**Longlisted for the Bread & Roses Award 2025**
**A Guardian book to look out for in 2024**

'An exceptional book: a meditation on family; an interrogation of movement and borders; a reflection on how someone can become separated from their own personal history; and an argument that it is never too late to reconnect with what was lost' SALLY HAYDEN

'A compelling story from a gifted storyteller … In a moment where refugees are often talked about but rarely heard from, her voice breaks through' GARY YOUNGE

A staggering investigation into the costs and consequences of displacement, from a young woman uniquely placed to explore the refugee experience and its aftershocks

In 2015, Aamna Mohdin travelled to Calais to report from the frontlines of the refugee crisis. When she returned to London, and discussed what she had seen with her parents, their response surprised her: didn't she remember being a refugee herself?

Aamna was faced with a reality she had been outrunning for nearly two decades: that her parents had been refugees of the Somali civil war; and that her arrival in the UK aged seven had been preceded by an early childhood in a refugee camp, followed by years of displacement and desperation ? as her family, sometimes together but often separated, fought for a place to call home.

For the first time, Aamna's parents told her their story: of the lives they had built in the newly independent Somalia, and the shattering effects of civil war that followed. From London, she travelled to Somalia, a homecoming to a place that had never been home; before retracing her parents' flight to Kenya, and the Kakuma refugee camp ? the site of a very present refugee crisis, now three decades in the making.

Scattered is a staggering investigation into the costs and consequences of displacement, from a young woman uniquely placed to explore the refugee experience and its aftershocks. A powerful reportage, it is also an epic story of returns and reunions; and a joyful celebration of family and belonging.

'The only way out of the crisis of exclusion sweeping across the Atlantic Ocean is storytelling … In so luminously recounting the story of her family Mohdin achieves an imaginative breakthrough that everyone should read' SAMUEL MOYN, Professor of Law and History at Yale University

Organizing Democracy Reflections on the Rise of Political Organizations in the Nineteenth Century【

This book explores the new types of political organization that emerged in Western Europe and the United States during the nineteenth century, from popular meetings to single-issue organizations and political parties. The development of these has often been used to demonstrate a movement towards democratic representation or political institutionalization. This volume challenges the idea that the development of ‘democracy’ is a story of rise and progress at all. It is rather a story of continuous but never completely satisfying attempts of interpreting the rule of the people. Taking the perspective of nineteenth-century organizers as its point of departure, this study shows that contemporaries hardly distinguished between petitioning, meeting and association. The attraction of organizing was that it promised representation, accountability and popular participation. Only in the twentieth century did parties reliable partners for the state in averting revolution, managing the unpredictable effects of universal suffrage, and reforming society. This collection analyzes them in their earliest stage, as just one of several types of civil society organizations, that did not differ that much from each other. The promise of organization, and the experiments that resulted from it, deeply impacted modern politics.

Written in the latter part of Rousseau's life, the text adopts a lyrical prose style that mirrors his deep emotional engagement with the world around him. Set against the backdrop of the Enlightenment, the work explores themes of solitude, self-discovery, and the relationship between humanity and nature, effectively positioning Rousseau's musings within a broader discourse on individualism and existential inquiry. Rousseau, a pivotal figure in Romantic philosophy, was profoundly influenced by his experiences of alienation and introspection. His tumultuous life'??marked by ambition, exile, and a longing for authenticity'??shapes the reflective tone of the "Reveries." Through these wanderings in both mind and nature, Rousseau seeks to reconcile his fragmented identity with the philosophies of his time, offering a window into his inner turmoil and aspirations toward a more natural, fulfilling existence. For readers seeking to delve into the nexus of emotion and philosophy, Rousseau's reveries provide a compelling exploration of solitude as both a source of pain and enlightenment. This work is essential for anyone looking to understand the evolution of modern thought and the enduring human quest for self-understanding in harmony with nature.

In "On the Prospects of Christianity," George Bernard Shaw embarks on a critical exploration of Christian doctrine through the lens of early 20th-century thought, combining wit and incisive commentary with his signature dramatic flair. This provocative treatise questions the established norms of faith and morality, offering a fresh perspective on the societal implications of Christianity. Written during a time when traditional beliefs were increasingly challenged by modernity, Shaw's work reflects a literary style that is both polemical and engaging, blending philosophical inquiry with sharp satire in a dialectical form that fosters intellectual debate rather than dogmatic adherence. As an influential playwright and social critic, Shaw's views on religion were deeply rooted in his experiences with the dogmas of his youth and his commitment to exposing the flaws of societal conventions. His background in the Fabian Societyーa socialist organization dedicated to reforming society through gradual change rather than revolutionーimpacted his critique of religious institutions, positioning him as a thinker ahead of his time, intent on addressing the ethical demands of his age. "On the Prospects of Christianity" is a must-read for anyone intrigued by the interplay between faith and reason. Shaw's bold assertions and engaging prose invite readers to reflect on the relevance of religious beliefs in contemporary society, making it a vital text for scholars, theologians, and thoughtful laypersons alike.

To Reform the World International Organizations and the Making of Modern States【電子書籍】[ Guy Fiti Sinclair ]

This book explores how international organizations (IOs) have expanded their powers over time without formally amending their founding treaties. IOs intervene in military, financial, economic, political, social, and cultural affairs, and increasingly take on roles not explicitly assigned to them by law. Sinclair contends that this 'mission creep' has allowed IOs to intervene internationally in a way that has allowed them to recast institutions within and interactions among states, societies, and peoples on a broadly Western, liberal model. Adopting a historical and interdisciplinary, socio-legal approach, Sinclair supports this claim through detailed investigations of historical episodes involving three very different organizations: the International Labour Organization in the interwar period; the United Nations in the two decades following the Second World War; and the World Bank from the 1950s through to the 1990s. The book draws on a wide range of original institutional and archival materials, bringing to light little-known aspects of each organization's activities, identifying continuities in the ideas and practices of international governance across the twentieth century, and speaking to a range of pressing theoretical questions in present-day international law and international relations.
