|

In "An Appeal to the Young," Peter Kropotkin presents a compelling treatise that weaves together philosophy, sociology, and a passionate call for social change. Written in the late 19th century, the book employs a conversational yet didactic tone, intended to inspire the younger generation to embrace ideals of mutual aid and social equity. Kropotkin's literary style is marked by a blend of persuasive rhetoric and vivid examples from history and nature, positioning his anarchist principles as not only viable but essential for human progress in a rapidly industrializing world. This work serves as both a manifesto and a guide, challenging prevailing societal norms and urging for a collective and egalitarian future. Peter Kropotkin, a prominent Russian anarchist and geographer, was deeply influenced by the political upheaval and social injustices of his time. His lived experiences as a nobleman turned revolutionary, coupled with his extensive studies in natural science, shaped his belief in the potentials of cooperation over competition. Kropotkin's commitment to anarchism and civil liberties fueled the fervor with which he addressed the youth, encouraging a break from tradition and outdated authority. This thought-provoking text is recommended for anyone interested in the intersections of politics, philosophy, and social justice. Kropotkin's arguments resonate today, inviting young readers to critically engage with the societal structures around them. John Muir: The Story of My Boyhood and Youth & Letters to a Friend Boyhood, Wilderness, and Letters to a Friend: from Scotland to Wisconsin, Sierra, Yosemite【電子書籍】[ John Muir ]

This carefully crafted ebook: "John Muir: The Story of My Boyhood and Youth & Letters to a Friend (Autobiography With Original Drawings)" is formatted for your eReader with a functional and detailed table of contents. The Story of My Boyhood and Youthreveals the beginnings of the forming of Muir's special relation towards nature. He considered the encounters with nature as quite an adventure and at first, paid special attention to bird life. John Muir understood that to discover truth, he must turn to what he believed were the most accurate sources. In his autobiographical account, The Story of My Boyhood and Youth, he writes that during his childhood, his father made him read the Bible every day. Muir eventually memorized three-quarters of the Old Testament and all of the New Testament. In his autobiography, written near the end of his life, he described his life from childhood years in Scotland and moving to America to student years in Wisconsin. When he was a student in the University of Wisconsin he was a frequent caller at the house of Dr. Ezra S. Carr. The kindness shown him there, and especially the sympathy which Mrs. Carr, as a botanist and a lover of nature, felt in the young manes interests and aims, led to the formation of a lasting friendship. He regarded Mrs. Carr, indeed, as his "spiritual mother," and his letters to her in later years are the outpourings of a sensitive spirit to one who he felt thoroughly understood and sympathized with him. John Muir (1838-1914) was a Scottish-American naturalist, author, environmental philosopher and early advocate of preservation of wilderness in the United States. His letters, essays, and books telling of his adventures in nature, especially in the Sierra Nevada mountains of California, have been read by millions. His activism helped to preserve the Yosemite Valley, Sequoia National Park and other wilderness areas. The Sierra Club, which he founded, is a prominent American conservation organization.

Extract: "If there was any fellow in the Boy's Town fifty years ago who had a good reason to run off it was Pony Baker. Pony was not his real name; it was what the boys called him, because there were so many fellows who had to be told apart, as Big Joe and Little Joe, and Big John and Little John, and Big Bill and Little Bill, that they got tired of telling boys apart that way; and after one of the boys called him Pony Baker, so that you could know him from his cousin Frank Baker, nobody ever called him anything else." William Dean Howells (1837-1920) was an American realist author, literary critic, and playwright. Nicknamed "The Dean of American Letters", he was particularly known for his tenure as editor of the Atlantic Monthly as well as his own prolific writings, including the Christmas story "Christmas Every Day", and the novels The Rise of Silas Lapham and A Traveler from Altruria. Discussions on Youth for the leaders of the future【電子書籍】[ Daisaku Ikeda ]
|
In Discussions on Youth, a dialogue between Daisaku Ikeda, Soka Gakkai International president, and Soka Gakkai youth leaders, Ikeda responds to the myriad of anxieties and harsh realities that universally confront young people and encapsulates the dilemmas facing humanity today. He details practical ways for youth to overcome issues relating to bullying, relationships and insecurity by drawing on and tapping their "inexhaustible wellspring of infinite potential"--or Buddhahood--to forge a robust self and to create both individual happiness and a future of peace for all."Courage," says Ikeda "is the driving force" of our lives. Whether we have courage has a dramatic bearing on our accomplishments, the direction of our lives and happiness. Young people, and indeed each of us, must take action in our own lives and relationships. We must exhibit a "spirit of challenge," set our sights on the future and make continuous and vigorous efforts to work and study toward achieving clearly defined goals. Although difficulties and the suffering they cause are inevitable, Ikeda believes they can, with courage and perseverance, be turned into "energy for our happiness, into fuel for advancement." Failure is giving up on ourselves; success lies in using difficulties as a springboard for growth, renewing determination and taking the next step. "One step," believes Ikeda, "can lead to infinite growth."

