Two-time Lambda Literary Award-winning author Ann McMan takes readers inside the inner workings of the funeral home business as only she can in this remarkable and wholly unforgettable romantic comedy that proves Life is for the Living.

Everything about Lilah Stohler is dark: her clothes, her mood, and her outlook on life and death. That last part is important because Lilah’s father has just retired and left her in charge of Stohler’s Funeral Home. But Abel Stohler knows his daughter’s comfort level rests “downstairs,” so he hires one Sparkle Lee Sink, to help Lilah manage the living part of the business of death.

Sparkle is everything that Lilah isn’tーan empathetic marketing whiz who is a true people person. Lilah isn’t happy about this new arrangement. Still, when business starts booming because of Sparkle’s bright personality, delicious baked goods, and knack for funereal commerce, Lilah thinks things might work out. But joy is fleeting in the funeral home business, and Lilah’s world is turned upside down when an unwitting Instagram post featuring one of her moods goes viralーand now, sightings of “The Black Bird of Chernobyl” have become an obsession across the Instaverse.

Lilah knows that Sparkle needs to go, but before she can give her the send-off she deserves, Lilah must first find a way to deal with the inconvenient attraction she’s developed for the nemesis whose unconventional methods are single-handedly transforming the death tradeーand possibly the Black Bird, herself.
画面が切り替わりますので、しばらくお待ち下さい。 ※ご購入は、楽天kobo商品ページからお願いします。※切り替わらない場合は、こちら をクリックして下さい。 ※このページからは注文できません。

I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings【電子書籍】[ Maya Angelou ]

|

Here is a book as joyous and painful, as mysterious and memorable, as childhood itself. I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings captures the longing of lonely children, the brute insult of bigotry, and the wonder of words that can make the world right. Maya Angelou’s debut memoir is a modern American classic beloved worldwide.

Sent by their mother to live with their devout, self-sufficient grandmother in a small Southern town, Maya and her brother, Bailey, endure the ache of abandonment and the prejudice of the local “powhitetrash.” At eight years old and back at her mother’s side in St. Louis, Maya is attacked by a man many times her ageーand has to live with the consequences for a lifetime. Years later, in San Francisco, Maya learns that love for herself, the kindness of others, her own strong spirit, and the ideas of great authors (“I met and fell in love with William Shakespeare”) will allow her to be free instead of imprisoned.

Poetic and powerful, I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings will touch hearts and change minds for as long as people read.

“I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings liberates the reader into life simply because Maya Angelou confronts her own life with such a moving wonder, such a luminous dignity.”ーJames Baldwin
画面が切り替わりますので、しばらくお待ち下さい。 ※ご購入は、楽天kobo商品ページからお願いします。※切り替わらない場合は、こちら をクリックして下さい。 ※このページからは注文できません。

**SHORTLISTED FOR THE INTERNATIONAL BOOKER PRIZE

From one of Japan's most brilliant and sensitive contemporary novelists, this speculative fiction masterpiece envisions an Earth where humans are nearing extinction, and rewrites our understanding of reproduction, ecology, evolution, artificial intelligence, communal life, creation, love, and the future of humanity**

In the distant future, humans are on the verge of extinction and have settled in small tribes across the planet under the observation and care of "Mothers." Some children are made in factories, from cells of rabbits and dolphins; some live by getting nutrients from water and light, like plants. The survival of the race depends on the interbreeding of these and other alien beings--but it is far from certain that connection, love, reproduction, and evolution will persist among the inhabitants of this faltering new world.

Unfolding over fourteen interconnected episodes spanning geological eons, at once technical and pastoral, mournful and utopic, Under the Eye of the Big Bird presents an astonishing vision of the end of our species as we know it.
画面が切り替わりますので、しばらくお待ち下さい。 ※ご購入は、楽天kobo商品ページからお願いします。※切り替わらない場合は、こちら をクリックして下さい。 ※このページからは注文できません。

