Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl Autobiography【電子書籍】[ Harriet Jacobs ]

Harriet Jacobs' "Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl" stands as a seminal work in American literature, providing a harrowing yet insightful account of a woman's struggle against the dehumanizing institution of slavery. Written in the narrative style of an autobiographical slave memoir, Jacobs employs a confessional tone that engenders both empathy and outrage. The book explores themes of resilience, motherhood, and sexuality, addressing the unique struggles faced by enslaved women, and reflecting the broader socio-political climate of antebellum America. Jacobs' poignant prose is meticulously crafted to evoke the emotional and psychological trauma of her experiences, resonating deeply with readers and contributing to the abolitionist movement. Harriet Jacobs, writing under the pseudonym Linda Brent, was born into slavery in 1813 and lived through the harrowing realities of the antebellum South. Her eventual escape to freedom was motivated by her desire to protect her children from the depredations of slavery, giving her narrative a deeply personal and urgent imperative. Jacobs was influenced by both literary and socio-political contexts, drawing inspiration from earlier works of female abolitionists and the burgeoning feminist movement. "Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl" is recommended not only as an essential historical document but also as a profound exploration of human rights and dignity. It serves as a poignant reminder of the systemic injustices that have shaped American society and continues to resonate with contemporary discussions on race and gender. This book is a must-read for anyone seeking to understand the depths of human resilience and the complexities of identity in the face of oppression.

Women Who Invented the Sixties Ella Baker, Jane Jacobs, Rachel Carson, and Betty Friedan【電子書籍】[ Steve Golin ]

While there were many protests in the 1950sーagainst racial segregation, economic inequality, urban renewal, McCarthyism, and the nuclear buildupーthe movements that took off in the early 1960s were qualitatively different. They were sustained, not momentary; they were national, not just local; they changed public opinion, rather than being ignored. Women Who Invented the Sixties tells the story of how four women helped define the 1960s and made a lasting impression for decades to follow.

In 1960, Ella Baker played the key role in the founding of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee, which became an essential organization for students during the civil rights movement and the model for the antiwar and women’s movements. In 1961, Jane Jacobs published The Death and Life of Great American Cities, changing the shape of urban planning irrevocably. In 1962, Rachel Carson published Silent Spring, creating the modern environmental movement. And in 1963, Betty Friedan wrote The Feminine Mystique, which sparked second-wave feminism and created lasting changes for women. Their four separate interventions helped, together, to end the 1950s and invent the 1960s.

Women Who Invented the Sixties situates each of these four women in the 1950sーBaker’s early activism with the NAACP and the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, Jacobs’s work with Architectural Forum and her growing involvement in neighborhood protest, Carson’s conservation efforts and publications, and Friedan’s work as a labor journalist and the discrimination she facedーbefore exploring their contributions to the 1960s and the movements they each helped shape.

Kev's had a truly horrible year. After losing his mom, he was plunged into a deep depression, and only pulled through with his best friend Andrew's help. So when Andrew invites him to spend Christmas with his family in Connecticut, it would be pretty crappy to turn down the invitation, despite not being sure how he would fit in with Andrew's very white, very wholesome family.

As soon as they get there, Kev and Andrew are greeted with over-active and curious children, and many harried--and curious--adults. As Kev struggles to find his place amidst the chaos, he is also confronted by his awakening desire for something he really can't have--his straight best friend.

But revelations, great and small, take everyone by surprise--and show that Christmas just might be the happiest time of the year, after all.

CW for parental loss, depression, past suicidality, and past self-harm

Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl.【電子書籍】[ Harriet A. Jacobs ]

Reader be assured this narrative is no fiction. I am aware that some of my adventures may seem incredible; but they are, nevertheless, strictly true. I have not exaggerated the wrongs inflicted by Slavery; on the contrary, my descriptions fall far short of the facts. I have concealed the names of places, and given persons fictitious names. I had no motive for secrecy on my own account, but I deemed it kind and considerate towards others to pursue this course. I wish I were more competent to the task I have undertaken. But I trust my readers will excuse deficiencies in consideration of circumstances. I was born and reared in Slavery; and I remained in a Slave State twenty-seven years. Since I have been at the North, it has been necessary for me to work diligently for my own support, and the education of my children. This has not left me much leisure to make up for the loss of early opportunities to improve myself; and it has compelled me to write these pages at irregular intervals, whenever I could snatch an hour from household duties. When I first arrived in Philadelphia, Bishop Paine advised me to publish a sketch of my life, but I told him I was altogether incompetent to such an undertaking. Though I have improved my mind somewhat since that time, I still remain of the same opinion; but I trust my motives will excuse what might otherwise seem presumptuous. I have not written my experiences in order to attract attention to myself; on the contrary, it would have been more pleasant to me to have been silent about my own history. Neither do I care to excite sympathy for my own sufferings. But I do earnestly desire to arouse the women of the North to a realizing sense of the condition of two millions of women at the South, still in bondage, suffering what I suffered, and most of them far worse. I want to add my testimony to that of abler pens to convince the people of the Free States what Slavery really is. Only by experience can any one realize how deep, and dark, and foul is that pit of abominations. May the blessing of God rest on this imperfect effort in behalf of my persecuted people!

The Pink Hotel A Novel【電子書籍】[ Liska Jacobs ]

"Heady and dark and dangerous, The Pink Hotel is an intoxicating binge of a book. Liska Jacobs's stunning indictment of a society teetering toward apocalypse is one you won’t easily forget.” ーJanelle Brown, author of I'll Be You

Newlyweds Keith and Kit Collins can hardly believe their luck when the general manager of the iconic, opulent Pink Hotel invites them to come for a luxurious stay as a bid to hire Keith. Kit loves their small-town life, but Keith has always wanted more, and the glittering, lily-scented lobby makes him feel right at home.

Soon after their arrival, wildfires sweep through the surrounding mountains and Los Angeles becomes a pressure cooker, with riots breaking out across the city amid rolling blackouts. The Pink Hotel closes its doors to "outsiders," and Keith and Kit find themselves confined with an anxious, disgruntled staff and a growing roster of eccentric, ultra-wealthy, dangerously idle guests who flock to the hotel for sanctuary, company, and entertainment.

The Pink Hotel exposes a tenuous class system within its walls, full of insurmountable expectations and unspoken resentments, which deteriorate as the city burns. In her barbed, provocative new novel, Liska Jacobs explores the corrosive nature of greed and interrogates the notion of true love, while hurtling readers toward certain disaster.

Joseph Jacobs was a scholar and historian, mostly known as a collector and publisher of English Folklore.
“The Lad with the Goat-skin” is a tale about a boy, named Tom, who was the son of one poor widow. The woman was so poor that she had no clothes to put on her son; so she used to fix him in the ash-hole, near the fire, and pile the warm ashes about him. When he grew up the mother got a goat-skin, and fastened it around his waist. The tale depicts the adventures of the lad with the goat-skin.
Folklorist Joseph Jacobs is credited with helping many folktales be saved from extinction, and he helped popularize many of the tales we still read today.
