Here are the indelible tales “Madame Zilensky and the King of Finland” and “A Tree. A Rock. A Cloud.” as well as her previously uncollected story about the civil rights movement, “The March”; her award- winning Broadway play The Member of the Wedding and the unpublished teleplay The Sojourner; twenty-two essays; and the revealing unfinished memoir Illumination and Night Glare. Pritchett praised for her “courageous imaginationーone that is bold enough to consider the terrible in human nature without loss of nerve, calm, dignity, or love.”

LIBRARY OF AMERICA is an independent nonprofit cultural organization founded in 1979 to preserve our nation’s literary heritage by publishing, and keeping permanently in print, America’s best and most significant writing. The Narrative of Sojourner Truth (Unabridged) Including her famous Speech Ain't I a Woman? (Inspiring Memoir of One Incredible Woman)【電子書籍】[ Sojourner Truth ]
|

The Narrative of Sojourner Truth is a powerful autobiographical account that chronicles the life of its author, Sojourner Truth, a former enslaved woman who became an iconic figure in the fight for abolition and women's rights in the 19th century. Through her compelling and eloquent prose, Truth employs a unique rhetorical style that merges the oral tradition of African American storytelling with the intellectual rigor of abolitionist literature. This unabridged version captures the raw and unfiltered essence of her experiences, emphasizing themes of resilience, identity, and social justice against the backdrop of a nation grappling with deep-rooted inequalities. Sojourner Truth, born in New York in 1797, endured the brutal realities of slavery before rising as a formidable advocate for change. Her life experiences, marked by trauma and liberation, compelled her to share her story as a means of educating the public about the inhumanity of slavery and advocating for women's rights. Truth's prominence as a speaker and activist was amplified by her profound spiritual beliefs, which she entwined with her calls for equality, making her narrative not just a personal account but a critical intervention in social discourse. This seminal work is essential reading for anyone interested in American history, social justice, or feminist theory. Truth's voice resonates powerfully today, inviting readers to reflect on the continuing struggles for equality and the importance of personal testimony in the quest for justice. Her narrative not only informs but inspires, making it a vital addition to the canon of American literature.

|

Why They Hate Us presents a compelling study of Ndigbo ? norms, cultures and ‘Igbosyncracies’. Born out of the author’s desire to understand the widespread negative perception of Ndigbo within and outside of Nigeria, this book argues that Igbos have themselves contributed to creating and fostering this image. Having lived in several regions across Nigeria, and now abroad, the author capitalizes on his experience and shares succinctly the outsider’s view of Ndigbo, which is often negative. This thought-provoking book challenges Ndigbo ? and, indeed, people of all races and cultures ? to redefine themselves by treading a worthy path and leaving a legacy that humanity can be proud of.

Sojourner in Islamic Lands【電子書籍】[ Russell Fraser ]
|

Sojourner in Islamic Lands takes us on a journey from Kazakhstan in the far north of Central Asia, across the mountains to the former Soviet Union, then south to Iran just below the Caspian Sea. Russell Fraser follows the ancient Silk Road wherever possible. For centuries the Silk Road was the primary commercial link between Europe and Asia, with much of it over desert sands and accessible only by camel. Building on history and personal experience, Fraser's narrative describes this vast territory with an eye to geography, artistic culture, and religion over more than two thousand years.

The book that he gives us depends first of all on travel, but the author's eye is on an interior landscape, and he focuses on the influence of religious ideology on the cultural landscape of Central Asia. Delving deeply into art and architecture, he takes them to be Islam's most significant creative expressions. Although Islam is currently the predominant religion in the region, the book also examines the two other belief systems with modern-day followersーChristianity and an antireligious sect Fraser calls secular progressivism.

His aim is to present Islam to Western readers by describing its achievements during the High Middle Ages and comparing and contrasting them with those of modern Islam. The book offers insights into the history of a major world religion through the eyes of a well-known literary scholar on a journey through exotic parts of the world. He steeps us in the latter, inviting the reader to share the journey with him and participate in the sensations it gives rise to.

