Getting tangled up in fantasies about some man Joy saw maybe five or six times a year was ridiculous.

And it wasn't like Gray ever encouraged her. He remembered her name. But that was as far as it ever got. Well, except in her dreams. In real life, however, the attraction was totally one-sided. Or so she thought. Joy couldn't believe it when her daydreams about Grayson Bennett, political consultant and heartthrob extraordinaire, seemed poised to become reality.

When he noticed her?really noticed her. When he gazed at her with the same desire he'd inspired in her for years. But was sweet, small-town Joy a match for arrogant, big-city Gray, ruthless about all things?except opening his heart?

The Bird Room【電子書籍】[ Chad Hofmann ]

Eli threw open the door and stood shocked. Behind the door Eli saw two men. One was in a bathtub with red ice surrounding his blue body, and beside him a man was sitting on a stool next to a table. The table had many brownish-red lumps piled in a bloody heap, and on top of the pile was the distinct shape of a human tongue. The man sitting next to the bathtub turned and looked at Eli, his eyes were sunken and he had patches of missing hair where it had been pulled out. His lips parted in a crazy smile revealing a large number of broken teeth, and he pointed the scalpel he held in his blood-covered hand at Eli. “It’s too late for him too,” said the man in a high-pitched voice, drooling in anticipation, like a dog with a bone. Eli stood frozen, his brain issued a hundred different commands that his body would not obey. The man let out bone chilling cackle and, with lightning quickness, sunk the blade of the scalpel into Eli’s left thigh. The pain hit Eli like a train and he was instantly brought back to reality. He looked over at the parrot, who was now calm and quiet. Its mysterious gray eyes connected with Eli’s, and he felt as if the bird was staring into his soul. Eli turned and ran through the open door as fast as his pain infused leg would let him; he got into his room and threw the door closed behind him. Frantic, Eli looked around the room and went to the dresser, he pushed the large chest of drawers in front of the bedroom door and fell to the floor next to his bed. -Excerpt, The Bird Room

J M Barrie - The Little White Bird【電子書籍】[ JM Barrie ]

J.M. Barries novel, The Little White Bird, combines fantastic and humorous happenings with social comedy. It represents the foundational work of what has now become a whole mythology established around the fictional character of Peter Pan. The different chapters differ in tone and in the degree of seriousness and intensity. The chapters featuring Peter pan are set in Londons famous Kensington Gardens of which they provide minute descriptions. When the gardens are closed to the public by the end of the day, supernatural beings such as fairies get out of their hiding places to roam in the park. The other chapters of the novel are generally set in the city of London. Among the most memorable characters of The Little White Bird, one can mention Captain W who is also the narrator of story, the little child David who takes part in the story before he was even born, and, of course, Peter pan, the strange young boy with magical powers who has many things in common with the fairies. The Peter Pan mythology is mainly based on the strange happenings and the eccentric celebrations and habits which are depicted in this book.

After the euphoria of meeting Erno Rubik, the inventor of the Rubik’s cube, the protagonist becomes captivated by the idea of finding symmetry in his life, much like he finds in the cube. What begins as fascination gradually intensifies into obsession, driving him to seek symmetry in everything he does: from personal relationships to an intricate mathematical equation that he believes holds the key to understanding his life’s biggest mystery. He becomes fixated on solving the equation, which, if balanced perfectly, could redefine humanity’s understanding of its place in the universe.

However, this uncompromising demand for flawlessness begins to unravel its true self. The protagonist’s relationships start to fracture, and he loses sight of the things that once mattered to him.

At his lowest point, the protagonist comes across an epiphany, left to him by his mentor, where the cryptic phrase “Eye of the Bird” is inscribed. To find peace, he must uncover the significance of these words and determine whether his pursuit of symmetry is worth the cost or if embracing life’s inherent chaos is the path to his salvation.

Bird Songs Don't Lie Writings from the Rez【電子書籍】[ Gordon Lee Johnson ]

In this collection of essays and short stories, the Native American author explores reservation life through a range of genres and perspectives.
In this moving collection, Gordon Lee Johnson (Cupe?o/Cahuilla) distinguishes himself not only as a wry commentator on American Indian reservation life but also as a master of fiction writing. In Johnson's stories, all of which are set on the fictional San Ignacio reservation in Southern California, we meet unforgettable characters like Plato Pena, the Stanford-bound geek who reads Kahlil Gibran during intertribal softball games; hardboiled investigator Roddy Foo; and Etta, whose motto is "early to bed, early to rise, work like hell, and advertise," as they face down circumstances by turns ordinary and devastating.
The nonfiction featured in Bird Songs Don't Lie is equally revelatory in its exploration of complex connections between past and present. Whether examining his own conflicted feelings toward the missions as a source of both cultural damage and identity or sharing advice for cooking for eight dozen cowboys and -girls, Johnson plumbs the comedy, catastrophe, and beauty of his life on the Pala Reservation to thunderous effect.