The Bird【電子書籍】[ Jules Michelet ]
楽天Kobo電子書籍ストア
|

In "The Bird," Jules Michelet embarks on a lyrical exploration of avian life that transcends mere natural observation, immersing readers in the interconnectedness of nature and humanity. Written in the mid-19th century, the book reflects the Romantic literary style, characterized by vivid imagery and an emotional connection to the subject matter. Michelet employs an almost poetic prose, weaving together scientific observations with philosophical musings, ultimately revealing his reverence for birds as symbols of freedom and inspiration amidst the industrial age's encroachments on nature. The work stands as a testament to the burgeoning interest in biology and environment during the Enlightenment period, positioning birds as integral elements of the ecosystem worthy of admiration and protection. Jules Michelet (1798-1874), a prominent French historian and naturalist, is often noted for his passionate engagement with the natural world and its historical context. His background in history, combined with his fascination for nature, led him to reconcile the scientific and the spiritual in his writing. This duality is evident in "The Bird," where his admiration for the natural world is steeped in a historical narrative that reveals both human and avian evolution, reflecting the interconnectedness of all living things. For readers seeking a unique blend of nature writing and historical insight, "The Bird" offers a captivating journey into the world of birds, encouraging a deeper appreciation of their role in our lives and the environment. Michelet's evocative prose invites both ornithologists and casual readers alike to reflect on the beauty of nature and the urgency of its preservation. This work is essential reading for anyone interested in the intersections of literature, nature, and history.
画面が切り替わりますので、しばらくお待ち下さい。 ※ご購入は、楽天kobo商品ページからお願いします。※切り替わらない場合は、こちら をクリックして下さい。 ※このページからは注文できません。

The Bird of Time【電子書籍】[ Sarojini Naidu ]

|

In "The Bird of Time," Sarojini Naidu masterfully weaves a tapestry of lyrical verse that captures the essence of Indian culture and the universal human experience. This evocative collection, largely composed during the early 20th century, showcases Naidu's unique ability to blend Indian themes with Western literary forms, further enriched by her adept use of natural imagery and musical rhythm. The poems reflect a deep appreciation for nature and love, while also addressing social issues, a characteristic of Naidu's broader literary context, which sought to illuminate the struggles and aspirations of her time. Sarojini Naidu, often hailed as the "Nightingale of India," was a prominent freedom fighter, poet, and first female governor in independent India. Born in 1879 to a progressive family, her multifaceted background in art and politics undeniably influenced her writing. Naidu's experiences abroad and her position within the Indian independence movement provided her with a keen insight into the interplay of cultural identity and political consciousness, both of which resonate throughout her poetry. Readers seeking a rich, sensory exploration of love, nature, and national identity will find "The Bird of Time" an essential addition to their literary journey. Naidu's eloquence invites readers into a world where beauty meets social consciousness, making this collection not only a tribute to her heritage but also a timeless reflection on the human spirit.
画面が切り替わりますので、しばらくお待ち下さい。 ※ご購入は、楽天kobo商品ページからお願いします。※切り替わらない場合は、こちら をクリックして下さい。 ※このページからは注文できません。

A Lady's Life in the Rocky Mountains【電子書籍】[ Isabella Bird ]

|

A Lady's Life in the Rocky Mountains is a travel book, by Isabella Bird, describing her 1873 trip to the Rocky Mountains of Colorado. The book is a compilation of letters that Isabella Bird wrote to her sister, Henrietta. In 1872, Isabella left Britain, going first to Australia, then to Hawaii, which she refers to as the Sandwich Islands. In 1873 she travelled to Colorado, then the Colorado Territory. After living a time in Hawaii, she takes a boat, to San Francisco. She passed the area of Lake Tahoe, to Cheyenne, Wyoming, to ultimate Estes Park, Colorado, also elsewhere in and near the Rocky Mountains of the Colorado Territory. Early in Colorado, she met Rocky Mountain Jim, described as a desperado, but with whom she got along quite well. She described him as, "He is a man whom any woman might love but no sane woman would marry." She was the first white woman to stand atop Longs Peak, Colorado, pointing out that Jim "dragged me up, like a bale of goods, by sheer force of muscle." Rocky Mountain Jim treated her quite well, and it is sad to note, he was shot to death, seven months later. After many other adventures, Isabella Bird ultimately took a train, east. Upon publication, A Lady's Life in the Rocky Mountains proved an "instant bestseller" and is still considered to be her best work.
画面が切り替わりますので、しばらくお待ち下さい。 ※ご購入は、楽天kobo商品ページからお願いします。※切り替わらない場合は、こちら をクリックして下さい。 ※このページからは注文できません。

Nudity is for the Birds A Smart, Sexy, Nerdy First-Time Romance【電子書籍】[ Kethandra Wilde ]

For the third year, red-headed virgin Robin poses her riddle to the naked masses at the local Nude Day celebration, hoping to find her intellectual needle in a Midwestern haystack.

