The Cruise of the Shining Light A Sea Voyage of Love, Sacrifice, and Redemption【電子書籍】[ Norman Duncan ]

In "The Cruise of the Shining Light," Norman Duncan deftly navigates the tumultuous waters of human emotion, adventure, and the quest for meaning. Set against the backdrop of the majestic Canadian backdrop, the narrative follows a motley crew aboard a small yacht as they embark on a journey of self-discovery and camaraderie. Duncan's literary style employs rich, evocative imagery and a keen sense of character development, often reflecting the influence of early 20th-century regionalism. Notable for its blend of humor and pathos, the novel captures the essence of maritime life while exploring themes of friendship, loss, and the intangible connection humans have to nature. Norman Duncan was an accomplished Canadian author, journalist, and editor, whose own experiences at sea and deep appreciation for the natural world profoundly shaped his storytelling. His earlier works often depicted the rugged landscape of Canada and the intricacies of its inhabitants, highlighting a blend of realism and romanticism that would underpin much of his writing. This particular work emerges from Duncan's desire to illuminate the complexities of human relationships against the backdrop of the vast ocean, a motif that speaks to his own struggles and aspirations. Recommended for readers who revel in rich character studies and immersive settings, "The Cruise of the Shining Light" stands as a testament to Duncan's literary craftsmanship. This novel invites you to embark on a journey that intertwines the joys and sorrows of life on the water, ultimately encouraging a reflective exploration of your own inner horizons.

Human Forms The Novel in the Age of Evolution【電子書籍】[ Ian Duncan ]

A major rethinking of the European novel and its relationship to early evolutionary science

The 120 years between Henry Fielding's Tom Jones (1749) and George Eliot's Middlemarch (1871) marked both the rise of the novel and the shift from the presumption of a stable, universal human nature to one that changes over time. In Human Forms, Ian Duncan reorients our understanding of the novel's formation during its cultural ascendancy, arguing that fiction produced new knowledge in a period characterized by the interplay between literary and scientific discoursesーeven as the two were separating into distinct domains.

Duncan focuses on several crisis points: the contentious formation of a natural history of the human species in the late Enlightenment; the emergence of new genres such as the Romantic bildungsroman; historical novels by Walter Scott and Victor Hugo that confronted the dissolution of the idea of a fixed human nature; Charles Dickens's transformist aesthetic and its challenge to Victorian realism; and George Eliot's reckoning with the nineteenth-century revolutions in the human and natural sciences. Modeling the modern scientific conception of a developmental human nature, the novel became a major experimental instrument for managing the new set of divisionsーbetween nature and history, individual and species, human and biological lifeーthat replaced the ancient schism between animal body and immortal soul.

The first book to explore the interaction of European fiction with "the natural history of man" from the late Enlightenment through the mid-Victorian era, Human Forms sets a new standard for work on natural history and the novel.

For the Glory The Untold and Inspiring Story of Eric Liddell, Hero of Chariots of Fire【電子書籍】[ Duncan Hamilton ]

**“Hamilton is a guarantee of quality.” ーFinancial Times

“Duncan Hamilton’s compelling biography puts flesh on the legend and paints a vivid picture of not only a great athlete, but also a very special human being.” ーDaily Mail

The untold and inspiring story of Eric Liddell, hero of Chariots of Fire, from his Olympic medal to his missionary work in China to his last, brave years in a Japanese work camp during WWII**

Many people will remember Eric Liddell as the Olympic gold medalist from the Academy Award winning film Chariots of Fire. Famously, Liddell would not run on Sunday because of his strict observance of the Christian sabbath, and so he did not compete in his signature event, the 100 meters, at the 1924 Paris Olympics. He was the greatest sprinter in the world at the time, and his choice not to run was ridiculed by the British Olympic committee, his fellow athletes, and most of the world press. Yet Liddell triumphed in a new event, winning the 400 meters in Paris.

