John Rawls The Path to a Theory of Justice【電子書籍】[ Andrius Gali?anka ]
|

An engaging account of the titan of political philosophy and the development of his most important work, A Theory of Justice, coming at a moment when its ideas are sorely needed.

It is hard to overestimate the influence of John Rawls on political philosophy and theory over the last half-century. His books have sold millions of copies worldwide, and he is one of the few philosophers whose work is known in the corridors of power as well as in the halls of academe. Rawls is most famous for the development of his view of “justice as fairness,” articulated most forcefully in his best-known work, A Theory of Justice. In it he develops a liberalism focused on improving the fate of the least advantaged, and attempts to demonstrate that, despite our differences, agreement on basic political institutions is both possible and achievable.

Critics have maintained that Rawls’s view is unrealistic and ultimately undemocratic. In this incisive new intellectual biography, Andrius Gali?anka argues that in misunderstanding the origins and development of Rawls’s central argument, previous narratives fail to explain the novelty of his philosophical approach and so misunderstand the political vision he made prevalent. Gali?anka draws on newly available archives of Rawls’s unpublished essays and personal papers to clarify the justifications Rawls offered for his assumption of basic moral agreement. Gali?anka’s intellectual-historical approach reveals a philosopher struggling toward humbler claims than critics allege.

To engage with Rawls’s search for agreement is particularly valuable at this political juncture. By providing insight into the origins, aims, and arguments of A Theory of Justice, Gali?anka’s John Rawls will allow us to consider the philosopher’s most important and influential work with fresh eyes.

Grace Abounding to the Chief of Sinners【電子書籍】[ John Bunyan ]
|

Come and hear, all ye that fear God, and I will declare what he has done unto my soul. (Psalm 66:16)

This is a short and honest account of how God demonstrated His exceeding great mercy to His unworthy servant, John Bunyan.

This story specifically tells how Bunyan was converted. John Bunyan was a companion of sin and was troubled by sin. He fought temptation and sin in his own strength and lost, and in despair he gave up hope of ever finding God’s mercy; but the Lord Jesus Christ at last delivered him from the guilt and terror that so often and so viciously troubled him.

In addition to this, a short account of Bunyan’s call to the work of the ministry is told, along with the trials and trouble he encountered ? including some of the difficulties he faced while in prison.

This is all taken from his writings and is now published for the encouragement and support of others who are weak and tempted and need strength and hope and victory in Jesus.

About the Author
John Bunyan was born in November 1628, in Elstow, England. A celebrated English minister and preacher, he wrote The Pilgrim’s Progress (1678), the book that was the most characteristic expression of the Puritan religious outlook. His other works include doctrinal and controversial writings; a spiritual autobiography, Grace Abounding (1666); and the allegory, The Holy War (1682).

Call for the Dead A George Smiley Novel【電子書籍】[ John le Carr? ]

The first of his peerless novels of Cold War espionage and international intrigue, Call for the Dead is also the debut of John le Carr?'s masterful creation George Smiley.

"Go back to Whitehall and look for more spies on your drawing boards."

George Smiley is no one's idea of a spyーwhich is perhaps why he's such a natural. But Smiley apparently made a mistake. After a routine security interview, he concluded that the affable Samuel Fennan had nothing to hide. Why, then, did the man from the Foreign Office shoot himself in the head only hours later? Or did he?

The heart-stopping tale of intrigue that launched both novelist and spy, Call for the Dead is an essential introduction to le Carr?'s chillingly amoral universe.

The second volume, however, will conclude the account of the ancient architecture of Venice. The third will embrace the Early, the Roman, and the Grotesque Renaissance; and an Index, which, as it gives, in alphabetical order, a brief account of all the buildings in Venice, or references to the places where they are mentioned in the text, will be found a convenient guide for the traveller. In order to make it more serviceable, I have introduced some notices of the pictures which I think most interesting in the various churches, and in the Scuola di San Rocco.

In "Dante: The Central Man of All the World," John T. Slattery undertakes an incisive examination of Dante Alighieri'??s multifaceted contributions to literature and philosophy. Through a meticulous analysis of Dante's works, particularly "The Divine Comedy," Slattery illuminates Dante'??s exploration of the human condition, moral philosophy, and the intricacies of the soul's journey towards God. Employing a blend of literary criticism, historical context, and philosophical inquiry, the book navigates through the poetic structures and allegorical dimensions that characterize Dante'??s oeuvre, establishing the poet as a pivotal figure in both the Italian Renaissance and the broader landscape of world literature. John T. Slattery, an expert in medieval literature and philosophy, draws on his extensive academic background to present this compelling study. His profound appreciation for Dante's transformative vision profoundly shaped his scholarship, enabling him to connect Dante'??s exploration of personal and divine justice to contemporary issues of morality and ethics. Slattery'??s erudition adds depth to the text, providing insights into the life experiences and cultural dynamics that informed Dante's writings. This book is a must-read for anyone seeking a deeper understanding of Dante's enduring impact on literature and human thought. Slattery's eloquent prose and comprehensive analysis invite readers to reconsider Dante not merely as a historical figure, but as the "Central Man of All the World" whose insights remain remarkably relevant today.

