The Spectral Piano From Liszt, Scriabin, and Debussy to the Digital Age【電子書籍】[ Marilyn Nonken ]

The most influential compositional movement of the past fifty years, spectralism was informed by digital technology but also extended the aesthetics of pianist-composers such as Franz Liszt, Alexander Scriabin and Claude Debussy. Students of Olivier Messiaen such as Tristan Murail and G?rard Grisey sought to create a cooperative committed to exploring the evolution of timbre in time as a basis for the musical experience. In The Spectral Piano, Marilyn Nonken shows how the spectral attitude was influenced by developments in technology but also continued a tradition of performative and compositional virtuosity. Nonken explores shared fascinations with the musical experience, which united spectralists with their Romantic and early Modern predecessors. Examining Murail's Territoires de l'oubli, Jonathan Harvey's Tombeau de Messiaen, Joshua Fineberg's Veils, and Edmund Campion's A Complete Wealth of Time, she reveals how spectral concerns relate not only to the past but also to contemporary developments in philosophical aesthetics.

Like Chopin, Scriabin made the piano the focus of his art. Among the supreme achievements of that art are the ten sonatas he composed between 1892 and 1913, works that abundantly display both his technical virtuosity and the exhilarating emotional gamut he ranged with such individuality.
All ten of Scriabin's sonatas are reprinted here from the authoritative Russian edition published in 1964. The first four reveal the influences of the pianism of Chopin and Liszt. The subsequent sonatas richly display Scriabin's emerging impressionist techniques and his deep attraction to mysticism, which progressively conjured a more and more ethereal framework of sound, now brooding and introspective, now rhapsodic and exultant.
In both their technical requirements and their emotional demands, these brilliant works will offer pianists a deeply satisfying challenge. Nonpianists will also enjoy this finely made edition, with which they may follow, music in hand, the growing number of loved and recorded performances of these masterpieces.

The Alexander Scriabin Companion History, Performance, and Lore【電子書籍】[ Lincoln Ballard, author of The Alexander Scriabin Companion ]

This unique collaboration between a musicologist and two pianists ? all experts in Russian music ? takes a fresh look at the supercharged music and polarizing reception of the Russian composer Alexander Scriabin. From his Chopin-inspired miniatures to his genre-bending symphonies and avant-garde late works, Scriabin left a unique mark on music history. Scriabin’s death centennial in 2015 brought wider exposure and renewed attention to this pioneering composer. Music lovers who are curious about Scriabin have been torn between specialized academic studies and popular sources that glamorize his interests and activities, often at the expense of historical accuracy. This book bridges the divide between these two branches of literature, and brings a modern perspective to his music and legacy.

Drawing on archival materials, primary sources in Russian, and recently published books and articles, Part One details the reception and performance history of Scriabin’s solo piano and orchestral music. High quality recordings are recommended for each piece. Part Two explores four topics in Scriabin’s reception: the myths generated by Scriabin’s biographers, his claims to synaesthesia or “color-hearing,” his revival in 1960s America as a proto-Flower Child, and the charges of anti-Russianness leveled against his music. Part Three investigates stylistic context and performance practice in the piano music, and considers the domains of sound, rhythm, and harmony. It offers interpretive strategies for deciphering Scriabin’s challenging scores at the keyboard.

Students, scholars, and music enthusiasts will benefit from the historical insights offered in this interdisciplinary book. Armed with this knowledge, readers will be able to better appreciate the stylistic innovations and colorful imagination of this extraordinary composer.

