The Trials of Five Queens Katherine of Aragon, Anne Boleyn, Mary Queen of Scots, Marie Antoinette and Catherine of Brunswick【電子書籍】[ R. Storry Deans ]
|

We, who have lived our lives under the golden rule of Victoria the Great and Edward the Peacemaker, who have seen royalty happy, fortunate and beneficent, can with difficulty imagine times when subjects rebelled, and when kings and queens were sent to the scaffold.

But, as R. Storry Deans shows in this far-encompassing and illuminating work, these five queens were less than happy and fortunate.

Connected across three countries and three centuries by their treatment and trials, Deans paints vivid portraits of the five women with the help of private letters and court transcripts that surrounded each trial.

With intimate details of the hearings that awaited them, The Trials of Five Queens recounts an informative and entertaining history of murder, adultery, divorce and revolution centred around royal women under intense scrutiny. Both a five-part biography of the queens as well as a study of the revered yet secretive and tumultuous institutions to which they belonged.

Joni The Creative Odyssey of Joni Mitchell【電子書籍】[ Katherine Monk ]
|

From the moment Joni Mitchell's career began - with coffee-house bookings, serendipitous encounters with established stars, and a recording contract that gave her full creative control over her music - the woman from the Canadian wheat fields has eluded industry cliches. When her peers were focused on feminism, Mitchell was plumbing the depths of her own human condition. When arena rock was king, she turned to jazz. When all others hailed Bob Dylan as a musical messiah, Mitchell saw a fraud burdened with halitosis. Unafraid to "write in her own blood," regardless of the cost, Mitchell has been vilified as a diva and embraced as a genius, but rarely has she been recognized as an artist and a thinker.

This new portrait of the reclusive icon examines how significant life events - failed relationships, the surrender of her infant daughter, debilitating sickness - have influenced her creative expression. Author Katherine Monk captures the rich legacy of her multifaceted subject in this offbeat account, weaving in personal reflections and astute cultural observations, and revealing the Mitchell who remains misunderstood.

|

Originally published in 1956, this is a critical analysis of the comedies of Aristophanes and Menander studied in the context of the history of comedy, of the allied arts, and of contemporary life.

Aristophanes and Menander are deservedly the most famous writers of Greek comedy. The extant comedies of Aristophanes are notable for wit, comical action, beautiful poetry, and the dramatization of such problems as health of mind and body, sex, money, government, law, religion, education, and drama, music and poetry. Menander portrays with delicate and sympathetic understanding a world in which the seeming evils of loss and discord eventually lead to the genuine goods of discovery and concord. The art of Aristophanes is critically examined in three chapters and that of Menander in one.

For centuries Dionysos had been worshipped in a spirit of ecstasy which manifested itself in song, dance and the wearing of masks and costumes, pantomime, farce, and satire. The processes by which these diverse elements were developed and fused into the complex literary form of Old Comedy are the subject of the first three chapters.

Aristophanes was not only pre-eminent as a writer of Old Comedy; he also participated in the transformation of Old Comedy into Middle Comedy, a curious and interesting dramatic form which is fully treated in the seventh chapter. In the last chapter the emergence of New Comedy is traced and the art of Menander criticized. The book ends with a brief indication of the various forms in which the spirit of Greek comedy had survived to the present day.

An Analysis of Geert Hofstede's Culture's Consequences Comparing Values, Behaviors, Institutes and Organizations across Nations【電子書籍】[ Katherine Erdman ]
|

The Dutch anthropologist Geert Hofstede is recognized as a pioneer in the fields of international management and social psychology ? and his work is a perfect example of the ways in which interpretative skills can help solve problems and provide the foundation for strong thinking and understanding both in business and beyond.

Hofstede’s central achievement was setting up an efficient interpretative framework for understanding the cultural differences between one country and another. Working for the international computing company IBM in the late 1960s, Hofstede noted that such cultural differences had huge consequences for international organizations. Up until then, while many inside and outside of business recognized the importance of these differences, little had been done to define precisely what cultural difference was and in what areas of life it was expressed. Hofstede’s insight was that if one could interpret and define the dimensions of cultural difference, it would be possible to measure them and act accordingly.

