A Dictionary of Medieval Terms and Phrases【電子書籍】[ Christopher Cor?don ]

An interest in the middle ages often brings the non-specialist reader up short against a word or term which is not understood or only imperfectly understood. This dictionary is intended to put an end to all that - though such a claim is inevitably rash. However, it has been designed in the hope that it will be of real help to non-academic readers, and in some cases maybe even to specialists.
The dictionary contains some 3,400 terms as headwords, ranging from the legal and ecclesiastic to the more prosaic words of daily life. Latin was the language of the church, law and government, and many Latin terms illustrated here are frequently found in modern books of history of theperiod; similarly, the precise meaning of Old English and Middle English terms may elude today's reader: this dictionary endeavours to provide clarity. In addition to definition, etymologies of many words are given, in the beliefthat knowing the origin and evolution of a word gives a better understanding. There are also examples of medieval terms and phrases still in use today, a further aid to clarifying meaning.
CHRISTOPHER COREDON has also compiled the Dictionary of Cybernyms. Dr ANN WILLIAMS, historical consultant on the project, was until her retirement Senior Lecturer in medieval history at the Polytechnic of North London.

Perceptions of Medieval Manuscripts The Phenomenal Book【電子書籍】[ Elaine Treharne ]

Perceptions of Medieval Manuscripts takes as its starting point an understanding that a medieval book is a whole object at every point of its long history. As such, medieval books can be studied most profitably in a holistic manner as objects-in-the-world. This means readers might profitably account for all aspects of the manuscript in their observations, from the main texts that dominate the codex to the marginal notes, glosses, names, and interventions made through time. This holistic approach allows us to tell the story of the book's life from the moment of its production to its use, collection, breaking-up, and digitization--all aspects of what can be termed 'dynamic architextuality'. The ten chapters include detailed readings of texts that explain the processes of manuscript manufacture and writing, taking in invisible components of the book that show the joy and delight clearly felt by producers and consumers. Chapters investigate the filling of manuscripts' blank spaces, presenting some texts never examined before, and assessing how books were conceived and understood to function. Manuscripts' heft and solidness can be seen, too, in the depictions of miniature books in medieval illustrations. Early manuscripts thus become archives and witnesses to individual and collective memories, best read as 'relics of existence', as Maurice Merleau-Ponty describes things. As such, it is urgent that practices fragmenting the manuscript through book-breaking or digital display are understood in the context of the book's wholeness. Readers of this study will find chapters on multiple aspects of medieval bookness in the distant past, the present, and in the assurance of the future continuity of this most fascinating of cultural artefacts.

Lectures on the Rise and Development of Medieval Architecture (Complete)【電子書籍】[ Sir George Gilbert Scott ]

