The Book of Flowers, Birds, and Kisses【電子書籍】[ Scott Vanya ]

There was a period before my divorce (one and only) I was an avid reader of Pablo Neruda. And Love Sonnets appealed to me a great deal, so much so that my wife and I used one his sonnets at our wedding. So for many years she and I had a wonderful marriage and I wrote many a love poem.

This is a collection of love poems, not just of a man to a woman, but a man to the world, nature, etc.

It stands out in my works, for its focus on a certain theme, and it's light-heartedness, which sometimes is not the case.

I think many of them are quite beautiful, and in my writing them I paid homage to that which would bring two people so close together that, as Neruda puts, the sleepers can no longer distinguish their hand from the others.

The New York Times Bestseller

From the acclaimed author of Garden Spells comes an enchanting tale of lost souls, lonely strangers, secrets that shape us, and how the right flock can guide you home.

Down a narrow alley in the small coastal town of Mallow Island, South Carolina, lies a stunning cobblestone building comprised of five apartments. It’s called The Dellawisp and it is named after the tiny turquoise birds who, alongside its human tenants, inhabit an air of magical secrecy.

When Zoey Hennessey comes to claim her deceased mother’s apartment at The Dellawisp, she meets her quirky, enigmatic neighbors including a girl on the run, a grieving chef whose comfort food does not comfort him, two estranged middle-aged sisters, and three ghosts. Each with their own story. Each with their own longings. Each whose ending isn’t yet written.

When one of her new neighbors dies under odd circumstances the night Zoey arrives, she is thrust into the mystery of The Dellawisp, which involves missing pages from a legendary writer whose work might be hidden there. She soon discovers that many unfinished stories permeate the place, and the people around her are in as much need of healing from wrongs of the past as she is. To find their way they have to learn how to trust each other, confront their deepest fears, and let go of what haunts them.

Delightful and atmospheric, Other Birds is filled with magical realism and moments of pure love that won’t let you go. Sarah Addison Allen shows us that between the real and the imaginary, there are stories that take flight in the most extraordinary ways.

The Fire Bird Sign【電子書籍】[ Ahmed Khalil ]
|

Five months ago, the world ended. A comet called the Fire Bird burned the sky, and its silent, sweeping tail erased a century of technology in a single flash. Now, under a sunless, frozen sky, humanity starves in the dark, clinging to stories of what was. But from the ashes of the old world, two saviors offer a new one. In the East, ancient prophecies ignite as a reluctant scholar is hailed as the Mahdi, a divine guide for a desperate pilgrimage of the faithful. From a hidden sanctuary, a charismatic technocrat known as the Dajjal emerges, offering a paradise of warmth and food to anyone who will accept his absolute authority. As a lone scientist who predicted the fall, a theologian whose academic faith is shattered by literal prophecy, and a soldier disgusted by worldly tyrants are caught between the black banners of a holy army and the gleaming cities of a false god, they must answer the ultimate question: in a world where miracles are real, how do you tell a savior from the Great Deceiver before the final judgment falls upon all of humanity?

Starting with Looking through Letterboxes in 2002 when she was fifteen years old, she has published six Carcanet books, culminating in The Air Year which was awarded the Forward Prize in 2020, shortlisted for the Polari Book Prize and the Costa Poetry Prize, and a Book of the Year in the Telegraph, Guardian and White Review.
In the distant future, humans are on the verge of extinction and have settled in small tribes across the planet under the observation and care of the Mothers. Some children are made in factories, from cells of rabbits and dolphins; some live by getting nutrients from water and light, like plants. The survival of the race depends on the interbreeding of these and other alien beings - but it is far from certain that connection, love, reproduction, and evolution will persist among the inhabitants of this faltering new world.

Unfolding over geological eons, Under the Eye of the Big Bird is at once an astonishing vision of the end of our species as we know it and a meditation on the qualities that, for better and worse, make us human.

The fundamental themes of landscape, love and loss are all celebrated in this collection. Some of the poems have a political quality, reflecting the challenges and uncertainties of life in the 21st century; others simply honour the joy, the struggles, and the hopefulness of daily life. The poems encompass a wide genre, but all reflect a connection between people and place. Many celebrate the poet's 'home paddock' while others look to the wider world. Afriation Phobia A Psycho-Phobic Novel【電子書籍】[ Richard Bird Baker ]
|

This is perhaps the most unique novel you will ever read. It contains no conventional narrative. The voice that delivers the plot and its messages is the voice the main character constantly hears in his head. The voice constantly speaks in short imperatives, and often separates into two bickering voices. Presenting this mental condition requires second-person writing, something rarely found in fiction.

An afriation is an organization or institution that forces one to constantly associate with people one wouldnt choose for company. This novels main character is not an easy person to like, but is very easy to empathize with. This mentally unsound individual has an excessive fear of afriats, people we are forced to interact with via an afriation. As a result, he is often a homeless transient feeling forced into being either a trespasser or a vagrant.

