death; the stirring of another kind of experience and Being in heart and mind. The poems at times elevate a prophetic and hortatory Voice-its language firmly grounded in an ancient and sacred poetic tradition. But the poetry itself, as poetry, remains informed by an Other; inspired by Kierkegaard's essay "The God as Teacher and Savior" (from which the excerpt is quoted)the poems proceed in a loose narrative form. It tells the story of a poetic risk-taker who is near death from a mountain climbing accident. He is remembering a dream he dreamt at a point from which his life has already ended. That essential material--the emptying of the contents of the dream--becomes the "mythos" of the poetry.

Humphrey Bogart (as Sam Spade) best addresses the mysterious nature of the mythos in the last lines of the film "The Maltese Falcon". When asked "What is it?" Spade responds: "It's the stuff dreams are made of."

Note: The name "Elohim" honors the Elohoic tradition of poetry and songs found in the Bible whose Hebrew name took the form El-o-him (as one of the Names for God) in the Psalms, for example, and in Ecclesiastes, among 9 other books classified as "The Writings", including Proverbs.

For a list of literary sources alluded to in this book, please E-mail the author.

A Wraeththu Mythos Novel

Humanity's time on Earth is done and a new, androgynous species has risen to take its place. Deep in the mountains of the eastern coast of the New World lives Raven, a human boy, and the last remnants of his ancient tribe. His adopted father, Two Comet, persuades Raven that the only chance for the survival of his heritage lies in Raven joining humanity's usurpers: Wraeththu. Reluctantly, Raven agrees, but in a final act of defiance conceives a child with his close friend, Pale Fawn.

Raven is incepted into a phyle of the Wraeththu tribe of Sulh, a band of travelling scholars who welcome the ancient wisdom he brings to them. Here, there is a mystery concerning Fen's vanished sister, Serena, and other women who disappear mysteriously into strange ? and predatory - etheric rifts. Following an inner call, both Raven and Fen are driven to seek out the family members they have lost, and follow the Waterland mystery to its source across the eastern seas. What they find makes them realise their role in the new world order will be more crucial than they could have dreamed.

Song of the Sulh is a strong, character-driven story, and an innovative addition to the canon of the Wraeththu Mythos.

Critias & Timaeus : Plato on the Atlantis Mythos (Illustrated Edition)【電子書籍】[ Plato ]

In 427 B.C., the Ancient Greek city-state of Athens was flourishing. Approximately 80 years earlier, the Athenians had formed the first self-representative democracy in history, the Peloponnesian War against Sparta had only just started, and Socrates was only beginning to lay the foundation of what would become Western philosophy. That year Plato was born to a wealthy family: with an uncle who was close friends with Socrates, Plato was seemingly destined to become a philosopher. By the end of his life, Plato had indeed become the foremost philosopher of his time, and perhaps the most famous philosopher in Western history. None of Socrates works survived antiquity, so most of what is known about him came from the writings of his followers, most notably Plato. What is known about Socrates is that he seemed to make a career out of philosophy, and Plato was intent on following in his footsteps. Yet for all of the influence of Socrates life on Plato, it was Socrates death around 399 B.C. that truly shaped him. Plato was so embittered by Socrates trial in Athens that he completely soured on Athenian democracy, and he began to travel around the Mediterranean, studying topics like mathematics, honing his approach to philosophical thinking, and continuing to refine his philosophical beliefs. About a decade later, Plato returned to Athens and founded his famous Platonic Academy around 387 B.C., which he oversaw for 40 years until his death. One of Platos philosophical beliefs was that writing down teachings was less valuable than passing them down orally, and several of Platos writings are responses to previous writings of his, so Platos personally held beliefs are hard to discern. However, Plato educated several subsequent philosophers, chief among them Aristotle, and his writings eventually formed the backbone of Western philosophy. Timaeus is one of Plato's dialogues, mostly in the form of a long monologue given by the title character, written circa 360 BC. The work puts forward speculation on the nature of the physical world and human beings. It is followed by the dialogue Critias. Speakers of the dialogue are Socrates, Timaeus of Locri, Hermocrates, and Critias. Some scholars believe that it is not the Critias of the Thirty Tyrants who is appearing in this dialogue, but his grandfather, who is also named Critias. Critias is the second of a projected trilogy of dialogues, preceded by Timaeus and followed by Hermocrates, though the latter was possibly never written and Critias was left incomplete. Because of their resemblance (e.g. in terms of persons appearing), modern classicists occasionally combine both Timaeus and Critias as Timaeus-Critias. In the dialogues Timaeus and Critias, Plato discusses political philosophy and makes the first mention of the Lost City of Atlantis, which he described in Timaeus as an island which was larger than Libya and Asia together. Plato continued, Now in this island of Atlantis there existed a confederation of kings, of great and marvelous power, which held sway over all the island, and over many other islands also and parts of the continent. Plato wrote that Atlantis disappeared under the sea in a single day.

Modernity, Metatheory, and the Temporal-Spatial Divide From Mythos to Techne【電子書籍】[ Michael Kimaid ]
|

This book is about how modernity affects our perceptions of time and space. Its main argument is that geographical space is used to control temporal progress by channeling it to benefit particular political, economic and social interests, or by halting it altogether. By incorporating the ancient Greek myth of the Titanomachy as a conceptual metaphor to explore the elemental ideas of time and space, the author argues that hegemonic interests have developed spatial hierarchy into a comprehensive system of technocratic monoculture, which interrupts temporal development in order to maintain exclusive power and authority. This spatial stasis is reinforced through the control of historical narratives and geographical settings. While increasingly comprehensive, the author argues that this state of affairs can best be challenged by focusing on the development of "unmappable places" which presently exist within the socio-spatial matrix of the modern world.
