The Cult of We WeWork, Adam Neumann, and the Great Startup Delusion【電子書籍】[ Eliot Brown ]

WALL STREET JOURNAL BESTSELLER ? A FINANCIAL TIMES, FORTUNE, AND NPR BEST BOOK OF THE YEAR ? “The riveting, definitive account of WeWork, one of the wildest business stories of our time.”ーMatt Levine, Money Stuff columnist, Bloomberg Opinion

The definitive story of the rise and fall of WeWork (also depicted in the upcoming Apple TV+ series WeCrashed, starring Jared Leto and Anne Hathaway), by the real-life journalists whose Wall Street Journal reporting rocked the company and exposed a financial system drunk on the elixir of Silicon Valley innovation.

LONGLISTED FOR THE FINANCIAL TIMES AND MCKINSEY BUSINESS BOOK OF THE YEAR AWARD

WeWork would be worth $10 trillion, more than any other company in the world. It wasn’t just an office space provider. It was a tech companyーan AI startup, even. Its WeGrow schools and WeLive residences would revolutionize education and housing. One day, mused founder Adam Neumann, a Middle East peace accord would be signed in a WeWork. The company might help colonize Mars. And Neumann would become the world’s first trillionaire.

This was the vision of Neumann and his primary cheerleader, SoftBank’s Masayoshi Son. In hindsight, their ambition for the company, whose primary business was subletting desks in slickly designed offices, seems like madness. Why did so many intelligent peopleーfrom venture capitalists to Wall Street eliteーfall for the hype? And how did WeWork go so wrong?

In little more than a decade, Neumann transformed himself from a struggling baby clothes salesman into the charismatic, hard-partying CEO of a company worth $47 billionーon paper. With his long hair and feel-good mantras, the six-foot-five Israeli transplant looked the part of a messianic truth teller. Investors swooned, and billions poured in.

Neumann dined with the CEOs of JPMorgan and Goldman Sachs, entertaining a parade of power brokers desperate to get a slice of what he was selling: the country’s most valuable startup, a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity and a generation-defining moment.

Soon, however, WeWork was burning through cash faster than Neumann could bring it in. From his private jet, sometimes clouded with marijuana smoke, he scoured the globe for more capital. Then, as WeWork readied a Hail Mary IPO, it all fell apart. Nearly $40 billion of value vaporized in one of corporate America’s most spectacular meltdowns.

Peppered with eye-popping, never-before-reported details, The Cult of We is the gripping story of careless and often absurd peopleーand the financial system they have made.

A masterful tale of a small town in the English midlands, and the hopes, regrets, and unrealized dreams of those who make it their home.
In Middlemarch, George Eliot created a landmark of English literature as she incisively portrayed the drama and folly found in even the most simple and bucolic of precincts.

Intertwined are the lives and stories of unforgettable characters such as Dorothea Brooke, whose desire for intellectual fulfillment leads her to marry the Reverend Edward Casaubon, who coldly refuses to let her follow her ambitions; Tertius Lydgate, a young doctor whose wife, Rosamond, sees him as a stepping stone to a greater place in society; Mr. Bulstrode, the wealthy town financier whose past corruptions return to plague him; and a menagerie of players large and small who find themselves both driven by their own motivations and held in stagnation by the will of others.

As complex in theme as it is heart-wrenching and engaging, Middlemarch stands as a true classic of Victorian-era storytelling.

This ebook has been professionally proofread to ensure accuracy and readability on all devices.

In an earlier time, Shan Tao Yun was an Inspector stationed in Beijing. But he lost his position, his family and his freedom when he ran afoul of a powerful figure high in the Chinese government. Released unofficially from the work camp to which he'd been sentenced, Shan has been living in remote mountains of Tibet with a group of outlawed Buddhist monks. Without status, official identity, or the freedom to return to his former home in Beijing, Shan finds himself in the midst of a baffling series of events. During a ceremony meant to rededicate an ancient and long destroyed monastery, Shan stumbles across evidence of a recent murder in the ruins. Now Shan is being torn between some officials who want his help to search the ruins while others want him to disappear back into the mountains - with one group holding out the tantalizing prospect of once again seeing the son from whom Shan has been separated for many years.

In a baffling situation where nothing is what it appears to be, where the FBI, high ranking Beijing officials, the long hidden monks, and the almost forgotten history of the region all pull him in different directions, Shan finds his devotion to the truth sorely tested. Traveling from Tibet to Beijing to the U.S., he must find the links between murder on two continents, a high profile art theft, and an enigmatic, long-missing figure from history ...in Eliot Pattison's Beautiful Ghosts.

George Eliot's Life, as Related in Her Letters and Journals is a specific kind of autobiography of English author Mary Ann Evans, better known as George Eliot. This book is based on her correspondence and journals, edited by her husband John Walter Cross. His goal in assembling this work was to make known the woman, as well as the author, through the presentation of her daily life and to show the development of her intellect and character. Eliot was married to Cross only for six months before she died, leaving him with the task to present her life to the public. By arranging all the letters and journals so as to form one connected whole, keeping the order of their dates, the editor and the husband managed to combine a narrative of day-to-day life of this prominent literary figure.

The novel follows four characters' rural lives in the fictional community of Hayslopeーa rural, pastoral, and close-knit community in 1799. The novel revolves around a love "rectangle" among the beautiful but self-absorbed Hetty Sorrel; Captain Arthur Donnithorne, the young squire who seduces her; Adam Bede, her unacknowledged suitor; and Dinah Morris, Hetty's cousin, a fervent, virtuous and beautiful Methodist lay preacher. Adam, a local carpenter much admired for his integrity and intelligence, is in love with Hetty. She is attracted to Arthur, the local squire's charming grandson and heir, and falls in love with him. When Adam interrupts a tryst between them, Adam and Arthur fight. Arthur agrees to give up Hetty and leaves Hayslope to return to his militia. After he leaves, Hetty agrees to marry Adam but shortly before their marriage, discovers that she is pregnant. In desperation, she leaves in search of Arthur, unwilling to return to the village on account of the shame and ostracism she would have to endure.

The Essays of "George Eliot" Complete【電子書籍】[ George Eliot ]

In "The Essays of 'George Eliot,'" the esteemed author weaves together a rich tapestry of philosophical inquiry, social critique, and personal reflection. Written with Eliot's characteristic blend of eloquence and keen observation, these essays delve into the complexities of human experience, ethics, and the moral implications of society in the Victorian era. The literary style is marked by its lyrical prose, formidable intellect, and reflective depth, making it not only a source of insight but also a significant contribution to the discourse of literary and philosophical thought in the 19th century. George Eliot, the pen name of Mary Ann Evans, was a pioneering figure in English literature. Her broader life experiences'??including her unconventional approach to love, relationships, and gender roles'??shaped her writings profoundly. Her keen interest in psychology and sociology was reflected in her immersion in contemporary philosophical thought, particularly the works of Spinoza and Feuerbach, allowing her to explore themes of individualism, morality, and the societal constructs that govern human behavior. This collection is highly recommended for readers seeking to explore the intersection of literature and philosophy. It serves as an invaluable resource for understanding the moral intricacies of Eliot's characters and themes in her fiction while providing timeless reflections on the human condition that resonate even today.
