Whiteness at the Abyss A Lacanian Reading of ‘White Anxiety’【電子書籍】[ Derek Hook ]

‘Whiteness’ is an omnipresent term within research on race and racism. This book differs from existing conceptualizations by adopting a psychoanalytic line of approach and by directing its attention to a particular socio-historical instantiation of whitenessーthe investments, fantasies and fears apparent within (post) apartheid South African contexts. It foregrounds the notion of ‘white anxiety’, which is conceptualized not only via notions of psychical temporality, but with reference to the dystopian visions of the future, ideas of inter-generational guilt, and fantasies of demise. To posit an imagined ‘end to whiteness’ is not, of course, an uncontroversial gesture; the closing section of the book surveys the key themesーantisemitism, white Nationalism, the trope of the race traitorーin online attacks the author was subjected to. This compelling work will appeal to all those with an interest in psychoanalytic approaches to race and racism, and to anyone working in the areas of critical race and whiteness studies.

The Invention of the White Race The Origin of Racial Oppression【電子書籍】[ Theodore W Allen ]

When the first Africans arrived in Virginia in 1619, there were no 'white' people there; nor, according to colonial records, would there be for another sixty years. Historical debate about the origin of racial slavery has focused on the status of the Negro in seventeenth-century Virginia and Maryland. However, as Theodore W. Allen argues in this magisterial work, what needs to be studied is the transformation of English, Scottish, Irish and other European colonists from their various statuses as servants, tenants, planters or merchants into a single new all-inclusive status: that of whites. This is the key to the paradox of American history, of a democracy resting on race assumptions.

Volume One of this two-volume work attempts to escape the 'white blind spot' which has distorted consecutive studies of the issue. It does so by looking in the mirror of Irish history for a definition of racial oppression and for an explanation of that phenomenon in terms of social control, free from the absurdities of classification by skin color. Compelling analogies are presented between the history of Anglo-Irish and British rule in Ireland and American White Supremacist oppression of Indians and African-Americans. But the relativity of race is shown in the sea change it entailed, whereby emigrating Irish haters of racial oppression were transformed into White Americans who defended it. The reasons for the differing outcomes of Catholic Emancipation and Negro Emancipation are considered and occasion is made to demonstrate Allen's distinction between racial and national oppression.

Black and White: Land, Labor, and Politics in the South Race, Labor, and Power: A Deep Dive into Post-Civil War South【電子書籍】[ Timothy Thomas Fortune ]

In "Black and White: Land, Labor, and Politics in the South," Timothy Thomas Fortune presents a profound examination of the socio-political landscape of the Southern United States during the post-Civil War era. The book is a critical analysis of the interwoven dynamics of race, land ownership, and labor relations, articulating the myriad challenges faced by newly freed African Americans in a segregated society. Fortune employs a compelling narrative style marked by rhetorical finesse and incisive commentary, reflecting the broader themes of Reconstruction and its failures. Through meticulous research and firsthand accounts, he paints a vivid picture of the systemic oppression that pervaded the South, revealing the stark contrasts between the lives of black and white citizens. Timothy Thomas Fortune was an influential African American journalist, editor, and political activist who laid bare the injustices faced by black Americans in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. His own experiences with racial discrimination and his commitment to advocating for civil rights deeply informed the creation of this work. Fortune's editorial positions, particularly with publications like the "New York Age," provided him a platform to address the socio-economic disparities and political disenfranchisement he passionately opposed. I wholeheartedly recommend "Black and White" to scholars and general readers alike, for it not only contextualizes the historical struggles of African Americans but also serves as a potent reminder of the legacies of inequality that continue to resonate today. Fortune's eloquent prose and astute observations not only inform but also challenge readers to reflect on the enduring implications of race and power in contemporary society.

And we recognize how right she is today. Yet the voters who boosted Trump all the way to the White House have been a permanent part of our American fabric, argues Isenberg.

The wretched and landless poor have existed from the time of the earliest British colonial settlement to today's hillbillies. They were alternately known as “waste people,” “offals,” “rubbish,” “lazy lubbers,” and “crackers.” By the 1850s, the downtrodden included so-called “clay eaters” and “sandhillers,” known for prematurely aged children distinguished by their yellowish skin, ragged clothing, and listless minds.