Skryabin Mysterium Dream Mind of Alexander Scriabin【電子書籍】[ Georgiana Peacher ]

Georgiana Peachers SKRYABIN MYSTERIUM is a work that begins before language. Its qualities tap bedrock in some dangerous, thrilling primordial slide out from under birdsong, clay flute, wind through foliage like the sound of fire like rain. These are poems born through suffering into words so spare they startle. The story they chart, the psychic marriage they intuit-the story of a young boy and a poet who greet each other at the door of time-is so imaginative and stunning that the reader is changed by its power, its griefs and joys, and the music, at times tragic, at others ecstatic, lingers now inside each of us. Peacher convinces that for the artist there is a stillness at the center of being, currents in the air around us, currents that pass through us here at the threshold of the present, the possible, where pussywillow gray spirits charcoal sky

- Deborah Digges

Georgiana Peacher in Mary Stuarts Ravishment Descending Time may well have given us the greatest passage on yellow eyes ever written

- Alexander Theroux

The Complete Preludes and Etudes for Pianoforte Solo【電子書籍】[ Alexander Scriabin ]

Alexander Nikolayevitch Scriabin (1872?1915), Russian composer and pianist, is best known for his perfectly spun miniatures where his novel harmonic and pianistic ideas were most brilliantly worked out. This volume in Dover's continuing series of musical scores presents the best of Scriabin's works, his complete etudes and preludes for the solo piano.
There are the Chopinesque works from his early period, including the 12 etudes from Op. 8 and the 24 Preludes, Op. 11. The works of the middle period, when he began working out his new harmonies based on a series of fourths, include the outstanding sets of Preludes, Opp. 33 and 48, and the Etudes, Op. 42. The 5 Preludes, Op. 74, and the Etudes, Op. 65, from the final period reveal perhaps most about his joyous ecstasy and languid contemplation, moods which no other composer could express to such a degree. There are also the preludes and etudes from Opp. 2, 9, 13, 15, 16, 17, 22, 27, 31, 35, 37, 39, 45, 49, 51, 59, and 67, each containing miniatures working out some subtle harmonic, rhythmic, or melodic idea with a perfect pianistic sense of writing.
This book has been especially designed as a playing edition ー the noteheads are large and easily readable at the piano, and the margins and spaces between staves are adequate for written notes, fingerings, and turnovers. It is also most useful for analysis, or simply for following along with the actual music.

Mazurkas, Poemes, Impromptus and Other Pieces for Piano【電子書籍】[ Alexander Scriabin ]

This unique volume of Alexander Scriabin's piano music combines all of the Russian composer's widely admired Po?mes, which exude the richness and complexity of his later style, with virtually all of the earlier, more Chopinesque Mazurkas and all eight Impromptus. The complete collection contains 75 piano works of varying length and difficulty, including a number of compositions with unique titles.
In style, they represent the full span of Scriabin's musical life, from his early romanticism to the bold chromaticism, mysticism, and ecstatic fervor of his mature period. In technique, these compositions embody Scriabin's distinctive keyboard invention, vividly displaying his use of chords built on unusual intervals, unconventional rhythmic groupings, use of the trill for coloristic effect, and rich, luxuriant sonority. Pianists will find in these highly original works, reprinted here from authoritative Russian editions, piano music that intimately reveals one of the most distinctive musical personalities of the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

The Performing Style of Alexander Scriabin【電子書籍】[ Anatole Leikin ]

When Alexander Nikolayevich Scriabin's music was performed during his lifetime, it always elicited ecstatic responses from the listeners. Wilhelm Gericke, conductor of the Vienna opera, rushed backstage after one of Scriabin's concerts and fell on his knees crying, 'It's genius, it's genius...'. After the composer’s death in 1915, however, his music steadily lost the captivating appeal it once held. The main reason for this drastic change in the listeners’ attitude is an enormous gap existing between the printed scores of Scriabin’s music and the way the composer himself played his works. Apparently, what Scriabin's audiences heard at the time was significantly different from, and vastly superior to, modern performances that are based primarily on published scores. Scriabin recorded nineteen of his compositions on the Hupfeld and Welte-Mignon reproducing pianos in 1908 and 1910, respectively. Full score transcriptions of the piano rolls, which are included in the book, provide many substantial features of Scriabin's performance: exact pitches and their timing against each other, rhythms, tempo fluctuations, articulation, dynamics and essential pedal application. Using these transcriptions and other historical documents as the groundwork for his research, Anatole Leikin explores Scriabin's performing style within the broader context of Romantic performance practice.