IT is with feelings somewhat closely bordering upon trepidation that, availing myself of the liberty given by the regulations recently passed by the Council of the Royal Academy, I venture to address you on a subject which has never, till now, been more than incidentally touched upon within these walls; a subject, indeed, dear to my heart, and entwined among my inmost thoughts and affections, but one which, perhaps for that very reason, I feel it the more difficult to bring before you through the medium of a lecture. It may be at first sight imagined that love, of all the human feelings, is that best calculated to aid in describing the beauties of its object, and in advocating its claims upon the admiration; but it is not so. We can hardly state the reasons why we love our parents or our brothers. We know that it is a feeling which has grown with our growth, and is a part of our very existence; yet it is probable that an acquaintance who has never shared in these warmer sentiments might describe their character and even their virtues more successfully than ourselves. If we seek to investigate them, we find the research all too cold and too methodical to accord with the tone of our feelings; and, like the poet who wished to sing of the Atrides and of Cadmus, the chords of our hearts respond only of love. So it is with those who have harboured an early affection for the architecture of their native land. Strongly as I appreciate the intrinsic beauty of the monuments of classic antiquity, and the merits of very many works of the Revival, I should doubt whether it were possible for any unsophisticated youth, before studying their architecture as a science, to entertain towards its productions in this country any feelings bordering upon real affection. He may see in them much to admireーmuch to lead him to study the art which has produced them; and this study will, no doubt, often kindle those warmer feelings which ripen into love. But this is a very different feeling from that deep and filial affection which many a youth, untaught in art, but gifted by nature with a perception of its beauties, has entertained from his tenderest years towards the old churches of his neighbourhood, and which has impelled him to walk from village to village, not only under the balmy influences of summer, but along muddy roads or snowy paths, and, with glowing heart but shivering hand, to sketch the humble porch, the unaspiring steeple, and the mutilated though venerable monument, with feelings of indescribable delight. It is this instinctive affection which it is so difficult to reason upon, and to which cold investigation seems so uncongenial; yet most pleasant it is, in after life, to find ever new proof that our early feelings have not been misplaced; that those once callous warm up when they are led to examine; that those who, strange to say, disliked the architecture of their forefathers, are now forced to admit some of its beauties; that the style, once despised, has become gradually appreciated, and its study become the favourite pursuit of thousandsーevery county having its society organised to promote it; that in every country in which it once flourished (Italy herself not excepted), the same revived feeling towards it has arisen; and, finally, that this distinguished Academy has stamped it as equally classic with the architecture of the ancient world, and admitted it to an equal place in the instructions offered to her students. Having found it impracticable, from previous engagements, to give, as had been kindly suggested to me, a short course of lectures during this season, I propose on the present occasion to limit myself to some introductory remarks on the study of Medi?val architecture, which I trust, with the kind permission of the Council, to follow up next year by one or two further lectures, both upon its original productions, and upon the bearing of the study of them upon our own practice and the architecture of the future.

She grew into womanhood in the days of Richard The Lion Heart, to become what the world had never seen.

When Miles Delong, Earl of Radstock and military adviser to King Richard first saw her, he was lost to her beauty and might. He taught her the art of war; Gwendolyn taught Sir Miles much more.

Together, Gwendolyn and Miles fought their enemies at home and in the Holy Land. But it was not until Miles was betrayed and given over to Saladin, the King of the Moors, that Gwendolyn left England's Druid Groves for the Holy Land. She went, not as Gwendolyn Delong, wife of the Earl of Radstock, but as Sir Eldwin of Radstock, where she led the fight through the bloody Crusades and into to the very Court of Saladin, and there is where the Queen of Knights became a legend.

ー"A post-Arthurian tale with a bit of a twist. Confessio Amantis; Or, Tales of the Seven Deadly Sins Exploring Redemption and Sin in Medieval Tales【電子書籍】[ John Gower ]

In 'Confessio Amantis; Or, Tales of the Seven Deadly Sins,' John Gower presents a rich tapestry of morality tales framed within a confession narrative, reflecting the prevalent scholastic thought of the late 14th century. Written in Middle English, the text employs a blend of allegory and personal reflection, inviting readers into a dialogue between the poet and a personified figure of repentance. The work is structured around the confessions of Amans, a lover seeking absolution for his sins, while weaving through the deadly sins'??pride, envy, wrath, sloth, avarice, gluttony, and lust'??each tale elucidating moral lessons rooted in Christian doctrine and courtly tradition. Gower's vivid imagery and lyrical style enrich the text, making it a significant milestone in English literature and an important commentary on the moral landscape of his time. John Gower, a contemporary of Geoffrey Chaucer, was a poet with profound connections to the societal and theological currents of medieval England. His works often reflect his own perspectives as a public figure and moral philosopher, grappling with the ethical and spiritual dilemmas of human existence. Gower's extensive travels and engagement with various literary traditions, including French and Latin influences, informed his unique voice and commitment to addressing moral concerns, rendering 'Confessio Amantis' not only a literary achievement but also a poignant reflection of the human condition. This seminal work is highly recommended for scholars and enthusiasts of medieval literature alike. Its intricate narratives not only captivate the imagination but also serve as a mirror through which readers can explore the complexities of human behavior and moral choice. Rhetorics of Bodily Disease and Health in Medieval and Early Modern England【電子書籍】

