Set against the tumultuous backdrop of 11th-century England, "Hereward, the Last of the English" is a historical novel that intertwines myth and reality to recount the life of Hereward, a legendary figure who becomes a symbol of resistance against Norman conquest. Kingsley employs a rich, evocative literary style, blending poetic descriptions with vivid historical detail, to immerse the reader in a world of chivalry, courage, and the struggle for identity. The narrative weaves various themes such as nationalism, loyalty, and the human spirit's resilience, contributing to its status as a significant work in Victorian literature amid growing concerns about one's national identity post-Industrial Revolution. Charles Kingsley, a prominent Victorian author, social reformer, and clergyman, was deeply influenced by the pastoral landscape of his upbringing and a keen interest in national history. His experiences as a champion of the working class and advocate for social change fueled his desire to resurrect the spirit of English valor and heritage, which is palpably felt throughout this novel. Kingsley'??s commitment to infusing his narratives with moral and ethical inquiries positions "Hereward" as more than just a historical retelling but a reflection of his own values. This book is an essential read for anyone interested in historical fiction that not only entertains but educates about the complexities of cultural identity and resilience. Kingsley's nuanced portrayal of Hereward allows readers to explore the depths of rebellion and sacrifice, making it an engaging addition to the canon of English literature and a compelling reflection on the timeless themes of struggle and resistance.

This carefully crafted ebook: "Rappaccini's Daughter (Unabridged)" is formatted for your eReader with a functional and detailed table of contents. Excerpt: "Does this garden belong to the house?" asked Giovanni. "Heaven forbid, signor, unless it were fruitful of better pot herbs than any that grow there now," answered old Lisabetta. "No; that garden is cultivated by the own hands of Signor Giacomo Rappaccini, the famous doctor, who, I warrant him, has been heard of as far as Naples." (Rappaccini's Daughter) "Rappaccini's Daughter" is the story of Beatrice, the daughter of Giacomo Rappaccini, who is in turn a medical researcher in medieval Padua and grows a garden of poisonous plants. American novelist and short story writer Nathaniel Hawthorne's (1804?1864) writing centers on New England, many works featuring moral allegories with a Puritan inspiration. Hawthorne has also written a few poems which many people are not aware of. His works are considered to be part of the Romantic movement and, more specifically, Dark romanticism. His themes often centre on the inherent evil and sin of humanity, and his works often have moral messages and deep psychological complexity.

Fact and fiction start to entwine....

Paul Doherty relates the Franklin's tale in A Tournament of Murders - a tale of mystery and murder as he goes on pilgrimage from London to Canterbury. Perfect for fans of Ellis Peters and Susanna Gregory.

Chaucer's pilgrims are sheltering in a friary as they slowly wind their way towards Canterbury. As they settle for the night, away from the darkness outside and the shadowy figures that haunt the lanes and byways of medieval England, the Franklin narrates a mysterious, bloody tale - a true story, he suggests, which not only affects his own life, but the lives of some of his fellow pilgrims...

In 1356 the Black Prince has won his resounding victory at Poitiers. However, in that bloody fight, the impoverished knight Gilbert Savage received his death wound. As Gilbert lies dying in a ditch he tells his squire, Richard Greenele, that the story of his parents perishing during the plague is untrue. Richard, if he wishes to uncover what really happened, must travel to Colchester and seek out the lawyer Hugo Coticol who holds a sealed letter telling the truth of Richard's parentage and the dreadful secrets surrounding his father's disgraceful death. This document contains a most macabre confession and Richard finds himself a small step closer to discovering the truth, and compelled to avenge his father's name.

What readers are saying about Canterbury Tales Mysteries:
'A Tournament of Murders kept me guessing until the end'
'You can almost feel yourself there'
'Spellbinding'

The Clerical Proletariat and the Resurgence of Medieval English Poetry【電子書籍】[ Kathryn Kerby-Fulton ]
|

Despite the great literary achievements of Chaucer, Langland, and the Pearl Poet, Ricardian English books were still a niche market in 1400. As Kathryn Kerby-Fulton shows, however, their generation was transformational in nurturing the resurgence of English writing, in part as a result of the mass underemployment of clerks originally trained for the church but unable to find steady positions in it. Surviving instead as ecclesiastical or choral "piece workers," or in secular jobs in government or private households, this "clerical proletariat" lived and worked in liminal spaces between the ecclesiastical and lay world. And there the most enterprising found new materialーand new audiencesーfor poetry in English.