The Youth's Coronal Timeless Poems for Young Hearts: A Journey of Virtue and Inspiration【電子書籍】[ Hannah Flagg Gould ]
|

In "The Youth's Coronal," Hannah Flagg Gould crafts a poignant exploration of childhood, innocence, and emerging identity through evocative poetry that resonates with both the tenderness and complexity of youth. Written in the mid-19th century, Gould employs a lyrical style interspersed with vivid imagery and a rich, melancholic tone, capturing the essence of nature and its kinship with human emotion. Her work aligns with the Transcendentalist movement, reflecting a deep appreciation of individualism and the spiritual connections present in a child's experiences with the world around them. Gould, who came from a literary family and was deeply influenced by the societal currents of her time, penned this collection in an era that often overlooked the inner lives of the young. Her own experiences as a poet and her keen observations on the dynamics of childhood provided her with a distinct perspective, allowing her to articulate the joys and sorrows that accompany the journey of growing up. Her writings reveal an empathetic understanding, reinforcing the significance of nurturing a child's imagination and emotional wellbeing. I highly recommend "The Youth's Coronal" for readers seeking a contemplative and beautifully crafted work that speaks not only to the joys of youth but also to the inevitable passage of time. Gould's insightful observations and lyrical prose will resonate with educators, parents, and poetry enthusiasts alike, inviting them to reflect on their own experiences of childhood and the intrinsic value of preserving the delicate threads of innocence.

The Copenhagen Trilogy Childhood; Youth; Dependency【電子書籍】[ Tove Ditlevsen ]
|

A New York Times 10 Best Books of the Year (2021)
An NPR Best Books of the Year (2021)

Called "a masterpiece" by The New York Times, the acclaimed trilogy from Tove Ditlevsen, a pioneer in the field of genre-bending confessional writing.

Tove Ditlevsen is today celebrated as one of the most important and unique voices in twentieth-century Danish literature, and The Copenhagen Trilogy (1969?71) is her acknowledged masterpiece. Childhood tells the story of a misfit child’s single-minded determination to become a poet; Youth describes her early experiences of sex, work, and independence. Dependency picks up the story as the narrator embarks on the first of her four marriages and goes on to describe her horrible descent into drug addiction, enabled by her sinister, gaslighting doctor-husband.

Throughout, the narrator grapples with the tension between her vocation as a writer and her competing roles as daughter, wife, mother, and drug addict, and she writes about female experience and identity in a way that feels very fresh and pertinent to today’s discussions around feminism. Ditlevsen’s trilogy is remarkable for its intensity and its immersive depiction of a world of complex female friendships, family and growing upーin this sense, it’s Copenhagen's answer to Elena Ferrante's Neapolitan Novels. She can also be seen as a spiritual forerunner of confessional writers like Karl Ove Knausgaard, Annie Ernaux, Rachel Cusk and Deborah Levy. Her trilogy is drawn from her own experiences but reads like the most compelling kind of fiction.

Born in a working-class neighborhood in Copenhagen in 1917, Ditlevsen became famous for her poetry while still a teenager, and went on to write novels, stories, and memoirs. Having been dismissed by the critical establishment in her lifetime as a working-class female writer, she is now being rediscovered and championed as one of Denmark’s most important modern authors.

