Just as seasons turn with patience, we too are invited to move in cycles of rest and renewal.

Readers will discover:

How light, water, and breath form the common language of creation

What clouds, stars, and landscapes reveal about inner alignment

Simple practices for reconnecting with awe and presence

Stories and reflections that reveal how closely human life is interwoven with the natural world

Whether you are seeking peace in chaotic times, a deeper spiritual connection, or simply a way to pause and wonder again, The Language of Living Things will guide you to look up, look around, and look within. Immi's Jewish Self Defense Birth of Krav Maga【電子書籍】[ Stephen Klein ]

This is a historical novel based on the real events between the years 1936 and 1940, a period of the rise of fascist populist anti-Semitic party in Bratislava, Slovakia, which serves as the background for an imaginary eye-witness account of the heroism of Immi Litchtenfeld and his friends and associates. It was during this dark period that Immi developed a system of self-defense that is widely practiced throughout the world today, known as "Krav Maga." Faced by angry anti-Semitic mob attacks on the Jewish Quarter of the city, Immi had to develop a system of self-defense for people who were outnumbered and without experience in physical confrontations. Immi had won national acclaim in boxing, wrestling, and gymnastics, but after he witnessed the violence and the constant threat to the Jewish community, he decided to turn his entire orientation to self-defense and to promote it as a viable answer to the fascist violence. Using his father's gym as a base for training, Immi's set out to convince his trainees that they could overcome an adversary that would be physically superior both in numbers and in strength. The beauty of his system was its basic simplicity, which made long periods of complicated training unnecessary. Basically, the idea was to learn how to block an attack and then to strike at vital areas of the body. The attacker became the victim. When survival was at stake, all rules of sportsmanship had to be thrown to the wayside. However, this book is much more than a group's struggle against fascism. It is the day to day life of Immi and his friends who continued to live, laugh, and love, despite the continuous tension they were under.

No Island Is an Island Perspectives on Immigration to Japan【電子書籍】[ Eric Han ]

Despite Japan's long-held reputation as an ethnically homogeneous country largely closed to foreigners, the number of immigrants in Japan has been increasing, partially as a direct result of government policies to address labor shortages associated with Japan's aging and declining population. What have these changes meant for Japan as a nation, as well as for foreign communities living in Japan? With contributions from a diverse group of thirteen scholars representing five academic disciplines, No Island Is an Island puts recent changes to the nature of immigration to Japan as well as the foreign population of Japan into social, political, historical, cultural, and religious context.

The book addresses four questions related to the changing situation of immigration and immigrants to and in Japan: First, what can previous immigration regimes tell us about recent efforts to reform immigration in Japan? Second, how do the new visa categories set up to promote the admission of foreign manual laborers into Japan influence existing foreign populations in Japan? Third, how have local and national governments adapted to the increase in immigration to Japan and to the changing nature of Japan’s foreign community? Fourth, what kind of immigration country will Japan become?

The nature of the foreign communities in Japan has undergone several major changes since the end of World War II and the US Occupation, and there continue to be major changes in the composition of those communities. The essays in this volume highlight both the various dimensions of Japan's complicated relationship with its foreign communities as well as several possible directions in which Japan's immigration policy might continue to evolve.

The Strange Death of Europe Immigration, Identity, Islam【電子書籍】[ Mr Douglas Murray ]

THE SUNDAY TIMES NUMBER ONE BESTSELLER
A WATERSTONES POLITICS PAPERBACK OF THE YEAR, 2018

The Strange Death of Europe is a highly personal account of a continent and culture caught in the act of suicide. Declining birth-rates, mass immigration and cultivated self-distrust and self-hatred have come together to make Europeans unable to argue for themselves and incapable of resisting their own comprehensive change as a society.

This book is not only an analysis of demographic and political realities, but also an eyewitness account of a continent in self-destruct mode. It includes reporting from across the entire continent, from the places where migrants land to the places they end up, from the people who appear to welcome them in to the places which cannot accept them.

Told from this first-hand perspective, and backed with impressive research and evidence, the book addresses the disappointing failure of multiculturalism, Angela Merkel's U-turn on migration, the lack of repatriation and the Western fixation on guilt. Murray travels to Berlin, Paris, Scandinavia, Lampedusa and Greece to uncover the malaise at the very heart of the European culture, and to hear the stories of those who have arrived in Europe from far away. In each chapter he also takes a step back to look at the bigger issues which lie behind a continent's death-wish, answering the question of why anyone, let alone an entire civilisation, would do this to themselves?

He ends with two visions of Europe ? one hopeful, one pessimistic ? which paint a picture of Europe in crisis and offer a choice as to what, if anything, we can do next.

