Not Out of Hate A Novel of Burma【電子書籍】[ Ma Ma Lay ]
|

Not Out of Hateーpublished in Burmese in 1955 and set in 1939?42ーwas Ma Ma Lay’s fifth novel and one that further cemented her status as one of twentieth-century Burma’s foremost writers and voices for change. A journalist by trade, Lay applied her straightforward observational style with compassion and purpose to the story of Way Way, a teenage village girl whose quiet life assisting her father in his rice-brokerage business is disrupted by the arrival of U Saw Han, the cosmopolitan Burmese rice trader twenty years her senior. When she first encounters him, Way Way is entranced by his Western furnishings, servants, and mannerisms. The two marry, but before long, it becomes clear that U Saw Han’s love is a stifling one that seeks to obliterate her traditional ways.

Not Out of Hate was enormously popular in Burma and went through several editions in the 1950s and 1960s. When Ohio University Press published its English translation, in 1991, it became the first significant fictional account of prewar Burma available in English since George Orwell’s Burmese Days, and provided a Burmese counterpoint to Orwell’s novel. Translated into English here for the first time, the novel is an engaging drama, finely observed work of social realism, and stirring rejection of Western cultural dominance.

The Gift of Anger Use Passion to Build Not Destroy【電子書籍】[ Joe Solmonese ]
|

Under Joe Solmonese's leadership, the Human Rights Campaign became the model other organizations look toward to create effective social and political change. Against daunting odds, HRC was instrumental in passing landmark national legislation such as the Matthew Shepard and James Byrd, Jr., Hate Crimes Prevention Act; repealing '??Don't Ask, Don't Tell'??; and passing marriage equality acts in eight states. How did Solmonese and HRC do it?
What Solmonese reveals in this book is that for him, the key to success was learning to harness his anger. Essentially it's just a form of energy. Channeled, it can keep you moving forward on a long journey. But uncontrolled, it can blow everything up.
With this as his guiding principle, Solmonese uses stories from his work with HRC and his previous position as CEO of the powerful women's organization EMILY's List to share a series of often-surprising lessons. For example, empathize with your enemies instead of shaming them, find allies wherever you can, and ask for the doable, not the impossible (even when the '??impossible'?? is your ultimate goal). Most striking in this book are the stories of Solmonese's ability to draw some kind of win'??however small'??from seeming adversaries.
But at every step of the way he emphasizes the importance of managing the yin-yang tension of anger. Particularly when one is dealing with irrational and offensive attitudes, the temptation is ever present to give in to righteous indignation. While it's fine to feel it, Solmonese's advice is to always be strategic with your outrage.

Death Be Not Proud The Art of Holy Attention【電子書籍】[ David Marno ]
|

The seventeenth-century French philosopher Nicolas Malebranche thought that philosophy could learn a valuable lesson from prayer, which teaches us how to attend, wait, and be open for what might happen next. Death Be Not Proud explores the precedents of Malebranche's advice by reading John Donne's poetic prayers in the context of what David Marno calls the "art of holy attention."
If, in Malebranche's view, attention is a hidden bond between religion and philosophy, devotional poetry is the area where this bond becomes visible. Marno shows that in works like "Death be not proud," Donne's most triumphant poem about the resurrection, the goal is to allow the poem's speaker to experience a given doctrine as his own thought, as an idea occurring to him. But while the thought must feel like an unexpected event for the speaker, the poem itself is a careful preparation for it. And the key to this preparation is attention, the only state in which the speaker can perceive the doctrine as a cognitive gift. Along the way, Marno illuminates why attention is required in Christian devotion in the first place and uncovers a tradition of battling distraction that spans from ascetic thinkers and Church Fathers to Catholic spiritual exercises and Protestant prayer manuals.

One moment can change the course of a life forever. For Reg Willick, that moment came with a devastating phone callーan event that would alter his path, ignite a relentless drive, and lead him toward a mission bigger than himself.

