An Immigrant's Love Letter to the West【電子書籍】[ Konstantin Kisin ]

For all the West's failings - terrible food, cold weather, and questionable politicians with funny hair to name a few - it has its upsides. Konstantin would know. Growing up in the Soviet Union, he experienced first-hand the horrors of a socialist paradise gone wrong, having lived in extreme poverty with little access to even the most basic of necessities. It wasn't until he moved to the UK that Kisin found himself thriving in an open and tolerant society, receiving countless opportunities he would never have had otherwise.

Funny, provocative and unswervingly perceptive, An Immigrant's Love letter to the West interrogates the developing sense of self-loathing the Western sphere has adopted and offers an alternative perspective. Exploring race politics, free speech, immigration and more, Kisin argues that wrongdoing and guilt need not pervade how we feel about the West - and Britain - today, and that despite all its ups and downs, it remains one of the best places to live in the world.

After all, if an immigrant can't publicly profess their appreciation for this country, who can?

Dreamers of the Ghetto Journeys of Hope: Tales of Jewish Immigrants in a Changing World【電子書籍】[ Israel Zangwill ]

In "Dreamers of the Ghetto," Israel Zangwill crafts a poignant exploration of the immigrant experience, depicting the lives of Eastern European Jews in the early 20th century. Through a rich narrative style that blends realism with lyrical prose, Zangwill invites readers into the vibrant yet often strife-ridden world of his characters, who grapple with their aspirations and the harsh realities of ghetto life. The book sits within the broader context of Jewish literature that emerged during this period, addressing themes of identity, aspiration, and the quest for belonging amid societal challenges. Israel Zangwill, a cornerstone of Jewish literary tradition and a prominent social activist, drew from his own heritage and experiences to inform his work. Born in 1864, Zangwill was profoundly influenced by the struggles of his contemporaries and by the Zionist movement, which shaped much of his outlook on identity and community. His unique position as an immigrant in Britain endowed him with keen insights into cultural displacement and the dreams ignited by the promise of a new life. "Dreamers of the Ghetto" is highly recommended for anyone interested in diaspora literature, social history, or the profound narratives of resilience and hope. Zangwill's nuanced portrayal of his characters creates a tapestry of dreams, making this book not merely a reflection on the past but a mirror to the ongoing struggles of immigrants today.

The Adventures of Jimmie Dale【電子書籍】[ Frank Lucius Packard ]

In "The Adventures of Jimmie Dale," Frank Lucius Packard masterfully weaves a tale of mystery and intrigue, capturing the essence of early 20th-century urban life. The narrative follows Jimmie Dale, a wealthy socialite by day and a masked avenger by night, as he navigates the seedy underbelly of New York City in pursuit of justice. Packard's prose is both vivid and engaging, utilizing a blend of suspense and adventure that reflects the serialized storytelling popular in the early 1900s. The book is a hallmark of the detective fiction genre and epitomizes the themes of duality and moral complexity, challenging the reader's perceptions of heroism and societal norms. Frank Lucius Packard, a Canadian-born author, was deeply influenced by the burgeoning urban milieu and the social dynamics of his time. His experiences in journalism and theatre provided him with a unique perspective on narrative pacing and character development, which are evident in this work. Packard's keen observation of the human condition and its flaws shines through in Jimmie Dale's character, embodying the struggle between good and evil. I highly recommend "The Adventures of Jimmie Dale" to fans of classic detective fiction and those interested in early 20th-century culture. Packard's rich storytelling and dynamic characters not only provide thrilling escapades but also invite reflection on ethical dilemmas, making it a compelling read that resonates beyond its historical backdrop.

The Strange Death of Europe Immigration, Identity, Islam【電子書籍】[ Mr Douglas Murray ]

THE SUNDAY TIMES NUMBER ONE BESTSELLER
A WATERSTONES POLITICS PAPERBACK OF THE YEAR, 2018

The Strange Death of Europe is a highly personal account of a continent and culture caught in the act of suicide. Declining birth-rates, mass immigration and cultivated self-distrust and self-hatred have come together to make Europeans unable to argue for themselves and incapable of resisting their own comprehensive change as a society.

This book is not only an analysis of demographic and political realities, but also an eyewitness account of a continent in self-destruct mode. It includes reporting from across the entire continent, from the places where migrants land to the places they end up, from the people who appear to welcome them in to the places which cannot accept them.