Raising Them Right The Untold Story of America's Ultraconservative Youth Movement and Its Plot for Power【電子書籍】[ Kyle Spencer ]

|

A riveting behind-the-scenes account of the new stars of the far rightーCharlie Kirk, Candace Owens, Cliff Maloneyーand how they’ve partnered with billionaire donors, idealogues, and political insiders to build the most powerful youth movement the American right has ever seen

In the wake of the Obama presidency, a group of young charismatic conservatives catapulted onto the American political and cultural scenes, eager to thwart nationwide pushes for greater equity and inclusion. They dreamed of a cultural revolutionーonline and offーthat would offer a forceful alternative to the progressive politics that were dominating American college campuses.

In Raising Them Right, a gripping, character-driven read and investigative tour de force, Kyle Spencer chronicles the people and organizations working to lure millions of unsuspecting young American voters into the far-right foldーrevealing their highly successful efforts to harness social media in alarming ways and capitalize on the democratization of celebrity culture.

These power-hungry new faces may look and sound like antiestablishment renegades, but they are actually part of a tightly organized and heavily funded ultraconservative initiative to transform American youth culture and popularize fringe ideas. There is Charlie Kirk, the swashbuckling Trump insider and founder of the right-wing youth activist group Turning Point USA, who dreams of taking back the country’s soul from weak-kneed liberals and becoming a national powerbroker in his own right. There is the acid-tongued Candace Owens, a Black ultraconservative talk-show host and Fox News regular who is seeking to bring Black America to the GOP and her own celebritydom into the national forefront. And then there is the young, rough-and-tumble libertarian Cliff Maloney, who built the Koch-affiliated organization Young Americans for Liberty into a political force to be reckoned with, while solidifying his own power and pull inside conservative circles.

Chock-full of original reporting and unprecedented access, Raising Them Right is a striking prism through which to view the extraordinary shifts that have taken place in the American political sphere over the last decade. It establishes Kyle Spencer as the premier authority on a new generation of young conservative communicators who are merging politics and pop culture, social media and social lives, to bring cruel economic philosophies, skeletal government, and dangerous antidemocratic ideals into the mainstream. Theirs is a crusade that is just beginning.

Imagining the World from Behind the Iron Curtain Youth and the Global Sixties in Poland【電子書籍】[ Malgorzata Fidelis ]
|

The Global Sixties are well known as a period of non-conformist lifestyles, experimentation with consumer products and technology, counterculture, and leftist politics. While the period has been well studied in the West and increasingly researched for the Global South, young people in the "Second World" too were active participants in these movements. The Iron Curtain was hardly a barrier against outside influences, and young people from students and hippies to mainstream youth in miniskirts and blue jeans saw themselves as part of the global community of like-minded people as well as citizens of Eastern Bloc countries. Drawing on Polish youth magazines, rural people's diaries, sex education manuals, and personal testimonies, Malgorzata Fidelis follows jazz lovers, university students, hippies, and young rural rebels. Fidelis colorfully narrates their everyday engagement with a dynamically changing world, from popular media and consumption to counterculture and protest movements. She delineates their anti-authoritarian solidarities and competing visions of transnationalism, with the West as well as the ruling communist regime. Even as youth demonstrations were violently suppressed, Fidelis shows, youth culture was not. By the early 1970s, the state incorporated elements of Sixties culture into their official vision of socialist modernity. From the perspective of youth, Malgorzata Fidelis argues, the post-1989 transition in Poland from communism to liberal democracy, often dubbed as "the return to Europe," was less of a breakthrough and more of a continuation of trends in which they participated. Indeed, they had already created new modes of self-expression and cultural spaces in which ideas of alternative social and political organization became imaginable.

The Subjectivity Of Participation Articulating Social Work Practice with Youth in Copenhagen【電子書籍】[ M. Nissen ]
|

What is a 'we' a collective and how can we use such communal self-knowledge to help people? This book is about collectivity, participation, and subjectivity and about the social theories that may help us understand these matters. It also seeks to learn from the innovative practices and ideas of a community of social/youth workers in Copenhagen between 1987 and 2003, who developed a pedagogy through creating collectives and mobilizing young people as participants. The theoretical and practical traditions are combined in a unique methodology viewing research as a contentious modeling of prototypical practices. Through this dialogue, it develops an original trans-disciplinary critical theory and practice of collective subjectivity for which the ongoing construction and overcoming of common sense, or ideology, is central. It also points to ways of relating discourse with agency, and fertilizing insights from interactionism and ideology theories in a cultural-historical framework.