Since English book production in London prior to 1380 was rare, Kerby-Fulton's study begins in the prior century with great regional poets, revealing their early experimentation with a new poetics of vocational crisis. Preoccupied with underemployment, patronage, careerist ambition, alienation, and changing literary fashion, these thirteenth-century writers were choosing the more avant garde option of writing in English while feeling backwards to earlier tradition in works such as La?amon's Brut and The Owl and the Nightingale. These early experimenters invoked semi-remembered literary forms in a still evolving written vernacular, breaking ground for Ricardian writers, who turned to these conventions during the massive clerical unemployment of the Great Schism era. Kerby-Fulton's is the first study of Langland's legacy of articulating an authorial employment crisis, and its echoes in Hoccleve and Audelay. It also uses new tools for uncovering proletarian writers in unattributed Middle English works, including the famous Harley 2253 lyrics, the "York Realist's" Second Trial from the York Cycle, St. Erkenwald, and Wynnere and Wastour. Taking in proletarian themes, including class, meritocracy, the abuse of children ("Choristers' Lament"), the gig economy, precarity, and the breaking of intellectual elites (Book of Margery Kempe), The Clerical Proletariat and the Resurgence of Medieval English Poetry speaks to both past and present employment urgencies.

The Vernacular Aristotle Translation as Reception in Medieval and Renaissance Italy【電子書籍】[ Eugenio Refini ]
|

This book explores the ways in which Aristotle's legacy was appropriated and reshaped by vernacular readers in Medieval and Renaissance Italy. It considers translation in a broad sense, looking at commentaries, compendia, rewritings, and abridgments alongside vernacular versions of Aristotle's works. Translation is thus taken as quintessential to the very notion of reception, with a focus on the dynamics - cultural, social, material - that informed the appropriation and reshaping of the 'master of those who know' on the part of vernacular readers between 1250 and 1500. By looking at the proactive and transformative nature of reception, this book challenges traditional narratives about the period and identifies the theory and practice of translation as a liminal space that facilitated the interaction between lay readers and the academic context while fostering the legitimation of the vernacular as a language suitable for philosophical discourse.

Enacting the Bible in medieval and early modern drama【電子書籍】[ David Matthews ]

The thirteen chapters in this collection open up new horizons for the study of biblical drama by putting special emphasis on multitemporality, the intersections of biblical narrative and performance, and the strategies employed by playwrights to rework and adapt the biblical source material in Catholic, Protestant and Jewish culture. Aspects under scrutiny include dramatic traditions, confessional and religious rites, dogmas and debates, conceptualisations of performance, and audience response. The contributors stress the co-presence of biblical and contemporary concerns in the periods under discussion, conceiving of biblical drama as a central participant in the dynamic struggle to both interpret and translate the Bible.

Medieval Scholarship Biographical Studies on the Formation of a Discipline: Religion and Art【
|

This is the third of a three-volume set on medieval scholarship that presents original biographical essays on scholars whose work has shaped medieval studies for the past four hundred years. A companion to Volume 1: History and Volume 2: Literature and Philology, Volume 3: Philosophy and the Arts covers the lives of twenty eminent individuals-from Victor Cousin (1792-1867) to Georges Chehata Anawati (1905-1994) in Philosophy; from H.J.W. Tillyard (1881-1968) to Gustave Reese (1899-1977) in Music; and from Alois Riegl (1858-1905) to Louis Grodecki (1910-1982) in Art History-whose subjects were the art, music, and philosophical thought of Europe between 500-1500. The scholars of medieval philosophy strove to identify the nexus of philosophical truth, whether they were engaged in the clash of the Christian church and secular republicanism as reflected in the tension between theology and philosophy, in addressing the conflicting perceptions of Muslim identity, or in defining Jewish philosophical theology in non-Jewish culture. Medieval musicologists, who are included as the subjects of the essays, pioneered or recontextualized traditional views on the definition of music as subject matter, on the relationship between music and philosophical concepts, on interpretative distinctions between secular and sacred music, monophony and polyphony, and concepts of form and compositional style. The art historians treated in this volume not only overturn the view of medieval art as an aesthetic decline from classical art, but they demonstrate the continual development of form and style inclusive of minor and major arts, in textiles, architecture and architectural sculpture, manuscripts, ivory carvings, and stained glass. The philosophers, musicologists, and art historians who appear in Volume 3 worked in three newly-emerging disciplines largely of nineteenth-century origin. In their distinguished and extraordinary output of energy in scholarly and academic arenas, they contributed significantly to the emergence and formation of medieval studies as the prime discipline of historical inquiry into and hence the key to understanding of the human experience.

