Hattie Wax is the type of woman that people cross the street to avoid. Loud and unapologetically fierce about her convictions, she makes people uncomfortable. When the esteemed local judge makes frequent use of the gallows, attempting to bring law and order to Arkansas in the 1880s, Hattie frequents the executions, vehemently opposing the sentences and offering comfort to the condemned. Labeled as deplorable, Hattie lives on the outskirts of ordinary society with her unlikely lover, an outcast in his own right, and her self-made, unconventional family. Hattie is determined to help the people who are often neglected, in her own unique way. After surviving a tragic childhood, Hattie forged her own path, found a man she dares to love with her whole heart and lives according to her own moral compass. The Little White Bird; Or, Adventures in Kensington Gardens【電子書籍】[ J. M. Barrie ]

"The Little White Bird" is divided into two parts. The first part is a series of stories and sketches that take place in Kensington Gardens in London. These tales are narrated by an unnamed character and feature a young boy named David, who is based on Barrie's adopted son, George Llewelyn Davies. In these stories, David leads a magical and adventurous life in Kensington Gardens, which are depicted as a fantastical realm inhabited by fairies, birds, and other enchanting creatures. The second part of the book introduces the character of Peter Pan for the first time. Peter is a mischievous and ageless boy who can fly and is the leader of a group of children who live in Kensington Gardens. This incarnation of Peter Pan predates the more famous version that appears in Barrie's later play, "Peter Pan, or The Boy Who Wouldn't Grow Up" (1904) and the novel "Peter and Wendy" (1911)."The Little White Bird" is notable for introducing the character and concept of Peter Pan, who would go on to become one of the most beloved figures in children's literature. The book's whimsical and imaginative portrayal of childhood adventures and the magical world of Kensington Gardens laid the foundation for Barrie's later Peter Pan stories. While "The Little White Bird" is not as well-known as Barrie's later Peter Pan works, it is a significant part of the Peter Pan mythos and provides valuable insight into the development of the character and the imaginative world he inhabits.

Recent Studies Indicate The Best of Sarah Bird【電子書籍】[ Sarah Bird ]

"These essays are a pleasure; Bird makes her readers feel smart, urbane, and in on the joke, and that their own stories are worth sharing too." ー Publishers Weekly

When Sarah Bird arrived in Austin in 1973 in pursuit of a boyfriend who was "hotter than lava," she found an abundance of storytelling inspiration (for example, her sweetheart left her for Scientology, but she got to taste a morsel of Lynda Bird Johnson's poorly preserved wedding cake as a temp worker at the LBJ Library). She went on to write ten acclaimed novels and hundreds of articles, developing a signature voice that combines laser-sharp insight with irreverent, wickedly funny prose in the tradition of Molly Ivins and Nora Ephron.
Now collecting forty of Bird's best nonfiction pieces, from publications that range from Texas Monthly to the New York Times and beyond, Recent Studies Indicate presents some of her earliest work, including a prescient 1976 profile of a transgender woman, along with recent calls to political action, such as her 2017 speech at a benefit for Annie's List.
Whether Bird is hanging out with socialites and sanitation workers or paying homage to her army-nurse mom, her collection brings a poignant perspective to the experience of being a woman, a feminist, a mother, and a Texanーand a teller of spectacular true stories.

"Delightful . . . You can open the book to just about any story and enjoy a few minutes of good reading and, more likely than not, a hearty laugh." ー Abilene Reporter-News

"Lively, honest . . . The Red Bird's Song【電子書籍】[ Sandy Tippett-Smith ]

A young adult /adult fiction that is told from a young girls perspective and imagination that takes us away on an unforgettable journey. It weaves two stories, one of a family's experience with keeping a loved one in their home while moving through the dying process with the help of Hospice. It is also a story of a Grandmother and her grand-daughters journey into another world where birds are their twin souls who journey with them throughout life in so many subtle ways.

I am really excited about this story and feel it came from my heart with the hope it can find a place of healing for anyone going through the loss of a loved one. However, it focuses on a child's interpretation that brings an element of fantasy and adventure into their journey into life's final months.

