Song of the Caged Bird Words as Resistance in Palestine【電子書籍】[ Marcello Di Cintio ]

For political readers and anyone invested in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, Marcello Di Cintio's Song of the Caged Bird is a refreshing look at Palestinian resistance--through literature and the power of books.

When Marcello Di Cintio began teaching at the Palestine Writing Workshop in Ramallah, he avoided making reference to the occupation in his assignments at first--to see if his students addressed it on their own--and he soon learned that it touches all aspects of Palestinian life. Curious how Palestinian literature could operate with its people so tied to a single narrative, Di Cintio began a journey through the Palestinian world of books: from the monument to the poet Mahmoud Darwish to the volumes in the Nablus Prisoners' library; from one of the West Bank's most successful bookshops to a century-old library in Jerusalem run by a family with a lineage in that city many centuries older. What he found is a world of identity and resistance that is considerably more complex--and potentially more hopeful--than what we see splashed across our screens.

Journeys in Persia and Kurdistan: Including a Summer in the Upper Karun Region and a Visit to the Nestorian Rayahs (Complete)【電子書籍】[ Isabella Lucy Bird ]

The letters of which these volumes are composed embrace the second half of journeys in the East extending over a period of two years. They attempt to be a faithful record of facts and impressions, but were necessarily written in haste at the conclusion of fatiguing marches, and often in circumstances of great discomfort and difficulty, and I relied for their correction in the event of publication on notes made with much care. Unfortunately I was robbed of nearly the whole of these, partly on my last journey in Persia and partly on the Turkish frontier,ーa serious loss, which must be my apology to the reader for errors which, without this misfortune, would not have occurred. The bibliography of Persia is a very extensive one, and it may well be that I have little that is new to communicate, except on a part of Luristan previously untraversed by Europeans; but each traveller receives a different impression from those made upon his predecessors, and I hope that my book may be accepted as an honest attempt to make a popular contribution to the sum of knowledge of a country and people with which we are likely to be brought into closer relations. As these volumes are simply travels in Persia and Eastern Asia Minor, and are not a book on either country, the references to such subjects as were not within the sphere of my observation are brief and incidental. The administration of government, the religious and legal systems, the tenure of land, and the mode of taxation are dismissed in a few lines, and social customs are only described when I came in contact with them. The Ilyats, or nomadic tribes, form a very remarkable element of the population of Persia, but I have only noticed two of their divisionsーthe Bakhtiari and Feili Lurs. The antiquities of Persia are also passed over with hardly a remark, as well as many other subjects, which have been "threshed out" by previous writers with more or less of accuracy. I make these omissions with all the more satisfaction, because most that is "knowable" concerning Persia will be accessible on the publication of a work now in the Press, Persia and the Persian Question, by the Hon. George N. Curzon, M.P., who has not only travelled extensively in the country, but has bestowed such enormous labour and research upon it, and has had such exceptional opportunities of acquiring the latest and best official information, that his volumes may fairly be described as "exhaustive." It is always a pleasant duty to acknowledge kindness, and I am deeply grateful to several friends for the help which they have given me in many ways, and for the trouble which some of them have taken to recover facts which were lost with my notes, as well as for the careful revision of a portion of my letters in MS. I am indebted to the Indian authorities for the materials for a sketch map, for photographs from which many of the illustrations are taken, and for the use of a valuable geographical report, and to Mr. Thistleton Dyer, Director of the Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew, for the identification of a few of my botanical specimens.