Revival: The Facetiae of Poggio and Other Medieval Story-tellers (1928)【電子書籍】[ Poggio Bracciolini, ]
|

The facetie, as a literary form, has an ancient lineage, while, if we regard it merely as a humorous tale or jocular anecdote, its history must be almost as old as the first laughs and smiles of prehistoric man. To go back no further, we may trace it in a direct line through Latin literature, to the Greek apopthegm. Facetiae, in the literary sense, are also to be found in Oriental literature, espeically the Persian and the Arabian.

The Greek apopthegm and its Roman successor had a different character from the Florentine facetia, but the difference is one rather of matter than form. The ribald, licentious note is not so common in the classic facetaie, and the historical anecdotes treating of kings, princes, and persons of high estate were mostly reverent and often adulatory. Satire and disrespect appeared in the humorous tales of Poggio and his peers. The apopthegm was, as a rule, a brief narrative, as often as not enclosing a moral lesson in an historical anecdote. Or else it was the saying of some wise or great man.

In "Poems By the Way," William Morris presents a collection of lyrical verses that reflect his deep appreciation for nature, love, and the ephemeral moments of life. This work, characterized by its rich imagery and rhythmic language, captures the essence of the Pre-Raphaelite movement, intertwining themes of beauty and social critique. Morris'??s engagement with medievalism and his nuanced reflections on contemporary issues are particularly evident, as he juxtaposes vivid portrayals of the natural world with a longing for a more harmonious society.
From #1 New York Times bestselling author Brandon Sandersonーcreator of the smash-hit science fiction and fantasy series Skyward, The Stormlight Archive, and Mistbornーcomes a new science fiction adventure.

A man awakens in a clearing in what appears to be medieval England with no memory of who he is, where he came from, or why he is there. Chased by a group from his own time, his sole hope for survival lies in regaining his missing memories, making allies among the locals, and perhaps even trusting in their superstitious boasts. His only help from the “real world” should have been a guidebook entitled The Frugal Wizard’s Handbook for Surviving Medieval England, except his copy exploded during transit. The few fragments he managed to save provide clues to his situation, but can he figure them out in time to survive?

Note from Brandon:

Sometimes an idea just won’t let go of you for years. The initial seed of this novel was the title that eventually turned into The Frugal Wizard’s Handbook for Surviving Medieval England. At first there was no story to go with that title, but I wrote it down and kept coming back to it, wondering what that book could possibly be about. Something else I thought about off and on for years was the classic concept of a man waking up in another time and another place, with no idea how he got there. It was when those two ideas came together, and I placed a book with that title into that man’s hands, that this novel was born. I hope you’ll have as much fun with it as I did!

Neomedievalism, Popular Culture, and the Academy From Tolkien to Game of Thrones【電子書籍】[ Kelly Ann Fitzpatrick ]

The medieval in the modern world is here explored in a variety of media, from film and book to gaming.

Medievalism - the ways in which post-medieval societies perceive, interpret, reimagine, or appropriate the Middle Ages - permeates popular culture. From Disney princesses to Game of Thrones, medieval fairs to World of Warcraft, contemporary culture keeps finding new ways to reinvent and repackage the period. Medievalism itself, then, continues to evolve while it is also subject to technological advances, prominent invocations in political discourse, and the changing priorities of the academy. This has led some scholars to adopt the term "neomedievalism", a concept originating in part from the work of the late Umberto Eco, which calls for new avenues of inquiry into the wayswe think about the medieval.
This book examines recent evolutions of (neo)medievalism across multiple media, from Tolkien's Lord of the Rings to the film Beowulf and medieval gaming. These evolutions can take the form of what one might consider to be pop culture objects of critique (art, commodity, amusement park, video game) or academic tools of critique (monographs, articles, lectures, university seminars). It is by reconciling theseseemingly disparate forms that we can better understand the continual, interconnected, and often politicized reinvention of the Middle Ages in both popular and academic culture.