In this raw and powerful memoir, Reg shares his journey through unimaginable loss, the surprising salvation he found in running, and the profound impact of paying it forward. From the heartbreak of a tragic accident that shook him to his core to the triumph of completing the Great World Raceーseven marathons on seven continents in seven daysーthis is a story of grit, determination, and unwavering resolve. But this book is more than just races run and finish lines crossed; it’s also about the people and places that shaped his life, the deep influence of his wife, Janice, and the comfort and joy found in the companionship of dogs. It’s about finding purpose after retirement, standing up to injustice, navigating the flaws of bureaucracy, life’s inequalities, and a global crisisーand discovering healing through action and compassion.

Told with honesty, vulnerability, and humour, Not a Runner is a testament to the power of determination, the importance of doing what’s rightーno matter the costーand how even the smallest acts of kindness can create ripples of change. Some wounds never heal. But through running, resilience, and reaching out to others, Reg Willick found a way to keep moving forward.

When I Am Playing with My Cat, How Do I Know That She Is Not Playing with Me? Montaigne and Being in Touch with Life【電子書籍】[ Saul Frampton ]

|

“When I dance, I dance; when I sleep, I sleep. And when I
am walking alone in a beautiful orchard, if my thoughts
are sometimes preoccupied elsewhere, the rest of the time I
bring them back to the walk, to the orchard, to the sweetness
of this solitude, and to me.”
ーMontaigne

In the year 1570,at the age of thirty-seven, Michel de Montaigne gave up his job as a magistrate and retired to his ch?teau to brood on his own private griefーthe deaths of his best friend, his father, his brother, and his firstborn child. On the ceiling of his library he inscribed a phrase from the Roman poet and philosopher Lucretius: “There is no new pleasure to be gained by living longer.”

But finding his mind agitated rather than settled by this idleness, Montaigne began to write, giving birth to the Essaysーshort prose explorations of an amazingly wide range of subjects. And gradually, over the course of his writing, Montaigne rejected his stoical pessimism and turned from a philosophy of death to a philosophy of life. He erased Lucretius’s melancholy fatalism and began to embrace the exuberant vitality of living, finding an antidote to death in the most unlikely placesーthe touch of a hand, the smell of his doublet, the playfulness of his cat, and the flavor of his wine.

Saul Frampton offers a celebration of perhaps the most enjoyable and yet profound of all Renaissance writers, whose essays went on to have a huge impact on figures as diverse as Shakespeare, Emerson, and Orson Welles, and whose thoughts, even today, offer a guide and unprecedented insight into the simple matter of being alive.

What is life like without arms?

Rod Haines was born in 1942, at a time when doctors freely gave advice on options of what to do with this armless baby, and whom they thought would also have limited brain function.

Rod was the middle child of five children and his childhood was full of love, support and encouragement from family and friends. He was mainstreamed at school and went on to university to become a lawyer, and later diverting into other academic areas, especially in the Health area. He has built several boats using his feet as his hands, and ventured into all sorts of crazy activities like skydiving, land yachting, gliding, water skiing …….

Rod met his sweetheart Leonie (Bunny) in his 20s and later they married. Their combined family of three children, Nicki, Steve and Sam shared in their early boating adventures around the Waimea Estuary in Nelson, until the time came when it was just the two of them left and they built their beloved boatahome Gentle, on which they now spend their summers cruising and exploring New Zealand inland waters.

This story touches on aspects of Rod’s life growing up without arms, how he has adapted to fit in with his environment and how he helps others adapt to his environment. I Promise Not To Suffer A Fool for Love Hikes the Pacific Crest Trail【電子書籍】[ Gail D. Storey ]

|

"Witty, wise, and full of heart, Gail Storey’s winning memoir of her hike on the Pacific Crest Trail at the age of fifty-six is a book for every one who ever dreamed of taking the road less traveled. I Promise Not to Suffer is as inspiring as it is hilarious, as poignant as it is smart. It’s one of those oh-please-don’t-let-it-end books. I’d carry it in my backpack anywhere.”ーCheryl Strayed, author of Wild

With comfortable urban lives in Houston, Texas, and career and life goals mostly accomplished, Gail D. Storey and her husband were in their fifties when they decided it was time to test themselves on a new pathーa 2,663-mile path known as the Pacific Crest Trail, which stretches from Mexico to Canada.

