Auf dieser wurde der Begriff des Impressionismus gepr?gt, denn das Gem?lde 'Impression. Aufgehende Sonne' von Monet verleidete eine Kritiker die Ausstellung abwertend die 'Ausstellung der Impressionisten' zu nennen. Diese K?nstler legten ihren Schwerpunkt auf die Farben, Formen und das Licht-Schatten-Spiel und weiniger auf den gezeichneten Gegenstand. Dabei machten sie sich die neusten Erkenntnisse der Wahrnehmungspsychologie1 zu nutzen. Die Neuerungen in ihrer Technik bestand darin ihr Gem?lde mit fl?chtigen Pinselstrichen zu zeichnen und damit das Auge anzuregen, das Bild wieder zusammen zusetzen. Durch diese Technik war auch ein ausgepr?gtes Licht-Schatten-Spiel m?glich, dass kurzlebige Lichteffekte entstehen lie?. Eine Weiterentwicklung des Impressionismus ist der Pointelismus, der zwischen 1880 bis 1910 in Mode kam. Sein Begr?nder war Georges Seurat. Der Pointelismus baut auf den erweiterten naturwissenschaftlichen Erkenntnissen auf, dass die menschliche Netzhaut das Bild in kleinste Rasterpunkte aufteilt und es erst wieder im Geiste zusammen setzt. Seine Technik des Impressionismus geht soweit, dass anstelle farblicher Pinsel striche nur noch Punkte auf die Leinwand aufgetragen wurden. Es fand auch kein vermischen der Farben mehr statt, weder auf die Leinwand noch vor dem Auftrag. Durch diese Technik muss das Auge des Betrachters erst das Gem?lde wieder im Geiste verbinden. Paul C?zanne reduziert in 'Mont Sainte- Victoire' die Natur auf einzelne geometrische Fl?chen und Paul Gauguin, durch seine Tahiti-Reisen inspiriert, setzt leuchtende Farben nebeneinander. Die Maler stellen jetzt nicht mehr die Realit?t dar, sondern die Bilder in ihrer Seele. Diese Unabh?ngigkeit von Gegenst?nden ist wegbereiten f?r die Kunst in 20. Jahrhundert. Auch Henri Matisse versucht sich in der Gestaltungsart des Pintelismus, welches sich in seinem Werk 'Luxe, calme et volupte' zeigt.