NAMED A BEST BOOK OF THE YEAR BY NPR ? A DUA LIPA BOOK CLUB PICK

“Imagine Call Me By Your Name set in Communist Poland and you'll get a sense of Jedrowski's moving debut about a consuming love affair amidst a country being torn apart.” ー O, The Oprah Magazine

“Captivating both for its shimmering surfaces and its terrifying depths. Tomasz Jedrowski is a remarkable writer.” ー Justin Torres, bestselling author of We the Animals

Set in early 1980s Poland against the violent decline of Communism, a tender and passionate story of first love between two young men who eventually find themselves on opposite sides of the political divideーa stunningly poetic and heartrending literary debut for fans of Andr? Aciman, Garth Greenwell, and Alan Hollinghurst.

When university student Ludwik meets Janusz at a summer agricultural camp, he is fascinated yet wary of this handsome, carefree stranger. But a chance meeting by the river soon becomes an intense, exhilarating, and all-consuming affair. After their camp duties are fulfilled, the pair spend a dreamlike few weeks in the countryside, bonding over an illicit copy of James Baldwin’s Giovanni’s Room. Inhabiting a beautiful, natural world removed from society and its constraints, Ludwik and Janusz fall deeply in love. But in their repressive Communist and Catholic society, the passion they share is utterly unthinkable.

Once they return to Warsaw, the charismatic Janusz quickly rises in the political ranks of the party and is rewarded with a highly coveted government position. Ludwik is drawn toward impulsive acts of protest, unable to ignore rising food prices and the stark economic disparity around them. Their secret love and personal and political differences slowly begin to tear them apart as both men struggle to survive in a regime on the brink of collapse.

Shifting from the intoxication of first love to the quiet melancholy of growing up and growing apart, Swimming in the Dark is a potent blend of romance, postwar politics, intrigue, and history. Lyrical and sensual, immersive and intense, Tomasz Jedrowski’s indelible and thought-provoking literary debut explores freedom and love in all its incarnations.

The New Politics of Immigration and the End of Settler Societies【電子書籍】[ Catherine Dauvergne ]

Over the past decade, a global convergence in migration policies has emerged, and with it a new, mean-spirited politics of immigration. It is now evident that the idea of a settler society, previously an important landmark in understanding migration, is a thing of the past. What are the consequences of this shift for how we imagine immigration? And for how we regulate it? This book analyzes the dramatic shift away from the settler society paradigm in light of the crisis of asylum, the fear of Islamic fundamentalism, and the demise of multiculturalism. What emerges is a radically original take on the new global politics of immigration that can explain policy paralysis in the face of rising death tolls, failing human rights arguments, and persistent state desires to treat migration as an economic calculus.

Do States Have the Right to Exclude Immigrants?【電子書籍】[ Christopher Bertram ]

States claim the right to choose who can come to their country. They put up barriers and expose migrants to deadly journeys. Those who survive are labelled ‘illegal’ and find themselves vulnerable and unrepresented. The international state system advantages the lucky few born in rich countries and locks others into poor and often repressive ones.

In this book, Christopher Bertram skilfully weaves a lucid exposition of the debates in political philosophy with original insights to argue that migration controls must be justifiable to everyone, including would-be and actual immigrants. Until justice prevails, states have no credible right to exclude and no-one is obliged to obey their immigration rules.

Bertram’s analysis powerfully cuts through the fog of political rhetoric that obscures this controversial topic. It will be essential reading for anyone interested in the politics and ethics of migration.

Raising Global Families Parenting, Immigration, and Class in Taiwan and the US【電子書籍】[ Pei-Chia Lan ]

Public discourse on Asian parenting tends to fixate on ethnic culture as a static value set, disguising the fluidity and diversity of Chinese parenting. Such stereotypes also fail to account for the challenges of raising children in a rapidly modernizing world, full of globalizing values. In Raising Global Families, Pei-Chia Lan examines how ethnic Chinese parents in Taiwan and the United States negotiate cultural differences and class inequality to raise children in the contexts of globalization and immigration. She draws on a uniquely comparative, multisited research model with four groups of parents: middle-class and working-class parents in Taiwan, and middle-class and working-class Chinese immigrants in the Boston area. Despite sharing a similar ethnic cultural background, these parents develop class-specific, context-sensitive strategies for arranging their children's education, care, and discipline, and for coping with uncertainties provoked by their changing surroundings. Lan's cross-Pacific comparison demonstrates that class inequality permeates the fabric of family life, even as it takes shape in different ways across national contexts.

Economics in America An Immigrant Economist Explores the Land of Inequality【電子書籍】[ Angus Deaton ]

From the Nobel Prize?winning economist and New York Times bestselling coauthor of Deaths of Despair and the Future of Capitalism, candid reflections on the economist’s craft

When economist Angus Deaton immigrated to the United States from Britain in the early 1980s, he was awed by America’s strengths and shocked by the extraordinary gaps he witnessed between people. Economics in America explains in clear terms how the field of economics addresses the most pressing issues of our timeーfrom poverty, retirement, and the minimum wage to the ravages of the nation’s uniquely disastrous health care systemーand narrates Deaton’s account of his experiences as a naturalized US citizen and academic economist.