Told from this first-hand perspective, and backed with impressive research and evidence, the book addresses the disappointing failure of multiculturalism, Angela Merkel's U-turn on migration, the lack of repatriation and the Western fixation on guilt. Murray travels to Berlin, Paris, Scandinavia, Lampedusa and Greece to uncover the malaise at the very heart of the European culture, and to hear the stories of those who have arrived in Europe from far away. In each chapter he also takes a step back to look at the bigger issues which lie behind a continent's death-wish, answering the question of why anyone, let alone an entire civilisation, would do this to themselves?

He ends with two visions of Europe ? one hopeful, one pessimistic ? which paint a picture of Europe in crisis and offer a choice as to what, if anything, we can do next.

The Perilous Trade "Book Publishing in Canada, 1946-2006"【電子書籍】[ Roy Macskimming ]

A book that will fascinate and inform readers who love Canadian writing

Part cultural history, part personal memoir, this accomplished, sweeping, yet intimate book demonstrates that the story of Canadian publishing is one of the cornerstones of our literary history.

In The Perilous Trade, former publisher, literary journalist, and industry insider Roy MacSkimming chronicles the extraordinary journey of English-language publishing from the Second World War to the present. During a period of unparalleled transformation, Canada grew from a cultural colony fed on the literary offerings of London and New York to a mature nation whose writers are celebrated around the world. Crucial to that evolution were three generations of book publishers?mavericks, gamblers, entrepreneurs, political activists, and true believers?sharing a conviction that Canadians need books of their own.

Canadian publishing has long made headlinesーbe it Jack McClelland’ s outrageous publicity stunts, American takeovers, the collapse of venerable imprints, or bold political moves to ensure the industry’s survival. Roy MacSkimming takes us behind the headlines to draw memorable portraits of the men and women who built Canada’s literary renaissance. With a novelist’s eye for character and incident, he weaves their tangled relationships with authors, agents, booksellers and each other into a lively narrative rich in anecdote and revealing personal recollection. Canadian publishers large and small have nurtured a literature of extraordinary diversity and breadth, MacSkimming argues, giving us English Canada’s greatest cultural achievement.

The Jungle The Shocking Expos? of Immigrant Struggles, Corporate Greed, and the Fight for Justice in Industrial America【電子書籍】[ Upton Sinclair ]

One book changed the way a nation eats ー and awakened a generation to injustice. The Jungle isn't just a novel. It's a thunderclap in American history. In this harrowing and unforgettable work, Upton Sinclair tells the story of Jurgis Rudkus, a Lithuanian immigrant who comes to Chicago chasing the American Dreamーonly to find himself swallowed by the brutal realities of poverty, corruption, and exploitation in the meatpacking industry. Published in 1906, The Jungle exposed the unsanitary, unsafe, and inhumane conditions of industrial labor. It shocked the public, sparked outrage, and directly led to federal reforms like the Pure Food and Drug Act. But beyond the headlines, Sinclair's story is deeply humanーabout the resilience of the working class, the cost of capitalism, and the enduring struggle for dignity. "I aimed at the public's heart, and by accident I hit it in the stomach." ー Upton Sinclair "One of the most important American novels ever written." ー The New York Times "Still painfully relevant in today's conversations about labor, immigration, and inequality." ー Goodreads Reviewer Perfect for readers of political fiction, labor history, or social justice, The Jungle remains a landmark of investigative literature and moral urgency. The Still Brimming Twilit River【電子書籍】[ Nicholas Hagger ]

The Still Brimming Twilit River is volume 7 of Nicholas Hagger’s Collected Stories and follows The First Dazzling Chill of Winter/ (2016), which dealt with impending old age. The 1,202 short stories in the previous six volumes cover six decades (from the 1960s to the 2010s) in the life of Philip Rawley. This seventh volume covers a seventh decade and contains 220 more stories and deals with his defiance of growing old. Philip Rawley’s attitude is akin to Tennyson’s Ulysses who, despite the infirmities of old age, is ready to 'sail beyond the sunset and the baths/Of all the western stars' in search of new experience and new adventures. These mini-stories present a range of characters from a stable society. A number of these characters reappear in other stories, and are presented with their strengths, follies and flaws in different situations. The stories offer a complete literary experience in a page or two, and their brevity is innovatory. The combination of opposites in their vivid titles derives inspiration from the 17th century: Dr Johnson’s definition of the wit of the Metaphysical poets as 'a combination of dissimilar images' in which 'the most heterogeneous ideas are yoked by violence together' (‘Life of Cowley’). These stories are verbal paintings and present an image in action with a poet’s eye for significant detail. Hagger’s stories are imagistic, economical and vivid in clean prose and reflect the Age. They contain memorable images and studies of character. They are ideal for short concentration spans, reading on journeys or in bed. They drop into the consciousness like stones and leave the mind to reflect on the spreading ripples.

