Pliny the Elder and the Matter of Memory An Encyclopaedic Workshop【電子書籍】[ Anna Anguissola ]

The Roman official and intellectual Pliny the Elder’s Natural History constitutes our primary source on the figural arts in Classical antiquity. Since the Middle Ages, Pliny’s encyclopaedia has enraptured the imaginations of its readers with anecdotes and narratives about the lives and accomplishments of the great artists of the Greek past. This book explores the ways in which materials and artistic processes are constructed in Natural History.

In doing so, this work reflects current developments in the study of Graeco-Roman art, where the scientific analysis of sculptural stones, pigments, and metal alloys, as well as a more detailed understanding of technologies and workshop practices, has imposed radical changes in the methods and theoretical models used to approach ancient artefacts. The argument considers the role of materials in discourses on Nature, as well as their semantics and the language used to account for artistic creation. Discussion of artistic techniques addresses the discovery of resources and technologies, and the discursive implications of creation and viewing. By focusing on particular passages and exemplary case studies, this book explores the ideological, moral, and intellectual preoccupations that guide Pliny’s construction of materialities and human ingenuity in a period characterised by a rapidly-evolving economic landscape. The material and performative aspects of artistic, manual creation provided this early encyclopaedist with the fundaments for constructing and explaining his view of Rome’s imperial mission and, more specifically, of his own strategies as a collector and recorder of ‘all’ the memorable facts of Nature.

This book will be of significant interest to scholars of classical archaeology, Greek and Latin literature, social and economic history, and reception studies.

Being Australian Narratives of national identity【電子書籍】[ Catriona Elder ]

After a century of speculation by writers, filmmakers, travelers and scholars, being Australian' has become a recognisable shorthand for a group of national characteristics. Now, in an era of international terrorism, being seen as un-Australian' has become a potent rhetorical weapon for some, and a badge of honour for others.

Catriona Elder explores the origins, meaning and effects of the many stories we tell about ourselves, and how they have changed over time. She outlines some of the traditional stories and their role in Australian nationalism, and she shows how concepts of egalitarianism, peaceful settlement and sporting prowess have been used to create a national identity.

Elder also investigates the cultural and social perspectives that have been used to critique dominant accounts of Australian identity, including ideas of class, gender, sexuality, ethnicity and race. She shows how these critiques have been, in turn, queried in recent years.

Being Australian is an ideal introduction to studying Australia for anyone interested in understanding Australian society, culture and history.

A clever work: incisive and original. At a time when Australian identities have never been more debated, Elder finds an open way through the closed doors which often restrict cultural representations of Australian-ness.'

Professor Adam Shoemaker, Dean of Arts, ANU

This is a timely and significant new analysis essential reading on issues of identity and our own anxieties about national belonging and what it means to be Australian' in a globalising world.'

Kate Darian-Smith, Professor of Australian Studies and History, University of Melbourne

Randia’s Quiet Theatre Performing Care and Activism with a Romani Elder【電子書籍】[ Magdalena Kazubowski-Houston ]

Throughout Poland, tens of thousands of elderly people live with disabilities in four-storey walk-up apartment buildings. In many cases their children have emigrated; they live with loneliness, a lack of basic amenities, silence, and the absence of care. They are known as “prisoners of the fourth floor.”

In Randia’s Quiet Theatre Magdalena Kazubowski-Houston mixes autofiction, ethnography, and theatrical improvisation to unravel the politics of aging in Poland. At the centre of the book is Randia, a Romani fortune teller, storyteller, and performer confined to her fourth-floor apartment in old age. In interviews, Randia’s identity is fixed: she tells of the hardships she faced as a Romani girl and as a wife, mother, and grandmother whose relationship with her family was shaped by separation, sickness, and death. But in storytelling sessions staged in her home, Randia steps into characters and is freed: her tales move between the past, the present, and the future, across life and death; her characters look after one another and change history. Kazubowski-Houston finds in Randia’s performances a quiet activism through which she envisages alternative lives and articulates an ethics of care among individuals, communities, and spirits.

Interwoven throughout Randia’s Quiet Theatre are Kazubowski-Houston’s own stories about caring for her elderly and disabled mother, making the book a collaborative, reflexive, and complex creative work. It reveals how ethnographers and their interlocutors can stand on more equal ground. Ultimately it is a profound reflection on how the elderly can live with dignity and how we can care for each other.

DADA, Surrealism, and the Cinematic Effect【電子書籍】[ R. Bruce Elder ]

This book deals with the early intellectual reception of the cinema and the manner in which art theorists, philosophers, cultural theorists, and especially artists of the first decades of the twentieth century responded to its advent. While the idea persists that early writers on film were troubled by the cinema’s lowly form, this work proposes that there was another, largely unrecognized, strain in the reception of it. Far from anxious about film’s provenance in popular entertainment, some writers and artists proclaimed that the cinema was the most important art for the moderns, as it exemplified the vibrancy of contemporary life.

