Love is for the weak of mind.

Astra is queen of the Companion world. She has been at the king’s side for ten years, but his interest is waning. If she can just hold on a little longer, she will take her rightful place as mentor and never share a man’s bed again. But a single game of cards threatens to bring her future to ruins. The king’s wager is a brutal reminder that she is replaceable, disposableーa prize to be won. Now she must find a way to survive outside the castle until she can find a way back inside its walls.

Dion is captain of the Galen army, a soldier, a humanitarianーand possibly a traitor. He does not believe in people as property, so the concept of a Companion is confronting. Mistress or slave? He cannot decide. The king’s Companion seems content enough with her eternal smile and ability to command a room with just a tilt of her head and flash of blue eyes, but he sees past the painted face and rehearsed laughter. She is broken. She is fire. And a game of cards later, she is entirely his problem.

This is book five in The Companion series. If you enjoy a moving love story set in a medieval world, then you will love The Captain’s Prize.

Trigger warning: This book contains violence and dark themes.

The Little White Bird: or Adventures In Kensington Gardens (Annotated)【電子書籍】[ J.M. Barrie ]

The Little White Bird is a British book by J. M. Barrie, ranging in tone from fantasy and whimsy to social comedy with dark, aggressive undertones. It was published in November 1902 by Hodder & Stoughton in the UK and Scribner's in the US, although the latter had released it serially in the monthly Scribner's Magazine from August to November. The book attained prominence and longevity thanks to several chapters written in a softer tone than the rest of the book, which introduced the character and mythology of Peter Pan. In 1906 those chapters were published separately as a children's book, Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens. The Peter Pan story began as one chapter and grew to an "elaborate book-within-a-book" of more than one hundred pages during the four years Barrie worked on The Little White Bird.
This edition has been formatted for your reader, with an active table of contents. It has also been annotated, with additional information about the book and its author, including an overview, plot introduction, plot summary, major themes, literary significance, information about Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens, biographical and bibliographical information.

For Want of Wings A Bird with Teeth and a Dinosaur in the Family【電子書籍】[ Jill Hunting ]

In 1872, a young graduate of Yale University named Thomas Russell unearthed the bones of an 83,000,000-year-old dinosaur in western Kansas. The rare fossil, an avian dinosaur with teeth and flightless wings, proved that birds evolved from reptiles. More than a century later, Russell’s great-granddaughter set out to retrace her ancestor’s forgotten expedition. Part detective history, part memoir, For Want of Wings is Jill Hunting’s captivating account of her journey into prehistory, national history, and family history.

In her quest to piece together fragments of her family’s past, Hunting ends up crisscrossing the United States, from California to Connecticut. On her first trip across the Colorado Rockies to the fossil bed site near Russell Springs, Kansas, Hunting brings along her then twenty-six-year-old daughter. When the book opens, mother and daughter are both at crossroads, each seeking to understand the impact of personal decisions on the landscape of her life.

As Hunting ventures forward, she encounters unexpected resources, such as ten-year-old triplets who converse with her about dinosaurs and a Connecticut museum where portraits of her ancestors hang on the walls. Through lively descriptions of these visits, Hunting advances a view of history as nonlinear and full of unlikely coincidences.

For Want of Wings is also the carefully researched story of the least known of Yale’s four expeditions into the American West, led by eminent paleontologist O. C. Marsh; the friendship between Russell’s father and abolitionist John Brown; a portrait of a mother and daughter evolving in self-understanding; and an inquiry into matters of race in American history and the author’s own family. In the end, all these pieces converge, like fragments of a fossil, to form an exquisitely patterned work of historical exploration.

The Blue Bird for Children - Wonderful Adventures of f Happiness【電子書籍】[ Georgette Leblanc Maurice Maeterlinck ]

One of the strongest pieces of imaginative writing for children that the past decade has produced and one of the most delicate and beautiful of all times, is "The Blue Bird," by Maurice Maeterlinck, written as a play, and very successfully produced on the stage. Georgette Leblanc (Madame Maurice Maeterlinck), has rendered this play in story form for children, under the title "The Children's Blue Bird," and in this form it has now been carefully edited and arranged for schools. Maurice Maeterlinck was born in Ghent, Belgium, August 29, 1862. Although trained for the practice of the law and moderately successful in it, he very early became dissatisfied with the prospect of a career at the bar. In 1887, the young man moved to Paris and turned his attention to writing. Shortly after, at the death of his father, Maeterlinck returned to Belgium where he has since resided most of the time. His career as an author practically began in 1889, when he published two plays. At this time he was quite unknown, except to a small circle, but soon, because of his remarkable originality, we find him being called "The Belgian Shakespeare," and his reputation firmly established. Amidst his Belgian roses he continued to work and dream, and upon his youthful dreams he built his plays. They are all shadowy, brief transcripts of emotion, and illustrate beautifully his unity of purpose, of mood and of thought. Whether in philosophy, drama or poetry, Maeterlinck is exclusively occupied in revealing or indicating the mystery which lies only just out of sight beneath the ordinary life. In order to produce this effect of the mysterious he aims at extreme simplicity of style and a very realistic symbolism. He allows life itself to astonish us by its strangeness, by its inexplicable elements. Many of his plays are really pathetic records of unseen emotions.