Deaton is witty and pulls no punches. In this incisive, candid, and funny book, he describes the everyday lives of working economists, recounting the triumphs as well as the disasters, and tells the inside story of the Nobel Prize in economics and the journey that led him to Stockholm to receive one. He discusses the ongoing tensions between economics and politicsーand the extent to which economics has any content beyond the political prejudices of economistsーand reflects on whether economists bear at least some responsibility for the growing despair and rising populism in America.

Blending rare personal insights with illuminating perspectives on the social challenges that confront us today, Deaton offers a disarmingly frank critique of his own profession while shining a light on his adopted country’s policy accomplishments and failures.

Native Bias Overcoming Discrimination against Immigrants【電子書籍】[ Donghyun Danny Choi ]

What drives anti-immigrant bias**ー**and how it can be mitigated

In the aftermath of the refugee crisis caused by conflicts in the Middle East and an increase in migration to Europe, European nations have witnessed a surge in discrimination targeted at immigrant minorities. To quell these conflicts, some governments have resorted to the adoption of coercive assimilation policies aimed at erasing differences between natives and immigrants. Are these policies the best method for reducing hostilities? Native Bias challenges the premise of such regulations by making the case for a civic integration model, based on shared social ideas defining the concept and practice of citizenship.

Drawing from original surveys, survey experiments, and novel field experiments, Donghyun Danny Choi, Mathias Poertner, and Nicholas Sambanis show that although prejudice against immigrants is often driven by differences in traits such as appearance and religious practice, the suppression of such differences does not constitute the only path to integration. Instead, the authors demonstrate that similarities in ideas and value systems can serve as the foundation for a common identity*,* based on a shared concept of citizenship, overcoming the perceived social distance between natives and immigrants.

Addressing one of the most pressing challenges of our time, Native Bias offers an original framework for understanding anti-immigrant discrimination and the processes through which it can be overcome.

Whiteshift Populism, Immigration and the Future of White Majorities【電子書籍】[ Eric Kaufmann ]

THE TIMES, SUNDAY TIMES, FINANCIAL TIMES and EVENING STANDARD BOOKS OF THE YEAR 2018

Whiteshift tells the most important political story of the 21st century: how demographic change is transforming Western politics and how to think about the future of white majorities

'Powerful and rigorously researched. . . this is a book that speaks to the most urgent and difficult issues of our time' - John Gray, author of Seven Types of Atheism

This is the century of whiteshift. As Western societies are becoming increasingly mixed-race, demographic change is transforming politics. Over half of American babies are non-white, and by the end of the century, minorities and those of mixed race are projected to form the majority in the UK and other countries. The early stages of this transformation have led to a populist disruption, tearing a path through the usual politics of left and right. One of the most crucial challenges of our time is to enable conservatives as well as cosmopolitans to view whiteshift as a positive development.

In this groundbreaking book, political scientist Eric Kaufmann examines the evidence to explore ethnic change in Western Europe and North America. Tracing four ways of dealing with this transformation - fight, repress, flight and join - he charts different scenarios and calls for us to move beyond empty talk about national identity. If we want to avoid more radical political divisions, he argues, we have to open up debate about the future of white majorities.

Deeply thought provoking, Whiteshift offers a wealth of data to redefine the way we discuss race in the twenty-first century.

Theory of the Gimmick Aesthetic Judgment and Capitalist Form【電子書籍】[ Sianne Ngai ]

Christian Gauss Award Shortlist
Winner of the ASAP Book Prize
A Literary Hub Book of the Year

“Makes the case that the gimmick…is of tremendous critical value…Lies somewhere between critical theory and Sontag’s best work.”
ーLos Angeles Review of Books

“Ngai exposes capitalism’s tricks in her mind-blowing study of the time- and labor-saving devices we call gimmicks.”
ーNew Statesman

“One of the most creative humanities scholars working today…My god, it’s so good.”
ーLiterary Hub

“Ngai is a keen analyst of overlooked or denigrated categories in art and life…Highly original.”

“It is undeniable that part of what makes Ngai’s analyses of aesthetic categories so appealing…is simply her capacity to speak about them brilliantly.”
ーBookforum

“A page turner.”
ーAmerican Literary History

Deeply objectionable and yet strangely attractive, the gimmick comes in many guises: a musical hook, a financial strategy, a striptease, a novel of ideas. Above all, acclaimed theorist Sianne Ngai argues, the gimmick strikes us both as working too little (a labor-saving trick) and working too hard (a strained effort to get our attention).

When we call something a gimmick, we register misgivings that suggest broader anxieties about value, money, and time, making the gimmick a hallmark of capitalism. With wit and critical precision, Ngai explores the extravagantly impoverished gimmick across a range of examples: the fiction of Thomas Mann, Helen DeWitt, and Henry James; the video art of Stan Douglas; the theoretical writings of Stanley Cavell and Theodor Adorno. Despite its status as cheap and compromised, the gimmick emerges as a surprisingly powerful tool in this formidable contribution to aesthetic theory.