This view of the cinema was especially common among those whose commitments were to advanced artistic practices. Their notions about how to recast the art media (or the forms forged from those media’s materials) and the urgency of doing so formed the principal part of the conceptual core of the artistic programs advanced by the vanguard art movements of the first half of the twentieth century. This book, a companion to the author’s previous, Harmony & Dissent, examines the Dada and Surrealist movements as responses to the advent of the cinema.

J?rg Breu the Elder Art, Culture, and Belief in Reformation Augsburg【電子書籍】[ Andrew Morrall ]

This title was first published in 2002: J?¶rg Breu belonged to the generation of German Renaissance artists that included D??rer, Cranach, Gr??newald, Altdorfer, and, in his own city of Augsburg, Hans Burgkmair the Elder. His art registered the early reception of Italian art in Germany and spanned the dramatic years of the Reformation in Augsburg, when the city was riven with social and religious tensions. Uniquely, for a German artist, Breu left a diary chronicling his reaction to the massive social and cultural forces that engulfed him, including his own conversion to the Protestant cause. His story is representative of the condition of many artists during the Reformation years living through this watershed between two cultural eras, which witnessed the transfer of creative energies from religious painting to secular and applied forms of art. In this wide ranging and original study, Andrew Morrall examines the effect of these events on the nature and practice of J?¶rg Breu's art and its reception, not just in his own period, but right up to the present day.

Spanning several generationsーfrom newcomers to Oscar Award-winning veteransーthis volume features a discussion of the movies that shaped the careers of these filmmakers and, in turn, cinema history. Here directors, including Peter Bogdanovich, Kimberly Peirce, Arthur Hiller, and John Waters, explore the film they saw at an especially formative moment, how it influenced their own workーor, in some cases, led them to tell stories through movies themselvesーand the effects it had on their thoughts about cinema. Revealing stories include how after watching Rebel Without a Cause, John Woo started combing his hair like James Dean and even began talking like him; Apocalypse Now inspired Danny Boyle to take risks and make larger-than-life films; and a line in The Wizard of Ozー"Who could ever have thought a good little girl like you could destroy all my beautiful wickedness?"ーhas become almost a personal mantra or prayer for John Waters.

Why the Amish Sing Songs of Solidarity and Identity【電子書籍】[ D. Rose Elder ]

An intimate portrait of the diverse music-making at the center of Amish faith and life.

Singing occurs in nearly every setting of Amish life. It is a sanctioned pleasure that frames all Amish rituals and one that enlivens and sanctifies both routine and special events, from household chores, road trips by buggy, and family prayer to baptisms, youth group gatherings, weddings, and “single girl” sings. But because Amish worship is performed in private homes instead of public churches, few outsiders get the chance to hear Amish people sing. Amish music also remains largely unexplored in the field of ethnomusicology. In Why the Amish Sing, D. Rose Elder introduces readers to the ways that Amish music both reinforces and advances spiritual life, delving deep into the Ausbund, the oldest hymnal in continuous use.

This illuminating ethnomusicological study demonstrates how Amish groups in Wayne and Holmes Counties, Ohioーthe largest concentration of Amish in the worldーsing to praise God and, at the same time, remind themselves of their 450-year history of devotion. Singing instructs Amish children in community ways and unites the group through common participation. As they sing in unison to the weighty words of their ancestors, the Amish confirm their love and support for the community. Their singing delineates their common journeyーa journey that demands separation from the world and yielding to God's will.

By making school visits, attending worship services and youth sings, and visiting private homes, Elder has been given the rare opportunity to listen to Amish singing in its natural social and familial context. She combines one-on-one interviews with detailed observations of how song provides a window into Amish cultural beliefs, values, and norms.

Cranach the Elder: 148 Paintings and Drawings【電子書籍】[ Maria Tsaneva ]

Lucas Cranach the Elder was a German Renaissance painter and graphic artist who shined in portraits and in female nudes. He was the foremost member of the family of artists by that name active in Saxony during the 16th century. From about 1501 to 1504 Cranach lived in Vienna, and his earliest known works date from this period. His work at this time, lyrical and spirited with landscape setting, was influenced by that of Albrecht Durer. In 1505 Cranach became court painter to the electors of Saxony at Wittenberg, a position he held until 1550. For his patrons he painted biblical and mythological scenes with decorative sensual nudes that were new to German painting. Cranach was a friend of Martin Luther, and his art expresses much of the spirit and feeling of the German Reformation. His portraits of Protestant leaders are sober and meticulously drawn. Cranach ran a large workshop and worked with great speed, producing hundreds of works.

