Who Was Galileo?【電子書籍】[ Patricia Brennan Demuth ]

|

Like Michelangelo, Galileo is another Renaissance great known just by his first name--a name that is synonymous with scientific achievement. Born in Pisa, Italy, in the sixteenth century, Galileo contributed to the era's great rebirth of knowledge. He invented a telescope to observe the heavens. From there, not even the sky was the limit! He turned long-held notions about the universe topsy turvy with his support of a sun-centric solar system. Patricia Brennan Demuth offers a sympathetic portrait of a brilliant man who lived in a time when speaking scientific truth to those in power was still a dangerous proposition.

Galileo's Error Foundations for a New Science of Consciousness【電子書籍】[ Philip Goff ]
|

From a leading philosopher of the mind comes this lucid, provocative argument that offers a radically new picture of human consciousnessーpanpsychism.

Understanding how brains produce consciousness is one of the great scientific challenges of our age. Some philosophers argue that consciousness is something "extra," beyond the physical workings of the brain. Others think that if we persist in our standard scientific methods, our questions about consciousness will eventually be answered. And some even suggest that the mystery is so deep, it will never be solved. Decades have been spent trying to explain consciousness from within our current scientific paradigm, but little progress has been made.

Now, Philip Goff offers an exciting alternative that could pave the way forward. Rooted in an analysis of the philosophical underpinnings of modern science and based on the early twentieth-century work of Arthur Eddington and Bertrand Russell, Goff makes the case for panpsychism, a theory which posits that consciousness is not confined to biological entities but is a fundamental feature of all physical matterーfrom subatomic particles to the human brain. In Galileo's Error, he has provided the first step on a new path to the final theory of human consciousness.

Galileo Galilei and the Roman Curia From Authentic Sources【電子書籍】[ Karl von Gebler ]
|

In "Galileo Galilei and the Roman Curia," Karl von Gebler meticulously examines the fraught relationship between the pioneering astronomer Galileo Galilei and the Roman Catholic Church during the early 17th century. Utilizing a rich historical narrative interwoven with philosophical inquiry, Gebler's prose reflects a commitment to detail and clarity, illustrating the tension between scientific innovation and religious dogma. The book offers an insightful perspective on the political and theological climate of the time, highlighting how the interplay between Galileo's groundbreaking discoveries and the Roman Curia's authoritative stance on cosmology reflects larger conflicts about epistemology and faith; a striking exploration of the Enlightenment's dawn amid ecclesiastical entrenchment. Born in 1840 in a landscape steeped in intellectual ferment, Karl von Gebler was a historian and philosopher with a fervent dedication to elucidating the complexities of human thought. His academic background in philosophy and natural sciences undoubtedly shaped his approach to this work, as he sought to contextualize Galileo's plight within the larger thematic framework of science and religion, power and dissent, illuminating the broader implications of Galileo's trial for subsequent generations. Gebler's analysis sheds light not only on Galileo's individual challenges but also on the enduring struggle between faith and reason. This compelling narrative is essential reading for historians, scientists, and anyone interested in the intersection of knowledge systems, making it a vital addition to both scholarly discourse and the bookshelf of any intellectually curious reader.

In "Dialogues Concerning Two New Sciences," Galileo Galilei presents a groundbreaking exploration of kinematics and the strength of materials, framed as a dialogue between three characters: Salviati, Sagredo, and Simplicio. The text is characterized by its accessible prose and rigorous logical argumentation, reflecting the Renaissance's burgeoning emphasis on empirical observation and mathematical reasoning. Through this engaging narrative structure, Galileo adeptly contrasts the findings of modern science against the Aristotelian views, which dominated the scholastic tradition of the time, thereby laying the foundation for the scientific revolution. Galileo, often regarded as the father of modern science, was profoundly shaped by his experiences in a tumultuous era marked by the intersection of faith and science. His innovations in the scientific method and commitment to observation inspired a new approach to understanding the natural world, exemplified in this work. His background in mathematics and physics, as well as his prior conflicts with the Church, further fueled his determination to challenge traditional doctrines, positioning him as a vital figure in the pursuit of knowledge. "Dialogues Concerning Two New Sciences" is an essential read for those interested in the evolution of scientific thought and the conflict between emerging empirical evidence and established authority. Galileo and the Equations of Motion【電子書籍】[ Dino Boccaletti ]
|

This book is intended as a historical and critical study on the origin of the equations of motion as established in Newton's Principia. The central question that it aims to answer is whether it is indeed correct to ascribe to Galileo the inertia principle and the law of falling bodies. In order to accomplish this task, the study begins by considering theories on the motion of bodies from classical antiquity, and especially those of Aristotle. The theories developed during the Middle Ages and the Renaissance are then reviewed, with careful analysis of the contributions of, for example, the Merton and Parisian Schools and Galileo’s immediate predecessors, Tartaglia and Benedetti. Finally, Galileo’s work is examined in detail, starting from the early writings. Excerpts from individual works are presented, to allow the texts to speak for themselves, and then commented upon. The book provides historical evidence both for Galileo's dependence on his forerunners and for the major breakthroughs that he achieved. It will satisfy the curiosity of all who wish to know when and why certain laws have been credited to Galileo.

Galileo Galilei.

The Sidereal Messenger of Galileo Galilei【電子書籍】[ Galileo Galilei and Johannes Kepler ]

"In this Discussion Kepler gives reasons for accepting Galileo’s observationsーalthough he was not able to verify them from want of a telescopeーand entirely supports Galileo’s views and conclusions, adducing his own previous speculations, or pointing out, as in the case of Galileo’s idea of earth-light on the moon, the previous conception of[ix] the same explanation of the phenomenon. He rejects, however, Galileo’s explanation of the copper colour of the moon in eclipses. Kepler ends by expressing unbounded enthusiasm at the discovery of Jupiter’s satellites, and the argument it furnishes in support of the Copernican theory." -Introduction

Invisible Helix A Detective Galileo Novel【電子書籍】[ Keigo Higashino ]

Detective Galileo, Keigo Higashino’s best loved character from The Devotion of Suspect X, returns in a case where hidden history, and an impossible crime, are linked by nearly invisible threads in surprising ways.

The body of a young man is found floating in Tokyo Bay. But his death was no accidentーRyota Uetsuji was shot. He'd been reported missing the week before by his live-in girlfriend Sonoka Shimauchi, but when detectives from the Homicide Squad go to interview her, she is nowhere to be found. She's taken time off from work, clothes and effects are missing from the apartment she shared. And when the detectives learn that she was the victim of domestic abuse, they presume that she was the killer. But her alibi is airtightーshe was hours away in Kyoto when Ryota disappeared, forcing Detectives Kusanagi and Utsumi to restart their investigation.

But if Sonoko didn't kill her abusive lover, then who did? A thin thread of association leads them to their old consultant, brilliant physicist Manabu Yukawa, known in the department as "Detective Galileo." With Sonoko still missing, the detectives investigate other threads of associationーan eccentric artist, who was Sonoko's mother figure after her own single mother passed; and an older woman who is the owner of a hostess club. And how is Sonoko continuing to stay one step ahead of the police searching for her? It's up to Galileo to find the nearly hidden threads of history and coincidence that connect the people around the bloody murder- which, surprisingly, connect to his own traumatic pastーto unravel not merely the facts of the crime but the helix that ties them all together.