Susan Sontag in Illness as Metaphor and AIDS and Its Metaphors points to the vital connection between metaphors and bodily illnesses, though her analyses deal mainly with modern literary works. This collection of essays examines the vast extent to which rhetorical figures related to sickness and health-metaphor, simile, pun, analogy, symbol, personification, allegory, oxymoron, and metonymy-inform medieval and early modern literature, religion, science, and medicine in England and its surrounding European context. In keeping with the critical trend over the past decade to foreground the matter of the body and the emotions, these essays track the development of sustained, nuanced rhetorics of bodily disease and health ” physical, emotional, and spiritual. The contributors to this collection approach their intriguing subjects from a wide range of timely, theoretical, and interdisciplinary perspectives, including the philosophy of language, semiotics, and linguistics; ecology; women's and gender studies; religion; and the history of medicine. The essays focus on works by Dante, Chaucer, Spenser, Shakespeare, Donne, and Milton among others; the genres of epic, lyric, satire, drama, and the sermon; and cultural history artifacts such as medieval anatomies, the arithmetic of plague bills of mortality, meteorology, and medical guides for healthy regimens.

And yet ? in sixth-century Merovingian France, where women were excluded from noble succession and royal politics was a blood sport ? these two iron-willed strategists reigned over vast realms for decades, changing the face of Europe. After Brunhild's and Fredegund's deaths, however, their stories were rewritten, their names consigned to slander and legend.

From the tangled primary evidence of Merovingian sources, award-winning writer Shelley Puhak weaves a gripping and intricate tale, its characters driven by ambition, lust and jealousy to acts of treachery and murderous violence. The Emergence of Subjectivity in the Ancient and Medieval World An Interpretation of Western Civilization【電子書籍】[ Jon Stewart ]

The Emergence of Subjectivity in the Ancient and Medieval World: An Interpretation of Western Civilization represents a combination of different genres: cultural history, philosophical anthropology, and textbook. It follows a handful of different but interrelated themes through more than a dozen texts that were written over a period of several millennia and, by means of an analysis of these texts, presents a theory of the development of Western civilization from antiquity to the Middle Ages. The main line of argument traces the various self-conceptions of different cultures as they developed historically, reflecting different views of what it is to be human. The thesis of the volume is that through examination of these changes we can discern the gradual emergence of what we today call inwardness, subjectivity, and individual freedom. As human civilization took its first tenuous steps, it had a very limited conception of the individual. Instead, the dominant principle was that of the wider group: the family, clan, or people. Only in the course of history did the idea of what we now know as individuality begin to emerge, and it took millennia for this idea to be fully recognized and developed. The conception of human beings as having a sphere of inwardness and subjectivity subsequently had a sweeping impact on all aspects of culture, including philosophy, religion, law, and art: indeed, this notion largely constitutes what is today referred to as modernity. It is easy to lose sight of the fact that this modern conception of human subjectivity was not simply something given, but rather the result of a long process of historical and cultural development.

The Destruction of Medieval Manuscripts in England Institutional Collections【電子書籍】[ Krista A. Milne ]

The Dissolution of the Monasteries (1536-40) is widely held as the single most significant event in England's history of the destruction and loss of medieval manuscripts. Despite this consensus, the ultimate impact of the Dissolution - and of medieval manuscript destruction during the centuries that followed - remains unclear. How did Reformation-era losses compare to those which preceded the Reformation, and to those that followed it? How did the losses caused by sectarian conflicts compare to more quotidian kinds of loss, such as improper storage or deliberate de-acquisition? Which manuscripts were targeted, when were they targeted, and how should one account for the inevitably skewed record? In The Destruction of Medieval Manuscripts in England, Krista A. Milne asks these questions to better understand literary taste, behavioural patterns, and the circulation of knowledge throughout the medieval period. Milne explores methods drawn from quantitative codicology to explore the most significant moments of manuscript loss in the history of England. The evidence suggests that this destruction was much more limited in its targets, but far more extensive in scope, than is usually acknowledged. Overwhelmingly, throughout the investigation, the manuscripts most at risk were those considered too new to qualify as antique but too old to be au courant. This pattern of destruction, which Milne describes as the principle of 'age without vintage,' remains apparent in many different domains today.