It is also written as a resource to how Hospice Care can help a whole new way of experiencing the dying and letting go process of our beloveds with dignity. It also gives a great deal of honor to birds with both a scientific as well as symbolic information about these particular characters, who as I said before are twin souls, our reflections.

The book has been a collaborative effort by my niece, who has beautifully illustrated the story, my mothers own enthusiasm and her great desire that we create this story, and my burning desire to put this story to page. Life and Death is our whole journey and this book intends to express the joy and the sorrow that weave together to make our lives worthy of celebration from start to finish.

Research Is a Passion With Me The Autobiography of a Bird Lover【電子書籍】[ Margaret Morse Nice ]

In her incredibly productive lifetime (1883-1974), American-born ornithologist Margaret Morse Nice earned the admiration of ornithologists and naturalists in far distant lands.

Research Is a Passion With Me is an enthralling autobiography of one of the great individuals in her field and of her time. The prominent California nature writer, Donald Peattie, in commenting on Margaret Nice’s writing ability, stated: "Your art of telling is so good that it conceals how good the science is." And Professor Ernst Mayer of Harvard University said: "Margaret Nice was a remarkable person and only those who know the state of American ornithology when she started her work will appreciate her contribution."

"An extraordinary bird watcher. Every summer she and her husband would gather the girls, pack their old car with camping gear, and head off into the wilds to look for new birds. This eccentric way of living was unusual in the early 1920s, but even their youngest daughter adjusted to it. Their older girls shinnied up trees to observe nests and helped in housekeeping tasks around the campsite."

- Marcia Bonta, Bird Watcher’s Digest

Bird School A Beginner in the Wood【電子書籍】[ Adam Nicolson ]

‘A feast for mind and soul, a treasure trove of insights into the enigmatic and enchanting world of the birds we share our lives with but barely notice. I have learnt so much. Every page is a thrill. Bird School has opened my eyes' Isabella Tree, author of Wilding

Step into the hide for a glorious new encounter with the British wild

Close to Adam Nicolson’s home in Sussex, there is a forgotten field overrun by bracken and thicketed by brambles. It is the haunt of deer and many birds ? nightingales, the occasional cuckoo, ravens, robins, owls and in summer the sweet-singing warblers that come north from Africa to breed in English woods.

This gorgeous book charts his attempt to encounter birds, to engage with a marvellous layer of life he had previously almost ignored. He wanted to look and listen, to return to ‘bird school’ and see what it might teach him.

He built a small shed amongst the trees with nesting boxes and bird feeders. Cocooned inside, season after season, he got to know the birds: where they nest, how they sing, how they mate and fight, what preys on them, what they are like as living things.

Beautifully written and woven through with philosophy, literature, science and a sense of wonder, always conscious that that this is an age in which the natural world is under siege, Bird School pulls back the curtain on seemingly ordinary birds, taking a long, careful and concerned look at our relationship with the wild.

**'Golden threads of literary, philosophical and scientific insight run through Nicolson’s book, along with a sense that we are embarking on an adventure with him into a realm that we cannot hope to fully understand' THE TIMES

'A worthy addition to a literary lineage that stretches back to the 18th-century writer and naturalist Gilbert White…Bird School, then, is a fitting title: we should learn to rekindle our enduring love affair with birds, before they vanish from our sight' DAILY TELEGRAPH

The World Is a Bird in Cage【電子書籍】[ Leon Tuam ]

In 2009 when Leon Tuam's book Dieu Pleure aux Pieds de L'Homme was published, one of his best friends after congratulating him on the book added, "I hope your next publication is a novel or an essay... because poetry has lost readers' favor." Ah, no! the world (this caged bird) needs the poetry's saw and soothing balm. In these days, poetry must become the cherished child of the literature. Injustice, discrimination, selfishness and hate in our societies keep growing veiling often their faces with charming masks; conflicts, violence of words, wars and destruction are strong still. The readers of The World is a Bird in Cage will understand the uselessness of all these practices and will urgently make the right decision for the world. Most of the readers of this book will never be the same persons after reading it through. Thats what this book is indeed about. When the poets' nets dont stop those enemies of mankinds blooming and safety, later on, people always bury them using poetical implements around the tables. Always through a poetical language can true love, praises and pains be notably expressed; only through it can a culture be significantly celebrated. That's what this book is partly about. Poetry is love; poetry is peace that at times uses tough words in search of a lasting solution to problems. Poetry is powerful, and nothing can kill it. Poetry is a river amid the desert where, even the most arrogant of animals bends and quenches its thirst at the end of the day. About the author: Leon Tuam was born in Cameroon in a very large family. He loved the farm activities as his parents. From 1984 until 1991 he was seller of used books after the classes or before; and during the vacations he used to go to different weekly open-air markets to sell books. After a degree in Humanities at Lyce Classique de Bafoussam in 1989, he studied at the University of Yaound, Cameroon from 1989 until 1993; University of Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso 1993-1995; University of Bnin, Togo 1995-1998. He moved to the USA in 1998. Leon Tuam is a former student leader, Human Rights activist and author of seven books in English and French; he is professor of Spanish and French and currently lives in Massachusetts, USA.

