Beyond the Old Frontier【電子書籍】[ George Bird Grinnell ]

The vast territory between the Mississippi River and the Pacific Ocean was once the Far West, beyond the frontier, the Indian countryーthe unknown. Beyond the great river which bounded it on the east was a fringe of settlements. Scattered through the more distant country were the trading-posts to which the trapper brought his furs. Gold was discovered in California, and a wild rush of people anxious to better their condition had started across the plains, bound for the distant Eldorado. Along these deep-worn roads were the graves of those who had perished on the way; sometimes mere mounds of earth, hardly showing on the level prairie, or perhaps marked by a bit of board thrust in the ground, bearing a pencilled name and date, which the winter’s storms would soon obliterate. Gold was then discovered in the Rocky Mountains. The village of Denver was established, and along the mountain streams the prospector worked with pick and shovel and pan, and wore away his strength and his courage in hunting for gold. Montana also began to yield gold, and Salmon River and Alder Gulch were at the beginnings of their fame. Stages were running across the continent, and the pony express was established. The accounts in the following pages deal with that country, then unknown, and the explorers who penetrated it. It deals with exploration, hunting, the taking of fur, and Indians in peace and war.

The Crocodile Bird【電子書籍】[ James E Tague ]

These pieces are offered as works composed over many years, by a writer who shares the view of the late, brilliant Hilary Corke, that ones style has shown progression if not a progress. At least they are published, collected from forgotten files, and as Corke so aptly phrased it, candidates for survival rather than lurking in sad typescript awaiting public birth. Certainly they are creations set in time and it is over time that they will be remembered or forgotten, since time is the only judge to render a final verdict. Since a poem is rarely finished to the full satisfaction of its author, it reaches a stage where it is merely abandoned. Hopefully it has found completion to the extent, so properly defined by Robert Frost, where the emotion has found its thought and the thought has found the words. The Case of Rose Bird Gender, Politics, and the California Courts【電子書籍】[ Kathleen A. Cairns ]

Rose Elizabeth Bird was forty years old when in 1977 Governor Edmund G. “Jerry” Brown chose her to become California’s first female supreme court chief justice. Appointed to a court with a stellar reputation for being the nation’s most progressive, Bird became a lightning rod for the opposition due to her liberalism, inexperience, and gender. Over the next decade, her name became a rallying cry as critics mounted a relentless effort to get her off the court. Bird survived three unsuccessful recall efforts, but her opponents eventually succeeded in bringing about her defeat in 1986, making her the first chief justice to be removed from the California Supreme Court.

The Case of Rose Bird provides a fascinating look at this important and complex woman and the political and cultural climate of California in the 1970s and 1980s. Seeking to uncover the identities and motivations of Bird’s vehement critics, Kathleen A. Cairns traces Bird’s meteoric rise and cataclysmic fall. Cairns considers the instrumental role that then-current gender dynamics played in Bird’s downfall, most visible in the tensions between second-wave feminism and the many Americans who felt that a “radical” feminist agenda might topple long-standing institutions and threaten “traditional” values.

Something New Alternative Poems for Alternative Weddings【電子書籍】[ Caroline Bird ]

Until recently, a wedding was no place for reinvention: everything from the location to the outfits to the language of the ceremony was decided by our particular cultures, religions and social expectations of gender and domestic roles; and of course, many of us were unable to get married at all. Now gay marriage is legal in Britain; heterosexual couples can have civil partnerships; we can get hitched in a yurt or a cave or on a rollercoaster.

But the old traditions die hard, and despite these apparent new freedoms, the word ‘wedding’ still retains so many connotations, controlling our imaginations in ways that can feel alienating or limiting. When it comes to the ‘wedding poem’, even a Star Trek themed do, with guests in bumpy skull-caps, can still translate the same old Shakespeare sonnet into Klingon.

This anthology aims to shake that up, featuring poems you won’t find on any ‘lists’ in your frantic Google search. Alternative poems for alternative weddings, be they small, huge, camp as Christmas, hilarious, glamorous, shot-gun, a third wedding held in a nursing home, or the low-key but profound culmination of a forty-year love. If you’re looking for a non-cringey wedding poem, or want to be reminded of the multiplicity of love, this is the book for you.

A Pessimist in Theory and Practice【電子書籍】[ Frederic Mayer Bird ]

In the theoretical aspect, Bird likely explores the philosophical foundations of pessimism, examining its historical roots and the various schools of thought that have contributed to its development. This might involve an analysis of pessimistic philosophers such as Arthur Schopenhauer, who famously posited that life is characterized by suffering and that existence is ultimately meaningless. On the practical side, Bird might explore how pessimism manifests in everyday life and how individuals grapple with its implications. This could involve discussions on topics such as existential despair, nihilism, and the struggle to find meaning and purpose in a seemingly indifferent universe.Overall, "A Pessimist in Theory and Practice" likely offers a comprehensive exploration of pessimism, blending theoretical insights with practical observations to provide readers with a deeper understanding of this philosophical perspective and its impact on human experience.

