From a 2021 Whiting Award and Guggenheim Fellow recipient, a 'rhapsodic, rigorous poetry collection, which pays homage to everyday Black experience in the US' (New Yorker)

Selected as a book of the year by the Telegraph

_______________________________

Owed is a book with celebration at its centre. Its primary concern is how we might mend the relationship between ourselves and the people, spaces, and objects we have been taught to think of as insignificant, as fundamentally unworthy of study, reflection, attention, or care.

Spanning the spectrum of genre and form - from elegy and ode to origin myth--these poems elaborate an aesthetics of repair. What's more, they ask that we turn to the songs and sites of the historically denigrated so that we might uncover a new way of being in the world together, one wherein we can truthfully reckon with the brutality of the past and thus imagine the possibilities of our shared, unpredictable present, anew.

In the parish of Stepney, in the county of Middlesex, there lived, amidst the hundreds of thousands of human bees who throng that overcrowded locality, a family composed of four persons--mother, father, and two children, boy and girl--who owned the surprising name of Marvel. They had lived in their hive for goodness knows how many years. The father's father had lived there and died there; the father had been married from there; and the children had been born there. The bees in the locality, who elbowed each other and trod upon each other's toes, were poor and common bees, and did not make much honey. Some of them made just enough to live upon; and a good many of them, now and then, ran a little short. The consequence was, that they could not store any honey for a rainy day, and were compelled to labor and toil right through the year, in cold weather and in warm weather, in sunshine and in rain. In which respect they were worse off than other bees we know of that work in the summer and make themselves cosey in the winter. The bees in the neighborhood being common and poor, it was natural that the neighborhood itself should partake of the character of its inhabitants. But, common and poor as it was, it was not too common nor too poor for love to dwell in it. Love did reside there; not only in the hive of the Marvels, but in hundreds of other hives, tenanted by the humblest of humble bees. George Marvel had married for love; and, lest the reader should suppose that the contract was one-sided, it may be as well to mention that George Marvel's wife had also married for love. They fell in love in the way, and they married in the usual way; and, happy and satisfied with each other, they did not mar their enjoyment of the then present by thinking of the sharp stones which, from the very circumstances of their position, were pretty sure to dot the road of their future lives. There are many such simple couples in the world who believe that the future is carpeted with velvet grass, with the sun always shining upon it, and who find themselves all too soon stumbling over a dark and rocky thoroughfare.

Part ecological Orpheus and Eurydice myth and part gothic thriller, discover this atmospheric near-future sci-fi novel about fae mysteries deep within strange nature preserves

Perfect for readers of Jeff VanderMeer, Chuck Wendig, and Sunyi Dean ? “Richly imagined and beautifully written, with a highly original and very creepy magic system.” ーR. F. Kuang (on Johnson's The Forever Sea)

On the autumnal equinox of 1987, after fencing off half of the Earth’s land for huge nature reserves called Harbors, the leaders of the world called on their peoples to celebrate. Then began the horror and the magic.

Everyone who died that dayーall 132,329 of themーinstead of going cold and still, turned odd and fae. They became mischievous and murderous, before disappearing into their nearest Harbor, never seen again. And each year after that on the autumnal equinox, the same terrible transformations would occur: the wretched dead not dying, but instead riddling and whispering of a faerie queenーbloodless and powerfulーwhile fleeing into the wild confines of the Harbors.

In the present day, Evangeline and Calidore are working as fencers, government-employed protectors whose magical powers come from mysterious tattoos of prime numbers. When they aren’t fixing the fences of the Midwest Harbor that separates the human world from Faerie or patrolling on the equinox, they are parents of an almost-seven-year-old daughter named Winnie.

