Neomedievalism, Popular Culture, and the Academy From Tolkien to Game of Thrones【電子書籍】[ Kelly Ann Fitzpatrick ]

|

The medieval in the modern world is here explored in a variety of media, from film and book to gaming.

Medievalism - the ways in which post-medieval societies perceive, interpret, reimagine, or appropriate the Middle Ages - permeates popular culture. From Disney princesses to Game of Thrones, medieval fairs to World of Warcraft, contemporary culture keeps finding new ways to reinvent and repackage the period. Medievalism itself, then, continues to evolve while it is also subject to technological advances, prominent invocations in political discourse, and the changing priorities of the academy. This has led some scholars to adopt the term "neomedievalism", a concept originating in part from the work of the late Umberto Eco, which calls for new avenues of inquiry into the wayswe think about the medieval.
This book examines recent evolutions of (neo)medievalism across multiple media, from Tolkien's Lord of the Rings to the film Beowulf and medieval gaming. These evolutions can take the form of what one might consider to be pop culture objects of critique (art, commodity, amusement park, video game) or academic tools of critique (monographs, articles, lectures, university seminars). It is by reconciling theseseemingly disparate forms that we can better understand the continual, interconnected, and often politicized reinvention of the Middle Ages in both popular and academic culture.

KELLYANN FITZPATRICK is an affiliated researcher at the Georgia Institute of Technology.

Literatures of Alchemy in Medieval and Early Modern England【電子書籍】[ Dr Eoin Bentick ]

|

Explores the myriad ways in which alchemy was conceptualised by adepts and sceptics alike, from those with recourse to a fully functioning laboratory to those who did not know their pelican from their athanor!

The language of alchemy (the art of transmuting metals and manufacturing pharmaceutical medicine) is defined by obscure imagery, authorial play and dense knottiness, tempting curious readers to unpick its impenetrable promises. From the fourteenth to the seventeenth century, alchemical literature was read, interpreted and reimagined both by those with recourse to a fully functioning laboratory and those who did not know their pelican from their athanor.
Recent studies by historians of science have succeeded in decoding the difficult language of these texts, revealing the replicable chemical procedures behind their metaphors. However, as a literary investigation of alchemy, this book explores more fluid understandings of the art in the period. Through an analysis of medieval and early modern texts and manuscript cultures, the volume explores the myriad ways in which alchemy was conceptualised in this period, by adept and sceptic alike. From Geoffrey Chaucer's mockery of the impotence of alchemical 'pryvetee' in The Canterbury Tales, and John Gower's macrocosmic hope for societal amelioration in the Confessio Amantis, to Elias Ashmole's angelic alchemy in the Theatrum chemicum britannicum, it explores the natural philosophy that underpinned such diverse representations of this 'slidynge science', proffering a theory of 'alchemical hermeneutics' as a conspiratorial way of reading that sees alchemy in all.

Jeanne D'Arc: her life and death A Compelling Portrait of a Medieval Martyr: Joan of Arc Explored【電子書籍】[ Margaret Oliphant ]

|

In "Jeanne D'Arc: her life and death," Margaret Oliphant provides a richly woven narrative that captures the essence of Joan of Arc's extraordinary life and the complex socio-political landscape of 15th-century France. Oliphant employs a blend of biographical detail and historical analysis, utilizing a lyrical style that elevates Joan's story beyond mere chronicling to a profound exploration of heroism, faith, and martyrdom. The book is set against the backdrop of the Hundred Years' War, where Oliphant seeks to illuminate the interplay between Joan's divine visions and her role as a national figure, ultimately portraying her as a symbol of resistance and resilience amidst turmoil. Margaret Oliphant (1828-1897) was a prolific Scottish author and a keen observer of her era. Her deep engagement with historical themes, often inspired by her own life experiences of loss and struggle, shaped her depiction of iconic figures like Joan of Arc. Oliphant'??s own exploration of women's roles in literature and society informs her empathetic portrayal of Joan, delineating the complexities of her character in contrast to the rigid gender norms of their respective times. For readers interested in historical biographies that delve into the lives of remarkable women, "Jeanne D'Arc: her life and death" is an indispensable work that combines scholarly rigor with evocative storytelling. Oliphant's nuanced exploration invites readers to reconsider the legacy of Joan of Arc, not merely as a historical figure but as an enduring symbol of courage and faith.

