The Ex-Boyfriend Yard Sale Finding a Formula for the Cost of Love【電子書籍】[ Haley McGee ]
|

In this hilarious and heartfelt memoir, Haley McGee sets out to calculateーwith mathematical precisionーthe exact cost of love, and whether all of her former relationships were worth it.

Haley McGee is in debt. The solution? A yard sale of gifts from her ex-boyfriends.

But when it comes to pricing, she gets stuck. Surely the ways we invest in our romantic relationships should be reflected in the price. But how? Is the mixtape from your first love worth more than the vintage typewriter from a philanderer? Does sitting on an X-Acto knife wedged between seats on a bus to see the boyfriend you lost your virginity to increase or decrease the value of the necklace he gave you? Should you be compensated for the miserable times or do they render an item worthless?

Haley decides to gamble on a larger payout. She interviews her exes and enlists the help of a mathematician to create a formulaーwith eighty-six variablesーfor the cost of love. As she's searching for answers, the one that got away reappears with a new proposition.

Female desire, heartbreak and the chance for integrity in the aftermath of both are held up in this whipsmart, original and daringly candid memoir. As Haley McGee interrogates her romantic triumphs and failures with unflinching detail and hilarity, her exquisite prose elevates this all too human conundrum: Is love worth it?

This Is God's Table Finding Church Beyond the Walls【電子書籍】[ Anna Woofenden ]
|

Can a barren city lot become a church?

This is the story of an audacious journey. It’s the story of what happens when people garden, worship, and eat togetherーand invite anyone and everyone to join them. In This Is God’s Table, writer and pastor Anna Woofenden describes the way that the wealthy and the poor, the aged and the young, the housed and unhoused become a community in this once-empty lot. Together they plant and sustain a thriving urban farm, worship God, and share a weekly meal. Together they craft a shared life and a place of authenticity where all are welcome. Readers of Nadia Bolz-Weber, Sara Miles, and Diana Butler Bass will find here a kindred vision for a church without walls.

As churches across the Western world wither, what would it take to find a raw, honest, gritty way of doing churchーone rooted in place, nurtured by grace, and grounded in God’s expansive love? What would it take to carry the liturgy outside the gates? What if we were to discover that in feeding others, we are fed?

This is God’s table. Come and eat.

The Heart and Flow of Motherhood A Memoir of Textbooks, Tears and Tiny Little Fingers【電子書籍】[ Angelena Davies ]
|

Angelena Davies had seven years of study under her belt, two young children at home, and a fisherman husband away for weeks at a time. Life was manic like a triple shot latte, but she relished in the busyness of Motherhood. Those tiny little fingers were her everything. Yet something was kindling deep within her belly. She didn’t know it at the time (hell, how could she, she was too busy wiping the kitchen bench ? AGAIN) but she was being called to find her purpose, beyond motherhood and wifery.

Late one night as Angie was procrastinating over folding the washing, she found herself surfing the net and accidentally discovered a $12,000 scholarship for a Masters thesis… the kindling was ignited. Unlike most good fires though, this one exploded and wrecked her health, her confidence, her self-awareness and her mascara ? the organic one that costs twice as much.

Despite it being the 21st Century already, and women meant to be liberated and free… Angie discovers that her own ideas about what it means to be a good mother threaten to undermine her ability to complete the Masters.

Something has to give. Will it be mothering? Or studying?

Find out in this funny, insightful, poignant, and heart-wrenching memoir as Angie takes you into the heart of her experience as a studying mother, revealing that taming the dragon of self-doubt and developing the gift of intuition makes mothering more fulfilling, less guilty, much calmer and easier ? and with so much more flow.

