Analyse von E.T.A. Hoffmanns Erz?hlung 'Der Sandmann' Im besonderen Hinblick auf die Interpretation durch Sigmund Freud und zentrale Motive【電子書籍】[ Angelika Zahn ]

|

Tennessee Williams' 'A Streetcar Named Desire' - Contrasting the Play With the Movie from 1951 Directed by Elia Kazan Contrasting the Play With the Movie from 1951 Directed by Elia Kazan【電子書籍】[ Valerie Hurst ]

Seminar paper from the year 2009 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, grade: 1,8, University of Tubingen (Englisches Seminar), course: Introduction to Literary Studies, language: English, abstract: ''The marvelous performances in [this] great movie [...] [are] only slightly marred by [a] Hollywood ending.' Tennessee Williams' (cf. Yacowar). Tennessee Williams' play 'A Streetcar Named Desire' from 1947 was often staged and interpreted. It was also the base of Elia Kazan's famous and remarkable movie from 1951. Since a book allows for interpretation, the movie features a different realization. This paper will contrast the written form with the film version. To illustrate the different realizations there will be a closer look at the two special and important scenes, ten and eleven, which are exemplarily for the differences in the general conversion. The decision for exactly these scenes is founded in the striking differences in conversion and adaptation and by reason of plenty of content rapidly beat down in these scenes. Due to many influences, the film departs in places completely from Williams' original. These influences and differences will be described in the following first part. Particular attention will then be paid to the music and noises, and the moods and emotions caused by these. And, due to being close linked to the adaptation of the whole movie, the effects of censorship will be explained. The impact is to work out in which ways the movie is adapted to the play and where it distinguishes from it.

Kobo Abe - der japanische Kafka? Ein Vergleich zwischen Abes 'Das Gesicht des Anderen' und dem Werk Franz Kafkas【電子書籍】[ Angelika Zahn ]

|

According to Wikipedia: "Baree, Son of Kazan is the eponymous name of a 1917 novel about a wild wolfling pup named Baree. It was written by James Oliver Curwood as the sequel to Kazan. Baree, Son of Kazan is a story about a wild wolfdog pup sired by Kazan (1/4 wolf, 3/4 dog) and born of blind Greywolf (pure wolf). This story is about Baree's survival after being separated from his parents as a young pup. He eventually finds himself in the care of Nepeese and her father Pierrot, a trapper. He bonds with Nepeese, and the story goes from there. James Oliver Curwood took the well used "a boy and his dog" formula, and created a great adventure story about a girl and her dog. A successful formula featuring a strong heroine, rather than a male hero, that he used in many of his stories."

The first biography of the comedic genius behind the cult favorite TV show "Da Ali G Show" and the high grossingーand gross outーsmash film Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan.

If the millions of fans who flocked to the blockbuster films Borat and Talladega Nights tuned in to Sacha Baron Cohen's interviews on late night TV hoping to see the man behind the characters, they were sure to be disappointed. Who exactly is this Sacha Baron Cohen, who has everyone from TV personalities to the government of Kazakhstan all riled up? Did he fool all the politicians and luminaries who made such idiots of themselves on "Da Ali G Show" or did it just look like it? Was it the RV-driving Southern good ole frat boys in BoratーCultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan who got taken for a ride or were their on-camera remarks fair game? And how did he get a fianc?e as foxy as Isla Fisher, the babe from "Wedding Crashers"?

Tracing his roots as the soft-spoken son of an English clothier, biographer Tracy follows Cohen's path to Cambridge, where he ditched the idea of pursuing a Ph.D. for an infinitely trickier comedy career. As we wait to see just what Cohen will come up with next, Tracy gets to the man behind the charactersーand details the outrageous moves Cohen has made in character as the boorish English hip-hop journalist Ali G, the tender and tactless Kazakh journalist Borat Sagdiyev, and more

According to Wikipedia: "Kazan is the eponymous name of a 1914 novel about a tame wolf-dog hybrid named Kazan. It was written by James Oliver Curwood as the prequel to Baree, Son of Kazan... James Oliver Curwood, (June 12, 1878 August 13, 1927), was an American novelist and conservationist. A great number of his works were turned into movies, several of which starred Nell Shipman as a brave and adventurous woman in the wilds of the north. Many films from Curwood's writings were made during his lifetime, as well as after his passing through to the 1950s. In 1988 French director Jean-Jacques Annaud used his 1916 novel, The Grizzly King to make the film The Bear. Elia Kazan: A Life【電子書籍】[ Elia Kazan ]

ONE OF THE HOLLYWOOD REPORTER'S 100 GREATEST FILM BOOKS OF ALL TIME ? In this amazing autobiography, Kazan at seventy-eight brings us the undiluted telling of his storyーand revelation of himselfーall the passion, vitality, and truth, the almost outrageous honesty, that have made him so formidable a stage director (A Streetcar Named Desire, Death of a Salesman, All My Sons, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, Tea and Sympathy), film director (On the Waterfront, East of Eden, Gentleman’s Agreement, Splendor in the Grass, Baby Doll, The Last Tycoon, A Face in the Crowd), and novelist (the number-one best-seller The Arrangement.)

