Song of the Caged Bird Words as Resistance in Palestine【電子書籍】[ Marcello Di Cintio ]

For political readers and anyone invested in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, Marcello Di Cintio's Song of the Caged Bird is a refreshing look at Palestinian resistance--through literature and the power of books.

When Marcello Di Cintio began teaching at the Palestine Writing Workshop in Ramallah, he avoided making reference to the occupation in his assignments at first--to see if his students addressed it on their own--and he soon learned that it touches all aspects of Palestinian life. Curious how Palestinian literature could operate with its people so tied to a single narrative, Di Cintio began a journey through the Palestinian world of books: from the monument to the poet Mahmoud Darwish to the volumes in the Nablus Prisoners' library; from one of the West Bank's most successful bookshops to a century-old library in Jerusalem run by a family with a lineage in that city many centuries older. What he found is a world of identity and resistance that is considerably more complex--and potentially more hopeful--than what we see splashed across our screens.

Journeys in Persia and Kurdistan: Including a Summer in the Upper Karun Region and a Visit to the Nestorian Rayahs (Complete)【電子書籍】[ Isabella Lucy Bird ]

The letters of which these volumes are composed embrace the second half of journeys in the East extending over a period of two years. They attempt to be a faithful record of facts and impressions, but were necessarily written in haste at the conclusion of fatiguing marches, and often in circumstances of great discomfort and difficulty, and I relied for their correction in the event of publication on notes made with much care. Unfortunately I was robbed of nearly the whole of these, partly on my last journey in Persia and partly on the Turkish frontier,ーa serious loss, which must be my apology to the reader for errors which, without this misfortune, would not have occurred. The bibliography of Persia is a very extensive one, and it may well be that I have little that is new to communicate, except on a part of Luristan previously untraversed by Europeans; but each traveller receives a different impression from those made upon his predecessors, and I hope that my book may be accepted as an honest attempt to make a popular contribution to the sum of knowledge of a country and people with which we are likely to be brought into closer relations. As these volumes are simply travels in Persia and Eastern Asia Minor, and are not a book on either country, the references to such subjects as were not within the sphere of my observation are brief and incidental. The administration of government, the religious and legal systems, the tenure of land, and the mode of taxation are dismissed in a few lines, and social customs are only described when I came in contact with them. The Ilyats, or nomadic tribes, form a very remarkable element of the population of Persia, but I have only noticed two of their divisionsーthe Bakhtiari and Feili Lurs. The antiquities of Persia are also passed over with hardly a remark, as well as many other subjects, which have been "threshed out" by previous writers with more or less of accuracy. I make these omissions with all the more satisfaction, because most that is "knowable" concerning Persia will be accessible on the publication of a work now in the Press, Persia and the Persian Question, by the Hon. George N. Curzon, M.P., who has not only travelled extensively in the country, but has bestowed such enormous labour and research upon it, and has had such exceptional opportunities of acquiring the latest and best official information, that his volumes may fairly be described as "exhaustive." It is always a pleasant duty to acknowledge kindness, and I am deeply grateful to several friends for the help which they have given me in many ways, and for the trouble which some of them have taken to recover facts which were lost with my notes, as well as for the careful revision of a portion of my letters in MS. I am indebted to the Indian authorities for the materials for a sketch map, for photographs from which many of the illustrations are taken, and for the use of a valuable geographical report, and to Mr. Thistleton Dyer, Director of the Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew, for the identification of a few of my botanical specimens.

In Angel Dionne's new book, Bird Ornaments, we see the world in different, dazzling parts, which don't add up into something we can immediately grasp. Her poems are surrealist because they elevate, turn, and collapse the world into a kaleidoscopic dream that reverberates through "this glass prison." "The alphabet sings to her" and, unafraid, she sings right back. Listen to "A whole river grows from [her] mouth." Listen to the vowels and consonants, verbs, and nouns, of this oracular poet as "she parts the sea with her tongue."
? John Yau, winner of the American Book Award and author of Corpse and Mirror

Bird Ornaments achieves a masterful balance between surprising surrealist imagery and a hyper-focus on the language of the body. The collection features a powerful range of poetry, from reflective vignettes like the title track, to "A Fairy Tale for Children" (not for children), to the ruthlessly poignant maxims of "Life Cycles." A strong recommendation for fans of Jennifer O'Grady.
? A Bird in Flight【電子書籍】[ Cliff Wilkerson ]