In 1673 the first European explorers to travel down the Mississippi River spot on the high, sheer bluffs the painting of a huge, winged monster. Where does it come from?

Why did somebody take the trouble and risk to paint it on the bluff face? The Indians told them the terrifying story of a man-eating dragon-like creature, and the brave chief who killed it.

This historical, Native American dragon fantasy short story previously published in FANTASTIC December 1975, and unavailable since then, until now.

We know dragon stories and legends from Europe and Asia go back thousands of years. Did some such creature prey on people just north of modern-day St. Louis? A dragon in North America?

The French explorers Pere Marquette and Joliet paddle their canoes down the Father of Waters, the first Europeans to journey through the middle of the newly discovered continent of North America.

They spot the painting.

Why did some unnamed Indian artist risk their life to create it? The perpendicular bluffs rise up from the river hundreds of feet high. Other Indians must have lowered the artist on a rope from the top, and the artist dangled above the rocks of the rivershore as they worked.

Canoes of Indian warriors pass the explorers on the river. As they pass the painting of the dragon-like, flying monster, they shoot arrows at the Indian dragon.

A certain loss of good arrows, because they break or bounce off the white limestone rock of the bluff and fall into the river.

What frightens the Indians so much?

"Little Bird Told Me" is a hippie novel that gets its title from parts in the book where an American Indian named "Little Bird" helps bring a hippie couple to enlightenment. The women member of the couple utters a cliche' about her new-found enlightenment by saying, "A Little Bird Told Me" To say anything definite about the plot would be giving it away, but it contains a little bit of everything. It is a highly psychological, mystical, surrealistic plot that involves a young hippie couple who reach enlightenment. It involves their tragedy and triumph. There is kidnapping, mental illness, psychedelia, folk-rock, radicals and liberals, good hippies, a hippie terrorist, amateur telescope makers, ecological power companies, gurus, enlightenment, and many other things. Corral Dust from Across the Big Divide More Ghost Writings of Charles M. Russell.【電子書籍】[ Richard Bird Baker ]

Will Rogers wrote, CHARLIE RUSSELL is the only western artist a true cowboy cant find fault with. Rogers also considered Charlie Americas best storyteller, cowboy humorist, and sagebrush philosopher.

Though Charlie was under-schooled and semi-literate, his salty Rawhide Rawlins yarns still delight readers eight decades after he crossed the big divide.

Richard Bird Baker has long striven to bring Russells wit, humor, cynicism, and horse sense back to life. In this collection of western yarns, Mr. Baker utilizes Charlie Russell as his early-twentieth-century-styled narrator. He depicts Russell telling yarns in Charlies personal style, utilizing ample dry humor expressed in colorful cowboy lingo. These yarns convey many facets of late-nineteenth-century cowboy life, the good times and the hardships, the joys and sorrows, and above all, the humor and good nature of the western folk icon, the American cowboy.

This book is a must for fans of cowboy humor, salty western metaphors, and sagebrush philosophy.

Spix’s Macaw The Race to Save the World’s Rarest Bird (Text Only)【電子書籍】[ Tony Juniper ]

An environmental parable for our times ? the story of a beautiful blue bird meeting its nemesis at the end of the 20th-century.

In December 1897 the Reverend F. G. Dutton lamented that ‘there are so many calls on a parson’s purse, that he cannot always treat himself to expensive parrots.’ He was hoping to purchase a Spix’s Macaw, a rare and beautiful parrot found in a remote area of Brazil. Today, the parson’s search would be in vain. By the turn of the millennium only one survivor, a lone male, existed in the wild.

Spix’s Macaw tells the hearbreaking story of a unique band of brilliant blue birds ? who talk, fall in love, and grieve ? struggling against the forces of extinction and their own desirability. By the second half of the 20th-century the birds became gram for gram more valuable than heroin; so valuable that they drew up to $40,000 on the black markets. When, in 1990, only one was found to be living in the wild, an emergency international rescue operation was launched and an amnesty declared, allowing private collectors to come forward with their illegal birds, possible mates for the last wild Spix.

In a breathtaking display of stoicism and endurance, the loneliest bird in the world had lived without a mate for fourteen years, had outwitted predators and second-guessed the poachers. But would he take to a new companion? Spix’s Macaws are like humans ? they can’t be forced to love. With exquisite detail, this book tells the dramatic story of the rescue operation, and of the humans whose selfishness and greed brought a beautiful species to the brink of extinction. The long, lonely flight of the last Spix’s Macaw is both a love story and an environmental parable for our times.