“This is the best autobiography I’ve read by a prominent American in I don’t know how many years. It is endlessly absorbing and I believe this is because it concerns a man who is looking to find a coherent philosophy that will be tough enough to contain all that is ugly in his person and his experience, yet shall prove sufficiently compassionate to give honest judgment on himself and others. Somehow, the author brings this off. Elia Kazan: A Life has that candor of confession which is possible only when the deepest wounds have healed and honesty can achieve what honesty so rarely arrives atーa rich and hearty flavor. By such means, a famous director has written a book that offers the kind of human wealth we find in a major novel.” ーNorman Mailer

Kazan gives us his sense of himself as an outsider (a Greek rug merchant’s son born in Turkey, an immigrant’s son raised in New York and educated at Williams College). He takes us into the almost accidental sojourn at the Yale Drama School that triggered his commitment to theatre, and his edgy, exciting apprenticeship with the new and astonishing Group Theatre, as stagehand and stage managerーand as actor (Waiting for Lefty, Golden Boy) . . . his first nervous and then successful attempts at directing for theatre and movies (The Skin of Our Teeth, A Tree Grows in Brooklyn) . . . his return to New York to co-found the Actors Studio (and his long and ambivalent relationship with Lee Strasberg) . . . his emergence as premier director on both coasts.

With his director’s eye for the telling scene, Kazan shares the joys and complications of production, his unique insights on acting, directing, and producing. He makes us feel the close presence of the actors, producers, and writers he’s worked withーJames Dean, Marlon Brando, Tennessee Williams, Vivien Leigh, Tallulah Bankhead, Sam Spiegel, Darryl Zanuck, Harold Clurman, Arthur Miller, Budd Schulberg, James Baldwin, Clifford Odets, and John Steinbeck among them. He gives us a frank and affectionate portrait of Marilyn Monroe. He talks with startling candor about himself as husband andーin the years where he obsessively sought adventure outside marriageーas lover. For the first time, he discusses his Communist Party years and his wrenching decision in 1952 to be a cooperative witness before HUAC. He writes about his birth as a writer.

The pace and organic drama of his narrative, his grasp of the life and politics of Broadway and Hollywood, the keenness with which he observes the men and women and worlds around him, and, above all, the honest with which he pursues and captures his own essence, make this one of the most fascinating autobiographies of our time.

From Elia Kazan, the celebrated writer and director: a huge, stunning story of a word in tumult and an immigrant’s life redeemed.
It is a pivotal moment in history. The First World War has barely ended. Greek forces are reclaiming Anatolia from the Turks. And Stavros Topouzoglouーwho twenty years earlier, escaping oppression of Turkish rule, fled to America only to discover the venality of his dream of an American lifeーdisembarks to reclaim his homeland. Here he will recast his life and rid himself of his obsession with the elegant American woman who has become for him the ultimate symbol of success. He will marry an Anatolian girl who will treat him like and “agha.” He will have the life his father had.
Stavros’s energy and arrogance propel him to an astonishing success in his war-torn country. Deep in the interior of Anatolia, he meets the woman who he thinks will complete this new vision of himselfーthe fiercely independent Thomna. But he does not know that her passion matches his own twenty years beforeーto get to America at any cost. His passion now is for Anatolia, and bringing his mother and sister back from America, he pursues his fortune further into dangerous areas, behind the lines of combatーeven when learns that the Allies have deserted the Greeks, even after he loses his brother to the Greco-Turkish war. As the novel unfolds, we see Stavros and his dreams of wealth and home becoming inextricably entwined with the Greek causeーcompelling him, at the risk of sacrificing his life with Thomna, to a level of selflessness and heroism he has never before imagined.
Beyond the Aegean is a novel dramatically, historically, and emotionally powerful, a novel that both stands uncompromisingly on its own and brings to a close Elia Kazan’s commanding saga of one immigrant life.

This collection of nearly three hundred letters gives us the life of Elia Kazan unfiltered, with all the passion, vitality, and raw honesty that made him such an important and formidable stage director (A Streetcar Named Desire, Death of a Salesman), film director (On the Waterfront, East of Eden), novelist, and memoirist.