Narrative of Sojourner Truth【電子書籍】[ Sojourner Truth ]
|

One of the most famous and admired African American women in U.S. history, Sojourner Truth sang, preached, and debated at camp meetings across the country, led by her devotion to the antislavery movement and her ardent pursuit of women's rights. Born into slavery in 1797, Truth fled from bondage some 30 years later to become a powerful figure in the progressive movements reshaping American society.
This remarkable narrative, first published in 1850, offers a rare glimpse into the little-documented world of Northern slavery. Truth recounts her life as a slave in rural New York, her separation from her family, her religious conversion, and her life as a traveling preacher during the 1840s. She also describes her work as a social reformer, counselor of former slaves, and sponsor of a black migration to the West.
A spellbinding orator and implacable prophet, Truth mesmerized audiences with her tales of life in bondage and with her moving renditions of Methodist hymns and her own songs. Frederick Douglass described her message as a "strange compound of wit and wisdom, of wild enthusiasm, and flint-like common sense." This inspiring account of a black woman's struggles for racial and sexual equality is essential reading for students of American history, as well as for those interested in the continuing quest for equality of opportunity.

Narrative of Sojourner Truth【電子書籍】[ Sojourer Truth ]
|

The Narrative of Sojourner Truth is the memoir of an African-American woman who struggled against the bondages of slavery in the early 1800s. It is one of the most famous slave narratives of all time and is one of the most important documents of slavery ever written. This is her story. This is her voice. Dictated to her friend Olive Gilbert and first published privately in 1850, this partial autobiography of the woman who became a pioneer in the struggles for racial and sexual equality is a lens into the little-known world of northern slavery and an inspiring account of a black woman striving for personal and political empowerment. Truth was born into slavery around 1797 but managed to escape with her infant daughter in 1826. She found refuge in the home of Isaac and Maria Van Wagenen of New Paltz, New York and in 1828, became the first black woman to win a case against a white man when she sued to recover her son, who was still enslaved. Born Isabella Baumfree, Sojourner changed her name to signify her belief that God had tasked her with the mission to go forth and preach the message of abolition. Her strong spirituality helped her overcome the many struggles she faced in life and enabled her to become a leading abolitionist and champion of women’s rights. This narrative bears witness to Sojourner Truth's thirty years of bondage and her transformation into an extraordinary abolitionist, feminist, orator, and preacher. She is the passionate woman on the Smithsonian Institution’s list of “100 Most Significant Americans. It is a must read for anyone interested in that dark period of time in American history.

|

This book is about the power of faith, love and hope to overcome difficult personal limitations. For the first four years of his life David Adams barely survived premature birth and repeated high fevers. When he began to recover, he was adopted by Gideon Adams, a man that created and supported the care facility that received him. Their deep relationship, encouraged by caregivers and teachers allowed David to overcome the inevitable learning difficulties that came from those first years. It gave him a willingness to be patient with himself, learning to focus his efforts and achieve understanding and skills that made him a loyal friend and an able Army Aviator. The most difficult years, earning his Commission as an Infantry Officer and surviving physical challenges like vertigo to earn his wings were supported by his wife, Lisa, who opened his mind and vision and gave him the determination not only to succeed but to do it within the demands of his faith. As an Aviation Advisor in the Korean Military Advisor Group, instructor pilot and Test pilot, and early unit commander he fought hard to succeed without compromise. He dealt with a seizure disorder that ended his ability to fly and limited his options for civilian employment. This a work of fiction but the struggles of living with limitations that have no visible manifestation are very personal to me. My hope is that readers will see that faith and love can overcome nearly impossible challenges.

The Involuntary Sojourner Stories【電子書籍】[ S.P. Tenhoff ]

A debut collection of stories, uncanny and profound.

In this striking debut, S. P. Tenhoff takes us to real and imagined countries around the globe, where characters find themselves passengers on voyages beyond the boundaries of their familiar world and their understanding of themselves. A town is split in two, a line painted down the middle, when two warring governments decide, arbitrarily, to redraw borders. A man hits a boy in a car accident that he begins to suspect might not have been an accident after all. An aging puppeteer in Edo-period Japan struggles to choose a successor before dementia overtakes him. And in the title story, a mysterious illness causes its victims to travel like sleepwalkers to distant countries, where they wake to discover that they are now fluent in languages and cultures they previously didn't know at all. Uncanny and profound, these ten stories capture those pivotal moments when our sense of place and self is forever shaken, and we must chart a new course.

Liberian Child in Exile An African Sojourner【電子書籍】[ Dr. Tarnue Johnson ]

This book is entirely a work of fiction. In this sense, it completely reflects a figment of my imagination and not much more. However, the places named in the book are real. While some of the events mentioned in the story may tend to loosely mimic aspects of reality, they do not capture those actual experiences in terms of the real settings, manners, and sequences in which they occurred.
Readers should note that there are three themes that permeate this book. They are friendship, family, and the virtues of education and collaborative undertakings as higher ethical aspirations.