In "The Doers," William John Hopkins delves into the dynamic interplay between human agency and societal advancement. With a prose style that is both incisive and evocative, Hopkins crafts a compelling narrative that intertwines philosophical discourse with pragmatic realism. The book situates itself within the broader literary tradition of social critique, reminiscent of the works of thinkers like John Dewey and William James, as it examines the lives of individuals who take actionable steps toward change, often against the backdrop of systemic inertia and societal apathy. Each chapter elegantly balances anecdote with analysis, inviting readers to explore the essence of proactive engagement in a world rife with obstacles. William John Hopkins, a renowned scholar in sociology and philosophy, draws upon his extensive academic background and personal experiences as a community organizer. His passion for examining the intricacies of human motivation and behavior led him to write this book, as he aims to empower individuals to reflect upon their roles in shaping society. Hopkins' insights are further enriched by his travels and interactions with grassroots movements across various cultures, revealing a deep-seated belief in the potential of ordinary people to effect extraordinary change. "The Doers" is an essential read for anyone seeking inspiration and a renewed sense of agency in their own lives. Hopkins' incisive exploration serves as a clarion call, urging readers to embrace their potential as catalysts for change.
**The National Bestseller ? One of The Minneapolis Star Tribune's Best Books of the Year

“A superb book...[Kaplan is] a master biographer, a dogged researcher and shaper of narrative, and this is his most ambitious book to date.” ーLos Angeles Times

From the author of the definitive biography of Frank Sinatra, the story of three towering artistsーMiles Davis, John Coltrane, and Bill Evansーand how they came together to create the most iconic jazz album of all time, Kind of Blue**

In 1959, America’s great indigenous art form, jazz, reached the height of its power and popularity. James Kaplan’s magnificent 3 Shades of Blue captures how that golden era came to be, and its pinnacle with the recording of Kind of Blue. It’s a book about music, and business, and race, and heroin, and the cities that gave jazz its home, and the Black geniuses behind its rise. It’s an astonishing meditation on creativity and the strange environments where it can flourish most. It’s a book about the great forebears and founders of a lost era, and the disrupters who would take the music down truly new paths. And it’s about why the world of jazz most people know is a museum to this never-replicated period.

But above all, 3 Shades of Blue is a book about three very different menーthe greatness and varied fortunes of Miles Davis, John Coltrane, and Bill Evans. The tapestry of their lives is, in Kaplan’s hands, a national odyssey with no direction home. It is also a masterpiece, a book about jazz that is as big as America.

A rediscovered modern classic: a life-affirming account of one man's journey into blindness

*'*A gift to the whole of humanity' Cathy Rentzenbrink

Days before the birth of his first son, writer and academic John M. Hull started to go blind. He would lose his sight entirely, unable to distinguish any sense of light or shadow. Isolated and claustrophobic, he sank into a deep depression. Soon, he had forgotten what his wife and daughter looked like.

In Notes on Blindness, John reveals his profound sense of loss, his altered perceptions of time and space, of waking and sleeping, love and companionship. With astonishing lucidity of thought and no self-pity, he describes the horror of being faceless, and asks what it truly means to be a husband and father. And eventually, he finds a new way of experiencing the world, of seeing the light.

Based on John's diaries recorded on audio tape, this is a profoundly moving, wise and life-affirming account of one man's journey into blindness.

'Poignant and wise' Andrew Solomon

Published in partnership with Wellcome Collection.

Katrina slammed the door of her apartment close and breathed a sigh of relief. Finally a long, exhausting, tiring day was over.

She'd been running through the storm that suddenly came to get a taxi, but still a middle-aged man in a gray coat and a business man's air had blown it under her nose just as she was about to enter. So she was standing in the rain yelling at the arrogant gentleman even though he and the taxi were too far away to hear her now. Katrina cursed her habit of ignoring the black clouds outside and therefore of not carrying the umbrella, mentally calling it a nuisance. She took off the soaked raincoat that her mother had given her last Christmas, in the end that present that at first glance she didn't like so much turned out to be very useful. Sure, he would have preferred those red, high-heeled heels , but he probably never would have had the courage to wear them.

Katrina squeezed her dripping hair on the carpet and was greeted by Lammy, her dog with a soft white fur. She went into the bathroom to fix herself up and take off her last damp clothes, while Lammy tried to get her attention by stealing her clothes from the floor and carrying them around the small living room.

Katrina removed her makeup revealing two large brown eyes, the same color as her long hair, now a bit frizzy from the rain. She wasn't very tall and certainly would have gone unnoticed in a crowd, but she had a perfectly straight, sharp nose and a beautiful smile thanks to her regular, white teeth. Surely, if he had to indicate his strong point, it would have been the smile.

Elton John had arrived and the music world would never be the same again.

His life has been full of drama, from the early rejection of his work with songwriting partner Bernie Taupin to spinning out of control as a chart-topping superstar; from half-heartedly trying to drown himself in his LA swimming pool to disco-dancing with the Queen; from friendships with John Lennon, Freddie Mercury and George Michael to setting up his AIDS Foundation.
**“[Le Carr?’s] novels are so brilliant because they’re emotionally and psychologically absolutely true, but of course they’re novels.” ーNew York Times Book Review

A thrilling tale for our times from the undisputed master of the spy genre**

Nat, a 47 year-old veteran of Britain’s Secret Intelligence Service, believes his years as an agent runner are over.
Death Takes a Partner, first published in 1958, is part of the series of mysteries featuring private detective Dr. Priestley. Author John Rhode, a pen name of Cecil Street (1884-1964), was a prolific writer of mostly detective novels, publishing more than 140 books between 1924 and 1961. From the dustjacket: No two men could have been more opposite in every way than Wilfred and Clarence Cheriton. Wilfred, forever immersed in some engineering experiment, had little use for people and business activities, whereas Clarence was a sociable man with a gift for selling the products of the Cheriton Engineering Works, of which he and his cousins were partners. If only the two cousins could have made allowances for their differences, it was a partnership which should have worked well. But they couldn't, and the sudden death of Wilfred led Inspector James Waghorn of New Scotland Yard to make some very searching inquiries into the affairs of the Cheriton family. Once again, 'Jimmy' Waghorn is helped in his investigations by the enigmatic advice of Dr. Priestley, while Sergeant King's encyclopedic knowledge of the underworld plays its part in the solving of a particularly ingenious crime.