Can Jay's knowledge of birds and riddling win the day and Robin's heart? This sexy, sweet, and charming story of first-time love is sure to delight as they discover their shared love of birds, words, and each other.

~~~~~ Excerpt ~~~~~
That left Jay alone, thoughtful and nearly petrified with fear. At least he tried to remain thoughtful, while alternating images popped in and out of his mind's eye.
Perfect freckled cleavage framed in lace. Root beer-soaked fried mushrooms. Freckles. Mushrooms. Cleavage.
She was truly gorgeous. Not beauty contest, make-up and hairdo gorgeous. Natural, towel-dry-and-ready-to-go stunning radiance, especially with her hair shining even more resplendently in the recently-appearing sun's rays. That wonderful smile always near the surface.
And her body! He couldn't see freckles from here, but he could sure see her cleavage, pink and protruding but not too much. A belly that swelled that slightest just enough to lead the eye down to a short, shapely triangle of orange-red hair peaking out between her legs. Her legs were decidedly curvier and softer than the tall, slim girl next to her. Creamy smooth legs that would be heaven wrapped around your hips or sliding softly over cheeks as your nose and mouth nuzzled closer to their moistening zenith.
Jay rarely considered himself a poet, but Red brought out his inner sonneteer. His eyes continued their journey the length of her legs, stopped at her shoes. Boat shoes, kind of preppy, in a bright blue. A blue that went well with her red hair and blue eyes, but an odd choice.
Think, Jaybird, think! You're different from these clods, these bumpkins that have been universally wrong. You're brilliant in school, you know calculus and organic chemistry like few your age, you have personally seen and identified over 207 species of birds. Why would you be intimidated by a simple pair of bare boobies?
An image came to Jay then of Boobies, the pelagic birds similar to the Albatross, bobbing their heads in their unique, comical mating dance. Nature shows on TV loved to score the motion with upbeat Jazz. Red wanted to do her own mating dance, or she wouldn't be here, naked, having strange men lineup to try and solve her riddle. While wearing those odd blue shoes.
What was her mating dance? Don't step on my blue boat shoes?
画面が切り替わりますので、しばらくお待ち下さい。 ※ご購入は、楽天kobo商品ページからお願いします。※切り替わらない場合は、こちら をクリックして下さい。 ※このページからは注文できません。
The Man Who Ate Too Much The Life of James Beard【電子書籍】[ John Birdsall ]
|
**A Finalist for the 2022 James Beard Foundation Cookbook Award (Writing)
The definitive biography of America’s best-known and least-understood food personality, and the modern culinary landscape he shaped.**
In the first portrait of James Beard in twenty-five years, John Birdsall accomplishes what no prior telling of Beard’s life and work has done: He looks beyond the public image of the "Dean of American Cookery" to give voice to the gourmet’s complex, queer life and, in the process, illuminates the history of American food in the twentieth century. At a time when stuffy French restaurants and soulless Continental cuisine prevailed, Beard invented something strange and new: the notion of an American cuisine.
Informed by previously overlooked correspondence, years of archival research, and a close reading of everything Beard wrote, this majestic biography traces the emergence of personality in American food while reckoning with the outwardly gregarious Beard’s own need for love and connection, arguing that Beard turned an unapologetic pursuit of pleasure into a new model for food authors and experts.
Born in Portland, Oregon, in 1903, Beard would journey from the pristine Pacific Coast to New York’s Greenwich Village by way of gay undergrounds in London and Paris of the 1920s. The failed actor?turned?Manhattan canap? hawker?turned?author and cooking teacher was the jovial bachelor uncle presiding over America’s kitchens for nearly four decades. In the 1940s he hosted one of the first television cooking shows, and by flouting the rules of publishing would end up crafting some of the most expressive cookbooks of the twentieth century, with recipes and stories that laid the groundwork for how we cook and eat today.
In stirring, novelistic detail, The Man Who Ate Too Much brings to life a towering figure, a man who still represents the best in eating and yet has never been fully understoodーuntil now. This is biography of the highest order, a book about the rise of America’s food written by the celebrated writer who fills in Beard’s life with the color and meaning earlier generations were afraid to examine.
画面が切り替わりますので、しばらくお待ち下さい。 ※ご購入は、楽天kobo商品ページからお願いします。※切り替わらない場合は、こちら をクリックして下さい。 ※このページからは注文できません。
