Howard Who?

“If this is your first taste of Howard, I envy you.”ーFrom the Introduction by George R.R. Martin

Acclaimed cult author Waldrop's stories are sophisticated, magical recombinations of the stuff our pop-culture dreams are made of. Open this book and encounter jazz singers, robotic cartoon ducks, nosferatu, angry gorillas, and, of course, the dodo.

The first paperback (and twentieth anniversary) edition of a landmark debut collection. Waldrop’s capacious, encyclopedic knowledge of superheroes, baseball players, world wars, long-dead film stars, Mexican wrestlers, pulp serials, and fairy tales is put to good use in these sophisticated re-combinations of oddball television shows, radio plays, scientific expeditions, extinct species, knock-knock jokes, and questions like these:

* What if the dodo wasn't extinct after all?
* What if sumo wrestlers could defeat their opponents with the power of the mind?
* What if Izaak Walton and John Bunyan went fishing for Leviathan in the Slough of Despond?

Never published in paperback, long out of print, and extremely collectible, Howard Who? was Waldrop's seminal debut collection. If you haven't read Waldrop before, you're in for a treat.

"The best Waldrops tend to mix the humorous and wistful.... Italo Calvino once said that he was "known as an author who changes greatly from one book to the next. And in these very changes you recognize him as himself." Much the same could be said of Howard Waldrop. You never know what he'll come up with next, but somehow it's always a Waldrop story. Read the work of this wonderful writer, a man who has devoted his life to his art -- and to fishing."
ーMichael Dirda, Washington Post

"A charming collection."
ーLos Angeles Times

"Back in print after so many years, Howard Who? remains a terrific collection of short stories. There is nobody else alive writing stories as magnificently strange, deliriously inventive, and utterly wonderful as Howard Waldrop."
ーMetrobeat

Table of Contents

Introduction by George R. GAY LIFE (A Satire on the Lifestyle of the French Riviera) The C?te d'Azur Stories During Jazz Age【電子書籍】[ E. M. Delafield ]

E. M. Delafield's 'Gay Life' is a witty and incisive satire that takes a humorous look at the extravagant lifestyle of the French Riviera. Delafield's keen observations and sharp wit invite readers to reflect on the excesses and frivolities of the elite social circles featured in the novel. Set against the backdrop of the glamorous Riviera, the book offers a clever commentary on societal norms and values during the early 20th century. Delafield's writing style is characterized by a dry humor and clever wordplay, making 'Gay Life' an entertaining and thought-provoking read. The novel's exploration of themes such as wealth, privilege, and social status remains relevant even in today's society, making it a timeless piece of literature. E. M. Delafield's own experiences as a social commentator and novelist undoubtedly influenced the creation of this satirical masterpiece. Drawing from her own observations of the upper classes, Delafield infuses 'Gay Life' with authenticity and insight into the world she portrays. I recommend 'Gay Life' to readers who appreciate satirical works that offer a sharp critique of societal norms and behaviors, as well as those interested in the social dynamics of the early 20th century.

Trust Me Short Stories【電子書籍】[ John Updike ]

The theme of trust, betrayed or fulfilled, runs through this collection of short stories: Parents lead children into peril, husbands abandon wives, wives manipulate husbands, and time undermines all. Love pangs, a favorite subject of the author, take on a new urgency as earthquakes, illnesses, lost wallets, and deaths of distant friends besiege his aging heroes and heroines. One man loves his wife’s twin, and several men love the imagined bliss of their pasts; one woman takes an impotent lover, and another must administer her father’s death. Bourgeois comforts and youthful convictions are tenderly seen as certain to erode: “Man,” as one of these stories concludes, “was not meant to abide in paradise.”

F. Scott Fitzgerald: Novels and Stories 1920-1922 (LOA #117) This Side of Paradise / Flappers and Philosophers / The Beautiful and Damned / Tales of the Jazz Age【

At the outset of what he called "the greatest, the gaudiest spree in history," F. Scott Fitzgerald wrote the works that brought him instant fame, mastering the glittering aphoristic prose and keen social observation that would distinguish all his writing. This Library of America volume brings together four volumes that collectively offer the fullest literary expression of one of the most fascinating eras in American life.

This Side of Paradise (1920) gave Fitzgerald the early success that defined and haunted him for the rest of his career. Offering in its Princeton chapters the most enduring portrait of college life in American literature, this lyrical novel records the ardent and often confused longings of its hero's struggles to find love and to formulate a philosophy of life.

Flappers and Philosophers (1920), a collection of accomplished short stories, includes such classics as "Dalyrimple Goes Wrong," "Bernice Bobs Her Hair," and "The Ice Palace."

