The Vietnam War and its perception were unprecedented in their entire dimension. In general this was due to the climate of social and political change taking place during the 1960's and, more specifically, because of a totally new institution being embedded in this situation- television. During this decade television expanded and became the most important source of information for the people. This medium offered totally new perspectives and dimensions both of war coverage and its perception, which is clearly expressed in the following statement: 'Television brought the brutality of war into the comfort of the living room'.1 The fact that there was no experience with regard to the mechanisms, methods and effects of TV war coverage made a rather experimental reporting possible. Both journalists and politicians were facing a new situation, concerning the intertwining between television, politics and the Vietnam War issue. This paper aims at examining this interrelation by analysing the way the Vietnam War was covered by U.S. television and by looking at the consequences of this coverage. This examination shall provide answers to questions asking for the impact of television on public opinion, U.S. politics and the course of war. The focus is put on television, because studies and surveys have shown that more than half of the American population received their information from television newscasts, which they considered to be more reliable than the press or other media.2 In addition, there is comprehensive material on television reporting as well as profound analyses of it, which is a rather pragmatic reason for concentrating on the role of U.S. TV during the Vietnam War. In this context, Prats considers the immeasurable cultural importance of John Wayne, the cinematic apotheosis of wartime valor and righteousness, whose patriotism was nonetheless deeply compromised by his not having served in World War II. Prats reveals how historical and cultural anxieties emerge in well-known Vietnam movies, in which characters inspired by the heroes of the Second World War are denied the heroic legacy of their fathers. American war movies, in Prats’s analysis, were forever altered by the loss in Vietnam. (Ronald Reagan, 1965) Als Ronald Reagan im Jahre 1965 diese Worte sprach, war ihm noch nicht bewusst, dass der Krieg in Vietnam zum gr??ten Trauma der Vereinigten Staaten von Amerika und darin erst durch die Anschl?ge vom 11. September 2001 abgel?st werden w?rde. Der Krieg in Vietnam hat wie kein anderer die amerikanische Gesellschaft beeinflusst, gespalten und gleichzeitig aber auch vereint. W?hrend die Rechtfertigung und Durchf?hrung des Krieges selbst das ganze Land polarisierte, so ist unser heutiges Bild von Vietnam doch ein recht einheitliches. Dies ist den zahlreichen Produktionen Hollywoods zu verdanken, die sich diesem Krieg widmeten und so zu unserer kollektiven Auffassung davon beitrugen. 'Da? der Vietnamkrieg wie nie zuvor ein Krieg der Bilder war' 2 , wird bei einer genaueren Betrachtung der einzelnen Filme deutlich. Reinecke betont, 'wer indes heute vom Vietnamkrieg redet, spricht insgeheim auch stets von den Inszenierungen, die im Kino entworfen wurden und die in unseren K?pfen die dokumentarischen Bilder des Krieges ?berlappen.' 3 Dass der Zuschauer durch den vermeintlichen Authentizit?tsanspruch vieler Kriegsfilme Fiktion und Realit?t vermischt, steht hierbei nur im Hintergrund. Aus diesem Grund soll auch keine authentizit?tskritische Analyse der Kriegsfilme erfolgen. Vielmehr soll sich die nachfolgende Arbeit der Deutung kollektiver Erinnerungen, die durch den Film geschaffen werden, widmen und dies anhand von Referenzbeispielen dargestellt werden. Denn sogar in heutigen Hollywood Produktionen wird immer wieder auf die einst produzierten und in den K?pfen der Zuschauer fest verankerten Bilder zur?ckgegriffen, um das Bild vom Krieg in Vietnam weiter zu pr?gen. Des Weiteren soll im Zuge dieser Arbeit anhand dessen die Relevanz des Vietnamfilms f?r unsere Geschichtsbilder, und insbesondere f?r die Semiohistorie und den New Historicism dargestellt werden.
