**Longlisted for the Bread & Roses Award 2025**
**A Guardian book to look out for in 2024**

'An exceptional book: a meditation on family; an interrogation of movement and borders; a reflection on how someone can become separated from their own personal history; and an argument that it is never too late to reconnect with what was lost' SALLY HAYDEN

'A compelling story from a gifted storyteller … In a moment where refugees are often talked about but rarely heard from, her voice breaks through' GARY YOUNGE

A staggering investigation into the costs and consequences of displacement, from a young woman uniquely placed to explore the refugee experience and its aftershocks

In 2015, Aamna Mohdin travelled to Calais to report from the frontlines of the refugee crisis. When she returned to London, and discussed what she had seen with her parents, their response surprised her: didn't she remember being a refugee herself?

Aamna was faced with a reality she had been outrunning for nearly two decades: that her parents had been refugees of the Somali civil war; and that her arrival in the UK aged seven had been preceded by an early childhood in a refugee camp, followed by years of displacement and desperation ? as her family, sometimes together but often separated, fought for a place to call home.

For the first time, Aamna's parents told her their story: of the lives they had built in the newly independent Somalia, and the shattering effects of civil war that followed. From London, she travelled to Somalia, a homecoming to a place that had never been home; before retracing her parents' flight to Kenya, and the Kakuma refugee camp ? the site of a very present refugee crisis, now three decades in the making.

Scattered is a staggering investigation into the costs and consequences of displacement, from a young woman uniquely placed to explore the refugee experience and its aftershocks. A powerful reportage, it is also an epic story of returns and reunions; and a joyful celebration of family and belonging.

'The only way out of the crisis of exclusion sweeping across the Atlantic Ocean is storytelling … In so luminously recounting the story of her family Mohdin achieves an imaginative breakthrough that everyone should read' SAMUEL MOYN, Professor of Law and History at Yale University

Scattered Seeds In Search of Family and Identity in the Sperm Donor Generation【電子書籍】[ Jacqueline Mroz ]

As typical as donor-conceived children have become, with at least a million such children in the US alone, their experiences are still unusual in many ways. In Scattered Seeds, journalist and writer Jacqueline Mroz looks at the growth of sperm donation and assisted reproduction and how it affects the children who are born, the women who buy and use the sperm to have kids, and the sperm donors who donate their genetic material to help others procreate. With empathy and in-depth analysis, Scattered Seeds explores the sociology, psychology, and anthropology surrounding those connected with fertility procedures today and looks back at the history that brought us to this point.

The personal stories in this book will put a human face on the issues and help to illuminate this country's controversial and troubling unregulated fertility industry-an industry that has been compared to the Wild, Wild West, where anything goes. What is the human cost of our country's unregulated fertility industry? How are the lives of sperm-donor families changed? Scattered Seeds will answer those questions, considering carefully the social and psychological dynamics surrounding those connected with fertility procedures today.

Jews in the Early Modern English Imagination A Scattered Nation【電子書籍】[ Eva Johanna Holmberg ]

Based on travel writings, religious history and popular literature, Jews in the Early Modern English Imagination explores the encounter between English travellers and the Jews. While literary and religious traditions created an image of Jews as untrustworthy, even sinister, travellers came to know them in their many and diverse communities with rich traditions and intriguing life-styles. The Jew of the imagination encountered the Jew of town and village, in southern Europe, North Africa and the Levant. Coming from an England riven by religious disputes and often by political unrest, travellers brought their own questions about identity, national character, religious belief and the quality of human relations to their encounter with 'the scattered nation'.

Scattered The inside story of Ice in Australia【電子書籍】[ Malcolm Knox ]

An investigation into the escalating Ice crisis in Australia.

I don't know in the time I've been a policeman, which is 41 years, of a greater scourge on the community. The physical and mental manifestations of ice are absolutely horrific. It has the potential to destroy generations.' Former NSW Police Commissioner Ken Moroney

An act of violence while on crystal meth seems to burst boundaries; the perpetrator keeps on hitting and hitting, not knowing why, just going on beyond any purpose or restraint, repeating the action as mindlessly as playing cards or popping Sudafeds out of blister packs.'

From Scattered

Crystal methamphetamine. Crystal meth. Crystal. Ice. A drug that came out of nowhere and instantly turned things upside down: for users, their families, police, healthcare workers and victims of the random, hyper-violent crimes that are the mark of ice. Nearly 1 in 10 Australians have tried ice.

Scattered is the word coined by some users to describe the trance-like ferocity that can accompany an ice binge, escalating common crime to a terrifying level of violence. According to support workers on the front line, official statistics have yet to recognise that users have trebled over the last two years and hospital admissions for ice-related psychosis more than doubled.