Tapestry: A Medieval Tale of Curses, Crowns, and Courage introduces a
wonderful world of dragons, knights, and powerful wizards. As imagined
by author Jerry Smith, this world comes alive through a poetic narrative that
follows the story of a gentle princess and her reluctant hero. They wind their way through a maze of lies, jealousy, and madness in search of truth, justice, and honor. Fortified with courage and stealth, they find the strength and perseverance to overcome the death, darkness, and destruction unleashed upon their land by an evil, power-hungry mage, and a scheming sorceress. Written in the style of the great Greek and Roman poets, Tapestry presents rich imagery and eloquent rhyming couplets portraying the adversity encountered by its characters. It follows them as they struggle ? evil against good, death against life, and destruction against rebirth. Feudal lords, evil enemies, and noble knights emerge and entwine into colorful strands, creating this carefully woven tale as a vibrant tapestry filled with hope and promise for an age consumed by darkness and despair. Grammar and Poetry in Late Medieval and Early Modern Wales The Transmission and Reception of the Welsh Bardic Grammars【電子書籍】[ Michaela Jacques ]
|

The medieval Welsh bardic grammars were composed and transmitted during a period of intense social and political change in Wales. These documents, which contain both a highly Latinate description of the Welsh language and a treatment of the strict poetic metres, began their life as essentially vernacular artes poetriae. However, from the early fourteenth century to the end of the sixteenth, they were recopied and revised over and over by bards, bureaucrats, antiquarians, humanists, and the readers and reciters of poetry. At different times they served as practical handbooks, official regulatory documents and attempts to realign the Welsh texts with contemporary Latin and English scholarship. This book weaves a close textual analysis of the revisions made to the text into a broader consideration of the historical contexts that gave rise to each subsequent version. The resulting narrative offers insight into the development of Welsh bardic and scholarly practices over the course of two centuries.

Chinese culture of the Six Dynasties period (220?589) saw a blossoming of stories of the fantastic. Zhiguai, “records of the strange” or “accounts of anomalies,” tell of encounters with otherness, in which inexplicable and uncanny phenomena interrupt mundane human affairs. They depict deities, ghosts, and monsters; heaven, the underworld, and the immortal lands; omens, metamorphoses, and trafficking between humans and supernatural beings; and legendary figures, strange creatures, and natural wonders in the human world.

Hidden and Visible Realms, traditionally attributed to Liu Yiqing, is one of the most significant zhiguai collections, distinguished by its varied contents, elegant writing style, and fascinating stories. It is also among the earliest collections heavily influenced by Buddhist beliefs, values, and concerns. Beyond the traditional zhiguai narratives, it includes tales of karmic retribution, reincarnation, and Buddhist ghosts, hell, and magic. In this annotated first complete English translation*,* Zhenjun Zhang gives English-speaking readers a sense of the wealth and wonder of the zhiguai canon. Hidden and Visible Realms opens a window into the lives, customs, and religious beliefs and practices of early medieval China and the cultural history of Chinese Buddhism. The Meaning of Nouns Semantic Theory in Classical and Medieval India【電子書籍】[ M.M. Deshpande ]
|

