Galileo's Gout Science in an Age of Endarkenment【電子書籍】[ Gerald Weissmann ]

"America's most interesting and important essayist." ーEric Kandel, Nobel Prize?winning author of The Age of Insight

"[Gerald Weissmann] bridges the space between science and the humanities, and particularly between medicine and the muses, with wit, erudition, and, most important, wisdom." ーAdam Gopnik

Embryonic stem cell research. Evolution vs. intelligent design. The transformation of medicine into "health care." Climate change. Never before has science been so intertwined with politics, never have we been more dependent on scientific solutions for the preservation of the species.

Transporting us across more than four hundred years of pivotal moments in science and medicine, Gerald Weissmann distills history's lessons for today's new age of sect and violence: "The Endarkenment." Among others, he lingers with Galileo and his daughter in seventeenth-century Florence, Diderot and d'Alembert in Enlightenment Paris, William and Alice James in fin de si?cle Boston, James Watson as the John McEnroe of DNA, and Craig Venter decoding the genome at the dawn of the twenty-first century. Weissmann's message is clear: "Experimental science is our defenseーperhaps our best defenseーagainst humbug and the Endarkenment."

Gerald Weissmann (August 7, 1930 ? July 10, 2019) was a physician, scientist, editor, and essayist whose collections include The Fevers of Reason: New and Selected Essays; Epigenetics in the Age of Twitter: Pop Culture and Modern Science; Mortal and Immortal DNA: Science and the Lure of Myth; and Galileo’s Gout: Science in an Age of Endarkenment.

The Book of Boar: Bounty Hunter is a genre-bending, hard-boiled crime thriller with a wicked satirical edge. It tells the extraordinary tale of William ‘Boar’ Summers, a washed-up-police-detective-turned-fugitive-recovery-agent who sets off in search of a senator’s prodigal son and uncovers a sinister conspiracy which leads him on a breakneck ride across a Mytho-modern American landscape and brings him into conflict with a cast of memorable characters from all walks of life. Along the way, Boar struggles with his many demons including anger, alcoholism and hypocrisy, as he grapples to make headway with the toughest case of his career.

However, his greatest challenge comes in the form of Lily Jane, his eleven year old daughter, the issue of his failed marriage, who is foisted upon him when his ex-wife enters a rehabilitation programme. In spite of himself, Boar discovers that he needs his daughter’s approval, and this dynamic creates a hilarious tension which lends a darkly comic tone to the narrative. As they hurtle along together on this compelling, picaresque odyssey, Lily assumes the role of Boar’s conscience and it soon becomes clear that the true objective of their mission is to salvage a broken family and to help the protagonist to face his mounting personal problems and take control of his life.

In the words of the protagonist and narrator of this volume-
"I have titled this story 'The Book of Boar', and although it may shock and offend some folks, maybe even break the hearts of some others, it will NOT bore you."

Two years have passed since the unsavory events in Dust. Evan Reed is still cranky, but she’s also dealing with the nagging effects of a gunshot wound. Her teenage daughter, Stevie has a new discovery to share, and Stevie’s father, Dan, has married a woman half his age. Evan’s childhood pal, Father Tim, has started questioning his faith, and Evan’s relationship with publishing magnate, Julia Donne has all the earmarks of heading somewhere special.

The holidays are fast approaching when Evan is hired by the DNC to do dig up any undiscovered opposition research on the president’s controversial nominee for the U.S. Supreme Court. For starters, she has to work at light speed because the Senate is fast-tracking the nominationーand the judge, who is a darling of the far-right, is an avowed constructionist with a highly vetted paper trail nine miles long. The job begins to get murky when Evan discovers a link between the nominee and a now half-crazed, disgraced former U.S. senator who Evan was hired to vet many years ago. The stigma of that episode led Evan to vow to never work again for political kingmaker, Marcus Goldman, whose sticky fingerprints are all over this case.

And to make matters worse, Evan’s personal Moriarty, Maya Jindal, reappearsーup to her shapely eyebrows in the middle of an expanding web of lies, secrets, and betrayals that shrouds everything in Evan’s life with hopelessness and uncertainty. The case takes an even more dangerous and eerily personal turn as Evan’s descent into the fetid subterranean world of vested interests, dark money PACs, and barbaric private rituals threaten to explode everything she thought she knew about Father Tim, her own conflicted religious beliefs, and any shot she might have at a happy future with the Julia.