The Yellow Bird Sings A Novel【電子書籍】[ Jennifer Rosner ]

"An absolutely beautiful and necessary novel full of heartbreak but also hope, about the bond between mother and daughter, and . . . sacrifices made for love." ー New York Times
In Poland, as World War II rages, a mother hides with her young daughter, a musical prodigy whose slightest sound may cost them their lives.
As Nazi soldiers round up the Jews in their town, R?za and her five-year-old daughter, Shira, seek shelter in a neighbor's barn. Hidden in the hayloft day and night, Shira struggles to stay still and quiet, as music pulses through her and the farmyard outside beckons. To soothe her daughter and pass the time, R?za tells her a story about a girl in an enchanted garden:
The girl is forbidden from making a sound, so the yellow bird sings. He sings whatever the girl composes in her head: high-pitched trills of piccolo; low-throated growls of contrabassoon. Music helps the flowers bloom.
In this make-believe world, R?za can shield Shira from the horrors that surround them. But the day comes when their haven is no longer safe and R?za must make a choice: whether to keep Shira by her side or give her the chance to survive apart.
Inspired by the true stories of Jewish children hidden during the war, Jennifer Rosner's debut is a breathtaking novel about the unbreakable bond between a mother and a daughter.
"Stunning." ー Booklist
"Rosner's understanding of how art plays a role in our lives, even at the worst of times, is impressive." ー Kirkus Reviews
"A wrenching chronicle." ー Publishers Weekly
"Gripping, heartrending, and so very real." ーLisa Wingate, #1 New York Times?bestselling author of Before We Were Yours

The Life and Travels of Isabella Bird The Fearless Victorian Adventurer【電子書籍】[ Jacki Hill-Murphy ]

A biography of a tenacious Englishwoman who defied Victorian-era societal expectations and sought adventure around the world.
Isabella Bird traveled to the wildest places on earth, but at home in Britain she lay in bed, hardly able to write: 'an invalid at home and a Samson abroad.'
In Japan she rode on a 'yezo savage' through foaming floods along unbeaten tracks, and was followed in the city by a crowd of a thousand, whose clogs clattered 'like a hailstorm' as they vied for a glimpse of the foreigner. She documented America before and after the Civil War and was deported from Korea with only the tweed suit she stood up in during a Japanese invasion. In China she was attacked with rocks and sticks and called a foreign dog, but she never gave up and went home. 'The prospect of the unknown has its charms.'
Transformed by distant lands, she crossed raging floods, rode elephants, cows, and yak, clung to her horse's neck as it clambered down cliff paths, slept on simple mats on the bare ground, unable to change out of wet clothes or get out of the searing heat.
Her travels and the books she wrote about them show courage and tenacity, fueled by a restless spirit and a love of nature. She is as unique now as she was then.

The Strange Courtship of Abigail Bird【電子書籍】[ John Blumenthal ]

Beset by awkward interpersonal skills, an obsession with classic literature and the somewhat archaic speaking style of a Jane Austen character, Ishmael Archer seems destined for the lonely life of a literature professor at the academic backwater of Longfellow College. While he yearns for female companionship, he has been left in emotional and financial disarray after his recent divorce. Struggling to pay his rent and trading in his car for a rickety bicycle, Ishmael Archer is obliged to undertake his most dreaded task: teach a summer creative writing class. Convinced that he will be saddled with a group of student malcontents who care not a whit for Tolstoy or Dickens, Ishmael is delighted to encounter the luminescent Abigail Bird, whose passion for literature equals his own. Their burgeoning romance is cut abruptly short when Abigail suffers a traumatic head wound and falls into a coma. Distraught, Ishmael reads the unconscious Abigail passages from her most cherished novels. When she finally awakes, however, Abigail is inexplicably changed and Ishmael must find a way to connect with the Abigail Bird with whom he had fallen in love.
Peppered with an enthralling cast of charactersーa college dean obsessed with orchids, a Greek landlord who possesses a tendency to break into dance, and a self-important writer who vies with Archer for Abigail's affectionsー The Strange Courtship of Abigail Bird is a heart-warming tale of love, loss, and rediscovery.