Immigrant Canadian Articulations' provides an analysis of the theoretical, critical and fictional works of South Asian and the Caribbean immigrant writers in Canada, and discusses their representativeness as writers of Canadian literature. Through the study of minority writing in Canada, Shaily Sharma portrays a dialogue between immigrant writers and the Canadian nation state within its multicultural framework. She argues that the Canadian multicultural act might serve as a powerful weapon with the potential to accord social equality and liberty to all members of the society; it is still held responsible for ethnic exclusivity and commodification. The individual essays provide theoretical background to the development of Canadian nation and its integral aspect, i,e. multiculturalism, as well as fictional works affected and effected by the politics of identity, belongingness, and memories of homeland. Authors discussed include Neil Bissoondath, Rama Bai Espinet, Arun Prabha Mukherjee, Himani Bannerji, Rohinton Mistry, and Anita Rau Badami. Imported Americans: The Story of the Experiences of a Disguised American and His Wife Studying the Immigration Question【電子書籍】[ Broughton Brandenburg ]

That there was a tremendous increase in immigration in prospect was announced by the agents of the great immigrant-carrying lines of steamships as early as January of 1903. All Europe seemed stirred with that tide of unrest. It was to be a great year for the departure from the Continental hives of the new swarms, and an authoritative foreign journal prophesied that the sum total would be 1,500,000 for the twelve months. In America the cry was redoubled that the doors of the United States should be altogether closed or rendered still more difficult to pass. The Shattuc bill was about to find favor in the House of Representatives, the Lodge bill was cooking in Boston, and in every newspaper or periodical of the land articles and editorials were appearing that attacked or defended various phases, conditions or proposed remedies of immigration. Even in the German and Italian papers, which speak for Germany, Austria and Italy, the most fertile immigrant-producing grounds, there was but the barest trifle printed that was from the point of view of the immigrant himself. In the American papers there was absolutely nothing. One day I was in the Grand Central station in New York, ready to take a train for New Haven, and as I came up to the gate I saw, passing through before me, a group of more than twenty newly arrived Italians, following the leadership of one short, black, thick-set prosperous-seeming man who spoke Italian to the left and broken English to the right. They were tagged for Boston and other New England towns, and, bearing their heavy burdens of luggage and bundles, with faces drawn with weariness, eyes dull with too much gazing at the wonders of a new land, with scarce a smile among them except on the faces of the unreasoning children, they were herded together, counted off as they passed through the gate and taken aboard the train, much as if they had been some sort of animals worth more than ordinary care, instead of rational human beings. Here they were in charge of the conductor, who grouped them in seats according to the towns to which they were destined.

The Education of an American Dreamer How a Son of Greek Immigrants Learned His Way from a Nebraska Diner to Washington, Wall Street, and Beyond【電子書籍】[ Peter G. Peterson ]

With insight and refreshing candor, Peter G. Peterson describes his remarkable life story beginning in Kearney, Nebraska as an eight-year-old manning the cash register at his father's Greek diner through his "Mad Men" advertising days, to Secretary of Commerce in Nixon's paranoid White House, to the tumultuous days of Lehman Brothers, and to the creation of The Blackstone Group, one of the great financial enterprises in recent times.
In The Education of the American Dreamer, Peterson chronicles the progress of this journey with irony, humor and, sometimes, painful honesty. Within these pages are stories of marriage and family hardship; lessons in political gamesmanship; thoughts on his obsessive desire to succeed; and, finally, learning the meaning of "enough." From his advertising days in Chicago in the 1950's to becoming the youngest CEO of a Fortune 300 Company, he shares with us his rise to the top and the price paid along the way. As the youngest Cabinet member in the Nixon administration, he describes his survival techniques in a hubris-driven and paranoid White House, including his turbulent turf wars with Treasury Secretary John Connally leading to Peterson's abrupt and highly publicized firing. His stewardship of Lehman Brothers is a Shakespearian tale of a CEO who struggled to deal with partners who were plotting his demise and, at the same time, turning an institution on the brink of bankruptcy to one with 5 straight years of record profits.
His life's story is about doing well by doing good. In the wake of Blackstone's highly successful public offering, Peterson found himself an 80-year old instant billionaire, on the verge of retirement. And like many lifetime workers and over-achievers, he suddenly confronts an unexpected, depressing identity crisis. His solution? Committing a great bulk of his net proceeds to establish the Peter G. Peterson Foundation, his philanthropic endeavor to do something about America's politically untouchable challenges that threaten America's future, among them massive entitlement obligations, ballooning health care costs, and our energy gluttony.
Ultimately, this is a man's account of his legendary successes, humiliating failures, and personal tragedies - a testament to a remarkable life and, indeed, to the American Dream itself.