Liddell ran**ーand livedー**for the glory of his God. After winning gold, he dedicated himself to missionary work. He travelled to China to work in a local school and as a missionary. He married and had children there. By the time he could see war on the horizon, Liddell put Florence, his pregnant wife, and children on a boat to Canada, while he stayed behind, his conscience compelling him to stay among the Chinese. He and thousands of other westerners were eventually interned at a Japanese work camp.

Once imprisoned, Liddell did what he was born to do, practice his faith and his sport. He became the moral center of an unbearable world. He was the hardest worker in the camp, he counseled many of the other prisoners, he gave up his own meager portion of meals many days, and he organized games for the children there. He even raced again. For his ailing, malnourished body, it was all too much. Liddell died of a brain tumor just before the end of the war. His passing was mourned around the world, and his story still inspires.

In the spirit of The Boys in the Boat and Unbroken, For the Glory is both a compelling narrative of athletic heroism and a gripping story of faith in the darkest circumstances.

The Sugar Girls - Lilian’s Story Tales of Hardship, Love and Happiness in Tate & Lyle’s East End【電子書籍】[ Duncan Barrett ]

This is Lilian’s story, one of four stories from The Sugar Girls. During the Blitz and the years of rationing, the Sugar Girls kept Britain sweet. The work was back-breakingly hard, but the Tate & Lyle factory was more than just a workplace ? it was a community, a calling, a place of love and support and an uproarious, tribal part of East London.

‘When Lilian Tull came to Tate & Lyle shortly after the end of the war, she was older than most new arrivals. A lanky, fairhaired woman of 23, she worked in the can-making department, where the Golden Syrup tins were assembled. Lilian had arrived on the job with a heavy heart, and her colleagues noticed a sad, far-away look in her eyes.’

In the years leading up to and after the Second World War thousands of women left school at fourteen to work in the bustling factories of London’s East End. Despite long hours, hard and often hazardous work, factory life afforded exciting opportunities for independence, friendship and romance. Of all the factories that lined the docks, it was at Tate & Lyle’s where you could earn the most generous wages and enjoy the best social life, and it was here where The Sugar Girls worked.

This is an evocative, moving story of hunger, hardship and happiness, providing a moving insight into a lost way of life, as well as a timeless testament to the experience of being young and female.

Includes Lilian’s own personal photographs of life as a sugar girl.

It's waiting for you.

Excerpt:

Dante had two loves in his life ? his body and his bike, and both gave him pleasure. He had one of those male bodies that develops pretty much on its own and needs little maintenance. Most guys hated him in that respect, though what he did with his body pleased many of them.

At Chaps, a quasi-leather bar, he was dressed to seduce in faded tight blue jeans, black boots, a leather jacket, and his trademark shades with the stems disappearing in curly black hair. That was Dante. With his shades on and his eyes hidden, he would scour the room looking for a hunk for the night. Without knowing for sure if Dante were checking them out or ignoring them, newcomers could only look in his direction and fantasize.

While he had many friends in the bar who enjoyed watching his pick-up routine, Dante was unaware how much his performance was commented on, and even timed and wagered on. But he rarely failed to score.

But here, hiding in plain sight, is an unlikely realm of ambition and obsession, sparring and politicking, pleasure and play. Here we might find Butchers, to be avoided, or Cows that sh-te Fire, or even catch Calvin in his chamber with a Nonne. This is the secret world of the index: an unsung but extraordinary everyday tool, with an illustrious but little-known past. Here, for the first time, its story is told.

Charting its curious path from the monasteries and universities of thirteenth-century Europe to Silicon Valley in the twenty-first, Dennis Duncan reveals how the index has saved heretics from the stake, kept politicians from high office and made us all into the readers we are today. We follow it through German print shops and Enlightenment coffee houses, novelists' living rooms and university laboratories, encountering emperors and popes, philosophers and prime ministers, poets, librarians and - of course - indexers along the way. Revealing its vast role in our evolving literary and intellectual culture, Duncan shows that, for all our anxieties about the Age of Search, we are all index-rakers at heart, and we have been for eight hundred years.