Ana?s Noemie Beaulieu, Born May 5, 1934, lives in a retirement home. At age ninety, as she writes a memoir, she reflect on her one life's passion. She lived during, and can remember, the "armed conflicts;" WWII, Korea, Vietnam, Iraq, and everything in between and after. She lived when there were no televisions, no computers, and no smart phones. She watched the first man in space and the first to land on the moon. These things barely caught her attention. Fiercely determined to succeed, she had little time to reflect on these traumas and advances of the greater world. She still pays little attention to them. Instead, with the aid of her granddaughter, she writes about what totally involved her for most of her ninety years, ballet. From age six on, she had no greater ambition than to fly across the stage en pointe and leap high, like a bird in flight, and then make a perfect, graceful landing.

Having grown up in Germany and then Manitoba, her final teen years were spent in New Brunswick after her father retired from the military. She believed it was important to have a stable home environment for her son. But instead, what she got was thirty-seven years of physical and emotional abuse that scarred both her and her children.

Yet within this abusive environment, Susan did everything in her power to keep her children safe and even find moments of happiness. Like the mama bird in the story that she tells to her adopted daughter, she knows it is her job to nurture her children until they leave the nest. Several times when the abuse gets to be too much, she takes her children and leaves, but each time she returns defeated to the only life she has known as an adult.

By sharing her personal experiences and innermost thoughts, Susan helps readers understand the psychological effects of abuse that keep an abused woman from leaving a relationship and the harm this does to her children. It takes almost four decades, but ultimately, Susan does break free from the bonds of her marriage and begins to finally find herself. Believing, I was thus born again from spiritual death and became by God's grace a 'new creation.' Since then, I have been involved in a number of ministries, traveled much, lived in various countries. My life has been exciting, though not without sadness and tragedy.

When I encountered God, I was a cynical, hard-bitten, sarcastic sophist. By His wonderful grace, He has made me (a hopefully productive) member of His kingdom. My consuming interest is to introduce others to the God I know. “For this is eternal life...”

Taking Hold Of Eternal Life (1 Timothy 6:12) is what I did after God confronted me on the weekend of my 34th birthday, July 27, 1969. This book tells what led up to that momentous event and then what followed as God in His mercy delivered me from atheism and immediately plunged me into Biblical revelation and ministerial involvement in His kingdom.

As the account of my life walking hand-in-hand with Him shows in the pages of this book, God used me in each of the five "callings" listed in Ephesians 4:11. Over the course of forty-five years God has had me involved in numerous churches & various ministries which has resulted in the comments and articles that are also contained in this book. I pray that God uses this book to bless you greatly!

The Penguin Lessons What I Learned from a Remarkable Bird【電子書籍】[ Tom Michell ]

NOW A MAJOR MOTION PICTURE ? The extraordinary and inspiring true story about the surprising bond between a young teacher and the small penguin he rescued

“The Penguin Lessons teaches an important truth: that a single act of compassion can be repaid a thousand-fold.”ーSy Montgomery, author of the National Book Award finalist The Soul of an Octopus

In 1975, twenty-three-year-old Englishman Tom Michell follows his wanderlust to Argentina, where he becomes assistant master at a prestigious boarding school. But Michell’s adventures really begin when, on a weekend in Uruguay, he rescues a penguin covered in oil from an ocean spill, cleans the bird up, and attempts to return him to the sea. The penguin refuses to leave his rescuer’s side. “That was the moment at which he became my penguin, and whatever the future held, we’d face it together,” says Michell in this charming memoir.

Michell names the penguin Juan Salvador (“John Saved”), but Juan Salvador, as it turns out, is the one who saves Michell.

After Michell smuggles the bird back to Argentina and into his campus apartment, word spreads about the young Englishman’s unusual roommate. Juan Salvador is suddenly the center of attentionーas mascot of the rugby team, confidant to the dorm housekeeper, co-host of Michell’s parties, and an unprecedented swimming coach to a shy boy. Even through the collapse of the Per?nist government and amid the country’s economic and political strife, Juan Salvador brings joy to everyone around himーespecially Michell, who considers the affectionate animal a compadre and kindred spirit.

Witty and heartwarming, The Penguin Lessons is a classic in the making, a story that is both absurd and wonderful, exactly like Juan Salvador.