In Spring Green, Wisconsin, spinster sisters Milly and Twiss have spent their lives listening to heartbeats and heartaches, nursing birds and the people who bring them back to health.

Back in the summer of 1947, Milly and Twiss knew nothing about trying to mend what had been accidentally broken. Milly was known as a great beauty with emerald eyes and Twiss was a brazen wild child who never wore a dress or did what she was told. That was the summer their golf pro father had an accident that cost him both his swing and his charm, and their mother, the daughter of a wealthy jeweler, finally admitted that their hardscrabble lives wouldn't change. It was the summer their priest, Father Rice, announced that God didn't exist and ran off to Mexico, and a boy named Asa finally caught Milly's eye. Most unforgettably, it was also the summer their cousin Bett came down from a town called Deadwater and changed the course of their lives forever.

Rebecca Rasmussen's masterful debut novel is full of hope and beauty, heartbreak and sacrifice, love and the power of sisterhood, offering wonderful surprises at every turn.

One of the best birders in England, Tom had put the village of Rushy on the birdwatching map. Everyone liked him. Or did they? George Palmer-Jones, an elderly birdwatcher who decided quietly to look into the brutal crime, discovered mixed feelings aplenty. Still, he remained baffled by a deed that could have been motivated by thwarted love, pure envy, or something else altogether. But as he and his fellow "twitchers" flocked from Norfolk to Scotland to the Scilly Isles, in response to rumors of rare sightings, George--with help from his lovely wife, Molly--gradually discerned the true markings of a killer. All he had to do was prove it . . . before the murderer strikes again.

In "The Bird in the Box," Mary M. Mears delves into the psychological and emotional complexities of confinement and freedom through the poignant metaphor of a caged bird. The narrative unfolds in a lyrical style, interweaving rich imagery with introspective prose, evoking a deep sense of longing and liberation. Mears expertly navigates themes of identity, isolation, and the innate human desire for connection, grounding her exploration in a contemporary context that resonates with readers grappling with their own personal struggles and societal constraints. Mary M. Mears, an established voice in contemporary fiction, draws upon her extensive background in psychology and social justice to craft this evocative tale. Her experiences working with marginalized communities have instilled in her a profound understanding of the nuances of the human condition, amplifying the emotional depth found within the characters of this novel. Influenced by her commitment to social themes in literature, Mears creates a space for dialogue about the constraints that society places on individuals and the hope that arises in the quest for authenticity. Carol remembered how excited Angela was the day she got the Free Bird tattoo that represented her continual search for freedom. But Angelas desire to be free had a dark side. At about age 14, she began to resist authority; she stayed out late or didnt come home at all; and, soon, she was spiraling down a path of addiction. Despite family, friends, clergy, and therapists reaching out to help Angela, she continued her desperate slide into alcohol, drugs, and eventually a life of prostitution that ended with her tragic murder at the age of nineteen. Farewell, My Free Bird is a mothers story of her daughter, Angela, and her life that was filled with turmoil before she was brutally murdered. However, it is not only a story of tragedy and loss. More importantly, it is a story of forgiveness: forgiveness made possible only by Gods faithfulness to Angela and her family. It is a testimony of how God can bring freedom for the captives; how He can heal the broken-hearted; and how He brings new life out of death. It is natural to wonder, Is God real? Does He answer prayer? Can He be trusted? Does He care about each of us and what were going through? All these questions are answered with a resounding Yes! in the pages of Farewell, My Free Bird.

What happens when two worlds collide?

This is a story about me, Clementine, and my friends: a panther called Levi, a pelican called Lola and a turtle called Jimmy. It is about dragons and goblins, my Daddy the King, my Mummy the Queen and Prince Pio my brother. At least that is the way I tell it sometimes when thoughts of the blood, the machetes, the swamp and the fear of Uncle Leonard become too hard to describe.
But that was all before I met Ashley, wonderful Ashley. Not that he would ever call himself wonderful in a million years. When he tells you his story you will see what I mean…