Mr. Rabbit at Home: A Sequel to Little Mr. Thimblefinger and his Queer Country【電子書籍】[ Joel Chandler Harris ]
|

When Buster John and Sweetest Susan and Drusilla returned home after their first visit to Mr. Thimblefinger’s queer country, a curious thing happened. The children had made a bargain to say nothing about what they had seen and heard, but one day, when there was nobody else to hear what she had to say, Sweetest Susan concluded to tell her mother something about the visit she had made next door to the world. So she began and told about the Grandmother of the Dolls, and about Little Mr. Thimblefinger, and all about her journey under the spring. Her mother paid no attention at first, but after awhile she became interested, and listened intently to everything her little daughter said. Sometimes she looked serious, sometimes she smiled, and sometimes she laughed. Sweetest Susan couldn’t remember everything, but she told enough to astonish her mother. “Darling, when did you dream such nonsense as that?” the lady asked. “Oh, it wasn’t a dream, mamma,” cried Sweetest Susan. “I thought it was a dream at first, but it turned out to be no dream at all. Now, please don’t ask brother about it, and please don’t ask Drusilla, for we promised one another to say nothing about it. I didn’t intend to tell you, but I forgot and began to tell you before I thought.” A little while afterward Sweetest Susan’s mother was telling her husband about the wonderful imagination of their little daughter, and then the neighbors got hold of it, and some of the old ladies put their heads together over their teacups and said it was a sign that Sweetest Susan was too smart to stay in this world very long. One day, while Drusilla was helping about the house, Sweetest Susan’s mother took occasion to ask her where she and the children went the day they failed to come to dinner.

Jobless in Gainesville Finding Meaningful Work and Our Place in the Sun【電子書籍】[ Rene G. Parent ]
|

Writing is a conversation with life, our life. It's my hope you recognize yourself within the pages, within the story, within the conversation. I've written a letter to my niece who sweats jobless in Gainesville. I've written on parts of my life as a stay at home parent. I've written on the writing process itself. Though seasons change, what remains is our unity, the human connection, the people who people our lives. I've written on finding meaningful work and finding our place in the sun. Work uniquely defines us. Finding our ideal place to live is a luxury we give to ourselves. I've written on the writing process. Writing is a conversation, more the listening part however. Much like music, and those distant planes, life is readily available as backdrop to our writing. Still we must pause to notice. Enjoy listening along. May it be music to your ears, compelling to read, empowering to your life. My wife says it's called listening.

Little Mr. Thimblefinger and His Queer Country【電子書籍】[ Joel Chandler Harris ]
|

Once upon a time there lived on a plantation, in the very middle of Middle Georgia, a little girl and a little boy and their negro nurse. The little girl’s name was Sweetest Susan. That was the name her mother gave her when she was a baby, and she was so good-tempered that everybody continued to call her Sweetest Susan when she grew older. She was seven years old. The little boy’s name was Buster John. That was the name his father had given him. Buster John was eight. The nurse’s name was Drusilla, and she was twelve. Drusilla was called a nurse, but that was just a habit people had. She was more of a child than either Sweetest Susan or Buster John, but she was very much larger. She was their playmateーtheir companion, and a capital one she made. Sweetest Susan had black hair and dark eyes like her father, while Buster John had golden hair and brown eyes like his mother. As for Drusilla, she was as black as the old black cat, and always in a good humor, except when she pretended to be angry. Sweetest Susan had wonderful dark eyes that made her face very serious except when she laughed, but she was as full of fun as Buster John, who was always in some sort of mischief that did nobody any harm. These children were not afraid of anything. They scorned to run from horses, or cows, or dogs. They were born on the big plantation, and they spent the greater part of the day out of doors, save when the weather was very cold or very wet. They had no desire to stay in the house, except when they were compelled to go to bed, and a great many times they fretted a little because they thought bedtime came too soon. Sweetest Susan had a great many dolls, and she was very fond of them. She had a China Doll, a Jip-jap Doll, a Rag Doll, a Rubber Doll, a White Doll, a Brown Doll, and a Black Doll. Sometimes she and Drusilla would play with the Dolls out in the yard, and sometimes Buster John would join them when he had nothing better to do. But every evening Sweetest Susan and Drusilla would carry the Dolls into the bedroom and place them side by side against the wall. Sweetest Susan wanted them placed there, she said, so she could see her children the last thing at night and the first thing in the morning. But one night Sweetest Susan went to bed crying, and this was so unusual that Drusilla forgot to put the Dolls in their places. Sweetest Susan’s feelings were hurt. She had not been very good, and her mother had called her Naughty Susan instead of Sweetest Susan. Buster John, in the next room, wanted to know what the matter was, but Sweetest Susan wouldn’t tell him, and neither would she tell Drusilla. After a while Sweetest Susan’s mother came in and kissed her. That helped her some, but she lay awake ever so long sobbing a little and thinking how she must do so as not to be called Naughty Susan.