TALES OF SOLDIERS AND CIVILIANS (26 Stories in One eBook) Including Chickamauga, An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge, The Mocking-Bird and more【電子書籍】[ Ambrose Bierce ]

Ambrose Bierce's 'Tales of Soldiers and Civilians' is a collection of 26 short stories that offer a raw and unfiltered look at war, its brutal realities, and the impact it has on both soldiers and civilians. Written in a straightforward and sometimes satirical style, Bierce's stories provide a stark contrast to the glorified narratives often associated with war literature. Through his vivid storytelling and attention to detail, Bierce exposes the less glamorous side of war, shedding light on the harsh truths that are often overlooked. Ambrose Bierce, a veteran of the Civil War himself, draws upon his own experiences and observations to craft these poignant tales that delve deep into the psyche of those affected by conflict. His unique perspective as both a soldier and a civilian allows him to present a nuanced and thought-provoking portrayal of war that challenges traditional narratives. I highly recommend 'Tales of Soldiers and Civilians' to readers who are interested in exploring the complexities of war and its impact on individuals. Bierce's honest and sometimes dark portrayal of war offers a refreshing take on the genre, making this collection a must-read for those seeking a deeper understanding of the human experience in times of conflict.

Susan Cerulean’s memoir trains a naturalist’s eye and a daughter’s heart on the lingering death of a beloved parent from dementia. At the same time, the book explores an activist’s lifelong search to be of service to the embattled natural world. During the years she cared for her father, Cerulean also volunteered as a steward of wild shorebirds along the Florida coast. Her territory was a tiny island just south of the Apalachicola bridge where she located and protected nesting shorebirds, including least terns and American oystercatchers. I Have Been Assigned the Single Bird weaves together intimate facets of adult caregiving and the consolation of nature, detailing Cerulean’s experiences of tending to both.

The natural world is the “sustaining body” into which we are born. In similar ways, we face not only a crisis in numbers of people diagnosed with dementia but also the crisis of the human-caused degradation of the planet itself, a type of cultural dementia. With I Have Been Assigned the Single Bird, Cerulean reminds us of the loving, necessary toil of tending to one place, one bird, one being at a time.

The Bird The Life and Legacy of Mark Fidrych【電子書籍】[ Doug Wilson ]

The first biography of the eccentric Detroit Tigers pitcher, rookie All-Star starter, '70s pop icon, and first athlete on the cover of Rolling Stone.
"A well-written, definitive book about a good guy with a great story." ー The Wall Street Journal
For those who remember him, Mark Fidrych is still that player who brings a smile to your face, the irresistibly likable pitcher whose sudden rise brightened the star-spangled season of 1976 and reminded us of the pure joy of the game.
Fidrych exploded onto the national stage during the Bicentennial summer as a rookie with the Detroit Tigers. He won over fans nationwide with his wildly endearing antics. But The Bird was no mere sideshow. The nonroster invitee to spring training that year quickly emerged as one of the best pitchers in the game. Opposing teams would specifically ask the Tigers to shuffle their rotation so Fidrych would pitch in their cities. A rare player who transcended pop culture, Fidrych was named starting pitcher in the All-Star Game as a rookie and became the first athlete from a team sport to appear on the cover of Rolling Stone magazine.
Baseball researcher Doug Wilson delivers the first biography of this once-in-a-lifetime player. Through extensive interviews and meticulous research, the author recounts Fidrych's meteoric rise to the big leagues, his heartbreaking fall after injuries, his last unforgettable game during a comeback attempt in the minors and, finally, his death in a freak accident in 2009.
The Bird gives readers a long overdue look into the life of the refreshing rookie the likes of which baseball had never seen beforeーand has never seen since.
"A compassionate, engaging biography of a player whose star shone brightly if briefly." ー Booklist
"The next time the business side of the modern game gets you down, The Bird should prove the perfect antidote." ー BaseballAmerica.com

Reflecting on the impact of trauma on her memories and role as a mother, Priest intertwines past and present in a series of lyrical confessions and meditations on power and grief. In poems addressed to the nameless "pedophile," as well as a series of vignettes on everyday life ranging from subjects as varied as the preparation of breakfast to the migration of deer, she deconstructs the history of abuse spanning from childhood to her adult life in which she finds herself trapped in a relationship with a violent partner. Religious legalism and shame play a strong role in the power dynamics between perpetrator and victim. Vivid and moving, these poems offer a highly personal glimpse into the poet's journey through disempowerment and grief toward healing.