From a vast survey of IBM’s employees in several countries, Hofstede originally defined five dimensions of culture: every society could be rated for each dimension, providing a useful guide to the kinds of cultural differences at play. As ever, good interpretative skills provided the basis for better understanding.

The Global Wordsworth Romanticism Out of Place【電子書籍】[ Katherine Bergren ]
|

The Global Wordsworth charts the travels of William Wordsworth’s poetry around the English-speaking world. But, as Katherine Bergren shows, Wordsworth’s afterlives reveal more than his influence on other writers; his appearances in novels and essays from the antebellum U.S. to post-Apartheid South Africa change how we understand a poet we think we know. Bergren analyzes writers like Jamaica Kincaid, J. M. Coetzee, and Lydia Maria Child who plant Wordsworth in their own writing and bring him to life in places and times far from his ownーand then record what happens. By working beyond narratives of British influence, Bergren highlights a more complex dynamic of international response, in which later writers engage Wordsworth in conversations about slavery and gardening, education and daffodils, landscapes and national belonging. His global receptionーcritical, appreciative, and ambivalentーinspires us to see that Wordsworth was concerned not just with local, English landscapes and people, but also with their changing place in a rapidly globalizing world. This study demonstrates that Wordsworth is not tangential but rather crucial to our understanding of Global Romanticism.

Published by Bucknell University Press. Katherine Mansfield - The Short Stories - Volume 2 “When we begin to take our failures non-seriously, it means we are ceasing to be afraid of them.”?【電子書籍】[ Katherine Mansfield ]

The short story is often viewed as an inferior relation to the Novel. But it is an art in itself. To take a story and distil its essence into fewer pages while keeping character and plot rounded and driven is not an easy task. Many try and many fail. In this series we look at short stories from many of our most accomplished writers. Miniature masterpieces with a lot to say. In this volume we examine some of the short stories of Katherine Mansfield. She was born on 14th October 1888 into a prominent family in Wellington, New Zealand the middle child of five. A gifted Cellist, at one point she thought she might take it up professionally. However she had a gift for writing that was slowly developing and her first writings were published in school magazines. At 19 Katherine left for Great Britain and met the modernist writers D.H. Lawrence and Virginia Woolf with whom she became close friends. She travelled to Europe before returning to New Zealand in 1906 she began to write the short stories that she would later become famous for. Her stories often focus on moments of disruption and frequently open rather abruptly. By 1908 she had returned to London and to a rather more bohemian lifestyle. A passionate affair resulted in her becoming pregnant but married off instead to an older man who she left the same evening with the marriage unconsummated. She was then to miscarry and be cut out of her mothers’ will (allegedly because of her lesbianism). In 1911 she was to start a relationship with John Middleton Murry a magazine editor and although it was volatile it enabled her to write some of her best stories. During the First World War Mansfield contracted extrapulmonary tuberculosis, which rendered any return or visit to New Zealand impossible and led to her death at the tender age of 34 on January 9th 1923 in Fontainebleau, France画面が切り替わりますので、しばらくお待ち下さい。

Laos Folk-Lore of Farther India【電子書籍】[ Katherine Neville Fleeson ]
|

These Folk-Tales from the Laos country, a part of the kingdom of Siam, in addition to their intrinsic merit have the charm of complete novelty. Until the translator of this volume collected these stories, they were even unwritten, with a single exception which was found in a Laos manuscript. They are orally preserved in the provinces which constitute the Laos country, just as they have been handed down from generations of ancestors, with slight variations in words or incidents. The elders among the people tell the stories at their merrymakings around the camp-fires and within their primitive houses, to amuse and instruct the youth and children. Living among the Laos in the friendly and intimate relation of a missionary, the translator has had the advantage of long residence and unrivalled opportunity for understanding the history, customs, religious ideas and aspirations of this interesting people. Aptness in use of their colloquial speech gave her special facility for gathering the stories with exactness, as they 6 fell from the lips of the narrators in her hearing; and for the delicate additional task of translating them into English. The scholar, who is a student of the world’s Folk-Lore, may be assured that he has here, the Laos tales unobscured, just as they are told to-day. Reflecting, as they do, thoughts, desires and hopes common to our humanity, these stories at the same time exhibit, in a pathetic way, the need in Laos of the uplifting and transforming power of the Christian religion. Six of the Best by Katherine Mansfield【電子書籍】[ Katherine Mansfield ]

Six has always been a number we group things around ? Six of the best, six of one half a dozen of another, six feet under, six pack, six degrees of separation and a sixth sense are but a few of the ways we use this number.

