A Lady's Life in the Rocky Mountains【電子書籍】[ Isabella Bird ]
|

A Lady's Life in the Rocky Mountains is a travel book, by Isabella Bird, describing her 1873 trip to the Rocky Mountains of Colorado. The book is a compilation of letters that Isabella Bird wrote to her sister, Henrietta. In 1872, Isabella left Britain, going first to Australia, then to Hawaii, which she refers to as the Sandwich Islands. In 1873 she travelled to Colorado, then the Colorado Territory. After living a time in Hawaii, she takes a boat, to San Francisco. She passed the area of Lake Tahoe, to Cheyenne, Wyoming, to ultimate Estes Park, Colorado, also elsewhere in and near the Rocky Mountains of the Colorado Territory. Early in Colorado, she met Rocky Mountain Jim, described as a desperado, but with whom she got along quite well. She described him as, "He is a man whom any woman might love but no sane woman would marry." She was the first white woman to stand atop Longs Peak, Colorado, pointing out that Jim "dragged me up, like a bale of goods, by sheer force of muscle." Rocky Mountain Jim treated her quite well, and it is sad to note, he was shot to death, seven months later. After many other adventures, Isabella Bird ultimately took a train, east. Upon publication, A Lady's Life in the Rocky Mountains proved an "instant bestseller" and is still considered to be her best work.

The Bird【電子書籍】[ Jules Michelet ]
|

In "The Bird," Jules Michelet embarks on a lyrical exploration of avian life that transcends mere natural observation, immersing readers in the interconnectedness of nature and humanity. Written in the mid-19th century, the book reflects the Romantic literary style, characterized by vivid imagery and an emotional connection to the subject matter. Michelet employs an almost poetic prose, weaving together scientific observations with philosophical musings, ultimately revealing his reverence for birds as symbols of freedom and inspiration amidst the industrial age's encroachments on nature. The work stands as a testament to the burgeoning interest in biology and environment during the Enlightenment period, positioning birds as integral elements of the ecosystem worthy of admiration and protection. Jules Michelet (1798-1874), a prominent French historian and naturalist, is often noted for his passionate engagement with the natural world and its historical context. His background in history, combined with his fascination for nature, led him to reconcile the scientific and the spiritual in his writing. This duality is evident in "The Bird," where his admiration for the natural world is steeped in a historical narrative that reveals both human and avian evolution, reflecting the interconnectedness of all living things. For readers seeking a unique blend of nature writing and historical insight, "The Bird" offers a captivating journey into the world of birds, encouraging a deeper appreciation of their role in our lives and the environment. Michelet's evocative prose invites both ornithologists and casual readers alike to reflect on the beauty of nature and the urgency of its preservation. This work is essential reading for anyone interested in the intersections of literature, nature, and history.

**SHORTLISTED FOR THE INTERNATIONAL BOOKER PRIZE

From one of Japan's most brilliant and sensitive contemporary novelists, this speculative fiction masterpiece envisions an Earth where humans are nearing extinction, and rewrites our understanding of reproduction, ecology, evolution, artificial intelligence, communal life, creation, love, and the future of humanity**

In the distant future, humans are on the verge of extinction and have settled in small tribes across the planet under the observation and care of "Mothers." Some children are made in factories, from cells of rabbits and dolphins; some live by getting nutrients from water and light, like plants. The survival of the race depends on the interbreeding of these and other alien beings--but it is far from certain that connection, love, reproduction, and evolution will persist among the inhabitants of this faltering new world.

Unfolding over fourteen interconnected episodes spanning geological eons, at once technical and pastoral, mournful and utopic, Under the Eye of the Big Bird presents an astonishing vision of the end of our species as we know it.

The Bird of Time【電子書籍】[ Sarojini Naidu ]

In "The Bird of Time," Sarojini Naidu masterfully weaves a tapestry of lyrical verse that captures the essence of Indian culture and the universal human experience. This evocative collection, largely composed during the early 20th century, showcases Naidu's unique ability to blend Indian themes with Western literary forms, further enriched by her adept use of natural imagery and musical rhythm. The poems reflect a deep appreciation for nature and love, while also addressing social issues, a characteristic of Naidu's broader literary context, which sought to illuminate the struggles and aspirations of her time. Sarojini Naidu, often hailed as the "Nightingale of India," was a prominent freedom fighter, poet, and first female governor in independent India. Born in 1879 to a progressive family, her multifaceted background in art and politics undeniably influenced her writing. Naidu's experiences abroad and her position within the Indian independence movement provided her with a keen insight into the interplay of cultural identity and political consciousness, both of which resonate throughout her poetry. Readers seeking a rich, sensory exploration of love, nature, and national identity will find "The Bird of Time" an essential addition to their literary journey. Naidu's eloquence invites readers into a world where beauty meets social consciousness, making this collection not only a tribute to her heritage but also a timeless reflection on the human spirit.

Here is a book as joyous and painful, as mysterious and memorable, as childhood itself. I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings captures the longing of lonely children, the brute insult of bigotry, and the wonder of words that can make the world right. Maya Angelou’s debut memoir is a modern American classic beloved worldwide.

Sent by their mother to live with their devout, self-sufficient grandmother in a small Southern town, Maya and her brother, Bailey, endure the ache of abandonment and the prejudice of the local “powhitetrash.” At eight years old and back at her mother’s side in St. Louis, Maya is attacked by a man many times her ageーand has to live with the consequences for a lifetime. Years later, in San Francisco, Maya learns that love for herself, the kindness of others, her own strong spirit, and the ideas of great authors (“I met and fell in love with William Shakespeare”) will allow her to be free instead of imprisoned.

Poetic and powerful, I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings will touch hearts and change minds for as long as people read.

“I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings liberates the reader into life simply because Maya Angelou confronts her own life with such a moving wonder, such a luminous dignity.”ーJames Baldwin
