The Getting of Wisdom【電子書籍】[ Henry Handel Richardson ]

Henry Handel Richardson's novel "The Getting of Wisdom" intricately explores the tumultuous journey of adolescence through the eyes of its protagonist, Laura Tweedle Ramos. Set in the late 19th century, the narrative unfolds within the confines of a strict Australian boarding school, marked by an unflinching real realism that captures the fervor and fragility of youth. Richardson's prose is characterized by its lyrical quality and psychological depth, offering readers a poignant glance into Laura's internal struggles as she seeks self-identity and wisdom amid societal expectations and personal aspirations. Richardson, born Ethel Florence Lindon Richardson in 1870, grew up in a period steeped in the cultural shifts of post-colonial Australia. Her own experiences at a similar educational institution imbue the novel with authenticity, revealing the often harsh realities young women faced during her time. The author's adeptness at depicting complex emotional landscapes reflects her belief in the significance of consciousness and self-discovery, themes that resonate throughout her oeuvre. This seminal work is highly recommended for readers interested in coming-of-age narratives that transcend mere nostalgia. Richardson's keen insights into gender, class, and the quest for personal agency ensure that "The Getting of Wisdom" remains a profound and relevant exploration of the challenges inherent in growing up.

Handel in London The Making of a Genius【電子書籍】[ Jane Glover ]

'How refreshing, to read a book about music written for a music lover and not a musicologist. In clear, lucid, entertaining prose, Jane Glover makes those of us who lack musical literacy better understand and appreciate Handel’s divinity.' - Donna Leon, author of Handel's Bestiary and the Inspector Brunetti mysteries.

Handel in London tells the story of a young German composer who in 1712, followed his princely master to London and would remain there for the rest of his life. That master would become King George II and the composer was George Frideric Handel.

Handel, then still only twenty-seven and largely self-taught, would be at the heart of musical activity in London for the next four decades, composing masterpiece after masterpiece, whether the glorious coronation anthem, Zadok the Priest, operas such as Giulio Cesare, Rinaldo and Alcina or the great oratorios, culminating, of course, in Messiah.

Here, Jane Glover, who has conducted Handel’s work in opera houses and concert halls throughout the world, draws on her profound understanding of music and musicians to tell Handel’s story. It is a story of music-making and musicianship, of practices and practicalities, but also of courts and cabals, of theatrical rivalries and of eighteenth-century society. It is also, of course, the story of some of the most remarkable music ever written, music that has been played and sung, and loved, in this country ? and throughout the world ? for three hundred years.

Ultima Thule A Musical Journey Through Love and Ambition【電子書籍】[ Henry Handel Richardson ]

Henry Handel Richardson's "Ultima Thule" is a compelling exploration of the complexities of identity and belonging, set against the backdrop of early 20th-century Australia and Europe. Imbued with a sense of lyrical nostalgia, the narrative delves into the life of an expatriate family in Europe who grapple with their Australian roots and shifting personal identities. Richardson's prose, marked by its vivid imagery and introspective depth, captures the nuances of human emotions and the timeless struggle for self-understanding. The novel is situated within the modernist literary movement, echoing contemporary themes of dislocation and cultural hybridization while standing as a distinctive voice that underscores Australian literature's evolution. An eminent author and a pivotal figure in Australian literary history, Henry Handel Richardson (pen name of Ethel Margaret Lindesay Richardson) was profoundly influenced by her own experiences of migration and her education in Europe. This personal background enriched her understanding of the expatriate experience and led her to examine the intersection of place and identity, making "Ultima Thule" not just a narrative, but also a psychological and cultural inquiry that resonates deeply with her own life. "Ultima Thule" is recommended for readers eager to engage with a work that intricately weaves themes of nostalgia, cultural identity, and existential reflection. Richardson's rich, evocative writing invites readers to ponder their own connections to place and self, making this novel a significant contribution to both Australian and global literature.

