Lord Liverpool The Life and Political Career of Robert Banks Jenkinson, Second Earl of Liverpool, 1770-1828【電子書籍】[ Norman Gash ]

'He gave his name to the longest, and one of the most important, British administrations of the nineteenth century. Yet the man himself has remained a shadowy figure.' Norman Gash, from the introduction
Prime Minister at the time of the battle of Waterloo, Robert Banks Jenkinson, the 2nd Earl of Liverpool, was in power from 1812 to 1827. But despite his seeing off the threat of Napoleon, and being British premier during the turbulent years of Peterloo, the Six Acts and the campaign for Catholic Emancipation, Lord Liverpool was later dubbed the 'Arch-Mediocrity' by Disraeli, and was generally forgotten, eclipsed by the events of his day. This biography, first published in 1984, brings both the man and his politics out of the shadows.

The Book of Liverpool A City in Short Fiction【電子書籍】[ Ramsey Campbell ]

Featuring:
Beryl Bainbridge, Brian Patten, Clive Barker, Frank Cottrell Boyce, Ramsey Campbell, Paul Farley, Margaret Murphy, Dinesh Allirajah, James Friel, and Tracy Aston.
A baby blown out of an upstairs window by a WWII bomb lives to hear others tell the tale…

A woman embarks on a long-term obsession with a city landmark, abandoning her lover for the Liver…

A bricklayer working on the foundations of a never-built cathedral becomes its evangelist, its full splendour soaring only in his mind…

Bringing together fiction from some of the city’s most celebrated writers, The Book of Liverpool traces the unique contours that decades of social and economic change can impress on a city. Set against key historical moments from the Second World War to the Capital of Culture year, these stories question what ‘belonging’ and ‘home’ mean in the Liverpudlian context, from the regenerated city centre to satellite suburbs, from the sparring cathedrals to the no-go concrete housing estates. Liverpool emerges in these short stories as a city in constant flux: haunted by ghosts, buoyed up by myths, and shifting with an ebb and flow like the Mersey itself.

"A literary gem that will share a niche in my library with M.R. James and E. F. Benson..."
- Metapsychology online Read review.

"Words thrive here, carried on the saline breeze of the Mersey and twisted round agile tongues into sentences as resilient as the sandstone blocks in the Town Hall walls..."
- The Liverpool Daily Post, 11 Jul 08 Read review.

The House on the Hill-Lake District Revisited Liverpool Orphanage 1944-1952【電子書籍】[ Grenda Walton ]

In 1944, World War II was still raging, especially for English children. My father had been left with five children that he could not handle, and then we found ourselves in a strange place, an Orphanage in the Lake District of Great Britain. Many times, our nieces and nephews have asked my sisters and me about our time in the Orphanage, and I have promised them a book for years. I finally felt I could dredge up what I had pushed down for so long. These are stories about our lives, as well as some of the girls, in the home from 1944 to 1952, my memories of events that happened, good and bad, in those eight years. In many ways, that time gave me determination and fortitude to press on regardless, and I hope the remembering, even though a bit painful, helps in your understanding.

Liverpool Early Teens Post WWII Years 1946/7 Book 1【電子書籍】[ Bernard Fredericks ]

No longer a schoolboy but now a youth poised for a fresh start, he sensed significant changes brewing in the aftermath of World War II. With the war concluded, nations, both victors and vanquished, were in a flurry to redirect their economies towards peace. He was caught up in the palpable excitement of a transformation on the horizon. ‘I’m leaving school this Easter,’ he announced to the boys on September Road. Climbing down from the low stone wall, he made his way home, bidding farewell with a wave. He found himself on the brink of joining the ranks of the unemployed. A ship’s engineer, or perhaps an apprentice to one, as his father had hinted? The discussion around what job might suit him never ventured into the realm of Marine Engineering. The topic soon became as extinct as the proverbial dodo ? his initial taste of disappointment. The challenge of finding a position as a young adult had arisen, and his life progressed accordingly. Demonstrating eagerness and a willingness to work was non-negotiable; he was more than ready to spread his wings. Yet, amidst these challenges, his reflective moments found solace in the image of the breathtakingly glamorous Hollywood actress Rita Hayworth. Her latest film had introduced her new visage, now occupying his quieter moments: a comforting vision that offered him a gentle escape.

BERNIE FAZAKERLEY LIVERPOOL MYSTERIES Box Set Collection I【電子書籍】[ Judy Ford ]

Bernadette Fazakerley (“Our Bernie” to her friends) left her home city of Liverpool for Oxford in 1976. There she gained a first Class degree in Mathematics and a fianc?, Stephen. That was the point in her life when things started going wrong. Stephen killed himself by jumping from a high building. Bernie, unable to shake off the suspicion that Stephen had been unable to face life with her, buried herself in her academic work. Soon she obtained a doctorate and a tutorial fellowship at St Luke’s College.

It is only many years later, when her daughter Lucy (the product of her late marriage to a Detective Superintendent in Thames Valley Police) reaches her teens that Bernie thinks of returning to her childhood home and her few remaining relatives. In Mystery over the Mersey, we follow Bernie, Lucy and Bernie’s second husband, Peter, as they make a long-awaited visit to Merseyside. It is not long, however, before the holiday turns into an adventure, when they become witnesses to a murder aboard one of the iconic Mersey Ferries and the remainder of their stay is spent helping the police with their enquiries.

A year later, Bernie’s Aunty Dot summons them to return to Liverpool once more. A death has occurred in the Care Home where she lives and she is worried that the police have got the wrong suspect. In my Liverpool Home records the investigation in which Bernie’s good friend, DCI Jonah Porter, eventually solves the mystery and the real culprit is brought to justice ? but not without plenty of excitement and false trails in the way!

This compilation contains the full text of both stories and, as an added bonus, more than thirty original photographs of Liverpool, not included in the individual e-books. I hope that you enjoy reading these stories and learning more about Liverpool and its people.

Pastor Daniels Ekarte and the African Churches Mission Liverpool 1931-1964【電子書籍】[ Marika Sherwood ]

A young man arrived in Liverpool from Nigeria around 1915, expecting to find the streets paved with gold. The Dingle area of Toxteth he settled in was instead depressed, poor, racist, and to his mind, ungodly. In 1931, he founded the African Churches Mission, in which he not only conducted services but also fed and clothed the poor of the community, and housed seamen and others denied accommodation due to the colour of their skin. He also provided a home for the unwanted children of local white women left behind by their fathers, African American servicemen who returned home when World War II ended. As a radical supporter of pro-independence and anti-racist movements in the African Diaspora, he was regarded as troublesome by the Establishment, and therefore received no state or voluntary support, not even from the Anti-Slavery Society. Nevertheless, he and his mission soldiered on for over thirty years, until the dilapidated building was finally demolished by the Council in 1964. Using British and international sources, historian Marika Sherwood has pieced together this account of the remarkable life and work of Pastor Daniels Ekarte (referred to as the African Saint), retelling an inspiring story of kindness, activism, Black pride and resilience in a city built on the exploitation of his Continent.