Surveying political rhetoric and policy, popular literature and scientific theories over four hundred years, Isenberg upends assumptions about America’s supposedly class-free society??where liberty and hard work were meant to ensure real social mobility. Poor whites were central to the rise of the Republican Party in the early nineteenth century, and the Civil War itself was fought over class issues nearly as much as it was fought over slavery. Reconstruction pitted poor white trash against newly freed slaves, which factored in the rise of eugenics?-a widely popular movement embraced by Theodore Roosevelt that targeted poor whites for sterilization. These poor were at the heart of New Deal reforms and LBJ’s Great Society; they haunt us in reality TV shows like Here Comes Honey Boo Boo and Duck Dynasty. Marginalized as a class, white trash have always been at or near the center of major political debates over the character of the American identity.

We acknowledge racial injustice as an ugly stain on our nation’s history. With Isenberg’s landmark book, we will have to face the truth about the enduring, malevolent nature of class as well.

Originally published in 1998. In his earlier books such as Tropics of Discourse and The Content of the Form, Hayden White focused on the conventions of historical writing and on the ordering of historical consciousness. In Figural Realism, White collects eight interrelated essays primarily concerned with the treatment of history in recent literary critical discourse. "'History' is not only an object we can study," writes White, "it is also and even primarily a certain kind of relationship to 'the past' mediated by a distinctive kind of written discourse. It is because historical discourse is actualized in its culturally significant form as a specific kind of writing that we may consider the relevance of literary theory to both the theory and the practice of historiography."

As Irving unpacks her own long-held beliefs about colorblindness, being a good person, and wanting to help people of color, she reveals how each of these well-intentioned mindsets actually perpetuated her ill-conceived ideas about race. She also explains why and how she's changed the way she talks about racism, works in racially mixed groups, and understands the antiracism movement as a whole. Exercises at the end of each chapter prompt readers to explore their own racialized ideas. Waking Up White's personal narrative is designed to work well as a rapid read, a book group book, or support reading for courses exploring racial and cultural issues.

In Gelett Burgess's enchanting tale, "The White Cat," readers are transported into a whimsical world where feline mystique intertwines with the exploration of love and identity. Written in a lyrical style that echoes the influence of Edwardian literature, Burgess employs playful verse and vivid imagery, creating a tapestry that invites both young and mature readers to delve into its charm. The narrative dances between the realms of fantasy and reality, blurring the lines with its metaphorical undertones, which reflect societal notions of beauty and superficiality prevalent in the early 20th century. Gelett Burgess, a prominent figure in the world of literary nonsense, was not only a writer but also a painter and illustrator, which undoubtedly enriched his imaginative storytelling. His exposure to aesthetic movements and his personal experiences in the artistic milieu shaped his narrative style and thematic choices in this work. Born in 1866, Burgess's background allows him to craft a narrative that satirizes and delights in equal measure, making insights into human and animal behavior both poignant and entertaining. "The White Cat" is highly recommended for readers seeking a blend of humor, whimsy, and social commentary. It offers profound reflections on love and the nature of attraction, wrapped in a delightful narrative that resonates across generations, making it a timeless read for lovers of imaginative literature.

The White Man's Burden Why the West's Efforts to Aid the Rest Have Done So Much Ill and So Little Good【電子書籍】[ William Easterly ]

**From one of the world’s best-known development economistsーan excoriating attack on the tragic hubris of the West’s efforts to improve the lot of the so-called developing world.

"Brilliant at diagnosing the failings of Western intervention in the Third World." ーBusinessWeek**

In his previous book, The Elusive Quest for Growth, William Easterly criticized the utter ineffectiveness of Western organizations to mitigate global poverty, and he was promptly fired by his then-employer, the World Bank. The White Man’s Burden is his widely anticipated counterpunchーa brilliant and blistering indictment of the West’s economic policies for the world’s poor. Sometimes angry, sometimes irreverent, but always clear-eyed and rigorous, Easterly argues that we in the West need to face our own history of ineptitude and draw the proper conclusions, especially at a time when the question of our ability to transplant Western institutions has become one of the most pressing issues we face.