The Getting of Wisdom, by Henry Handel Richardson, tells the story of Laura Rambotham, a 12-year-old girl who is just starting at her boarding school.

The author's family lived in various Victorian towns and from the age of 13 to 17 Richardson attended boarding school at the Presbyterian Ladies' College in Melbourne, Victoria. It's this experience that feeds directly into The Getting of Wisdom.

Laura Tweedle Rambotham, the main character, is the eldest child of a country family. She is a clever and highly imaginative child, given to inventing romantic stories for the entertainment of her younger siblings, and an avid reader.
Studienarbeit aus dem Jahr 2004 im Fachbereich Germanistik - Neuere Deutsche Literatur, Note: 2,0, Technische Universit?t Berlin (Germanistik), Veranstaltung: Textinterpretation: Walter H?llerer und die Gruppe 47, Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: Alexander Kluge, deutscher Schriftsteller und Regisseur, ist am 14. Februar 1932 in Halberstadt geboren.

Through Richardson's lyrical prose and keen psychological insight, the novel captures the complexities of youthful longing, familial loyalty, and the quest for individual identity, manifesting a deep emotional resonance that continues to linger with readers. The deft interweaving of internal monologue with vivid descriptions reflects Richardson's mastery of modernist techniques, marking this work as a significant contribution to Australian literature. Long out of print, at least outside of Australia, its publisher, William Heinemann Ltd claimed on the jacket to the 1965 edition, "This is now recognized as one of the greatest novels in the English language."

It was acclaimed for its rich characterizations and then-startling depiction of mental illness attacking an otherwise respectable person, while his much-younger wife, who does not think herself clever, must become resourceful with a high-level of uncomfortable capability. The book is based, at least in outline, on events in the life of Richardson's parents, Walter Lindesay Richardson and his wife, Mary Bailey, though it should not be considered a biography, as many major and minor changes were made.

The publisher originally balked at publishing the third volume (after the first two had modest sales) without persuasion from Richardson's husband. Only when the third volume appeared was it hailed as a great novel. Henry Handel Richardson, was the nom de plume of Ethel Florence Lindesay Richardson. Richardson was born in East Melbourne, Victoria, Australia into a prosperous family which later fell on hard times, Ethel Florence was the elder daughter of Walter Lindesay Richardson M. D., and his wife Mary (n?e Bailey).

The Fortunes of Richard Mahony was Richardson's famous trilogy about the slow decline of a successful Australian physician and his family due to his character flaws and brain disease. It was highly praised by Sinclair Lewis, among others. Richardson married J. George Robertson, a Scottish student of German literature in 1894. They moved to London in 1903, where Robertson had been appointed to a chair of German at the University of London as a Professor of German Literature.

Handel The Man & His Music【電子書籍】[ Jonathan Keates ]

Jonathan Keates original biography of Handel was hailed as a masterpiece on its publication in 1985. This fully revised and updated new edition - published to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the composers death - charts in detail Handel's life, from his youth in Germany, through his brilliantly successful Italian sojourn, to the opulence and squalor of Georgian London where he made his permanent home.

For over two decades Handel was absorbed in London's heady but precarious operatic world. But even his phenomenal energy and determination could not overcome the public's growing indifference to Italian opera in the 1730s, and he turned finally to oratorio, a genre which he made peculiarly his own and in which he created some of his finest works, such as Saul, Messiah, Belshazzar and Jephtha.

Over the last two decades a complete revolution in Handel's status has taken place. He is now seen both as a titanic figure in music, whose compositions have found a permanent place in the international repertoire, and as one of the world's favourite composers, with snatches of his work accompanying weddings, funerals and television commercials the world over.

Skillfully interwoven with the account of Handel's life are commentaries on all his major works, as well as many less familiar pieces by this most inventive, expressive and captivating of composers. Handel was an extraordinary genius whose career abounded in reversals that would have crushed anyone with less resilience and will power, and Jonathan Keates writes about his life and work with sympathy and scrutiny.
