Leo Fender The Quiet Giant Heard Around the World【電子書籍】[ Phyllis Fender ]
|

Occasionally, the world produces one of those rare thinkers that alter the course of history.

Disney reinvented entertainment, Einstein revolutionized science, Edison lit up our lives with the light bulb, Bell got the world talking with the telephone … and Fender revolutionized music.

If you think about it, Leo Fender has influenced every person on earth today ? at least everyone who has ever heard a song.

Guitar Player Magazine declared that Clarence Leo Fender is the father of the solid body guitar. Not only did he invent it, but Leo’s guitars were used by everyone from Elvis Presley, to Eric Clapton and from Jimmy Page to Jimmy Hendrix. Indeed, Rolling Stone Magazine published a list of the world's top 100 guitarists, and 90 of them used one of Leo's guitars on stage, and the others used guitars that copied Leo's inventions and concepts.

Leo Fender was shy, had one glass eye, and was nearly deaf. Yet, from the small town of Fullerton, California, he built an iconic worldwide empire that is worshiped by the rock stars themselves. The highest price ever spent for music memorabilia was not for Michael Jackson’s glove, original Beatles’ handwritten lyrics or even Elvis’ killer pantsuit. It was for a Fender Stratocaster, which sold for a staggering $2.7 million.

Written by the wife of the late Leo Fender, for the very first time, this book provides a rare look into the wonderful mind and world of this quiet genius.

Not Uncommon, Just Unheard Of【電子書籍】[ Esther Leidolf ]
|

This is an Intersex memoir, but the best way to tell my story is to take you there. A union carpenter holds her own on the job until she gets hurt. While recovering from an injury, she digs into a mysterious medical situation from her past and old issues resurface. She then learns that she is part of a community who has been systemically duped and erased for not measuring up. Esther is a semi-retired carpenter, and medical sociologist with a background in public health data management. She was the first person to to speak about her experience with MRKH and challenge the way the medical community treated her for being different. Her essays have been published internationally, and she has appeared in a number of documentaries. She currently works as a consultant on federal and local levels, hoping to make her experience and her community less "unheard of." This memoir courageously breaks the silence about one of our best kept medical secrets.

|

A behind-the-scenes look at the groundbreaking filmmaker M. Night Shyamalan

In his relatively young career, M. Night Shyamalan has achieved phenomenal commercial and critical success. His films The Sixth Sense, Unbreakable, Signs, and The Village have grossed over $1.5 billion and reinvented the thriller genre. Because Shyamalan has worked outside of the Hollywood system, however, his filmmaking habits and personality have remained largely unknown. But reporter Michael Bamberger obtained unprecedented access to Shyamalan during the tumultuous production of his film Lady in the Water, and in The Man Who Heard Voices exposes the struggles and triumphs of this modern-day Hitchcock at work.

From revising the screenplay to shooting on location and evaluating the crucial initial test screening, The Man Who Heard Voices tracks all stages in the life of Shyamalan’s film. Bamberger delves into Shyamalan’s relationship with the actors and the studio (he moved from Disney to Warner Bros. for this film) while also profiling various players on set. The result is a fascinating insider portrait of creative geniusーand the real-life story behind a Hollywood thriller.

The Wedding Heard 'Round the World America's First Gay Marriage【電子書籍】[ Michael McConnell ]
|

On September 3, 1971, Michael McConnell and Jack Baker exchanged vows in the first legal same-sex wedding in the United States. Their remarkable story is told here for the first timeーa unique account of the passion and energy of the gay liberation movement in the sixties and seventies.

At the dawn of the modern gay movement (while New York’s Stonewall riots and San Francisco’s emerging political activism bloomed), these two young men insisted on making their commitment a legal reality. They were already crusaders for gay rights: Jack had twice been elected the University of Minnesota’s student presidentーthe first openly gay university student president in the country, an election reported by Walter Cronkite on network TV news. They were featured in Look magazine’s special issue about the American family and received letters of support from around the world.

The couple navigated complex procedures to obtain a state-issued marriage license. Their ceremony was conducted by a Methodist minister in a friend’s tiny Minneapolis apartment. Wearing matching white pantsuits, exchanging custom-designed rings, and sharing a tiered wedding cake, Michael and Jack celebrated their historic marriage. After reciting their vows, they sealed their promise to love and honor each other with a kiss and a signed marriage certificate.