Minister of Money Henry Duncan, Founder of the Savings Bank Movement【電子書籍】[ Charles W. Munn ]

Henry Duncan was a man of many parts: parish minister, savings bank founder, political lobbyist, anti-slavery campaigner, educator, geologist, poet, author. He restored the Ruthwell Cross, a medieval monument of international importance. He also played a major role in the Disruption of the Church of Scotland in 1843 ? the most significant social event in nineteenth-century Scotland. But his lasting legacy is as founder of the worldwide savings bank movement. He first opened a parish bank in Ruthwell, Dumfriesshire, in 1810, to encourage the 'industrious poor' to save for times of hardship. It was run by local voluntary trustees, and the idea spread to become the basis of trustee savings banks across the world.

Duncan was a product of the Enlightenment and his Christian faith. While these were often uneasy bedfellows, he found ways to reconcile them by addressing the economic and social problems of his parishioners as well as their spiritual needs. A man of vision and compassion, Duncan believed fundamentally in the dignity of ordinary working people. From its beginnings in a small cottage on the shores of the Solway, his community savings bank went on to influence and inspire generations all over the world.

The History of the Life and Adventures of Mr. Duncan Campell【電子書籍】[ William Bond ]

The book blends fact and fiction, creating a compelling narrative of Campbell's life. It recounts his early years in Scotland, his unique ability to "hear" supernatural voices despite his physical disabilities, and his rise to fame in London society as a fortune teller. Through a series of entertaining anecdotes and adventures, the book explores Campbell’s predictions, many of which were sought after by members of the aristocracy and even royalty. The narrative also highlights his dealings with witches, spirits, and mysterious occurrences that enhanced his reputation as a man of mystical powers. This semi-fictionalized biography is typical of Defoe’s style, combining elements of adventure, the supernatural, and social commentary. The work captures the public's fascination with the occult and reflects the period's interest in mysticism, while also presenting Campbell as a remarkable figure who overcame his disabilities to achieve fame. The History of the Life and Adventures of Mr. Duncan Campbell remains a curious blend of biography, folklore, and fantasy, providing insight into 18th-century attitudes toward disability and the supernatural.

The enduring cultural legacy of Shakespeare’s Juliet Capulet ー a history "as vital and provocative as the character herself" (Literary Review).

Romeo and Juliet may be the greatest love story ever told, but who is Juliet? Demure ing?nue? Or dangerous Mediterranean madwoman? From tearstained copies of the First Folio to Civil War-era fanfiction, Shakespeare’s star-crossed heroine has long captured our collective imagination.

Juliet is her story, traced across continents through four centuries of history, theatre, and film. As Oxford Shakespeare scholar Sophie Duncan reveals, Juliet’s legacy stretches beyond her literary lifespan into a cultural afterlife ranging from enslaved African girls in the British Caribbean to the real-life Juliets of sectarian violence in Bosnia and Belfast. She argues that our dangerous obsession with the beautiful dead teenager and Juliet’s meteoric rise as a defiant sexual icon have come to define the Western ideal of romance.

Wry and inventive, Juliet is a tribute to fiction’s most famous teenage girl who died young, but who lives forever.

Duncan Williamson was a Scottish traveller who went on to become one of Britain's master story-tellers. During his lifetime he was acclaimed 'the greatest English-speaking storyteller', 'the national monument of British storytelling' and, at his death, Scotland's 'greatest contemporary storyteller'. Fireside Tales, his first book, reveals this artistry and mastery in all its glory. This new edition is edited by his wife, Linda Williamson.

Fireside Tales is narrated with an intense commitment to generations of the travelling people, who used animal fables, wonder tales and splendid horror stories to instil in their children moral judgment and a knowledge of right and wrong. At every corner the technical skill of the narrator is revealed, his ingenious mixture of conversation and action, frequent change of pace, use of the first person ? all attributes of the born storyteller which compel attention, where tension and excitement are at fever pitch throughout. With a universality that can relate to every reader, this book represents one of the great collections of traveller stories.