Galileo is Book 2 of the Evan Reed Mystery Series.

Galileo in Rome The Rise and Fall of a Troublesome Genius【電子書籍】[ William R. Shea ]

Galileo's trial by the Inquisition is one of the most dramatic incidents in the history of science and religion. Today, we tend to see this event in black and white--Galileo all white, the Church all black. Galileo in Rome presents a much more nuanced account of Galileo's relationship with Rome. The book offers a fascinating account of the six trips Galileo made to Rome, from his first visit at age 23, as an unemployed mathematician, to his final fateful journey to face the Inquisition. The authors reveal why the theory that the Earth revolves around the Sun, set forth in Galileo's Dialogue, stirred a hornet's nest of theological issues, and they argue that, despite these issues, the Church might have accepted Copernicus if there had been solid proof. More interesting, they show how Galileo dug his own grave. To get the imprimatur, he brought political pressure to bear on the Roman Censor. He disobeyed a Church order not to teach the heliocentric theory. And he had a character named Simplicio (which in Italian sounds like simpleton) raise the same objections to heliocentrism that the Pope had raised with Galileo. The authors show that throughout the trial, until the final sentence and abjuration, the Church treated Galileo with great deference, and once he was declared guilty commuted his sentence to house arrest. Here then is a unique look at the life of Galileo as well as a strikingly different view of an event that has come to epitomize the Church's supposed antagonism toward science.

The Great Physicists from Galileo to Einstein【電子書籍】[ George Gamow ]

"This book is Gamow at his best, which means the very best in science for the layman." ー Library JournalWidely recognized as one of the 20th century's foremost physicists, George Gamow was also an unusually capable popularizer of science. His talents are vividly revealed in this exciting and penetrating explanation of how the central laws of physical science evolved ー from Pythagoras' discovery of frequency ratios in the 6th century B.C. to today's research on elementary particles.Unlike many books on physics which focus entirely on fact and theory with little or no historic detail, the present work incorporates fascinating personal and biographical data about the great physicists of past and present. Thus Dr. Gamow discusses on an equal basis the trail of Galileo and the basic laws of mechanics which he discovered, or gives his personal recollections about Niels Bohr along with detailed discussion of Bohr's atomic model. You'll also find revealing glimpses of Newton, Huygens, Heisenberg, Pauli, Einstein, and many other immortals of science. Each chapter is centered around a single great figure, or at most two, with other physicists of the era and their contributions forming a background. Major topics include the dawn of physics, the Dark Ages and the Renaissance, Newtonian physics, heat as energy, electricity, the relativistic revolution, quantum theory, and the atomic nucleus and elementary particles. As Dr. Gamow points out in the Preface, the aim of this book is to give the reader the feeling of what physics is, and what kind of people physicists are. This delightfully informal approach, combined with the book's clear, easy-to-follow explanations, will especially appeal to young readers but will stimulate and entertain science enthusiasts of all ages. 1961 edition."The whole thing is a tour de force covering all the important landmarks."

Invisible Helix A new Detective Galileo from the author of the bestselling The Devotion of Suspect X【電子書籍】[ Keigo Higashino ]

'The Japanese Stieg Larsson' The Times

Detective Galileo, Keigo Higashino's best loved character from The Devotion of Suspect X, returns in a case where hidden history, and impossible crime, are linked by nearly invisible threads in surprising ways.

The body of a young man is found floating in Tokyo Bay. But his death was no accident-Ryota Uetsuji was shot. He'd been reported missing the week before by his live-in girlfriend Sonoka Shimauchi, but when detectives from the Homicide Squad go to interview her, she is nowhere to be found. She's taken time off from work, clothes and effects are missing from the apartment she shared. And when the detectives learn that she was the victim of domestic abuse, they presume that she was the killer. But her alibi is airtight-she was hours away in Kyoto when Ryota disappeared, forcing Detectives Kusanagi and Utsumi to restart their investigation.

