Greek Theatre between Antiquity and Independence A History of Reinvention from the Third Century BC to 1830【電子書籍】[ Walter Puchner ]
|

This first general history of Greek theatre from Hellenistic times to the foundation of the Modern Greek state in 1830 marks a radical departure from traditional methods of historiography. We like to think of history unfolding continuously, in an evolutionary form, but the story of Greek theatre is rather different. After traditional theatre ended in the sixth and seventh centuries, no traditional drama was written or performed on stage throughout the Greek-speaking world for centuries due to the Orthodox Church's hostile attitude toward spectacles. With the reinvention of theatre in Renaissance Italy, however, Greek theatre was revived in Crete under Venetian rule in the late sixteenth century. The following centuries saw the restoration of Greek theatre at various locations, albeit characterized by numerous ruptures and discontinuities in terms of geography, stylistics, thematic approaches and ideologies. These diverse developments were only 'normalized' with the establishment of the Greek nation state.

Erechtheus. A Tragedy A Poetic Exploration of Power and Fate in Greek Tragedy【電子書籍】[ Algernon Charles Swinburne ]
|

Erechtheus. A Tragedy is a compelling exploration of ancient themes, weaving the myth of Erechtheus, the Athenian king, into a rich tapestry of poetic diction and dramatic structure. Swinburne's characteristic use of lyrical intensity and rhythmic innovation shines through, as he delves into profound questions of duty, sacrifice, and the intersection of personal desire with the demands of fate. The work stands as a homage to classical tragedy, drawing inspiration from Greek drama while simultaneously infusing it with Victorian sensibilities, reflecting Swinburne's fascination with the interplay of love, death, and divine retribution. Algernon Charles Swinburne, a prominent figure in the 19th-century literary scene, was known for his radical views on aesthetics and morality, and his fascination with themes of freedom and constraint. Influenced by the classical canon, as well as by his own experiences with political upheaval, Swinburne often grappled with the tensions between individual will and societal expectations. His intimate knowledge of Greek mythology and tragedy culminated in this bold work, which resonates with the emotional weight and ethical dilemmas of his time. Erechtheus is a must-read for enthusiasts of both classical literature and Victorian poetry. Swinburne's masterful command of language combined with the timeless themes of love, loss, and the relentless march of destiny invite readers into a world that transcends its historical context. This tragedy serves not merely as a retelling of an ancient tale but as a profound reflection on the human condition, making it an essential addition to the canon of literary classics.

The Play of Space Spatial Transformation in Greek Tragedy【電子書籍】[ Rush Rehm ]
|

Is "space" a thing, a container, an abstraction, a metaphor, or a social construct? This much is certain: space is part and parcel of the theater, of what it is and how it works. In The Play of Space, noted classicist-director Rush Rehm offers a strikingly original approach to the spatial parameters of Greek tragedy as performed in the open-air theater of Dionysus. Emphasizing the interplay between natural place and fictional setting, between the world visible to the audience and that evoked by individual tragedies, Rehm argues for an ecology of the ancient theater, one that "nests" fifth-century theatrical space within other significant social, political, and religious spaces of Athens.

Drawing on the work of James J. Gibson, Kurt Lewin, and Michel Foucault, Rehm crosses a range of disciplines--classics, theater studies, cognitive psychology, archaeology and architectural history, cultural studies, and performance theory--to analyze the phenomenology of space and its transformations in the plays of Aeschylus, Sophocles, and Euripides. His discussion of Athenian theatrical and spatial practice challenges the contemporary view that space represents a "text" to be read, or constitutes a site of structural dualities (e.g., outside-inside, public-private, nature-culture). Chapters on specific tragedies explore the spatial dynamics of homecoming ("space for returns"); the opposed constraints of exile ("eremetic space" devoid of normal community); the power of bodies in extremis to transform their theatrical environment ("space and the body"); the portrayal of characters on the margin ("space and the other"); and the tragic interactions of space and temporality ("space, time, and memory"). An appendix surveys pre-Socratic thought on space and motion, related ideas of Plato and Aristotle, and, as pertinent, later views on space developed by Newton, Leibniz, Descartes, Kant, and Einstein. Eloquently written and with Greek texts deftly translated, this book yields rich new insights into our oldest surviving drama.

Return Narratives Ethnic Space in Late-Twentieth-Century Greek American and Italian American Literature【電子書籍】[ Theodora D. Patrona ]
|

This book is a comparative study of six Italian American and Greek American literary works written in the three last decades of the 20th century and examined in pairs. Based on the common theme of the authors' return, either metaphorical or literal to the country of origin and its culture, Return Narratives explores the common motifs of mythology, ritual, and storytelling where the third generation writers resort to in their quest for self-definition. With a common historical and cultural background in the old neighboring countries, Greece and Italy, and a similar reception in the new world facilitating a comparative approach, the ethnic writers of the two literatures, clearly envisage ethnic space as a site of resilience and empowerment.

|

The project “Medea’s suite” was written initially as soundtrack to the eponymous work of Jean Anouilh (from ancient tragedy), which was staged by an amateur troupe of University students. I was captivated by the entire play’s plot and mentally I traveled to the ancient, mythical, heroic times. I let myself free to become ecstatic, to imagine, to see the images and hear the sounds and beats of this exciting tragedy. So after an introduction, I imagined DANCE before lovemaking, THE LOVEMAKING, the EXCITEMENT, the COMPLAINT, the relaxation-LULLABI, the mysterious calm of the Night, the colors and sounds of DAWN and THE EPILOGUE. In my mind were the sounds of PERPETUAL GREECE, as I subjectively imagined them. That is why in the same book, on the same disc, I wanted to include my sonata titled '’GREEK SONATA”, as a guide to which I had again the Greek musical tradition. I chose violin and guitar, because their sounds were the most suited for these projects in my imagination.

Hypertheatre Contemporary Radical Adaptation of Greek Tragedy【電子書籍】[ Olga Kekis ]
|

Hypertheatre: Contemporary Radical Adaptation of Greek Tragedy investigates the adaptation of classical drama for the contemporary stage and explores its role as an active, polemical form of theatre which addresses present-day issues.

The book’s premise is that by breaking drama into constituent parts, revising, reinterpreting and rewriting to create a new, culturally and politically relevant construct, the process of adaptation creates a 'hyperplay', newly repurposed for the contemporary world. This process is explored through a diverse collection of postmodern adaptations of Antigone, Medea, and The Trojan Women, analysing their adaptive strategies and the evidence of how these remakings reflect the cultures of which they are a part. Central to this study is the idea that each of these adaptations becomes an entirely new play, redefining its central female figures and invoking reconfigurations of femininity which emphasise individual women’s strengths and female solidarity.

Written for scholars of Theatre, Adaptation, Performance Studies, and Literature, Hypertheatre places the Greek classics firmly within a contemporary feminist discourse.