Kaun&ddotu;abhatta's Vaiyakarana-bhusana is a massive work on semantic theory written in India in the 17th century. Kaun&ddotu;abhatta belonged to the tradition of Sanskrit grammar and in this work he consolidated the philosophy of language developed in the Paninian tradition of Sanskrit grammar. Kaun&ddotu;abhatta's work takes account of the philosophical debate which occurred in classical and medieval India among the philosophers and grammarians from about 500 B.C. to the 17th century A.D. Kaun&ddotu;abhatta's work primarily represents this debate between the traditions of Sanskrit grammar, Mi&mdotu;amsa, and Nyaya-Vaisesika. It discusses ontological, epistemological, and exegetical issues concerning the notion of meaning as it relates to the various components of language. The present book is a heavily annotated translation of the Namartha-nirnaya section of Kaun&ddotu;abhatta's Vaiyakarana-bhusana, with an extensive introduction. While there are several books that discuss Indian semantic theories in general terms, this book belongs to a small class of intensive, focused studies of densely written philosophical texts which examines each argument in its historical and philosophical context. It is of interest to all students of philosophy of language in general, and to students of Indian philosophy in particular.

The Medieval Postcolonial Jew, In and Out of Time【電子書籍】[ Miriamne Ara Krummel ]
|

The Medieval Postcolonial Jew, In and Out of Time studies violent temporal clashes that are written into the medieval vision of annus domini [the year of our Lord]. Christian temporality represents Jewish time as queerly oddly outmoded and advocating uncivil and socially disruptive behavior. Jewish temporality, in turn, records a marginalized people who work to rescue their embattled temporality from becoming a time forgotten and colonized. Through a select group of literature in Middle English, Latin, and Hebrew, as well as sixteen manuscript pictorials, author Miriamne Ara Krummel confronts the notion that annus domini time (whether disguised as CE or AD) figures as the universal standard. Krummel’s argument details how Other temporalitiesーones outside and not like annus domini timeーare cast as nonstandard and imagined as wholly devised out of stories that promote fear and terror, and are positioned as putative threats to the fabric of the temporal empire of Latin Christendom. Ultimately, the book reflects on the ways in which “common” time both marks and silences marginal identities and cultures and shows to what extent the dynamics of the medieval environment materialize in our modern world.

Islam and Papal Power in Late Medieval and Early Modern Europe The Afterlives of a Popular Polemic【電子書籍】[ Kate Waggoner Karchner ]
|

Islam and Papal Power in Late Medieval and Early Modern Europe traces the influential history of another book: Riccoldo da Montecroce’s Contra legem Sarracenorum. Around 1301, a Dominican missionary named Riccoldo da Montecroce wrote a treatise on the Qur’an, arguing against the validity of the Muslim faith. Over the next two hundred years, Europeans read, copied, translated, and circulated Riccoldo’s work more than any other text on Islam. This study overviews and contextualizes that popularity in order to analyze Christian understandings of Islam in early modern Europe.

Analysing the thirty-four surviving manuscript copies, this book studies the way the text was transcribed, the notes that readers made in the margins, and the contexts in which it was copied. Critically, this book also puts the transmission analysis into the broader context of major European historical developments. This context reveals that Contra legem became a tool for Europeans who linked fear of the Ottoman Empire to instability within the Church. Specifically, readers used Riccoldo’s descriptions ofthe dangers of the Qur’an to conflate the Ottoman Empire with a broader Islamic threat to Christian society. Such positioning helped readers to substantiate the divine authority of the western Church ? and especially the papacy ? as a bulwark against this threat.

This book will be of interest to scholars working on interreligious dialogue and Christian-Muslim relations in medieval and early modern Europe and the Mediterranean. It will appeal to historians of religion, scholars of late medieval and early modern thought, and students of pre- and early modern history at the upper undergraduate and graduate levels.

The Friar and the Philosopher William of Moerbeke and the Rise of Aristotle’s Science in Medieval Europe【電子書籍】[ Pieter Beullens ]
|

William of Moerbeke was a prolific medieval translator of Aristotle and other ancient philosophical and scientific authors from Greek into Latin, and he played a decisive role in the acceptance of Aristotelian philosophy in the Latin world. He is often criticized for an allegedly deficient translation method.