Walkley award-winning journalist Malcolm Knox examines the ice problem in Australia from the points of view of users, dealers, police, lawyers, doctors, pharmacists and families affected by the drug. Each story he tells goes beyond the statistics and headlines to explore the human cost of ice and to consider its future in Australia.

Autumn's Capricious Leaves Scattered in the Wind【電子書籍】[ Ralston Anthony Rhoden Jr ]

This book is a collection of my award-winning personal poems, offering a raw and intimate glimpse into the inner world of what it means to be known as "man." Through this journey, you'll encounter haunting truths that stir fear in the most dramatic ways, alongside the quiet beauty found within the struggle of the Black man striving for equality in a world that often resists it.The path winds through a landscape of darkness, where nightmares become strangely beautiful freedoms-moments that lure you in and transform into dreams. As we move forward, we explore the relentless search for love, guided by rules we never agreed to, only to uncover that true love stems from choice, not obligation. This poetic journey travels through shadowy forests with twisted, jagged branches and opens into luminous fields of green, where lavender dances in the breeze. And beyond even these scenes lie poems filled with emotion, contrast, and truth-waiting to be discovered.

A Winter in Retirement: Scattered Leaves【電子書籍】[ Hannah Blaney Washburn ]

“And this is the end of all our plans and anticipations for the winter? Oh, Mary, what shall we do through this long dreary season of nearly six months? No balls, no parties, indeed, no society, shut up in my aunt’s lonely house, with nothing to amuse us but the sound of the dismal waves, dashing against the rocks, the mournful wind, whistling through that forest of apple trees, and not a man to be seen but old Philip”ーand here the voice of the speaker was stopped by her tears which were, however, soon soothed by the mild and gentle voice of her sister. “Do look on the bright side of things, dear Susan,” said she, “you forget, how, when we were little girls, we used to love that orchard, how many merry plays we have had among those trees, and how many stories old Phillip would tell us; then, the beautiful shells we picked up upon the little beach, at the foot of the rocks,”ー“But that was in the summer, Mary, when you know it is pleasant out doors, and that was when we were so young, and so easily amused, but now it is so very different, and then Aunt Wilson is so very, very piousーOh; she will not let us read anything but sermons, or sing anything but psalm tunes.” This was, indeed, but a gloomy prospect for a gay young girl of seventeen, and it required more stoicism than Susan Morton possessed to view it with indifference. The illness of their father, the necessity of his seeking a warmer climate through the winter, and his wish that his wife should accompany him, were the reasons which had induced him to trust his daughters, during his absence, to the care of his sister, a widow lady of much respectability, who resided near the sea-coast, and, who, since the death of her husband, had devoted her time and talents to the education of her children, two sons and a daughter; and, it was after bidding a sorrowful adieu to their parents, and finding themselves shut up in the carriage, which was to convey them to their winter home, that this conversation commenced. Susan was the youngest of the two sisters, a lively beautiful girl, very fond of society, and always the life and animation of every circle. She had formed many gay schemes of pleasure for the coming winter, the winter after she entered her seventeenth year, which had been all dispersed by the gradual but increasing illness of her father, and she had listened to the arrangement which had consigned her to the care of her aunt through that season which she had anticipated with so much delight with a dissatisfaction and gloom, which prevented her from seeing anything pleasant in their winter abode, or seizing upon any circumstances to soften her disappointment. Not so with Mary; with as lively a disposition as her sister, she still possessed the happy talent of extracting pleasure from any situation, and enjoying herself under almost any circumstances, and now endeavored, with earnest kindness, to bring to her remembrance many little events of their early youth, connected with their aunt and her family, which would aid in restoring her tranquility, and she succeeded, for before their arrival at their destined home, Susan had joined in many a merry laugh at some pleasant recollection. The evening of a dull November day closed in before they arrived at the end of their journey, the monotonous dashing of the waves against the beach sounded drearily, and the chilly air, and the gloomy appearance of the sky made them welcome the bright light, which they knew, streamed from the retired dwelling of their aunt. The carriage now turned into the lane which led to the house, and they were greeted at the porch by the kind old Philip, whose hair seemed not a shade whiter, nor his face a whit more wrinkled than when, five years before, two lively little girls, they bade him “good-bye,” at that very door.

The Scattered Court Hindustani Music in Colonial Bengal【電子書籍】[ Richard David Williams ]

Presents a new history of how Hindustani court music responded to the political transitions of the nineteenth century.