KELLYANN FITZPATRICK is an affiliated researcher at the Georgia Institute of Technology.

Bestsellers and masterpieces: The changing medieval canon addresses the strange fact that, in both European and Middle Eastern medieval studies, those texts that we now study and teach as the most canonical representations of their era were in fact not popular or even widely read in their day. On the other hand, those texts that were popular, as evidenced by the extant manuscript record, are taught and studied with far less frequency. The book provides cross-cultural insight into both the literary tastes of the medieval period and the literary and political forces behind the creation of the ‘modern canon’ of medieval literature.

In "Jeanne D'Arc: her life and death," Margaret Oliphant provides a richly woven narrative that captures the essence of Joan of Arc's extraordinary life and the complex socio-political landscape of 15th-century France. Oliphant employs a blend of biographical detail and historical analysis, utilizing a lyrical style that elevates Joan's story beyond mere chronicling to a profound exploration of heroism, faith, and martyrdom. The book is set against the backdrop of the Hundred Years' War, where Oliphant seeks to illuminate the interplay between Joan's divine visions and her role as a national figure, ultimately portraying her as a symbol of resistance and resilience amidst turmoil. Margaret Oliphant (1828-1897) was a prolific Scottish author and a keen observer of her era. Her deep engagement with historical themes, often inspired by her own life experiences of loss and struggle, shaped her depiction of iconic figures like Joan of Arc. Oliphant'??s own exploration of women's roles in literature and society informs her empathetic portrayal of Joan, delineating the complexities of her character in contrast to the rigid gender norms of their respective times. For readers interested in historical biographies that delve into the lives of remarkable women, "Jeanne D'Arc: her life and death" is an indispensable work that combines scholarly rigor with evocative storytelling.
Catherine's lips tightened at the tone of Anne's voice. She was speaking to her as if she were a servant. But she said nothing, only turned and walked out the door after patting Anne reassuringly on the shoulder.

She hurried down the stairs, not even bothering to tuck her hair back into place. She had left it unbound, not expecting visitors, and when she entered the courtyard, it tumbled about her shoulders in an unruly cloud of sable.

It seemed that Catherine became aware of Fallon at the same time he looked up to see her walking across the courtyard. She could see his eyes flick over her from head to toe and she thought she saw a glimmer of distaste pass over his features. Hell and damnation. The man always seems to have me at a disadvantage, Catherine thought furiously. I haven't used vulgar language, since that day at Dilham and just the sight of him has me swearing like a soldier.

At that moment, Fallon removed his helm, shaking his long, black hair loose. It is him! Catherine screamed in her mind, not sure that she had not screamed out loud. The thought of Dilham, coupled with his actions, made the connection in her mind, and she knew without a doubt that Fallon was the lion of her nightmares.

Kyle was watching Catherine intently. First, she blushed to the roots of her hair. Then she stopped dead in her tracks and her face turned a deathly white. Afraid that she was about to swoon, he started toward her, hoping to reach her before she fell to the ground and injured herself.

Seeing Kyle bearing down on her, Catherine's mind went blank with horror and she fainted straight into his arms.

Offers a nuanced reading of character and subjectivity in medieval romance via an exploration of its conventions.

Medieval romances can be characterised by their formulaic motifs, predictable plots, and "stock" figures and character types. This book offers a fresh perspective on these conventions, arguing that authors used them, and the expectations they generate, as a form of shorthand to interiority. Understanding romance conventions in this way reveals that romance characters' complex and often contradictory inner lives are made available precisely through the genre's narrative structures, shapes, and norms. Drawing upon recent work in the History of Emotions and Affect Theory, the author explores character and subjectivity in a variety of English romance texts from 1100 to 1500 - such as Amis and Amiloun, Le Bone Florence of Rome, The Squire of Low Degree, Sir Orfeo, Sir Gawain and the Green Knight and Malory's Le Morte Darthur. Through new readings of these texts, the book demonstrates the contribution made by romance to the growing significance of the individual in fiction after the twelfth century by paying particular attention to the ways in which convention, expectation, and genre intersect with character-formation and the representation of identity.