The Bird Singers How Two Boys Discovered the Magic of Birdsong【電子書籍】[ Jean Boucault ]

**“A mesmerizing tale like no other.”ーPriyanka Kumar, author of Conversations with Birds

“A beautiful book. The writing about birdsーtheir songs and sounds, what birds mean to us, the wonder and joy they evoke in usーis among the most original, insightful, and enjoyable I’ve read.”ーJames Macdonald Lockhart, author of Wild Air: In Search of Birdsong

This captivating memoir takes readers into the eccentric world of competitive bird-callingーfollowing the coming-of-age story of two boys who found their voice in the natural world.**

This captivating book brings together two birds of a feather: Jean and Johnny, boys from very different worlds growing up in a small village in France. Jean is the genteel pharmacist’s son, dressed in his Sunday best; Johnny’s father is a rough, working-class sheep herder, always with the odor of animals clinging to him. Each year, over three hundred bird species visit their village, which intersects a major migratory flyway.

The two boys’ stories converge when Jean enters a bird-calling contest. He places second, and at only eleven years old becomes a child celebrity on the bird-calling circuit. Then Johnny starts to compete as well. At the annual bird festival, both boys are standouts, and a long, admiring rivalry develops between them, eventually culminating in the European championships.

As they evolve as performers, the two boys’ identities become more distinct: Jean is soft-spoken, while Johnny likes to play to the crowd. While most of their competitors are adult men, hunters who learned to call birds for sport, the two boys are fascinated with the pure beauty of birdsong, and in trying to transcend themselves through imitating birds. Their shared passion develops into an enduring partnership as performers, and they go on to tour the world in concert as the Bird Singers.

This is a story as much about friendship as it is about birdsong. The setting is timeless and bucolic, with long walks to small village schools, games of pick-up soccer, and father-son birding trips. The chapters, which bounce back and forth between the two narrators, are woven through with descriptions of colorful characters in the bird-calling competition circuit and the kind of ornithological detail that can only come from a true passion for birds. There is poetry in the description of the different birds, from common seagulls to thrushes and bluethroats and nightingales, and something like communion in the way Jean and Johnny understand the feathered friends they imitate.

Unique, evocative, and cinematic, The Bird Singers is the story of an unlikely friendship, sparked by a desire to speak with the avian world.

Among the Tibetans Victorian Travelogue Series (Annotated)【電子書籍】[ Isabella Lucy Bird ]

At the age of 63, Isabella Lucy Bird embarked on a remarkable journey that would become the captivating narrative of 'Among the Tibetans.' Published in the late 19th century, this account chronicles her awe-inspiring and formidable voyages across the sprawling Tibetan Plateaus and the breathtaking Himalayan mountain realms. Beginning her expedition in 1889, Bird ventured into the heart of these remote lands, unveiling the mysteries of territories like Ladakh, a region steeped in Tibetan culture nestled on the borders of India.

Traversing treacherous mountain passes, some towering over 15,000 feet, Bird forged her path into the heart of Tibet, venturing through cities as storied as Lhasa and Gyantse. The sheer grandeur of the Great Himalayan Range loomed above her, dominating the high-altitude valleys and testing her physical resilience at every step. Amidst these towering peaks, she encountered a world of cultures and Buddhist heritage largely unfamiliar to the Western consciousness of her time.

With her signature poetic prose, Bird becomes an intrepid observer and chronicler, delving deep into the daily lives of secluded Tibetan villages that remained untouched by the modernizing influences of the era. Her narrative unveils the intricacies of these remote societies, drawing attention to their ancient traditions that are woven with principles of resilience and resourcefulness, essential for survival in an unforgiving landscape.

As she ventured further eastward, retracing her steps, Bird explored lesser-known corners of the Himalayas, such as Yarkand, before eventually concluding her expedition in India. Her memoir, penned with vivid detail and profound observation, introduced the mystique and enigma of Tibet and Central Asia to Western audiences. Notably, her perspective as a pioneering female explorer added a unique dimension to the exploration of one of the world's most challenging and captivating terrains.