Such is its popularity that we thought it is also a very good way of challenging and investigating an author’s work to give width, brevity, humour and depth across six of their very best.

In this series we gather together authors whose short stories both rivet the attention and inspire the imagination to visit their gems in a series of six, to roam across an author’s legacy in a few short hours and gain a greater understanding of their writing and, of course, to be lavishly entertained by their ideas, their narrative and their way with words.

These stories can be surprising and sometimes at a tangent to what we expected, but each is fully formed and a marvellous adventure into the world and words of a literary master.

In Accra, where gleaming skyscrapers pierce the sky, a primal cry shatters the digital hum, drawing journalist Zuri into a world she'd long dismissed. Haunted by the recent loss of her grandmother, a keeper of ancient traditions, Zuri investigates a series of inexplicable tech malfunctions, sensing a deeper, more unsettling truth than mere glitches. Her quest leads her to Kofi, a brilliant innovator who merges ancestral wisdom with cutting-edge code, a man grappling with his own past failures and the ethical implications of his technological prowess. Together, they uncover a horrifying secret: the malfunctions are not random, but the distorted cries of ancestors trapped within the digital veil, manipulated by Elias, a forgotten scientist from Ghana's colonial past. Driven by a twisted obsession with immortality, Elias seeks to rewrite reality, merging the spectral and the digital into a terrifying new order.

Zuri and Kofi's investigation plunges them into Accra's vibrant heart, navigating bustling markets where ancient rituals thrive beneath the veneer of modernity, and sterile server rooms where Adinkra symbols manifest as corrupted code. Guided by the city's elders and AI imbued with ancestral knowledge, they decipher cryptic messages flickering across hacked screens, a palimpsest of the past overlaid onto the present. Zuri confronts her grief and the guilt of neglecting her grandmother's wisdom, while Kofi battles his past demons and the fear of becoming the very thing he fights against. As Elias’s influence spreads, distorting reality and threatening to erase Accra's identity, Zuri and Kofi must embrace their intertwined destinies. Their burgeoning love, a fragile bloom amidst the encroaching chaos, becomes a beacon of hope in a city teetering on the brink of digital oblivion. They must harness Zuri’s burgeoning ancestral power and Kofi's technological brilliance to confront Elias, not in a single battle, but in a complex dance of code and ritual, science and spirituality. Can they rewrite the narrative, not just of their own lives, but of Accra itself, before the echoes of the past consume the future?

Man-Eater The Terrifying True Story of Cannibal Killer Katherine Knight【電子書籍】[ Sophia Patel ]

One officer, his breath shallow, leaned in closer to inspect a large butcher’s knife. It had been used, not just for cutting, but for carving. There was no mistaking it.

The hilt was covered in dark red splotches that had dried into thick clumps. The officer’s stomach churned as he turned away, only to be met with something that made his skin crawl even more.

On the counter, surrounded by the knives, was a plate. A strange, unholy plate.

It was full of meat. Gristly, raw meat. It looked as though it had been hastily thrown togetherーchunks of flesh, slices of skin, and strips of muscle, some unrecognizable. The smell intensified as they moved closer. There was no mistaking it now. This wasn’t some butcher’s leftovers. It was human. And it was fresh.

One officer, his hand trembling, lifted the lid. The smell hit them immediatelyーa nauseating, putrid stench that made their stomachs turn. It wasn’t just blood, wasn’t just flesh. It was something else. It was the unmistakable scent of something cooked, of meat being prepared for consumption.