At Home in Exile Finding Jesus among My Ancestors and Refugee Neighbors【電子書籍】[ Russell Jeung ]

Russell Jeung's spiritual memoir shares the difficult, often joyful, and sometimes harrowing account of his life in East Oakland's Murder Dubs neighborhood and of his Chinese-Hakka history.

On a journey to discover how the poor and exiled are blessed, At Home in Exile is the story of his integration of social activism and a stubborn evangelical faith.

Holding English classes in his apartment (which doubled as a food pantry for a local church) for undocumented Latino neighbors and Cambodian refugees, battling drug dealers who threatened him, exorcising a spirit possessing a teen, and winning a landmark housing settlement against slumlords with a gathering of his neighborsーJeung's story is, by turns, moving and inspiring, traumatic and exuberant.

As Jeung retraces the steps of his Chinese-Hakka family and his refugee neighbors, weaving the two narratives together, he asks difficult questions about longing and belonging, wealth and poverty, and how living in exile can transform your faith:

"Not only did relocation into the inner city press me toward God, but it made God's words more distinct and clear to me...As I read Scriptures through the eyes of those around meーrefugees and aliensーGod spoke loudly to me his words of hope and truth."

With humor, humility, and keen insight, he describes the suffering and the sturdiness of those around him and of his family. He relates the stories of forced relocation and institutional discrimination, of violence and resistance, and of the persistence of Christ's love for the poor.

Galileo's Middle Finger Heretics, Activists, and One Scholar's Search for Justice【電子書籍】[ Alice Dreger ]

|

**New York Times Book Review
"[S]mart, delightful... a splendidly entertaining education in ethics, activism and science.”

Editors's Choice, New York Times Book Review**

An impassioned defense of intellectual freedom and a clarion call to intellectual responsibility, Galileo’s Middle Finger is one American’s eye-opening story of life in the trenches of scientific controversy. For two decades, historian Alice Dreger has led a life of extraordinary engagement, combining activist service to victims of unethical medical research with defense of scientists whose work has outraged identity politics activists. With spirit and wit, Dreger offers in Galileo’s Middle Finger an unforgettable vision of the importance of rigorous truth seeking in today’s America, where both the free press and free scholarly inquiry struggle under dire economic and political threats.

This illuminating chronicle begins with Dreger’s own research into the treatment of people born intersex (once called hermaphrodites). Realization of the shocking surgical and ethical abuses conducted in the name of “normalizing” intersex children’s gender identities moved Dreger to become an internationally recognized patient rights’ activist. But even as the intersex rights movement succeeded, Dreger began to realize how some fellow progressive activists were employing lies and personal attacks to silence scientists whose data revealed uncomfortable truths about humans. In researching one such case, Dreger suddenly became the target of just these kinds of attacks.

Troubled, she decided to try to understand moreーto travel the country to ferret out the truth behind various controversies, to obtain a global view of the nature and costs of these battles. Galileo’s Middle Finger describes Dreger’s long and harrowing journeys between the two camps for which she felt equal empathy: social justice activists determined to win and researchers determined to put hard truths before comfort. Ultimately what emerges is a lesson about the intertwining of justice and of truthーand a lesson of the importance of responsible scholars and journalists to our fragile democracy.

Booklist (starred review)
"A crusader in the mold of muckrackers from a century ago, Dreger doesn’t try to hide her politics or her agenda. Robinson Crusoe's Money: The Remarkable Financial Fortunes and Misfortunes of a Remote Island Community【電子書籍】[ David Ames Wells ]