How far did colonialism transform north Indian music? In the period between the Mughal empire and the British Raj, how did the political landscape bleed into aesthetics, music, dance, and poetry? Examining musical culture through a diverse and multilingual archive, primarily using sources in Urdu, Bengali, and Hindi that have not been translated or critically examined before, The Scattered Court challenges our assumptions about the period. Richard David Williams presents a long history of interactions between northern India and Bengal, with a core focus on the two courts of Wajid Ali Shah (1822?1887), the last ruler of the kingdom of Awadh. He charts the movement of musicians and dancers between the two courts in Lucknow and Matiyaburj, as well as the transregional circulation of intellectual traditions and musical genres, and demonstrates the importance of the exile period for the rise of Calcutta as a celebrated center of Hindustani classical music. Since Lucknow is associated with late Mughal or Nawabi society and Calcutta with colonial modernity, examining the relationship between the two cities sheds light on forms of continuity and transition over the nineteenth century, as artists and their patrons navigated political ruptures and social transformations. The Scattered Court challenges the existing historiography of Hindustani music and Indian culture under colonialism by arguing that our focus on Anglophone sources and modernizing impulses has directed us away from the aesthetic subtleties, historical continuities, and emotional dimensions of nineteenth-century music.

Scattered and Gathered Catholics in Diaspora【

This volume takes its title from the first-century Christian catechism called the Didache: "Even as this broken bread was scattered over the hills . . . gathered together and became one, so let Your Church be gathered together from the ends of the earth." For Christians today, these words remain relevant in an era of massive human movements (voluntary and coerced), hybrid identities, and wide-ranging cultural interactions. How do modern Christians live as both a "scattered" and "gathered" people? How do they live out the tension between ecclesial universality (catholicity) and particularity (distinctive ways of being church in a given culture and context)? Do Christians today constitute a "diaspora," a people dispersed across borders and cultures that nonetheless maintains a sense of commonality and mission? Scattered and Gathered: Catholics in Diaspora explores these questions through the work of fourteen scholars in different fields and from different corners of the world. Whether through reflections on Zimbabweans in Britain, Levantines in North America, or the remote island people of Chiloe now living in other parts of Chile, they guide readers along the winding road of insights and challenges facing many of today's Christians.

101 Ways to Get Present Feel More Focused, Less Scattered and Happier in 30 Seconds or Less【電子書籍】[ Andrew Wien ]

You might feel like something is off. You continue to achieve more and more, but it isn't feeling how you imagined. Improving time management, finding productivity hacks, or squeezing more out of your calendar just doesn't have the desired effect. You learn how to do more, but to what end?

Andrew Wien went on this journey too. On paper he had a great trajectory-good job, good health, too many hobbies to count. But he was miserable.

"I had a problem with time. There just never seemed to be enough."

He had thought the key to happiness was fitting more into each day. Through a bunch of trial and (mostly) error, including living and climbing out of his truck, meditating in forests, and starting his own company, Wien discovered that it had nothing to do with managing time. It was about just being right here, right now.

Since then, Wien has worked with thousands of folks at tech companies, startups, and management consulting firms, helping people be more focused and less scattered when the demands of their jobs encourage the opposite. This book is a culmination of that work.

101 Ways to Get Present shares how we can leverage the power of habit to routinely be in the moment. This simple approach will allow you to make progress without needing more time, more motivation, or even more mental space to figure out how to apply what you've learned.

It's all done here, for you.

Scattered Under the Rising Sun The Gordon Highlanders in the Far East, 1941?1945【電子書籍】[ Stewart Mitchell ]

The harrowing true story of the Scottish battalion that spent over three years in Japanese captivity during World War II.

Posted to Singapore in 1937 with their families, the members of the 2nd Battalion, Gordon Highlanders found themselves fighting bravely when the Japanese invaded Malaya in December 1941. But by mid-February came the surrender of Singapore, and those who were not killed became POWs.

After initial incarceration in Singapore, the Gordons were dispersed to work on the famous Thai-Burma railway, in the mines of Taiwan and Japan, and on other slave labor projects. The conditions they existed under defy modern comprehension. Others died trapped in hell-ships torpedoed by allied submarines. Of the thousand men involved initially, over four hundred had died before liberation in summer 1945. Despite their diverse backgrounds, all the men had been bound by close regimental spirit, and all suffered hard labor, starvation, brutality, and tropical diseases. Rank was no protection from death.

The author of this history has researched the plight of these extraordinary men, so many of whom never saw their native Scotland again. Despite the grim conditions, he captures the strong collective regimental spirit and the humor and cooperation that saved so many who would otherwise have perished. This is an inspiring tale of courage and survival against appalling odds.