They leaned in closer, their eyes widening as they saw itーthe contents of the pot.
Inside, boiled human organs were carefully arranged, their shapes unmistakable. The liver, the kidneys. They were all there, simmering in what appeared to be some sort of broth. The meat had been tenderized, and softened as if it had been prepared for someone to feast upon.On the counter, surrounded by the knives, was a plate. Looking for Revolution, Finding Murder The Crimes and Transformation of Katherine Ann Power【電子書籍】[ Janet Landman ]
|

Katherine Power, while a college senior, drove the getaway car in a violent bank robbery committed in the name of revolution. One of Power's accomplices shot and killed Boston police officer and father of nine, Walter Schroeder. Power went underground. She was on the FBI’s Most Wanted list longer than any other woman in history. Her surrender 23 years later was national news. Looking for Revolution, Finding Murder explores how Power came to do grave harm and how she went about a moral reckoning. Janet Landman traces how Power transformed herself from idealistic antiwar activist, to armed revolutionary, to long-term fugitive, to voluntary but defiant convict. It took years in prison doing what Power called "conscience work" before she took full responsibility for the ruin she had wrought. Landman lays out with precision, depth, and nuance Katherine Power's rocky pilgrimage toward moral reckoning. Looking for Revolution, Finding Murder reveals how criminals, sinners, and wrong-doersーall of usーcan re-make ourselves as decent human beingsーflawed and worthy, scarred and repaired. And something like redeemed.

"I spent much of the decade of the 1970s with a foot, and a big part of my brain, in one underground or another, whether it was connected to the Weathermen, the Black Panthers, or Timothy Leary’s clandestine network. Since then I’ve read much about underground groups. I have also written on the subject of fugitives, outlaws and prisoners. Janet Landman’s book is the most cogent account of the radical underground of the 1970s that I have ever read. It is thoughtful, profound and thought-provoking. Call it 'a meditation on the American fascination with violence' and an 'exploration of the nature of redemption.' By looking at the underground experience of Katherine Powerーa bank robber who was once on the FBI’s most wanted listーLandman maps the journey of one criminal/radical and at the same time illuminates a big chunk of the field of ethics. I hope that fugitives and outlaws from the past and today, too, will read this book, and that anyone who thinks that the underground life is romantic will find in its pages a sober account of what it means to be in hiding, to be hunted down and to spend years in prison and on probation. Landman calls Power 'a walking study in gray.' In Looking for Revolution, Finding Murder she has focused a light on all the shades of gray and suggested that we hold in abeyance notions of absolute evil or absolute good."ーJonah Raskin Professor Emeritus of communication studies at Sonoma State University, and author of For The Hell of It:The Life and Times of Abbie Hoffman and The Radical Jack London: Writings on War and Revolution

"Katherine Ann Power was a pious Catholic schoolgirl who became, over the course of her life, a terrorist, a fugitive from the law, an imprisoned convict, and finally a free woman. But her greatest transformation was an ethical one, as beautifully documented in Janet Landman’s analysis of Power’s twisting path to redemption. Landman draws on philosophy, psychology, and her own fine-tuned moral sensibility to shed light on a riveting life narrative forever framed in tragedy."ーDan P. McAdams, the Henry Wade Rogers Professor of Psychology at Northwestern University, and author of The Art and Science of Personality Development

"Looking for Revolution is a powerful, well-written story. In this age of moral confusion and mass incarceration, it exposes the dilemmas we face, wherever we stand. It contains, as it says, 'supremely important wisdom about keeping one's dissent constructive, nonviolent, open, and accountable;' and, to quote more, the lesson that 'reprobates, criminals, sinners and scoundrelsーthat is, all of usーcan re-make ourselves as good human beingsーflawed,' of course, but redeemable: in other words, that restorative justice is an idea whose time has come. Above all, it is very human. And as such, a story for all of us."ーMichael Nagler, Professor Emeritus of Classics and Comparative Literature at UC Berkeley, Founder and President of the Metta Ctr for Nonviolence, and author of The Search for a Nonviolent Future and The Nonviolence Handbook

"Walter Schroeder was husband to Marie and father to nine children, a heroic police officer killed in the line of duty. Katherine Power was complicit in his murder. Some will say that no good can come from a book about her, that it would only glorify the criminal and overshadow the memory of the victim, this great and good man. Looking for Revolution, Finding Murder will prove them wrong, for it is a biography of a conscience, of Power's reckoning with the damage she did and what she owed for itーto the Schroeder family, to society and the state, even, as she herself put it, “to the universe.” It also reflects the conscience of another woman, Janet Landman, who over years of research and hard thinking has scrupulously considered and reconsidered her appraisals of Power. Indeed, this book is a biography of conscience, periodーa bracing exploration of what it means to take responsibility, whoever you are, for whatever you’ve done or failed to do."ーChris Walsh, Director, College of Arts & Sciences Writing Program, Boston University, and author of Cowardice: A Brief History (Princeton University Press)