However, this book argues that his approach was a deliberate attempt to allow readers to reach the correct understanding of the source texts in accordance with the medieval view of the role of the translator. William’s project to make all genuine works of Aristotle ? and also of other important authors from Antiquity ? available in Latin is framed against the background of intellectual life in the 13th century, the deliberate policy of his Dominican order to reconcile Christian doctrine with worldly knowledge, and new trends in book production that influenced the spread of the new translations. William of Moerbeke’s seemingly modest acts of translation started an intellectual revolution, the impact of which extended from the Middle Ages into the early modern era.

The Friar and the Philosopher will appeal to researchers and students alike interested in Medieval perceptions of Aristotle, as well as other works from Antiquity.

Aucassin and Nicolette A captivating medieval romance of love, social class, and religious differences【電子書籍】[ Anonymous ]
|

"Aucassin and Nicolette" is a remarkable medieval story that deftly intertwines romance, adventure, and lyrical poetry in a unique narrative form. This twelfth-century work masterfully blends prose and verse to tell the tale of Aucassin, the son of a nobleman, and Nicolette, his beloved who hails from a lower social class. Their relationship faces myriad trials, including societal norms and familial pressures, set against the backdrop of a feudal society. The text exemplifies the early roots of courtly love literature while juxtaposing themes of social hierarchy and personal desire, showcasing an innovative narrative style that captivates with its musicality and emotional depth. Though the author remains anonymous, it is suggested that they may have been influenced by the cultural movements of the time, including the rise of the troubadour tradition and the early Renaissance's embrace of individual expression. The narrative's playful yet profound exploration of love, accompanied by humor and whimsy, offers insight into the author's motivations, likely rooted in a desire to interrogate the constructs of love and social structure prevalent in medieval life. This enchanting tale is a must-read for anyone interested in medieval literature, romance narratives, or the evolution of storytelling. Its lyrical quality and engaging plot make it an enduring example of the complexities of love and society, inviting readers to reflect on their own understanding of desire, class, and personal fulfillment.

Teika The Life and Works of a Medieval Japanese Poet【電子書籍】[ Paul S. Atkins ]
|

Fujiwara no Teika (1162?1241) was born into an illustrious lineage of poets just as Japan’s ancien r?gime was ceding authority to a new political order dominated by military power. Overcoming personal and political setbacks, Teika and his allies championed a new style of poetry that managed to innovate conceptually and linguistically within the narrow confines of the waka tradition and the limits of its thirty-one syllable form. Backed by powerful patrons, Teika emerged finally as the supreme arbiter of poetry in his time, serving as co-compiler of the eighth imperial anthology of waka, Shin Kokinsh? (ca. 1210) and as solo compiler of the ninth.

This first book-length study of Teika in English covers the most important and intriguing aspects of Teika’s achievements and career, seeking the reasons behind Teika’s fame and offering distinctive arguments about his oeuvre. A documentary biography sets the stage with valuable context about his fascinating life and times, followed by an exploration of his “Bodhidharma style,” as Teika’s critics pejoratively termed the new style of poetry. His beliefs about poetry are systematically elaborated through a thorough overview of his writing about waka. Teika’s understanding of classical Chinese history, literature, and language is the focus of a separate chapter that examines the selective use of kana, the Japanese phonetic syllabary, in Teika’s diary, which was written mainly in kanbun, a Japanese version of classical Chinese. The final chapter surveys the reception history of Teika’s biography and literary works, from his own time into the modern period. Sometimes venerated as demigod of poetry, other times denigrated as an arrogant, inscrutable poet, Teika seldom inspired lukewarm reactions in his readers.

Courtier, waka poet, compiler, copyist, editor, diarist, and critic, Teika is recognized today as one of the most influential poets in the history of Japanese literature. His oeuvre includes over four thousand waka poems, his diary, Meigetsuki, which he kept for over fifty years, and a fictional tale set in Tang-dynasty China. Over fifteen years in the making, Teika is essential reading for anyone interested in Japanese poetry, the history of Japan, and traditional Japanese culture.