Accidental Anarchist How the Killing of a Humble Jewish Immigrant by Chicago's Chief of Police Exposed the Conflict Between Law & Order and Civil Rights in Early 20th Century America【電子書籍】[ Walter Roth ]

It was a bitter cold morning in March, 1908. A nineteen-year-old Jewish immigrant traversed the confusing and unfamiliar streets of Chicago?a one-and-a-half-hour-long journey?from his ghetto home on Washburne Avenue to the luxurious Lincoln Place residence of Police Chief George Shippy. He arrived at 9 a.m. Within minutes after knocking on the front door, Lazarus Averbuch lay dead on the hallway floor, shot no less than six times by the chief himself. Why Averbuch went to the police chief's house or exactly what happened after that is still not known. This is the most comprehensive account ever written about this episode that stunned Chicago and won the attention of the entire country. It does not "solve" the mystery as much as it places it in the context of a nation that was unsure how to absorb all of the immigrants flowing across its borders. It attempts to reconstruct the many different perspectives and concerns that comprised the drama surrounding the investigation of Averbuch's killing.

It's the Roaring Twenties, Jake and Raisa Kessel are married with two kids and a pile of growing debt. They need a change, some new pickings. They pack up for the bright lights and new opportunity in Port Huron, Michigan. They are living high on the hog; overnight, Jake finds himself standing in endless soup lines and even longer job lines. It's The Great Depression. Jake knows he has to make some 'fast money' to get his family back to Wyoming, even if it might be illegal or dangerous. Back in a Lovell, Wyoming share cropper's shack, Jake and Raisa struggle to put food on the table and clothes on their backs. Raisa isn't cut out to do the hard physical field work and soon she's down to the flesh on her bones; she gives Jake an ultimatum. It's just the push Jake needed as they move off the rented farm and into their own tar-papered home in town. Then, Japanese bombs fall on Pearl Harbor and everything changes. The government needs men to build the Heart Mountain relocation camp and Jake signs on. Months later, Jake takes a job with Marathon Oil giving him a steady pay check and a retirement plan. The tide has turned, life is good. Their only son enlists to fight in WWII in Europe and they each have brothers who are Japanese POW's. Who will come home and who won't? What does the end of their life together bring? Who will be the first to die? Life is not always what it promises or seems and sometimes it breaks a person. When Jake is left alone after Raisa dies, he's like a boat without a rudder. What does he do to fill the void? He and longtime friend, Pastor Floyd Schweiger take an interest in saving the Pryor Mountain wild horses-but will this diversion fill his lonesome nights without Raisa? Flesh on the Bone is a touching, realistic account of a true American family, filled with ambition, promises, love and loss; it is a legacy of surviving the ups and downs of life. The novel twists and turns through family stories passed down and fleshed out with imagination and carefully researched historical events. Schutte lays the tension, poverty, and daily grind of the lives of her characters on the table. She has a knack for getting into their heads and hearts and taking the reader with her. This---is a family saga, a story of the personal struggles of the immigrant's children!

The Measure of Distance An Immigrant Novel【電子書籍】[ Pauline Kaldas ]

They went to Cairo, leaving behind the adobe houses built along the edge of the Nile and the villagers who all knew each other and who had lived on this land for more centuries than their names could count. Behind them, they left the imprint of their footsteps for others who might follow.

This family saga begins when Salim, the eldest of three brothers, moves to Cairo at the start of the twentieth century with dreams of opening his own bakery. His decision to leave his ancestral village of Kom Ombo despite his parents’ objections reverberates across generations, kicking off a series of migrations that shape the lives of his family and their descendants throughout the decades that follow. These migrations only intensify after the revolution of 1952ーwith Misha, Salim’s eldest grandchild, being the first to flee to “Amreeka,” his annual phone calls home becoming briefer and briefer with each passing year.

Culminating with the 2011 protests in Tahrir Square, Pauline Kaldas’s The Measure of Distance is a detailed portrait of immigration against the backdrop of an Egypt in constant flux and an America that is always falling short of the fantasy. Alternating between tales of those who migrate and those who stay, this expansive novel follows its characters as they determine the course of their lives, often choosing one uncertainty over another as they migrate to new lands or plant their roots more firmly in their homeland.