"“Years after Janet Landman’s phenomenal book Regret comes her carefully written and researched book on conscience. It is an in-depth study of one person’s conscience and ethical transformation. This book has arrived at a moment in history when a deeper look at protest, values, and conscience is more than necessary. Her subject, Katherine Power, is complex. Both Landman and Power keep in mind the tragic loss of Officer Schroeder that was the result of Power’s illegal acts. But Landman’s voice, both poetic and grounded in social science, is an honest one and her focus is primarily on Power. It is a book that believes in human development, in taking responsibility and making reparation. A meditation, it is also a thorough analysis of regret, forgiveness, idealism, and foolishness.”ー-Sharon Lamb, EdD, PhD, Professor and Licensed Psychologist, University of Massachusetts Boston, and author of Before Forgiving and The Trouble with Blame: Victims, Perpetrators, and Responsibility.

"In her engrossing psycho-biographical immersion into Katherine Power’s remarkable life, Janet Landman shows how a redemptive self comes to be. Through years of what Power called 'conscience work,' she succeeded in integrating crimes, complexities, and pain into a new, deeply attuned level of moral awareness."ーPaul Wink, Professor of Psychology, Wellesley College

Disknowledge Literature, Alchemy, and the End of Humanism in Renaissance England【電子書籍】[ Katherine Eggert ]
|

"Disknowledge": knowing something isn't true, but believing it anyway. In Disknowledge: Literature, Alchemy, and the End of Humanism in Renaissance England, Katherine Eggert explores the crumbling state of learning in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. Even as the shortcomings of Renaissance humanism became plain to see, many intellectuals of the age had little choice but to treat their familiar knowledge systems as though they still held. Humanism thus came to share the status of alchemy: a way of thinking simultaneously productive and suspect, reasonable and wrongheaded.

Eggert argues that English writers used alchemy to signal how to avoid or camouflage pressing but discomfiting topics in an age of rapid intellectual change. Disknowledge describes how John Donne, George Herbert, Henry Vaughan, John Dee, Christopher Marlowe, William Harvey, Helkiah Crooke, Edmund Spenser, and William Shakespeare used alchemical imagery, rhetoric, and habits of thought to shunt aside three difficult questions: how theories of matter shared their physics with Roman Catholic transubstantiation; how Christian Hermeticism depended on Jewish Kabbalah; and how new anatomical learning acknowledged women's role in human reproduction. Disknowledge further shows how Shakespeare, Ben Jonson, and Margaret Cavendish used the language of alchemy to castigate humanism for its blind spots and to invent a new, posthumanist mode of knowledge: writing fiction.

Covering a wide range of authors and topics, Disknowledge is the first book to analyze how English Renaissance literature employed alchemy to probe the nature and limits of learning. The concept of disknowledgeーwillfully adhering to something we know is wrongーresonates across literary and cultural studies as an urgent issue of our own era.

Women of Courage Inspiring Stories from the Women Who Lived Them【電子書籍】[ Katherine Martin ]
|

The 41 ordinary and well-known women honored in this first book in New World Library's "People Who Dare" series have shown forms of bravery that, according to editor Martin, go largely unrecognized ー such as persevering in adverse circumstances, challenging tradition, showing vulnerability, fostering healing, and listening to one's heart. Concern about her children's education impelled Patty Murray (currently U.S. Senator from Washington) to run against an incumbent and win a seat in her state senate. Acting out of a deeply felt commitment to the poor, Dr. Janelle Goetcheus, along with other physicians she recruited, founded Christ House, a renovated apartment building where seriously ill homeless patients stay and receive care. After she was diagnosed with breast cancer, Laura Evans celebrated her survival by founding Expedition Inspiration, an organization that takes breast cancer survivors on mountain climbs. Cora Lee Johnson's longtime dream of starting a community sewing center became a reality when she was 62 because, although poor and uneducated, she persevered by talking about the center to anyone who would listen. Men and women both will find inspiration for their own lives in these captivating stories.
