At least that is the way I tell it sometimes when thoughts of the blood, the machetes, the swamp and the fear of Uncle Leonard become too hard to describe.
But that was all before I met Ashley, wonderful Ashley. Not that he would ever call himself wonderful in a million years.
From the acclaimed author of Snow Mountain Passage comes this richly evocative novel that follows a half-Indian, half-Hawai'ian woman and her complex relationship with the last king of Hawai'i.When talk show host Sheridan Brody finds the journals of his great grandmother Nani Keala (aka Nancy Callahan), he uncovers a mythic, unknown tale. Nani, a shy girl from a remote Indian village, met the Hawai'ian king, David Kalakaua, on his grand progress by train across the United States in 1881, eventually returning with him to Honolulu. There, as his young ally and prot?g?e, ever more assured and charming, she played an integral role in his attempt to revive the monarchy and spirit of his people and, eventually, witnessed the mysterious circumstances surrounding his downfall. Deeply engaging through its vivid portrayal of California and Hawai'i at the end of the nineteenth century, Bird of Another Heaven is a masterful portrait of an era long past.

Can one find hope when the only way to become human again means betraying the one you love?

Princess Aderyn has no choice but to marry a prince from the Cariandell Kingdom if she wants to save her own dying kingdom. Happiness has eluded her for too long, and the prospect of marrying fills her with dread. Her only hope is that Prince Sterling can help her find the silver needed to restore Azurluna Kingdom. His cruel stepmother and half-brothers have made him a silent and broken man, whom the people regard as a simpleton. He longs for someone to love him but no longer believes he is worthy. When he encounters the princess, hope flickers to life. Then his stepmother does the unthinkable to Aderyn, and he vows to do whatever it takes to restore her to human form, even if it means living without her.

Will they ever be together, or will Aderyn be forced to marry one of Sterling’s brothers to regain her humanity? Will Sterling survive his stepmother’s scheme to kill him?

“A Faithful Hope,” a retelling of The Blue Bird, is a standalone novel, complete with tropes like Emotional Scars, He Falls First, and Friends to Lovers.
'The French master of noir' Observer

It felt like the slipknot on a rope round my chest was being tightened without pity
Trouble is the last thing Albert needs. Travelling back to his childhood home on Christmas Eve to mourn his mother's death, he finds the loneliness and nostalgia of his Parisian quartier unbearable... Until, that evening, he encounters a beautiful, seemingly innocent woman at a brasserie, and his spirits are lifted.

Still, something about the woman disturbs him. Where is the father of her child? And what are those two red stains on her sleeve? When she invites him back to her apartment, Albert thinks he's in luck. Sophrosune in the Greek Novel Reading Reactions to Desire【電子書籍】[ Rachel Bird ]
|

This book offers the first comprehensive evaluation of ethics in the ancient Greek novel, demonstrating how their representation of the cardinal virtue sophrosune positions these texts in their literary, philosophical and cultural contexts. Sophrosune encompasses the dispositions and psychological states of temperance, self-control, chastity, sanity and moderation. The Greek novels are the first examples of lengthy prose fiction in the Greek world, composed between the first century BCE and the fourth century CE. Each novel is concerned with a pair of beautiful, aristocratic lovers who undergo trials and tribulations, before a successful resolution is reached.

Bird focuses on the extant examples of the genre (Chariton's Callirhoe, Xenophon of Ephesus' Ephesiaca, Longus' Daphnis and Chloe, Achilles Tatius' Leucippe and Clitophon and Heliodorus' Aethiopica), which all have the virtue of sophrosune at their heart. As each pair of lovers strives to retain their chastity in the face of adversity, and under extreme pressure from eros, it is essential to understand how this virtue is represented in the characters within each novel. Invited modes of reading also involve sophrosune, and the author provides an important exploration of how sophrosune in the reader is both encouraged and undermined by these works of fiction.

Call Of The Litany Bird Surviving The Zimbabwe Bush War【電子書籍】[ Susan Gibbs ]

A compelling personal account of living through the atrocities as Rhodesia became Zimbabwe, whilst bringing up a family on a farm amidst the chaos. As a trained nurse, newly married to the son of the Governor of Rhodesia during the UDI years, Susan writes compellingly about bringing up a family on their farm in Matabeleland in the midst of the unfolding terror and growing number of atrocities. Above all it is a human story. Sometimes shocking and always moving, there is also warmth and humour as Susan creates a gripping picture of the conflict and tells of her family's survival when many of her friends and neighbouring farmers didn't. About a Bird: Poems From Jerry the Bird【電子書籍】[ Nolan Whyte ]

Jerry the Bird, the star of the beer-soaked, hard-boiled novel Among the Humans, wrote thousands of poems, sending them out to the little poetry magazines across America. About a Bird collects a few of these poems, where Jerry opens up about his difficult early life on the streets, discusses the challenges of being a bird in human society, and ruminates on love. Also included is a chapter of Among the Humans, an interview where he opens up about the success of his novel, and the last thing he ever wrote, a story titled "The Bird (A Very Short Novel)." Song of the Caged Bird Words as Resistance in Palestine【電子書籍】[ Marcello Di Cintio ]
|

For political readers and anyone invested in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, Marcello Di Cintio's Song of the Caged Bird is a refreshing look at Palestinian resistance--through literature and the power of books.