But as the new year’s autumnal equinox approaches, Evangeline and Calidore find themselves thrust into a vast conspiracy that stretches across governments, religions, and fencers worldwide. As they race to untangle this web of power and intrigue, they will need to confront the questions that have haunted the world since the fences were built:

What lies at the heart of the Harbors? Fernsehsucht oder - Emanzipation? Joshua Meyrowitz' 'Die Fernsehgesellschaft' im Spiegel von Heiko Michael Hartmanns Roman 'MOI' Emanzipation? Joshua Meyrowitz' 'Die Fernsehgesellschaft' im Spiegel von Heiko Michael Hartmanns Roman 'MOI'【電子書籍】

This story is born from the whispered tales of coastal towns, from the haunting legends of lost ships and forgotten gods, from the echo of ancient rituals carried on the sea wind. It's a tribute to the power of storytelling, the way a well-spun yarn can transport us to another realm, make us question our realities, and leave us breathless with a mixture of terror and delight. To those who have ever felt the pull of a mystery, the irresistible urge to uncover the truth, even when the truth hides in the deepest, darkest depths, this book is for you. For those who have experienced loss, who have known the sting of grief and the enduring power of memory, this dedication is a small token of understanding. The characters in this story grapple with their own losses, navigating the treacherous terrain of heartbreak and survival. It's a story about finding strength in unexpected places, about resilience in the face of adversity, and the enduring power of hope even when the odds seem insurmountable. To the brave hearts who face their fears, this book is your silent salute. Perfect for fans of H.P. Lovecraft, Tana French, and Stephen King, this atmospheric maritime thriller weaves together cosmic horror, murder mystery, and the inescapable pull of ancestral ties. Eon vowed vengeance, while Yoto sought a timid life in hopes of drawing no attention from their cruel overlords.

Joshua West is a twenty-five year old physics graduate. He has lived the life of a recluse in his parent’s comfortable Cambridge home for two years. Joshua has been influenced by the Japanese phenomenon called Hikikomori whereby thousands of young men have withdrawn from society. Having had plenty of time to ponder his situation he has concluded that he is now obsolete. Joshua is therefore preparing himself and his family for his imminent act of ritualistic suicide. Part of his preparation involves writing a series of death poems which he reads to his family. His parents are dealing with this situation stoically while his little sister is trying to persuade him not to die prematurely for her sake. Joshua is convinced that he is doing God’s work by taking his own life. This text also deals with the effects of the changing role of young men in a modern society where women are beginning to take on a more masculine working role. There are some lighter moments in this very dark novella but it deals mainly with a young man struggling to cope with his own imminent mortality.

In this volume, Joshua Eckhardt examines the religious texts and books that surrounded the poems, sermons, and inscriptions of the early modern poet and preacher John Donne. Focusing on the material realities legible in manuscripts and Sammelb?nde, bookshops and private libraries, Eckhardt uncovers the myriad ways in which Donne’s writings were received and presented, first by his contemporaries, and later by subsequent readers of his work.

Eckhardt sheds light on the religious writings with which Donne’s work was linked during its circulation, using a bibliographic approach that also informs our understanding of his work’s reception during the early modern period. He analyzes the religious implications of the placement of Donne’s poem “A Litany” in a library full of Roman Catholic and English prayer books, the relationship and physical proximity of Donne’s writings to figures such as Sir Thomas Egerton and Izaak Walton, and the movements in later centuries of Donne’s work from private owners to the major libraries that have made this study possible. Eckhardt’s detailed research reveals how Donne’s writings have circulated throughout historyーand how religious readers, communities, and movements affected the distribution and reception of his body of work.

Centered on a place in time when distinct methods of reproduction, preservation, and circulation were used to negotiate a complex and sometimes dangerous world of confessional division, Religion Around John Donne makes an original contribution to Donne studies, religious history, book history, and reception studies.

The Dialectic of Truth and Fiction in Joshua Oppenheimer's The Act of Killing【電子書籍】[ Milo Sweedler ]

The Act of Killing is a documentary film on the Indonesian genocide that took place between October 1965 and March 1966, during which time an estimated 500,000 to 2.5 million accused communists, including landless farmers, unionized workers, labour organizers, intellectuals and ethnic Chinese Indonesians, were killed. However, much of the film is dedicated to fictional re-enactments of the 1965?66 killings.

Oppenheimer’s approach is to bring into relief the contours of the extermination of communists in Indonesia by inviting former death-squad leaders and paramilitary gangsters to re-enact the killings in whatever ways they choose. They opt at times for a realist aesthetic and at other times for genres as diverse as Hollywood westerns, film noir gangster movies, and glitzy musicals.

The text explores the aesthetic and political consequences springing from this modality of representation while comparing the film to other representative testimonial documentaries of genocides and extermination.
