The poetry of Miles Burrows was discovered in 1966 when Tom Maschler, already an editor at Cape, heard him give a public reading in London. Cape published him. After that, Burrows continued his life in many walks, most of them medical. Having studied Greats at Oxford, he determined to become an intellectual and learned to smoke black Russian cigarettes, reviewing occasionally for the New Statesman. He worked as a GP and then as a psychiatrist. He was briefly a trawlerman, then a doctor in the New Guinea Highlands, in the American Hospital for Hmong tribe refugees on the Thai-Laos border, in a Catholic mission Hospital in Eastern Taiwan, in the Middle East and in Suffolk. This Collected Poems is a rich harvest from the decades between 1966 and 2021. The poems are primarily conversational. The poet is keen to get into exclusive places he has no right to be ? clubs, social strata, religions. Much of the adventure, the disrupted narrative, has to do with being out of place. Its long narratives ? work as a trawlerman in Iceland, a traditional funeral in Taiwan ? open on worlds that are made vertiginously real.

By analyzing the Iliad and the Odyssey Josh Coker identifies each classic stages of the Hero's Journey.

What is the Monomyth?

The term "Monomyth" comes from the Greek. It is broken into two root words: 1) mono, meaning "one", and 2) mythos, meaning "story." The connotation being, the "One Story." This term was coined by author James Joyce in his most famous work, Ulysses (the Roman name for Odysseus). However, it wasn't popularized until the late 1940's when a comparative mythologist by the name of Joseph Campbell, published his seminal work, The Hero With A Thousand Faces. In his book, Campbell suggested that there are common aspects that nearly all myths throughout time have shared. These elements combine into a narrative format that can be used as an approach to mythology. Many people associate the "Hero's Journey" as synonymous with The Monomyth.

Both, historical and modern storytellers have used it as an approach to analyze narratives and develop new plots and characters for contemporary audiences. According to Campbell, the Monomyth follows a three-act structure. In the first act, The Separation, a hero is called to adventure and leaves his known world for the unknown world, guided by a mentor. Once the hero crosses the threshold of adventure, they enter the second act, The Initiation. In this section, the hero faces many tests and trials, confronts his inner demons (many times represented as ghosts, monsters, minotaurs, or dragons), then goes on through stages of enlightenment. Once the hero retrieves the boon, he must return it to the normal world from which he came. This third act is called the Return. During this final section of the narrative, the hero must release the power of the boon into society in order to restore it. Many times this last act requires the hero to overcome his major flaw and make a sacrifice. Once restored, the hero and those citizens in the world are free once again to live in it.

The story of Odysseus follows this format very close. Particularly, if we combine the events from the Iliad and the Odyssey we obtain a full picture of Odysseus' journey of kingship.

When you buy this book you'll learn the definition and history of the Monomyth; the three-act structure of the Hero's Journey; and the key plot points of the Iliad and Odyssey. Plus you'll find out what makes Odysseus a hero and how his character arc plays out in relation to overarching themes of the myth. Not to mention, we'll analyze the classic stages of Odysseus journey and their meaning.

PLUS SO MUCH MORE!

This book makes a great companion guide for anyone wishing to learn about the Hero's Journey or Odysseus' adventures.

I'm sure you're going to love this book. The Mind Games of Art and Entertainment And How They Gave Us the Culture of Entertainment - with the Perils of Unseriousness【電子書籍】[ James Sloan Allen ]
|

The Mind Games of Art and Entertainment goes where no book on art or entertainment has gone before. Beginning in some territory familiar to readers curious about its subject, it goes on to show how entertainment has come to dominate American life-and how the historic events of January 6, 2021 could not have occurred as they did without the Culture of Entertainment as their enfolding context.

Along the way, the book explores such topics as what makes something a work of art or entertainment; how art and entertainment affect us, to both good and bad ends; how entertainment ascended to dominate our culture through democracy, commerce, and technology; and how the Culture of Entertainment breeds a pernicious attitude of unseriousness that infects culture at large and perverts politics. We also see important roles played in this story by a wide array of characters, including Plato and Aristotle, Leo Tolstoy and Luigi Pirandello, Auguste Rodin and Andy Warhol, Mark David Chapman and John Hinckley, P. T. Barnum and Walt Disney, the Muppets of Sesame Street and Donald Trump.

Despite the range of its contents, the book focuses on, as the title says, the mind games of art and entertainment. We play those mind games whenever we experience art or entertainment. In that experience, mind games take us out of the real world to where anything can happen-especially in entertainment-and yet nothing that happens there seems to have serious consequences. But that experience and its mind games can nonetheless have effects on us that we take back into the real world for good or ill-such as the very attitude of unseriousness.

In all, The Mind Games of Art and Entertainment is a short book combining theory and history, psychology and politics, social observation and cultural criticism. And it is itself rather entertaining-in the best way.

How Close Reading Made Us The Transnational Legacies of New Criticism【電子書籍】[ Yael Segalovitz ]
|

Shows how the method of close reading traveled from the United States to Brazil and Israel, revealing its profound impact on global modernisms and reframing the lasting significance of New Criticism.

Does reading shape who we are? What happens to the relationship between reading and subject-formation as methods of interpretation travel globally? Yael Segalovitz probes these questions by tracing the transnational journey of the New Critical practice of close reading from the United States to Brazil and Israel in the mid-twentieth century. Challenging the traditional view of New Criticism as a purely aesthetic project, Segalovitz illustrates its underlying pedagogical objective: to cultivate close readers capable of momentarily suspending subjectivity through focused attention. How Close Reading Made Us shows that close reading, as a technique of the self, exerted a far-reaching influence on international modernist literary production, impacting writers such as Clarice Lispector, Yehuda Amichai, William Faulkner, Jo?o Guimar?es Rosa, and A. B. Yehoshua. To appreciate close reading's enduring vitality in literary studies and effectively adapt this method to the present, Segalovitz argues, we must comprehend its many legacies beyond the confines of the Anglophone tradition.

Give Us this Day【電子書籍】[ Mark R. Turner ]

This is a short story about the people of the small, mountain town of Arborview under the pressure of isolation and threats when the metropolis down the hill is attacked by terrorists. Martial law and news reports of bio-terrorist events in the city frighten the population normally used to a quiet, rural atmosphere. Some are inclined to take the law into their own hands instead of leaving it to the local sheriff. Others see an opportunity to cash in on selling supplies. Most are just worried about their friends and families in the city. But when a stranger hikes into town from the back road the threat moves them to take action. The stranger shows up all around town observing their nervous preparations to defend themselves and their property. One couple's daughter, impatient with the situation, leaves town down the same back road from which activists expect an invasion. Then their main source of food, the grocery store, catches fire. The church has called for an all town prayer meeting and the whole town is gathered unsuspecting that the stranger has been seen heading that direction. Will the volunteer militia catch him before he wipes out the population of Arborview in one sweep?