There is a placeーa worldーwhere famine and poverty do not exist.
Nor sickness nor misery nor unhappiness of any kind.
Is it Heaven?
As two brothers are about to discover,
it's more like Hell.
Michael Glynn is a hotshot director addicted to a there's-no-success-like-excess hedonism. Daniel Glynn is a professor of literature, devoted husband, and doting father with a quietly buttoned-down life. Brothers bound by blood. But brothers waging a private civil warーan emotional feud of lies and deceit and dark secrets buried but not forgotten.
But all that is about to change.
One day the brothers are visited simultaneously by gun-wielding strangers claiming to be agents of an elite government security agency. Each brother is questioned about the whereabouts of the other. What they want is "the code." The strangers are convinced one of the brothers possesses the code, but they aren't sure which. Having maintained only sporadic contact, Michael and Daniel can be of no assistance. Or so they think. The strangers will not take no for an answer. Their instructions are simple: find your brother or die.
But what begins as a cross-country manhuntーbrother converging on brotherーturns into an odyssey of discovery neither could have imagined. It is a journey that will take them to a world of perfect human happiness. A world purged of suffering. A world without death. A world where a life can be relived and mistakes corrected.
Both have been given a second chance. The question is, is a second chance what they really need?
For Michael and Daniel the answer to that question will be found by unraveling the mystery of the impossible bird.
At the Publisher's request, this title is being sold without Digital Rights Management Software (DRM) applied.

Beyond the antislavery haven Slavery in early Canadian print culture, 1789?1889【電子書籍】[ Ellie Bird ]

This book challenges the idealised narrative of Canada as an antislavery haven for self-liberated people to explore Canada’s complicated relationship with slavery. Examining advertisements, abolitionist texts and narratives about slavery in Canadian newspapers and the texts that were printed alongside them, it shows how Canadian readers and enslavers developed an image of themselves as belonging to an antislavery community even while recognising their own complicity in slavery. The book explores narratives that depict the lives of Black settlers in Canada and how slave narratives circulated in Canada. Canada’s relationship with slavery is far more complicated than seeing it as either an antislavery haven or a slaveholding space. Canada was connected to Britain, France, the Caribbean and the United States and this was central to how Canadians and Canadian readers fashioned their self-image in relation to slavery.

The Punishment of the Stingy【電子書籍】[ George Bird Grinnell ]

The Punishment of the Stingy, first published in 1901, has become a classic of American Indian literature. George Bird Grinnell's retelling of Indian tales like "The Star Boy," "The Girl Who Was the Ring," "The First Medicine Lodge," and "Nothing Child" retains the humor and mystery of their sources. Featuring the twin themes of generosity and stinginess, this is the only one of Grinnell's collections to embrace narratives from a number of tribes--Blackfoot, Pawnee, Blood, Piegan, and Chinook. Plucky young heroes emerge from obscurity through their generosity; the closefisted draw down supernatural punishments befitting their cold and hardened spirits. Jarold Ramsey writes, "The history of the Plains Indians as we have it would be unthinkable without the keen eye and honest, diligent pen of George Bird Grinnell. With him, it is still possible after eighty or one hundred years to leap through that historical lightning door that shut so suddenly on the Old West. Among the heroic Pawnees, Cheyennes, Blackfeet, and their neighbors of long ago, stories like these will continue to be our horses, and Grinnell our faithful overland guide."