I Promise Not to Suffer is Gail's light-hearted yet heart-felt memoir about her and her husband's adventures and misadventures, deepening marriage, and reflections on being irrevocably changed by life on the trail. She was a novice hiker, while he was an experienced outdoorsman. Removed from their usual routines and living outside in the wilderness for months exposed hidden intricacies in their relationship. Hiking 20 miles a day over mountains, thirsting in the high desert of California, forcing frozen feet into icy socks and boots each morning in the High Sierra, stumbling through lava fields in OregonーGail was required to meet the elements on their own tough-love terms. From an encounter with a mountain lion to her mother's battle with cancer at home, she confronts each challenge with wit and brave style. While a dangerous loss of weight forces Gail to leave the PCT after 900 miles, she regains strength and later rejoins her husband on sections until he triumphantly reaches the northern terminus in Canada.

Humorous yet honest, this journey of harrowing hilarity and reluctant revelations will be loved by active hikers (appendices include details of their unique ultralight gear and other essential how-to information), fans of female adventure stories, and armchair travelers alike.

Praise for I Promise Not To Suffer:

“At times wrenching memoir, at times hilarious, I Promise Not to Suffer pulls no punches and has a wicked sense of fun. Storey reminds me again of what is possible with a big imagination, a dose of scrappy courage, and a lot of love.”
--Peter Heller, author of The Dog Stars and Kook

“Some have called Gail Storey the Nora Ephron of the wilderness. With her own unique wit, Storey shares Ephron’s commitment to creating and tending a long, nourishing marriage. I Promise Not to Suffer is a portrait of a union that does not fray or break under pressure but is forged, toughened, and tenderized.”
--Sara Davidson, author of Leap!, Loose Change, and The December Project

“Of the many books that I have read about hiking the Pacific Crest Trail, none have captured the trail experience from so many different perspectives.Single hikers, couples, and those who stay behind will all enjoy Gail Storey’s account of the challenges, the beauty, and the PCT community found along the way.”
--Liz Bergeron, Executive Director and CEO, Pacific Crest Trail Association

Black Does Not Equal Inferior【電子書籍】[ Tolu' A. Akinyemi ]
|

Black ≠ Inferior is a collection of poems divided into 2 parts. The first part is a collection of thematically linked poems exploring Blackness and the myriads of issues it attracts. The second part oscillates themes- talking about consent, a query of death, a celebration of love among others. In his usual stylistic, this collection deals with weighty matters like race and colourism with simple and clear language.

In Black ≠ Inferior, we see Tolu' Akinyemi reacting in response to the world, to issues that affect Black people. Here, we see a poet shedding off his burdens through his poems; hence, the beauty of this collection is in the issues it attempts to address. In this collection, Tolu' wears a coat of many colours - he is a preacher, a prophet, a doctor and a teacher.

We see Tolu' the preacher in these lines:

'I wish you can rise through the squalor of poverty

and voices that watercolour you as under-represented.

I wish you can emblaze your name in gold,

and swim against every wave of hate.'

This is a collection of poems fit for the present narrative as any (Black) person who reads this collection should beam with confidence at the end. This is what the poet sets out to achieve with his oeuvre.

And when you turn to God, what do you do when His very presence in your life disrupts everything you thought was true about yourself, your relationships, and your sexual identity?

That was the challenging, yet ultimately freeing place that music-lover Terrie Broom found herself facing. With the unexpected, untimely death of her brother due to complications from AIDS, Terrie began seeking answers to her grief...which miraculously led her to an encounter with God.

The only problem? Her long-term, same-sex partner didn't want to come along on that spiritual journey. Terrie's entire world suddenly turned upside-down as she lost her beloved home, her pets, many friends, and her income.

Facing grief, loss, a dramatic breakup, financial struggles, and loneliness, Terrie had no choice but to double down on her faith in God, no matter what. With each season, she gained valuable insights into God's love for her through devotional time, the help of godly people supporting her journey-and music that spoke to her struggles and provided powerful encouragement to continue to walk in faith.

Part memoir, part devotional, part homage to all kinds of music, Terrie's inspiring, open-hearted, authentic story of change and freedom is a powerful reminder of how God can truly transform anyone and everyone-no matter what you're going through. You'll be encouraged to open your life to God's transforming power, trusting as Terrie did, that all things work for our good-and all for His glory.

Are you tired of people knowing who you are but no one really knowing you?