The voice in our characters mind carries you with him hitchhiking on freeways, hopping freight trains, struggling with employment in a conventional afriation, side-stepping civilization, and going to jail. It follows his thought processes as tension leads to a mental collapse. This novel is more than a typical action fiction. It presents a unique and valuable insight into our social structure that is yet to be dealt with by social scientists, one that is based on the types of social interactions we encounter.

The Mechanical Bird【電子書籍】[ Asa Boxer ]

An old idea of reality animates the poems in The Mechanical Bird: things are never what they seem. Opening with a quick-talking disquisition on lying (Keep it simple, tidy, / take a noncommittal stance) and ending with masterly mediation on the workshop and its drawing-board dreams, Asa Boxers debut constantly tests the claims of authenticity over artifice. Objects, settings and everyday details are swept up in an imagination that can never quite shake the sense of the visible worldeven nature itselfas an artful mixture of fact and invention. As suggested by the eponymous metal songster, these poems are exquisitely crafted, infused with a sense of kinetic spell-making, and sing with an exuberant trust in their own guile.

The Belles of Canterbury: A Chaucer Tale Out of School【電子書籍】[ Anna Bird Stewart ]

The simplicity of the costuming as well as of the stage setting makes the play an easy one for amateurs to produce. The dress of the four school girls should be as modern as possible. Their hair should be elaborately arranged. Hippolyta should wear the dress of an Amazon, armor if possible, or a short skirt, sandals laced high with crossed strings, waist to match the skirt, a crown, and a shield on the left arm. The shield can he made by gilding or covering a barrel-head with silver paper. Emily wears a long gown of pale dull green cheese cloth, falling straight from the shoulders and girded in at the waist by a curtain cord. She must have fair hair which should be braided down her back. Griselda should wear a similar costume of pale gray and lavender, with a tall headdress of wire covered with white gauze and tinsel. The Wife of Bath wears a short skirted costume of very bright colors, red stockings, very broad shoes, a straw hat with a broad brim and no trimming, if possible one of the sun hats worn by farmers. The Prioress and her Nuns wear black skirts and white waists. Over this they wear black scholastic gowns such as are worn by graduates of academies and colleges, girded in with a leather strap. A yard of white cloth cut down one side for about ten inches, and then a circle cut out of the center, makes the whiteguimpe for the Nun, the curved part being put under the chin and the two cut ends fastened on top of the head. A second piece of white cloth is bound across the forehead for a bandeau. Two yards of black material make the veil which falls on either side of the face and down the back.

She would politely encourage you not to believe what you read in the papers."

Muriel Spark was one of literature's great shapeshifters. That mercurial quality is found in her strange, brilliant, cruel novels - with their plots featuring pensioners receiving telephone calls from Death, the devil going clubbing in Peckham and a fascist schoolmistress leading her coterie of girls astray - but it is also true of her as a person.

As sly, nimble and elegant as Spark's own work, Like a Cat Loves a Bird is a thrilling new perspective on a remarkable life and career that spanned much of the twentieth century. From her childhood in Edinburgh to her final years in Tuscany - via South Africa, London, New York and Rome - it traces a light-footed journey around the world and through her strange and magnificent bibliography. It tells an irresistible story of transformation, wit and fierce determination and makes a passionate case for this vital modern artist.

"You don't have to be a Muriel Spark fan to enjoy the sharp wit of Like a Cat Loves a Bird, a fascinating and nuanced exploration of the sacrifices some make to focus on their art"
LUKE TURNER, author of Out of the Woods

"Vital, fun and immediate . . . full of engaging and astute literary analysis of Spark's work as well as scintillating, vivid biography"
FRANCESCA REECE, author of Glass Houses

"A readable and fascinating book, about an under-appreciated literary giant"
LUCINDA HAWKSLEY, author of The Mystery of Princess Louise

The Mocking-Bird【電子書籍】[ Ambrose Bierce ]

|

In Ambrose Bierce's "The Mocking-Bird," the author artfully weaves a narrative that is rich with imagery and biting social commentary. Set against the backdrop of rural America, the tale showcases the complexities of human emotions and the subtleties of moral dilemmas through the lens of a seemingly simple story. Bierce's literary style, characterized by his sardonic wit and keen observations, allows for a deep exploration of themes such as illusion versus reality and the nature of truth, encapsulating a pivotal moment in American literature that reflects broader societal concerns of his time. Ambrose Bierce, an influential figure in American literature, is best known for his acerbic prose, much of which stems from his experiences as a Civil War soldier and his disappointment with societal conventions. His encounters with the absurdities of life and death motivated him to probe the darker aspects of human nature and societal hypocrisy, creating a unique voice that resonates throughout "The Mocking-Bird". Bierce's distinctive perspective is shaped by both his literary influences and personal disillusionments, informing his vivid storytelling. This compelling work is an essential read for those interested in the intricacies of human relationships and the often opaque boundary between truth and deception. Bierce's articulate prose invites readers to contemplate their own moral convictions while engaging them in a rich tapestry of narrative that remains relevant today. "The Mocking-Bird" is not only a significant literary endeavor but also a profound reflection on the human condition.