Petrarch's Canzoniere Scattered Rhymes in a New Verse Translation【電子書籍】[ Francesco Petrarch ]

Francesco Petrarch’s Canzoniere (translated in English as ‘Scattered Rhymes’) is a collection of 14th century poems famed for their deep exploration of love, grief, spirituality and nature. Written over the course of forty years (approximately between 1328-1368), this collection includes 317 sonnets, 29 canzoni, 9 sestine, 4 madrigals and 7 ballate. These Scattered Rhymes almost always return to Laura, a women who Petrarch loves deeply, whom he first saw on a Good Friday. On this same day, some years later, Laura died. But Petrarch’s love does not wane, in fact at points it burns brighter. Il Canzoniere also serves as a valuable contemporary insight into 14th century religion and the role of the papacy in Christendom. Petrarch’s work is one of civilization’s most immaculate achievements. Michael R. G. Spiller regards Il Canzoniere as ‘the single greatest inspiration for the love poetry of Renaissance Europe until well into the seventeenth century’. Following his acclaimed translation of Dante’s Inferno, which ‘immediately joins ranks with the very best available in English’ (Dr Richard Lansing), Peter Thornton brings the poetry of Petrarch to the 21st Century in direct and luminous verse.

A generalized Radon transform (GRT) maps a function to its weighted integrals along a family of curves or surfaces. Such operators appear in mathematical models of various imaging modalities. The GRTs integrating along smooth curves and surfaces (lines, planes, circles, spheres, amongst others) have been studied at great lengths for decades, but relatively little attention has been paid to transforms integrating along non-smooth trajectories. Recently, an interesting new class of GRTs emerged at the forefront of research in integral geometry. The two common features of these transforms are the presence of a 'vertex' in their paths of integration (broken rays, cones, and stars) and their relation to imaging techniques based on physics of scattered particles (Compton camera imaging, single scattering tomography, etc).

This book covers the relevant imaging modalities, their mathematical models, and the related GRTs. The discussion of the latter comprises a thorough exploration of their known mathematical properties, including injectivity, inversion, range description and microlocal analysis. The mathematical background required for reading most of the book is at the level of an advanced undergraduate student, which should make its content attractive for a large audience of specialists interested in imaging. Mathematicians may appreciate certain parts of the theory that are particularly elegant with connections to functional analysis, PDEs and algebraic geometry.

Contents:

Preface

About the Author

Particle Transport and Scattering Tomography:

Radiation Transport Equation

Scattered Particle Tomography

Generalized Radon Transforms 'With a Vertex':

V-line and Conical Radon Transforms in Slab Geometry

V-line Transforms in Curvilinear Geometry

Star Transform

Transforms on Vector Fields

Appendix A: Mathematical Tools

Bibliography

Index

Readership: Advanced undergraduate and graduate students, mathematicians, engineers and physicists interested in mathematical models of image reconstruction using scattered particles.
Key Features:

A self-contained book covering the state of the art in the subject is timely and can be of great value for both researchers and practitioners

Substantial amount of work has been done in these fields, the results are scattered across journal articles in various disciplines, some of which are hard to read for non-experts. Scattered Lights in the Darkness【電子書籍】[ Alexandra R. LaFlam ]

This book is a journey of what it's like to be in active addiction with untreated mental health issues in Vancouver, BC, Canada where we are experiencing a public health emergency due to a opioid crisis. It's an insight of what it's like to wait for a bed at a rehabilitation facility, what it's like having no fixed address and going through the food bank to get my meals, what it's like accepting the life inside institutionalized facilities, and finally, what it's like to live a life in early recovery.

My Chapbook is a curation of my personal narrative poetry including a preamble about where I was then and where I am nearly 10 years later after working on my mental health.

All poems have been performed as spoken word poetry originally and it's been an all time dream of mine to self publish the blood, sweat, and tears of my recovery. I hope what you read helps you understand the mindset and challenges of being in active addiction. There is so much social stigma and it needs to end. The only way it can truly end though is by educating others. So if you're reading this, but you haven't experienced mental health and addiction issues, I hope this book gave you a little perspective of what it's like in the cities jungle.

Thank you for reading about my life story!

Ethiopians in an Age of Migration Scattered lives beyond borders【

The migration of Ethiopians across international borders is a recent phenomenon because of the limited integration of the country and society to the global economy. Since it was never colonized ? aside from the Italian occupation of 1936-1941 ? Ethiopia’s economy and society were not directly impacted by the ebb and flow of the global economy, and thus never generated international migration. Beginning in the 1970s, due to factors such as famine, rural poverty, civil war, and political repression, an unprecedented number of Ethiopian migrants began to leave their country in search of better, more secure lives. Today, this diaspora constitutes a distinctive community dispersed across the world, but bound by a common feeling of collectiveness and a shared history of the homeland.

The contributors to this volume draw their work from a wide variety of interdisciplinary fields and provide new critical insight on Ethiopian migrants and their diaspora communities. What has emerged from these scholarly works is the recognition that the Ethiopian diaspora ? although separated by oceans and nations, by politics, ethnicity, class, gender and age ? are carving out a social and material world born out of their particular circumstances both "here" and "there". This book was originally published as a special issue of African and Black Diaspora: An International Journal.