As the star of the twentieth season of The Bachelor,Ben Higgins looked like he had it all together. Instead, Ben felt dissatisfied, fearful, and deeply alone. Like so many of us, he thought of himself as the kid who never got picked for the game, the person always on the outside of the joke, the friend who knew a lot of people but was never truly known. He wondered if he mattered at all.

In Alone in Plain Sight,Ben vulnerably shares how he found authentic connection with himself, with others, and with God. As Ben helps us name our own yearning for meaning, he explores

ways to understand ourselves more deeply so that we are free to connect with others;

how shared pain can bridge even the widest gaps between two very different people;

why we must deconstruct our culture’s fairy-tale view of love; and

how the God who longs for relationship with us is the answer to our need for connection.

As Ben discovered, in a disconnected world, it is still possible to have lasting purpose and peace. You are already known. You are already loved. You are already seen. Discover how to live out how much you matter as you embrace the true meaning of your one incredible life.

Comedian Iain Stirling is best known as the brilliantly funny voice of the BAFTA-award winning smash hit Love Island. Despite his many accolades, and his mum telling him he’s her ‘special little soldier’ every day, Iain still struggles with everyday adult life. What a textbook millennial.

From the brilliantly funny voice behind the BAFTA-winning smash hit Love Island comes a scrutinising dissection of millennial life, giving the finger to ‘adulthood’ (whatever that means) along the way.

Throughout life millennials have been taught that they are perfect and should live a perfect life. They’ve been told, whatever happens, don’t screw up. So is it any wonder they have acquired an image of being self-obsessed, work-shy, mollycoddled egomaniacs? Iain argues that beneath this facade is a misunderstood generation with a crippling fear of failure. And it’s time for this to change.

Provocative and full of his razor-sharp wit, Not F*cking Ready to Adult is Iain’s guide to what life is really like for millennials and how they can navigate it better.

Be Not Afraid: Stories From the New Testament【電子書籍】[ Catharine Shaw ]

By the Lake of Galilee there is rising ground, situated near several villages on the borders of the lake, where it is believed the Lord Jesus spoke those wonderful words which are called "The Sermon on the Mount." Travellers who have been to this spot tell us that the rising, rocky ground, which is called "The Horns of Hattin," would be a most convenient place for any one who was speaking to large numbers of people. And it is here, it is thought, our Lord, "seeing the multitudes" who had followed Him from the villages beneath the mountain, spoke to them of the blessings which they might possess if they kept His words; and explained to them the duties which were laid upon those who loved Him, and the blessings in store for them. In an earthly school, the children are told of the prizes which will be given for earnest endeavour; and each one on entering the school is able to read the list of these rewards, and the conditions which are attached to them. We all understand more or less of this earthly competitionーthis great endeavour to do our best, to see some result of our hard work, to have the joy of receiving a prize or of earning the approbation of the master who helps us to the attainment of our ideal. This is in an earthly schoolーnow we are going to turn to the heavenly side of life. So when our Lord Jesus Christ, from that rocky eminence raised above the multitude, spoke to them and saidー?"Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the Kingdom of Heavenー"? It seems to me that there is hidden in His words a Promise; and also a Way made plain, to obtain the Prize. ?So the first "Blessed" is:? "Blessed are the poor in spirit"; and the promise is: "For theirs is the Kingdom of Heaven."? "The poor in spirit" does not mean a weak man, but one who knows how likely he is to fail, and therefore does not trust in himself or his pride, but looks up into God's face, instead of into his own faulty doings. In a little country town in the West of England, about a hundred years ago, there lived a man who was spoken of as "half-witted." He was a general favourite; but if, at any time, he was twitted by the boys, or good-humouredly questioned by older people, his invariable answer wasー?"I'm a poor Sinner, and nothing at all;?But Jesus Christ is my All-in-All."? Whatever else he had missed, he had learned the blessedness of being "poor in spirit," and his reward has been, for many a long day, an entrance into "the Kingdom of Heaven." "Thus saith the high and lofty One that inhabiteth eternity, Whose name is Holy: I dwell in the high and holy place, with him also that is of a contrite and humble spirit, to revive the spirit of the humble, and to revive the heart of the contrite ones."