Retrospective Prophecy and Medieval English Authorship【電子書籍】[ Kimberly Fonzo ]

|

The prescience of medieval English authors has long been a source of fascination to readers. Retrospective Prophecy and Medieval English Authorship draws attention to the ways that misinterpreted, proleptically added, or dubiously attributed prognostications influenced the reputations of famed Middle English authors. It illuminates the creative ways in which William Langland, John Gower, and Geoffrey Chaucer engaged with prophecy to cultivate their own identities and to speak to the problems of their age.

Retrospective Prophecy and Medieval English Authorship examines the prophetic reputations of these well-known medieval authors whose fame made them especially subject to nationalist appropriation. Kimberly Fonzo explains that retrospectively co-opting the prophetic voices of canonical authors aids those looking to excuse or endorse key events of national history by implying that they were destined to happen. She challenges the reputations of Langland, Gower, and Chaucer as prophets of the Protestant Reformation, Richard II’s deposition, and secular Humanism, respectively.

This intellectual and critical assessment of medieval authors and their works successfully makes the case that prophecy emerged and recurred as an important theme in medieval authorial self-representations.

Feudal lords, evil enemies, and noble knights emerge and entwine into colorful strands, creating this carefully woven tale as a vibrant tapestry filled with hope and promise for an age consumed by darkness and despair. |

In this compelling new study, Whitney Cox presents a fundamental re-imagining of the politics of pre-modern India through the reinterpretation of the contested accession of Kulottunga I (r.1070?1120) as the ruler of the imperial Chola dynasty. By focusing on this complex event and its ramifications over time, Cox traces far-reaching transformations throughout the kingdom and beyond. Through a methodologically innovative combination of history, theory and the close reading of a rich series of Sanskrit and Tamil textual sources, Cox reconstructs the nature of political society in medieval India. A major intervention in the fields of South Asian social, political and cultural history, religion and comparative political thought, this book poses fresh comparative and conceptual questions about politics, history, agency and representation in the pre-modern world.

Hidden and Visible Realms Early Medieval Chinese Tales of the Supernatural and the Fantastic【
|

Chinese culture of the Six Dynasties period (220?589) saw a blossoming of stories of the fantastic. Zhiguai, “records of the strange” or “accounts of anomalies,” tell of encounters with otherness, in which inexplicable and uncanny phenomena interrupt mundane human affairs. They depict deities, ghosts, and monsters; heaven, the underworld, and the immortal lands; omens, metamorphoses, and trafficking between humans and supernatural beings; and legendary figures, strange creatures, and natural wonders in the human world.

Hidden and Visible Realms, traditionally attributed to Liu Yiqing, is one of the most significant zhiguai collections, distinguished by its varied contents, elegant writing style, and fascinating stories. It is also among the earliest collections heavily influenced by Buddhist beliefs, values, and concerns. Beyond the traditional zhiguai narratives, it includes tales of karmic retribution, reincarnation, and Buddhist ghosts, hell, and magic. In this annotated first complete English translation*,* Zhenjun Zhang gives English-speaking readers a sense of the wealth and wonder of the zhiguai canon. Hidden and Visible Realms opens a window into the lives, customs, and religious beliefs and practices of early medieval China and the cultural history of Chinese Buddhism. In the introduction, Zhang explains the key themes and textual history of the work.

The Meaning of Nouns Semantic Theory in Classical and Medieval India【電子書籍】[ M.M. Deshpande ]
|

Kaun&ddotu;abhatta's Vaiyakarana-bhusana is a massive work on semantic theory written in India in the 17th century. Kaun&ddotu;abhatta belonged to the tradition of Sanskrit grammar and in this work he consolidated the philosophy of language developed in the Paninian tradition of Sanskrit grammar. Kaun&ddotu;abhatta's work takes account of the philosophical debate which occurred in classical and medieval India among the philosophers and grammarians from about 500 B.C. to the 17th century A.D. Kaun&ddotu;abhatta's work primarily represents this debate between the traditions of Sanskrit grammar, Mi&mdotu;amsa, and Nyaya-Vaisesika. It discusses ontological, epistemological, and exegetical issues concerning the notion of meaning as it relates to the various components of language. The present book is a heavily annotated translation of the Namartha-nirnaya section of Kaun&ddotu;abhatta's Vaiyakarana-bhusana, with an extensive introduction. While there are several books that discuss Indian semantic theories in general terms, this book belongs to a small class of intensive, focused studies of densely written philosophical texts which examines each argument in its historical and philosophical context. It is of interest to all students of philosophy of language in general, and to students of Indian philosophy in particular.