|

All who have read “Robinson Crusoe” (and who has not?) will remember the circumstance of his opening, some time after he had become domiciled on his desolate island, one of the chests that had come to him from the ship. In it he found pins, needles and thread, a pair of large scissors, “ten or a dozen good knives,” some cloth, about a dozen and a half of white linen handkerchiefs concerning which he remarks, “They were exceedingly refreshing to wipe my face on a warm day;” and, finally, hidden away in the till of the chest, “three great bags of moneyーgold as well as silver.” The finding of all these articlesーthe money exceptedーit will be further remembered, greatly delighted the heart of Crusoe; inasmuch as they increased his store of useful things, and therefore increased his comfort and happiness. But in respect to the money the case was entirely different. It was a thing to him, under the circumstances, absolutely worthless, and over its presence and finding he soliloquized as follows: “I smiled at myself at the sight of all this money. ‘Oh, drug!’ said I, aloud, ‘what art thou good for? Thou art not worth to me, no, not the taking off the ground. One of these knives is worth all this heap. Nay, I would give it all for a gross of tobacco-pipes; for sixpenny-worth of turnip and carrot seed from England; or for a handful of pease and beans, and a bottle of ink.’” In introducing this episode in the life of his hero, nothing was probably further from the thought of the author, De Foe, than the intent to give his readers a lesson in political economy. And yet it would be difficult to find an illustration which conveys in so simple a manner to him who reflects upon it so much of information in respect to the nature of that which is popularly termed “wealth;” or so good a basis for reasoning correctly in respect to the origin and function of that which we call “money.” And in such reasoning, the truth of the following propositions is too evident to require demonstration: 1st. The pins and needles, the scissors, knives, and cloth were of great utility to Robinson Crusoe, because their possession satisfied a great desire on his part to have them, and greatly increased his comfort and happiness. 2d. Possessing utility, they nevertheless possessed no exchangeable value, because they could not be bought or sold, or, what is the same thing, exchanged with any body for any thing. 3d. They had, moreover, no price, for they had no purchasing power which could be expressed as money. 4th. The money, which is popularly regarded as the symbol and the concentration of all wealth, had, under the circumstances, neither utility, value, nor price. It could not be eaten, drunk, worn, used as a tool, or exchanged with any body for any thing, and fully merited the appellation which Crusoe in another place gives it, of “sorry, worthless stuff.” Finally, the pins, needles, knives, cloth, and scissors were all capital to Robinson Crusoe, because they were all instrumentalities capable of being used to produce something additional, to him useful or desirable. The money was not capital, under the circumstances, because it could not be used to produce any thing. Starting, then, with a condition of things on the island in which money had clearly neither utility nor value, let us next consider under what change of domestic circumstances it could become useful, acquire value, become an object of exchange, and constitute a standard for establishing prices.

Our Little Finnish Cousin【電子書籍】[ Clara Vostrovsky Winlow ]

Finland is one of the little countries in whose struggles for greater freedom the world is interested to-day. It is situated on the northeast shore of the Baltic Sea, and is bounded by Russia, Norway and Sweden, the Gulf of Bothnia and the Gulf of Finland. A maze of rocks and small, pine-covered islands form a ring around the coast. The art of navigating between these requires much skill and long apprenticeship, so that it is no wonder that Finland, among other things, is noted for her pilots. "Forest, rock, and water" is the way in which one writer describes Finland. This little country, known all over the world for its progressive ideas, is thinly inhabited, having only one city, the capital Helsingfors, of any size. Over eighty-six per cent. of the people are Finnish, twelve per cent. Swedish, and the rest Russians, Germans, and Lapps. Little is known of Finnish history before the twelfth century, when King Eric of Sweden invaded the land to Christianize the inhabitants. Swedish settlements followed and Finland became a province of Sweden. It remained that for six hundred years, during which time there were constant conflicts between the Russians and Swedes for the possession of Finnish ports.

This memoir is a collection of true stories and events experienced by a Las Vegas gondolier named Umberto, whom I have formed a close friendship with over the years. Having worked as a gondolier for over ten years, Umberto has been made privy to countless stories from real life couples about where they first met and how they found love. He has also given me a glimpse into the fascinating life of a gondolier. His remarkable experiences and the captivating stories he tells of the people he meets from all over the world have inspired me to write this book. Included among the chapters are stories of how people find love, marriage proposals, celebrity encounters, Q&A sections, gondolier characteristics, the top ten ways people meet, and more! Essentially, I hope to shed some light on many issues of love and inspire and entertain you along the way! Many people are curious about the gondoliers in Las Vegas, and some even wonder if the gondoliers are real people or just a bunch of actors. All I have to say about that is--Umberto is as real as I am!