Repercussions were immediate: Michael’s job offer at the University of Minnesota was rescinded, leading him to wage a battle against job discrimination with the help of the Minnesota Civil Liberties Union. The couple eventually reached the U.S. Supreme Court with two precedent-setting cases.

Michael and Jack have retired from the public spotlight, but after four decades their marriage is still their joy and comfort. Living quietly in a Minneapolis bungalow, they exemplify a contemporary version of the American dream. Only now, with marriage equality in the headlines and the Supreme Court decision to make love the law of the land, are they willing to tell the entire story of their groundbreaking experiences. TIME magazine listed the twenty-five most influential marriages of all time and included Michael and Jack, and they were recently profiled in a cover story in the Sunday New York Times. Their long campaign for marriage equality and insistence on equal rights for all citizens is a model for advocates of social justice and an inspiration for everyone who struggles for acceptance in a less-than-equal world.

Hollywood Vampires Johnny Depp, Amber Heard, and the Celebrity Exploitation Machine【電子書籍】[ Kelly Loudenberg ]

**An explosive new book on the infamous trial *Depp v. Heard,***Hollywood Vampires paints an intimate picture of what was really going on behind the viral headlines between Johnny Depp and Amber Heard, with never-before-told stories from their inner circle.

Celebrity romances have always captured the public’s imagination, playing out like soap operas seized upon by fans and tabloids alike. By the same token, high-profile trials can take over the mainstream media cycle, with both news pundits and the public picking over every detail to predict outcomes and cast their own judgements. Enter the union, dissolution, and hostile legal battle between Johnny Depp and Amber Heardーwhere these dual obsessions collided, creating a chaotic moment of true cultural fixation.

Hollywood Vampires offers an inside account of one of the most controversial and consequential celebrity scandals of the internet era. Fueled by viral clips, reaction videos, and endless online debates, the trial became more than a legal battle. It became a public spectacle, dividing audiences worldwide.

Kelly Loudenberg and Makiko Wholey were journalists on the ground for the Depp v Heard trial. Having closely followed Johnny, Amber, and their camps, they spent the years leading up to and following the trial interviewing the couple’s closest allies as well as their managers, lawyers, agents, business associates, publicists, assistants, and personal staff. The result is a page-turning Hollywood epic full of revealing details that tell a wider tale about the celebrity-industrial complex, modern fandom, inflammatory culture wars, and contemporary feminism.

Turning the lens around, Hollywood Vampires questions how the celebrity exploitation machine, strengthened by the forces of social media and legacy media alike, blurs the lines between fact and fiction, comedy and horror. It forces us to ask ourselves why we take celebrity culture so seriously in the first placeーand who wins and who loses when Hollywood becomes the vehicle for our own personal and political causes.

After signing a year-long intern contract with Willamette-Cascade, assigned to Guatemala, David Hampson awakens in an Oregon which isn't his, quartered in what he thinks of as a 'company town' populated by cheerful millworkers, dedicated support personnel, soccer-playing schoolchildren, and well-weaponed security people. His minder is an old environmental acquaintance, Susan Meath, who signed up a year earlier. Susan poo-poos David's fears and teases him about his job, helping Ornithologist Hobart Morris breed Northern Spotted Owls in an enormous climate-controlled aviary known as the 'Owl Factory.' When ready, nearly four thousand mature Spotted Owls will be released in our world to blunt the efforts of the environmental movement, which has locked-down logging in the Pacific Northwest. But trouble is coming in the form of 'Planet Prime,' an organization which thinks 'Earth First' is a 'bunch of wusses.' Armed with AK-47s and thousand of rounds of ammunition, their well-prepared force will turn 'Alongside' into a smouldering ruin and bring Willamette-Cascade's greedy dreams to an end.

For as long as I can remember, I've been a fighter.

Before she reached her eighteenth birthday, Taekwondo champion Kaylynne Venn had experienced 23 emergency room visits, 11 nights in hospital beds, and over 10 attempts to escape the pain of her post-traumatic stress disorder. Raped by a classmate in her first year of high school, she spent her five years in survival mode, fighting to keep afloat in a sea of shame and silence.