But if Sonoko didn't kill her abusive lover, then who did? A thin thread of association leads them to their old consultant, brilliant physicist Manabu Yukawa, known in the department as "Detective Galileo." With Sonoko still missing, the detectives investigate other threads of association-an eccentric artist, who was Sonoko's mother figure after her own single mother passed; and an older woman who is the owner of a hostess club. And how is Sonoko continuing to stay one step ahead of the police searching for her? It's up to Galileo to find the nearly hidden threads of history and coincidence that connect the people around the bloody murder- which, surprisingly, connect to his own traumatic past-to unravel not merely the facts of the crime but the helix that ties them all together.

From the bestselling author of Red Herrings & White Elephants, Shaggy Dogs, Pop Goes the Weasel, They Laughed at Galileo and many more...

'If the world should blow itself up, the last audible voice would be that of an expert saying, 'It can't be done.' ? Peter Ustinov

Introduction

Curiosity will eventually lead to innovation. Fortunately we are an imaginative species who does a lot of wondering. Way back to when man first learned to walk upright and began communicating with each other, by pointing and shouting, we can find the earliest examples. Somebody once thought, 'I know, we can move that heavy rock, or dead buffalo, by rolling it along on tree trunks because it is easier than dragging it over the ground.'

This, of course, led to the wheel. It must have been around that time that some other clever soul worked out that if he held some meat over that hot fiery thing then it tasted better. It seems basic but it was innovation. Somebody somewhere decided to take the risk of burning their food down into ashes, as they knew the burning logs did, just to see if it tasted any better. But I bet there was someone else laughing at him and saying 'don't do that, it's a terrible idea,' (or whatever is was they would have said back then.) And that's innovation too. That's discovery and invention.

We have been doing it ever since in one form or another and we have come a long way as a species thanks to people who take risks and ignore the advice of wiser ones. And that, in a nutshell, is what this book is all about. You see, that for all of our innovations and invention over the last six thousand years it is incredible to understand that the one thing that has not developed at all is the human brain.

Believe it or not the pre-historic human brain was perfectly capable of understanding how to use Windows 8.1 and could easily have landed a rocket on the moon if only the information it was given was better evolved at the time. The brain itself was already fine and all it needed was programming. That, of course, is what has happened to it over the many years since.

More recently, in 1916 somebody said of the radio, 'the wireless music box is of no imaginable commercial value. Who would pay for a message sent to nobody in particular?'

Well, that would have been a fair question at then but imagine a world without the radio. And the same was said of the television when it was dismissed as a novelty. 'American families will not sit around staring at a plywood box for hours at a time.

How wrong can you be?

This, then, is the short story of Galileo Galilee and how he has been proved right about everything.

From the author of the internationally bestselling, award-winning The Devotion of Suspect X comes the latest novel featuring "Detective Galileo"

In 2011, The Devotion of Suspect X was a hit with critics and readers alike. The first major English language publication from the most popular bestselling writer in Japan, it was acclaimed as "stunning," "brilliant," and "ingenious." Now physics professor Manabu YukawaーDetective Galileoーreturns in a new case of impossible murder, where instincts clash with facts and theory with reality.

Yoshitaka, who was about to leave his marriage and his wife, is poisoned by arsenic-laced coffee and dies. His wife, Ayane, is the logical suspectーexcept that she was hundreds of miles away when he was murdered. The lead detective, Tokyo Police Detective Kusanagi, is immediately smitten with her and refuses to believe that she could have had anything to do with the crime. His assistant, Kaoru Utsumi, however, is convinced Ayane is guilty. While Utsumi's instincts tell her one thing, the facts of the case are another matter.

University of Padua

La Inquisici?n Cat?lica

La Estrella de Kepler

Galileo y Johannes Kepler

El Mensajero Estelar

Galileo Conoce al Papa Pablo V

La Inquisici?n lo Visita de Nuevo

Discurso sobre las Mareas

Un Encuentro con el Papa Urbano VIII

El Ensayador

Di?logo sobre los Dos Principales Sistemas Mundiales

Juicio y Encarcelamiento

Trabajo Final y Muerte

?Y mucho, mucho m?s!