Conversation With An Elder God【電子書籍】[ R. Richard ]

A man is near dying and wants only to find a final resting place in a desert area.
Suddenly he finds himself surrounded by strange looking little people. He then passes out.
The man then dwells in a world of swirling colors for a time. The little people care for him, as he sleeps in perhaps a coffin.
At last the little people remove him from the sort of coffin thing that has been his home. His pain is gone and, aside from a little dizziness, he feels good.
The little people then want the man to do repairs to the place where they and he live.
The leader of the little people leads the man to a sort of flat panel that holds a picture. The picture is of the room in which the man finds that they stand. The little fellow activates a switch of some sort and the picture moves and talks. The talk is in a foreign language, a language different from the one used by the little people, at least judging by the sound of it.
The picture in the panel illustrates repairs of the room. The room is part of a larger, saucer shaped structure. The saucer shaped structure is obviously a flying vehicle.
Once shown repair materials and tools, the man begins to repair the damage to the ship following the training film in the flat panel as best he can.
The repair work is physically hard, too hard for the little people. It initially requires much of the mans strength. As the days wear into months, he becomes stronger; much stronger. The little people can't really help with the work. They're not only too small to be of any real use, they're also too dumb.
His saviors are some sort of mentally retarded midgets. Nice guys, mind you. Guys who saved his life. But really dim bulbs.
As time passes, the man discovers that the little people can't eat much of the food in the saucer ship. This tells him that the saucer ship doesn't belong to the little people, leaving the question of ownership a mystery.
As the months wear on, the man begins to see that the little people are in some sort of trouble. They're, of course, ship wrecked somewhere other than their home. How they even got as far as they have is a mystery. They're almost all not only dumb but also very clumsy. There's only one, very young, child among the little people and it's appallingly dumb. The rest of the little people seem to dote on the one child, not so much out of pity but perhaps out of pride. The man doesn’t know exactly what to make of the situation.
The man himself doesn't need much. He spends his nights in a little coffin-based world of swirling colors. The coffin thing is obviously a medical device of some sort.
One night, at least most of the mystery of the little people is solved for the man.
A large being opens his coffin. He lifts the man out of the coffin without any real effort and addresses the man. The large being doesn't speak. Instead there's a voice inside the man's head.
The being lectures the man, explaining a journey that the little people are making. The being also explains that the little people must die.
The being, who calls himself an elder god, doesn't appear to the man as a larger, nobler version of the little people, as one might think. The being appears to the man as a large biped with horns on his head and a long tail ending in an arrow point.

A 'stuccoed town in the Regency manner', a watering place that became the most fashionable resort in England following George III's visit, or a place of Bath-chairs where ex-colonial officers came to die? A vibrant town of festivals and fashionable shops, a Mecca for horse racing, international music, cricket and world-renowned colleges, or a quiet retreat for luxurious gardens and cultural events? Cheltenham has never suffered an identity crisis. It has simply re-invented itself through the ages. How better to portray Cheltenham's unique, evolving personality than through pictures that tell 'thousands of words' juxtaposed with les mots justes culled from some of our most acclaimed writers. From Jane Austen to Ann Yearsley, writers both modern and old, as diverse as George Orwell, Laurie Lee, George Bernard Shaw, C. Day-Lewis, Cobbett, Defoe, Scott, Trollope, Thackeray, Dickens, Byron and Betjeman, have heaped praise on the town or damned it, been spellbound by its beauty or sneered at its laziness and opulence. Famous explorers and composers have written about it as their birthplace, while others have written about it as a place to visit, whether as poets, essayists or even relatives of German philosophers. Love or hate it, they have always remember their experience of Cheltenham.

Elder Governance Insights into Making the Transition【電子書籍】[ Daniel Evans ]

When the leadership of Patterson Park Church looked for a book explaining the process of transitioning from a board-run church to an elder led form of church government, a structure they had come to believe was more in line with Scripture, they found none. God honored their efforts and two of their elders decided a book still needed to be written. Elder Governance: Insights into Making the Transition examines church government from a biblical and historical context and tells the story of Patterson Park's transition. The authors are hopeful that God will use their experience to help others considering such a transition.

Graphic Worlds of Peter Bruegel the Elder【

Renowned for his effervescent and rollicking paintings of Flemish life, Peter Bruegel the Elder also holds a place among the world's finest engraving designers. This collection contains 64 of his engravings plus a woodcut, arranged in two parts. The first depicts the outer world of nature and man, including landscapes, ships and the sea, and memorable portraits of sixteenth-century Flanders citizens, from aristocrats and burghers to villagers and peasants. The second part envisions the inner worlds of imagination, morality, and religion with scenes from the Gospels and Apocrypha.
In addition, the book offers cogent and stimulating commentaries by H. Arthur Klein that provide details of Bruegel's life and influences as well as his techniques. Many of these prints served as models for subsequent Bruegel canvases, and each image is accompanied by an essay that places it within its historical context. A unique survey of the best and most magical work of one of history's greatest printmakers, this volume offers a prized addition to the collections of all connoisseurs, especially those interested in the art of engraving.