"The Farce of the Fart" and Other Ribaldries Twelve Medieval French Plays in Modern English【
|

Was there more to medieval and Renaissance comedy than Chaucer and Shakespeare? Bien s?r. For a real taste of saucy early European humor, one must cross the Channel to France. There, in the fifteenth and early sixteenth centuries, the sophisticated met the scatological in popular performances presented by roving troupes in public squares that skewered sex, politics, and religion. For centuries, the scripts for these outrageous, anonymously written shows were available only in French editions gathered from scattered print and manuscript sources. Now prize-winning theater historian Jody Enders brings twelve of the funniest of these farces to contemporary English-speaking audiences in "The Farce of the Fart" and Other Ribaldries. Enders's translation captures the full richness of the colorful characters, irreverent humor, and over-the-top plotlines, all in a refreshingly uncensored American vernacular.

Those who have never heard the one about the Cobbler, the Monk, the Wife, and the Gatekeeper should prepare to be shocked and entertained. "The Farce of the Fart" and Other Ribaldries is populated by hilarious characters high and low. The Observations of Gilles le Bouvier A Medieval Herald’s View of Europe and its Neighbouring Lands【電子書籍】

Translated from the medieval French, this book is a landmark English-language version of the work of Gilles le Bouvier. As the senior herald to King Charles VII, the monarch on the French throne as they advanced to victory in the Hundred Years' War between England, France and their allies, Gilles le Bouvier was close to the king during a decisive, formative period in France's history, as well as being a well-known figure from the period. The Observations of Gilles le Bouvier thus delivers a rare glimpse of a singular medieval worldview, offered through the constrained voice of a skilled diplomat carefully and occasionally sharing his opinions to audiences composed of his social superiors.

During his lifelong career as a messenger and a diplomat in Charles's service, Gilles le Bouvier, known as The Berry Herald, travelled far and wide on his master's behalf. This translated work is a compilation of his observations as he moved around Western Europe, the Mediterranean states and the Black Sea region. Throughout the text, Gilles le Bouvier:

* assessed or commented on the lands encompassed by his extensive travels
* discussed the peoples he claimed to have encountered, from the honourable Turks to the 'bad Catholics' of southern Italy
* surveyed the military capabilities of France's neighbours, allies, enemies and neutral states

Expertly introduced and contextualised by Gideon Brough and Sophie Patrick, this book provides a compelling and unique historical source for understanding life in late-medieval Europe through the eyes of someone who lived it.

Francis of Assisi The Life and Afterlife of a Medieval Saint【電子書籍】[ Andre Vauchez ]

|

A biography of the saint as both mystic and man: “The single best book about Francis now available in English” (Commonweal).

In this towering work, Andre Vauchez draws on the vast body of scholarship on Francis of Assisi, particularly the important research of recent decades, to create a complete and engaging portrait of the saint. He also explores how the memory of Francis was shaped by contemporaries who recollected him in their writings, and completes the book by setting “il Poverello” in the context of his time, bringing to light what was new, surprising, and even astonishing in the life and vision of this man.

The first part of the book is a fascinating reconstruction of Francis’s life and work. The second and third parts deal with the textsーhagiographies, chronicles, sermons, personal testimonies, etc.ーof writers who recorded aspects of Francis’s life and movement as they remembered them, and used those remembrances to construct a portrait of Francis relevant to their concerns. Finally, Vauchez explores those aspects of Francis’s life, personality, and spiritual vision that were unique to him, including his experience of God, his approach to nature, his understanding and use of Scripture, and his impact on culture as well as culture’s impact on him.

“Considered one of the great spiritual leaders of humankind, Francis of Assisi was also a man of many faces and personas: ascetic, the founder of a religious order, a romantic hero, a mystic, a defender of the poor, a promoter of peace. But as Vauchez emphasizesーand this biography constantly reminds usーFrancis was also a flesh-and-blood human being . . . A bracing, erudite account of a mystic’s life.”