Dissident Spirits The Post-Insular Imprint in Puerto Rican/Diasporic Literature【電子書籍】[ Nancy I. Bird-Soto ]

This book explores the post-insular imprint in Puerto Rican letters through a sample of authors from the island and the diaspora. From a canonical figure like Alejandro Tapia to the post-Nuyorican poet V?ctor Hern?ndez Cruz, and from the working-class feminism of Luisa Capetillo and Franca de Armi?o to Virginia S?nchez Korrol’s narrative homage to the legacy of Emilia Casanova, trends such as dissidence and migration are core to the understanding of the Puerto Rican and its diasporic experiences. In Tapia’s case, his P?stumo saga offers a transmigrated subject who questions the gender binary. Regarding Capetillo and Armi?o, a sample of their plays shows not only a global awareness, but also the intersection between class and gender issues to challenge patriarchal constraints. A related intersection, the one between gender and racial matters, is key in Casanova’s understanding of freedom and the pan-Antillean consciousness that Boricua historian S?nchez Korrol underscores in her novel about the Cuban activist. To conclude this examination of the post-insular imprint in works by authors in diverse canons and working in different genres, the closing chapter is dedicated to Hern?ndez Cruz’s poetry as an unequivocal celebration of the migratory experience of the Caribbean. These writers, thus, emerge as migrants of the word in a spirit of dissidence against colonialist notions of Puerto Rico, its diaspora, and the Caribbean.

Not content to simply entertain the literati surrounding her husband George Putnam's publishing empire and raise their two sons, she pursued her own interests and adventures. A talented singer and pianist, a spirited athletic naturalist, and an explorer who joined expeditions to the Gal?pagos Islands with William Beede and Greenland with Robert Bartlett, Dorothy challenged herself as much as she challenged societal expectations for women.

Then she met Amelia Earhart. The fearless aviatrix, whose exploits and accomplishments shattered gender boundaries and championed women's rights, became Dorothy's inspiration, kindred spirit, and close friend. But Dorothy's husband George, already enamored with air travel having published the writings of Charles Lindbergh, admired and adored Amelia as more than a friend.

In Whistled Like a Bird, an extraordinary, true story about an independent woman, a world-famous aviator, and the powerful man who loved them both, Sally Putnam Chapman, the granddaughter of Dorothy Binney Putnam and George Putnam, recounts a treasure trove of memories, spanning the years 1907 to 1961, culled from her grandmother's diaries.

"A delicious, often fascinating look into a world of domestic American privilege." ー New York Times Book Review

All the Little Bird-Hearts A Novel【電子書籍】[ Viktoria Lloyd-Barlow ]

“A poetic debut which masterfully intertwines themes of familial love, friendship, class, prejudice and trauma with psychological acuity and wit.”─ The 2023 Booker Prize Judges

I lived for and loved a bird-heart that summer; I only knew it afterwards.

Sunday Forrester does things more carefully than most people. On certain days, she must eat only white food; she drinks only carbonated beverages; she avoids clocks. It's 1988, before autism was widely diagnosed. Sunday has an old etiquette handbook that guides her through confusing social situations, and to escape, she turns to her treasury of Sicilian folklore. The one thing very much out of her control is Dolly, her clever, headstrong teenage daughter, now on the cusp of leaving their home in the Lake District of England.

When the glamourous Vita and Rollo move in next door, the couple disarm Sunday with their charm, and proceed to deliciously break just about every rule in Sunday's book. Soon they are spending loads of time together, and Sunday feels acknowledged like never before. But underneath Vita and Rollo's allure lies something else, something darker. For Sunday has precisely what Vita has always wanted for herself: a daughter of her own.

A page-turning psychological drama, All the Little Bird-Hearts is an extraordinary, often witty glimpse into the mind of an autistic woman─and a remarkable debut by an author who is herself autistic. It is also an astute portrait of a woman coming to terms with the meaning of love, of motherhood, and of authenticity, and a poignant reminder about why accepting ourselves can be so freeing.