Fitzgerald continues his dissection of a self-destructive era in his second novel, The Beautiful and Damned (1922), as the self-styled aristocrat Anthony Patch and his beautiful wife, Gloria, are cut off from an inheritance and forced to endure the excruciating dwindling of their fortune. Here New York City, playground for the pleasure-loving Patches and brutal mirror of their dissipation, is portrayed more vividly than anywhere else in Fitzgerald's work.

Tales of the Jazz Age (1922), his second collection of stories, includes the novella "May Day," featuring interlocking tales of debutantes, soldiers, and socialists brought together in the uncertain aftermath of World War I, and "A Diamond as Big as the Ritz," a fable in which the excesses of the Jazz Age take the hallucinatory form of a palace of unfathomable opulence hidden deep in the Montana Rockies.

LIBRARY OF AMERICA is an independent nonprofit cultural organization founded in 1979 to preserve our nation’s literary heritage by publishing, and keeping permanently in print, America’s best and most significant writing. The Library of America series includes more than 300 volumes to date, authoritative editions that average 1,000 pages in length, feature cloth covers, sewn bindings, and ribbon markers, and are printed on premium acid-free paper that will last for centuries.

DRIFTWOOD SPARS The Stories of a Man, a Boy, a Woman, and Certain Other People Who Strangely Met Upon the Sea of Life【電子書籍】[ P. C. Wren ]

This carefully crafted ebook: "DRIFTWOOD SPARS - The Stories of a Man, a Boy, a Woman, and Certain Other People Who Strangely Met Upon the Sea of Life" is formatted for your eReader with a functional and detailed table of contents. Driftwood Spars is one of the early novels of P. C. Wren. First part of the novel is mainly concerning the early life of, John Robin Ross-Ellison, commander of Foreign Legion troops. Second part is covering the early life of Moussa Isa Somali, proud and brave young boy. Further on their paths are crossing along with many other characters in the deserts of North Africa. Percival Christopher Wren (1875 - 1941) was an English writer, mostly of adventure fiction. He is remembered best for Beau Geste, a much-filmed book of 1924, involving the French Foreign Legion in North Africa. This was one of 33 novels and short story collections that he wrote, mostly dealing with colonial soldiering in Africa. While his fictional accounts of life in the pre-1914 Foreign Legion are highly romanticized, his details of Legion uniforms, training, equipment and barrack room layout are generally accurate, which has led to unproven suggestions that Wren himself served with the legion. The descriptions of Legion garrison life given in his work The Wages of Virtue, written in 1914, closely match those contained in the autobiographical In the Foreign Legion by ex-legionnaire Edwin Rosen.

The Purple Swamp Hen and Other Stories【電子書籍】[ Penelope Lively ]

A glimmering collection of new short fiction from the Booker Prize winner.

“Lively writes with an astringent blend of sympathy and detachment, emotional wisdom and satiric wit.” ーMichiko Kakutani, The New York Times

In such acclaimed novels as The Photograph, Family Album, and How It All Began, Penelope Lively has captivated readers with her singular blend of wisdom, elegance, and humor. Now, in her first story collection in decades, Lively takes up themes of history, family, and relationships across varied and vividly rendered settings.

In the title story, a Mediterranean purple swamp hen chronicles the secrets and scandals of Quintus Pompeius’s villa, culminating with his narrow escape from the lava and ash of Vesuvius. “Abroad” captures the low point of an artist couple’s tumultuous European road trip, trapped in a remote Spanish farmhouse and forced to paint a family mural and pitch in with chores to pay for repairs to their broken-down car. Other stories reveal friends and lovers in fateful moments of indiscretion, discovery, and even retributionーas in “The Third Wife,” when a woman learns her husband is a serial con artist and turns a house-hunting trip into an elaborately staged revenge trap.

Each of these delightful stories is elevated by Lively’s signature graceful prose and eye for the subtle yet powerfully evocative detail. Wry, charming, and keenly insightful, The Purple Swamp Hen and Other Stories is a masterful achievement from one of our most beloved writers.

In "The Jews of Barnow: Stories," Karl Emil Franzos presents a poignant collection of vignettes that intricately explore the lives of the Jewish community in the fictional town of Barnow. Through vivid narratives that blend realism with rich character studies, Franzos captures the socio-economic struggles, cultural identities, and existential dilemmas faced by his characters. His prose is marked by a lyrical quality, infused with a deep sense of empathy that speaks to the broader Jewish experience in late 19th-century Eastern Europe, reflecting the tensions between tradition and modernity that defined the era. Karl Emil Franzos, a prominent German author of Jewish descent, draws upon his own background as a lens through which to depict the complexities of Jewish life. Born in what is now Ukraine, and later moving to Germany, Franzos became acutely aware of the cultural dislocation and societal challenges facing Jews during this transformative period. His personal experiences, coupled with a commitment to advocacy for Jewish rights, informed his literary voice, making his depictions both heartfelt and insightful. This collection is highly recommended for readers interested in Jewish literature, European history, or those seeking to understand the nuanced lives of marginalized communities.
