The Ramayana A Modern Retelling of the Great Indian Epic【電子書籍】[ Ramesh Menon ]
|

"One of the ancient world's great verse epics is retold in energetic English prose in this sparkling volume . . . A masterpiece made new." ー Kirkus Reviews
India's most beloved and enduring legend, the Ramayana is widely acknowledged to be one of the world's great literary masterpieces. Still an integral part of India's cultural and religious expression, the Ramayana was originally composed by the Sanskrit poet Valmiki around 300 b.c. The epic of Prince Rama's betrayal, exile, and struggle to rescue his faithful wife, Sita, from the clutches of a demon and to reclaim his throne has profoundly affected the literature, art, and culture of South and Southeast Asiaーan influence most likely unparalleled in the history of world literature, except, possibly, for the Bible. Throughout the centuries, countless versions of the epic have been produced in numerous formats and languages. But previous English versions have been either too short to capture the magnitude of the original; too secular in presenting what is, in effect, scripture; or dry, line-by-line translations. Now novelist Ramesh Menon has rendered the tale in lyrical prose that conveys all the beauty and excitement of the original, while making this spiritual and literary classic accessible to a new generation of readers.
"Reverent, lyrical, and engaging, Menon's retelling is an impressive addition to the voluminous loreーoral, written, and performedーthat collectively comprises the Rama story tradition of India and Southeast Asia . . . it brings this great story to life once more for an English-language audience." ーPhilip Lutgendorf, Associate Professor of Hindi and Modern Indian Studies, University of Iowa
"A beautiful new rendering of an inexhaustible theme." ーPeter Brook, Film and Theatre Director

Hindu Literature: Comprising The Book of Good Counsels, Nala and Damayanti, The Ramayana and Sakoontala【電子書籍】[ Kalidasa & Valmiki ]
|

A story-book from the Sanscrit at least possesses the minor merit of novelty. The "perfect language" has been hitherto regarded as the province of scholars, and few of these even have found time or taste to search its treasures. And yet among them is the key to the heart of modern Indiaーas well as the splendid record of her ancient Gods and glories. The hope of Hindostan lies in the intelligent interest of England. Whatever avails to dissipate misconceptions between them, and to enlarge their intimacy, is a gain to both peoples; and to this end the present volume aspires, in an humble degree, to contribute. The "Hitopade?a" is a work of high antiquity, and extended popularity. The prose is doubtless as old as our own era; but the intercalated verses and proverbs compose a selection from writings of an age extremely remote. The "Mahabharata" and the textual Veds are of those quoted; to the first of which Professor M. Williams (in his admirable edition of the "Nala," 1860) assigns a date of 350 B.C., while he claims for the "Rig-Veda" an antiquity as high as B.C. 1300. The "Hitopade?a" may thus be fairly styled "The Father of all Fables"; for from its numerous translations have come ?sop and Pilpay, and in later days Reineke Fuchs. Originally compiled in Sanscrit, it was rendered, by order of Nushirav?n, in the sixth century, A.D., into Persic. From the Persic it passed, A.D. 850, into the Arabic, and thence into Hebrew and Greek. In its own land it obtained as wide a circulation. The Emperor Acbar, impressed with the wisdom of its maxims and the ingenuity of its apologues, commended the work of translating it to his own Vizir, Abdul Fazel. That minister accordingly put the book into a familiar style, and published it with explanations, under the title of the "Criterion of Wisdom." The Emperor had also suggested the abridgment of the long series of shlokes which here and there interrupt the narrative, and the Vizir found this advice sound, and followed it, like the present Translator. To this day, in India, the "Hitopade?a," under other names (as the "Anv?ri Suhaili"[1]), retains the delighted attention of young and old, and has some representative in all the Indian vernaculars. A work so well esteemed in the East cannot be unwelcome to Western readers, who receive it here, a condensed but faithful transcript of sense and manner. As often as an Oriental allusion, or a name in Hindoo mythology, seemed to ask some explanation for the English reader, notes have been appended, bearing reference to the page. In their compilation, and generally, acknowledgment is due to Professor Johnson's excellent version and edition of the "Hitopade?a," and to Mr. Muir's "Sanscrit Texts." A residence in India, and close intercourse with the Hindoos, have given the author a lively desire to subserve their advancement. No one listens now to the precipitate ignorance which would set aside as "heathenish" the high civilization of this great race; but justice is not yet done to their past development and present capacities. If the wit, the morality, and the philosophy of these "beasts of India" (so faithfully rendered by Mr. Harrison Weir) surprise any vigorous mind into further exploration of her literature, and deeper sense of our responsibility in her government, the author will be repaid

Valmiki's Astropalmistry The Hidden Code of Astrology and Palmistry within the Ramayana【電子書籍】[ Sulabh Jain ]
|

The Ramayana was written by Valmiki, a famous monk, astrologer and palmist. He wrote a system of astropalmistry into his classic, and kept the details of his system hidden in plain sight using mythic symbols. This leads to many questions about the characters in the Ramayana that cannot be answered, but become obvious once the code of astrology and palmistry is uncovered. Why did Kumbhakarna sleep for six months at a time? Because this is the period of time that Jupiter stays retrograde. Why was Sugriva the son of Surya (the Sun god)? Because Sugriva’s character is a metaphor for the way in which the Sun interacts with other planets in your birth chart and on your hands. The answers to these questions, and many more, are in the pages of this book.

You will also learn how to use Valmik’s system of astropalmistry to make predictions for yourself and others. It is unique to the other systems of classical Vedic astrology and palmistry and has something new for even the experts in this field. Valmiki’s Astropalmistry is a vital book for those interested in Mythology, Astrology or Palmistry.

The Ramayana is perhaps one of the best known epics in the world which transcends all barriers of time, caste, creed and space. The reason for Ramayana's great popularity is that it is one story entwined in so many amazing stories woven so beautifully that not even for a moment you feel out of place. It takes you on a journey beyond comprehension. Ramayana is the tale of Rama, the prince of Ayodhya. It tells the story of Prince Rama's birth, childhood, exile, and struggle to rescue his faithful wife Sita from the clutches of Demon Ravan and his reclaiming of the throne of Ayodhya. Throughout the centuries, countless versions of the Ramayana have been produced in numerous formats and languages for readers of all ages. But previous English versions have been either too short to capture the magnitude of the original or too bulky to finish in one sitting. Now Seema Gupta has rendered the tale in simple and lucid language that conveys all the beauty and excitement of the original, while making this spiritual and literary classic accessible to a new generation of readers, specially the teenagers.Presented beautifully with high resolution black & white illustrations, this vivid and vibrant presentation of the epic is a perfect read for children of all ages. The epic, presented in a Graded Reader style, is divided into various sections (Kand) and chapters.

The Vedas, the Ramayana, the Gita, the Puranas and the Mahabharata are some of Hindu's ancient religious texts that have been guiding the society for ages towards the development of a better society. A God-fearing person on his own desists himself from doing wrong, as he is aware of the omnipresence of the Lord. Hindu religious texts make one aware of one’s duties and of the principles of Dharma or righteous behaviour. The term ‘God-fearing’ does not mean that one is a coward. In fact, it signifies a strong aversion to doing wrong. This is what these ancient texts try to teach everybody.

As the original texts are too voluminous, we have presented their essence in the form of unique quiz books, which not only enrich the mind with the knowledge of Hinduism but also enlighten the reader on the philosophical concepts of Hinduism.

This particular book contains the objective type questions on the life story of Lord Rama.