Traces of a Hidden Tradition in Masonry and Medieval Mysticism【電子書籍】[ Isabel Cooper-Oakley ]
|

THE series of sketches which are now brought together appeared originally as detached articles in the pages of the Theosophical Review, written, however, with the object of demonstrating to students of Theosophy that a definite design could be traced beneath the apparently disconnected mystic doctrines held by the many occult brotherhoods, heretic sects and mystic associations which cluster so thickly together as we glance along the historical by-ways of religious thought during the Middle Ages. That object becomes clearer when they appear as they do now in closer juxtaposition. To those who wish to understand the reason of this steady recurrence of mystic tradition in every century, these studies may be of some use. They will serve as literary landmarks to guide the seeker to those distant sources whence flow faint echoes of divine truthsーthe heritage of the divine human race; truths that bring dim memories to the soul which are its highest impulse, and give the clue that guides it to the inner "science of the soul"ーthe mystic quest of all the saints, and the hidden truth that all religions have tried to teach, and which only a few in each religion have ever realized. Mystics, visionaries, dreamers of vain dreams have been the names which the scoffers have always thrown at those who counted the world as nought compared with the treasure of the unseen life, and who devoted their lives to this divine science, and tried to reach an understanding of its laws. And as we trace out the records of the past it will be clearly seen that the Theosophical development is but another link in a wondrous chain of mystic teaching which stretches far back into the night of time. Such a claim must be proved and its pretensions shown to be accurate, but it is only by careful researches in the historical dust-bins of the middle-ages that these data can be disinterred, and the chain of evidence rendered complete. Then it becomes evident that Theosophy is that glorious wisdom-religion which includes in its scope all religions and all philosophies

|

St. Bernard of Clairvaux's "Life of St. Malachy of Armagh" is a hagiographical masterpiece that delves into the life and virtues of Saint Malachy, a pivotal figure in the Irish Church during the 12th century. Written in a style that melds vivid narrative with spiritual exaltation, St. Bernard crafts a compelling portrait of Malachy's dedication to reforming the Church and his profound mystical experiences. The text also reflects the socio-religious context of the time, displaying the tensions between the burgeoning monastic movement and ecclesiastical authority, thus illuminating the wider landscape of medieval Christendom. Saint Bernard, a prominent Cistercian monk and theologian, was deeply invested in the revival of spiritual life across Europe during a time of considerable upheaval. His role as a reformer and mystic influenced his desire to document the life of Malachy, an archetypal saint whose pursuits mirrored the spiritual aspirations of Bernard'??s own community. This connection between their lives highlights the enduring legacy of holiness that transcends geographic and temporal boundaries. This book is highly recommended for scholars and lay readers alike who seek to understand the interplay between sanctity and ecclesiastical reform in the medieval period. Bernard's work not only serves as a tribute to Malachy but also encourages reflection on the ideals of faith, leadership, and the transformative power of holiness.

A phantom horseman. A murdered abbot. Well written... A thumping good read' - South Wales Argus

The Brothers of the abbey of St Martin's-in-the-Marsh usually pay little heed to the tales of robber baron Sir Geoffrey Mandeville's ghost galloping through the Lincolnshire fens with a retinue of ghastly horsemen. They may hear the shrill blast of a phantom hunting horn, or see the corpse candles glowing in the dark, but none really accepts the peasants' belief that these flickering lights can forewarn men of their own deaths. The monks are protected by the monastery's high wall and their powerful abbot - a friend of King Edward I - and, although their leaders sometimes argue over the abbey's future, their lives are peaceful and comfortable. But then Abbot Stephen is found murdered in his chamber, with the door and windows locked from the inside, and Sir Hugh Corbett, Keeper of the King's Seal, arrives to investigate.

What readers are saying about Corpse Candle:
'This book [has] elegance, history and mystery that will make you scared but wanting to turn the page'
'Intrigue is maintained throughout with interesting twists'
'Another excellent book that just could not be put down!'