When Marcello Di Cintio began teaching at the Palestine Writing Workshop in Ramallah, he avoided making reference to the occupation in his assignments at first--to see if his students addressed it on their own--and he soon learned that it touches all aspects of Palestinian life. Curious how Palestinian literature could operate with its people so tied to a single narrative, Di Cintio began a journey through the Palestinian world of books: from the monument to the poet Mahmoud Darwish to the volumes in the Nablus Prisoners' library; from one of the West Bank's most successful bookshops to a century-old library in Jerusalem run by a family with a lineage in that city many centuries older. What he found is a world of identity and resistance that is considerably more complex--and potentially more hopeful--than what we see splashed across our screens.

Journeys in Persia and Kurdistan: Including a Summer in the Upper Karun Region and a Visit to the Nestorian Rayahs (Complete)【電子書籍】[ Isabella Lucy Bird ]
|

The letters of which these volumes are composed embrace the second half of journeys in the East extending over a period of two years. They attempt to be a faithful record of facts and impressions, but were necessarily written in haste at the conclusion of fatiguing marches, and often in circumstances of great discomfort and difficulty, and I relied for their correction in the event of publication on notes made with much care. Unfortunately I was robbed of nearly the whole of these, partly on my last journey in Persia and partly on the Turkish frontier,ーa serious loss, which must be my apology to the reader for errors which, without this misfortune, would not have occurred. The bibliography of Persia is a very extensive one, and it may well be that I have little that is new to communicate, except on a part of Luristan previously untraversed by Europeans; but each traveller receives a different impression from those made upon his predecessors, and I hope that my book may be accepted as an honest attempt to make a popular contribution to the sum of knowledge of a country and people with which we are likely to be brought into closer relations. As these volumes are simply travels in Persia and Eastern Asia Minor, and are not a book on either country, the references to such subjects as were not within the sphere of my observation are brief and incidental. The administration of government, the religious and legal systems, the tenure of land, and the mode of taxation are dismissed in a few lines, and social customs are only described when I came in contact with them. The Ilyats, or nomadic tribes, form a very remarkable element of the population of Persia, but I have only noticed two of their divisionsーthe Bakhtiari and Feili Lurs. The antiquities of Persia are also passed over with hardly a remark, as well as many other subjects, which have been "threshed out" by previous writers with more or less of accuracy. I make these omissions with all the more satisfaction, because most that is "knowable" concerning Persia will be accessible on the publication of a work now in the Press, Persia and the Persian Question, by the Hon. George N. Curzon, M.P., who has not only travelled extensively in the country, but has bestowed such enormous labour and research upon it, and has had such exceptional opportunities of acquiring the latest and best official information, that his volumes may fairly be described as "exhaustive." It is always a pleasant duty to acknowledge kindness, and I am deeply grateful to several friends for the help which they have given me in many ways, and for the trouble which some of them have taken to recover facts which were lost with my notes, as well as for the careful revision of a portion of my letters in MS. I am indebted to the Indian authorities for the materials for a sketch map, for photographs from which many of the illustrations are taken, and for the use of a valuable geographical report, and to Mr. Thistleton Dyer, Director of the Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew, for the identification of a few of my botanical specimens.

In Angel Dionne's new book, Bird Ornaments, we see the world in different, dazzling parts, which don't add up into something we can immediately grasp. Her poems are surrealist because they elevate, turn, and collapse the world into a kaleidoscopic dream that reverberates through "this glass prison." "The alphabet sings to her" and, unafraid, she sings right back. Listen to "A whole river grows from [her] mouth." Listen to the vowels and consonants, verbs, and nouns, of this oracular poet as "she parts the sea with her tongue."
? John Yau, winner of the American Book Award and author of Corpse and Mirror

Bird Ornaments achieves a masterful balance between surprising surrealist imagery and a hyper-focus on the language of the body. The collection features a powerful range of poetry, from reflective vignettes like the title track, to "A Fairy Tale for Children" (not for children), to the ruthlessly poignant maxims of "Life Cycles." A strong recommendation for fans of Jennifer O'Grady.
? I begin to fit myself into their world again.

And then everything changes. I'm caught in an avalanche and face death in those mountains, and when I survive it, the world is altered. The men who were shutting me out have shifted, and I can actually see them.

One is tough and unyielding, full of unspeakable desires.

The other has a tender soul, and a heart that melts in my hands.

And suddenly, Gunner and Gabe become more than the stepfather and stepbrother I thought I'd left behind.

They become everything.

If I'm brave enough to reach out and take them.

Little Bird features stepdad, stepbrother, lumberjack, grumpy/sunshine, forced proximity, snowed-in Christmas, and some extreme spice, and starts the brand new series Hawke's Wood from bestselling author Quinn Marlowe.

A Bird in Flight【電子書籍】[ Cliff Wilkerson ]

Ana?s Noemie Beaulieu, Born May 5, 1934, lives in a retirement home. At age ninety, as she writes a memoir, she reflect on her one life's passion. She lived during, and can remember, the "armed conflicts;" WWII, Korea, Vietnam, Iraq, and everything in between and after. She lived when there were no televisions, no computers, and no smart phones. She watched the first man in space and the first to land on the moon. These things barely caught her attention. Fiercely determined to succeed, she had little time to reflect on these traumas and advances of the greater world. She still pays little attention to them. Instead, with the aid of her granddaughter, she writes about what totally involved her for most of her ninety years, ballet. From age six on, she had no greater ambition than to fly across the stage en pointe and leap high, like a bird in flight, and then make a perfect, graceful landing.