Beyond the Old Frontier - Adventures of Indian-Fighters, Hunters, and Fur-Traders【電子書籍】[ George Bird Grinnell ]

To-day the vast territory lying between the Mississippi River and the Pacific Ocean is occupied by many millions of people. Fifty years ago, except on the Pacific slope, it had few white inhabitants. Then it was the Far West, beyond the frontier, the Indian countryーthe unknown. A journey into it was believed to be full of peril. In the minds of the general public it was as far away as Central China is to-day. Beyond the great river which bounded it on the east was a fringe of settlements. Scattered through the more distant country were the trading-posts to which the trapper brought his furs. Forts Garry, Benton, Union, Laramie, Bridger, and Bent were some of these. There were a few army posts, and as time went on others were established. Gold had been discovered in California, and a wild rush of people anxious to better their condition had started across the plains, bound for the distant Eldorado. It was a curiously mixed population that set out on this long journey. Farmers from New England, business men and clerks from the Middle States, planters and younger sons from the South; on foot and on horseback, carrying their possessions, large or scanty, in vehicles drawn by horses, mules, oxen, and cows, they struggled westward. They endured enormous toils; perpetually in fear of attacks by Indians, meetingvi the dangers, delays, and perplexities of wild men, strange surroundings, rough travelling, swollen streams, and exhausted live-stock. For many years the roads over which they had passed were marked by the skeletons of animals, by broken-down wagons, by furniture and household goods, thrown away to lighten the loads dragged by their feeble teams. Along these deep-worn roads were the graves of those who had perished on the way; sometimes mere mounds of earth, hardly showing on the level prairie, or perhaps marked by a bit of board thrust in the ground, bearing a pencilled name and date, which the winter's storms would soon obliterate.

This concoction of stories come to light when two brothers find them in a trunk in the attic. One of the brothers, Plug, writes a “cover” letter to some unknown, un-named man. The cover letter is attached to a bundle of letters written to a Mrs. Ainsworth by a man named Chuck. A beggar-man somehow comes into passion of the letters and sells them to this author for $1. Each letter centers about a man with a questionable occupation (an office in town, money to gad about, married or bachelor, and lives in what era)? Those questions go unanswered; and who is Mrs. Ainsworth (his aunt, sister, friend?) With a few exceptions, each story is a tale unto itself and mostly in or about Wetowannabee a town in upstate that is not listed on modern maps or in past land records. The man, simply known as Chuck, writes letters to Mrs. Ainsworth, each letter contains a story about an incident that he heard about or observed or that someone else has written. He takes no blame or credit for the story. Some letters are merely his observations on a specific condition of life or after life.

Sunday Forrester does things more carefully than most people. On certain days, she must eat only white food; she drinks only carbonated beverages; she avoids clocks. It's 1988, before autism was widely diagnosed. Sunday has an old etiquette handbook that guides her through confusing social situations, and to escape, she turns to her treasury of Sicilian folklore. The one thing very much out of her control is Dolly, her clever, headstrong teenage daughter, now on the cusp of leaving their home in the Lake District of England. When the glamourous Vita and Rollo move in next door, the couple disarm Sunday with their charm, and proceed to deliciously break just about every rule in Sunday's book. Soon they are spending loads of time together, and Sunday feels acknowledged like never before. But underneath Vita and Rollo's allure lies something else, something darker. For Sunday has precisely what Vita has always wanted for herself: a daughter of her own. A page-turning psychological drama, All the Little Bird-Hearts is an extraordinary, often witty glimpse into the mind of an autistic woman─and a remarkable debut by an author who is herself autistic. It is also an astute portrait of a woman coming to terms with the meaning of love, of motherhood, and of authenticity, and a poignant reminder about why accepting ourselves can be so freeing.

The Wreck of the Red Bird: A Story of the Carolina Coast【電子書籍】[ George Cary Eggleston ]

It was no sooner said than done. Standing at less than twenty feet distance, the boys threw one club each at the intruder, and then, snatching other clubs, one in each hand, rushed upon him. Rising, he knocked Jack down, but was brought to his own knees by Charley's club. At that moment the man's dog, a surly-looking brute, seized Charley, and it required the combined efforts of all three boysーfor Jack was up again in an instantーto beat the creature off. While they were engaged in this, the dog's master, finding himself outnumbered and overmatched, took to his heels and the camp was clear, for the dog quickly followed, howling with pain. "Are you much hurt, Charley?" was the first question asked when the enemy's retreat left the boys free to think of themselves. "I'm pretty severely bitten," was the reply, "but luckily it's in the fleshy part of my thigh, and the flesh isn't torn. One of you must have struck very quickly, or I shouldn't have got off so easily. See," he continued, when the fire had been stirred into a blaze, "the brute buried his teeth, but let go again without shaking me." "Yes, I saw him jump at you, and tried to hit him before he got hold," said Ned. "I must have struck him just as he seized youーhalf a second too late to save you entirely, but I hit him fairly on the head." "And he had to let go of me to howl," said Charley, who, in spite of his pain, was in good spirits after the exciting encounter. "By the way, are you hurt, Jack?" "I've an earache," said Jack, turning his head and showing an inflamed and swollen ear; "but I'm glad that fellow didn't hit me fairly in the face, as he meant to do. It would have settled the question of photographs for me for all time, I think. Why, if I had caught that blow on the face my nose would have been distributed over the rest of my countenance as evenly as his is."