In her powerful memoir, Speak Up and Fight, she shows how she broke through that silence to reclaim her voice, diving into the challenges she faced within the mental health system and in her legal battle against her rapist. From self-harm to suicide attempts and her family’s suffering, The long-lasting effects of her assault expand far beyond the start of the horror she experienceーrevealing a deep, personal struggle to survive in a world that too often refused to listen.

Yet in sharing her journey from victimhood to survivorship, she aims to encourage others to speak up, support one another, and work fighting all together toward healing and justice.

The First Time I Ever Heard...【電子書籍】[ Kevin Lawson ]

Humorist Kevin Lawson is nothing if not nostalgic, and this time he's taking a look back at the albums that helped shape his life. From Led Zeppelin to Nirvana, Beatles to Prince, Lawson shares his first impressions of classic rock albums.

Led Zeppelin IV - Led Zeppelin

I remember the first time I heard Led Zeppelin IV like it was yesterday, and trust me, it was a moment that changed my life forever, or at least my taste in music. It was a rainy Saturday afternoon, the kind of day that begs you to curl up with a blanket and binge-watch a series you've seen three times already. But, of course, I decided to take a different route. I was 17, and my rebellious spirit was fueled by a mix of boredom and a desperate need to impress my friends. So, I dug through my dad's old vinyl collection, and there it was: Led Zeppelin IV, that iconic album cover with the old man carrying a bundle of sticks. I thought, "What could be more rebellious than listening to an album that looks like it belongs in a museum?"

I dropped the needle, and the moment "Black Dog" kicked in, I felt like I had been hit by a freight train. I mean, what was this? It was like someone had taken all the best parts of rock and roll, cranked them up to eleven, and tossed in a pinch of magic dust. I was instantly hooked. Robert Plant's voice soared higher than my expectations for my future, and I could practically feel Jimmy Page's guitar melting my face off. I was a goner. I had no idea what I was getting into, but I was ready to dive headfirst into the world of classic rock.

Then came "Stairway to Heaven." Now, let me tell you, I had heard snippets of this song before, but hearing it in its entirety felt like being initiated into some secret society of music lovers. I sat there, wide-eyed, as I listened to the lyrics, pondering the meaning of life and the universe. Was I supposed to buy a stairway? Should I be looking for one? I pictured myself wandering through a hardware store, asking the clerk if they had any stairways in stock. "Excuse me, sir, do you have a stairway to heaven? I'm looking for something that really elevates my soul."

By the time "Rock and Roll" started blasting through the speakers, I was bouncing off the walls like a pinball machine. I was convinced I could play air guitar like Page himself, even though my coordination was more akin to a baby giraffe learning to walk. I was a mess, but I was a happy mess. I felt alive, like I could conquer the world or at least the next round of karaoke.

That day, I didn't just discover an album; I discovered a part of myself that craved the wild, the loud, and the unapologetically rock and roll. I walked away from that experience with a new appreciation for music, a slightly bruised ego from my air guitar antics, and a lifelong love affair with Led Zeppelin that still has me searching for that mystical stairway.

Sick On You The Disastrous Story of The Hollywood Brats, the Greatest Band You've Never Heard Of【電子書籍】[ Andrew Matheson ]

|

MOJO magazine’s 2015 Book of the Year, the outrageous true story of the Hollywood Bratsーthe greatest punk band you've never heard ofーbrilliantly told by founding member Andrew Matheson

With only a guitar, a tatty copy of the Melody Maker, and his template for the perfect band, Andrew Matheson set out, in 1971, to make music history. His band, the Hollywood Brats, were pre-punk prophetsーuncompromising, ultrathin, wild, and untamable. Thrown into the crazy world of the 1970s London music scene, the Brats recorded one genius-but-ignored album and ultimately fell foul of the crooks who ran a music industry that just wasn't quite ready for the punk revolution. Directly inspiring Malcolm McLaren, the Sex Pistols, and the Clash, the Hollywood Brats imploded too soon to share in the glory. Sick On You is a startling, funny, and incredibly entertaining period memoir about never quite achieving success despite flying so close to greatness.