Elia Kazan’s lifelong determination to be a “sincere, conscious, practicing artist” resounds in these lettersーfully annotated throughoutーin every phase of his career: his exciting apprenticeship with the new and astonishing Group Theatre, as stagehand, stage manager, and actor (Waiting for Lefty, Golden Boy) . . . his first tentative and then successful attempts at directing for the theater and movies (The Skin of Our Teeth, A Tree Grows in Brooklyn) . . . his cofounding in 1947 of the Actors Studio and his codirection of the nascent Repertory Theater of Lincoln Center . . . his innovative and celebrated work on Broadway (All My Sons, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, J.B.) and in Hollywood (Gentleman’s Agreement, Splendor in the Grass, A Face in the Crowd, Baby Doll) . . . his birth as a writer.

Kazan directed virtually back-to-back the greatest American dramas of the eraーby Arthur Miller and Tennessee Williamsーand helped shape their future productions. Here we see how he collaborated with these and other writers: Clifford Odets, Thornton Wilder, John Steinbeck, and Budd Schulberg among them. The letters give us a unique grasp of his luminous insights on acting, directing, producing, as he writes to and about Marlon Brando, James Dean, Warren Beatty, Robert De Niro, Boris Aronson, and Sam Spiegel, among others. We see Kazan’s heated dealings with studio moguls Darryl Zanuck and Jack Warner, his principled resistance to film censorship, and the upheavals of his testimony before the House Committee on Un-American Activities.

These letters record as well the inner life of the artist and the man. We see his startling candor in writing to his first wife, his confidante and adviser, Molly Day Thacherーthey did not mince words with each other. And we see a father’s letters to and about his children.

An extraordinary portrait of a complex, intense, monumentally talented man who engaged the political, moral, and artistic currents of the twentieth century.

Deep Field Dispatches from the Frontlines of Aid Relief, from Pakistan to Kazan, the Punjab to the Pacific【電子書籍】[ Bamforth ]

Deep Field is a UN term for humanitarian operations that take place in extremis ? amid the destruction caused by war and natural disaster. In Deep Field: Dispatches from the Frontlines of Aid Relief Australian aid worker Tom Bamforth takes you with him as he responds to the challenges of delivering humanitarian aid under extreme circumstances travelling to some of the most dangerous and difficult regions of the world. It reads as if Don Delillo had been sent to Darfur, John Freeman, Granta.Full of amazing real life characters as well as Toms insightful commentary, full of irony and intelligent reflection, Deep Field is an intensely human story, not only of current affairs and people in crisis, but of Tom himself and how someones life can change so completely when they find themself in the wrong place at the wrong time ... or is that the right time? Deep Field is an inspiring adventure story: a unique and humanising view of the events that hit our headlines.Shortly before breakfast on a Saturday morning in 2005, 83000 people were crushed to death in a major Kashmir earthquake. A further three million were instantly rendered homeless across the hills of the Karakorum and the Himalaya. For Tom Bamforth, on an archaeological tour in Pakistans North West Frontier, this was no distant event. He felt the ground shake violently, and took cover under his bed as plaster fell from the ceiling, the walls cracked and furniture crashed around him.The numbers rose slowly, like a cricket innings, and the commentators droned. There was little new information and the television news recycled the same pictures, overlaid with a boxed scorecard showing a slowly growing body count. An apartment complex in Islamabad had collapsed: fifteen people missing. An hour later it had turned to twenty-five; by midafternoon it was 150. The army had been called up, and stood around with guns looking helpless as rapid-reaction teams with sniffer dogs arrived to pull the living from the vast pile of concrete and dust. With every news update, the death toll rose steadily and threatened to continue.

Hold Fast the Mountain Pass A Work of Historical Fiction about the Life and World of Nikos Kazantzakis【電子書籍】[ Theodora Vasils ]

Hailed as "my spiritual brother" by Albert Schweitzer, and oft-compared to fellow giants Tolstoy and Dostoevsky, Nikos Kazantzakis occupies a unique place among the literary notables of our time.
Kazantzakis was born in1883 at the height of his country's last bloody revolts to break free of Ottoman oppression. As a child, he knew the sound and smell of fear and the sight of rampaging soldiers on the streets outside his window. He knew the blood-curdling sound of people being slaughtered, and the sight of his father standing guard at the door, his knife at the ready; knew, too, the sound of his father's voice in his ear, savage and tender, whispering to not be afraid…to die like a Cretan.
For a child living in Crete at that time, there were words that dripped blood upon which an entire populace were crucified: the words revolution and freedom. These were the words that shaped and defined the struggle for freedom and spiritual perfection that was to become the focus of his life.
Beginning with those first pivotal years, Hold Fast the Mountain Pass narrates Kazantzakis' life -- his poverty, his life in exile, his struggle as a writer groping for a "voice," and describes the conditions under which that voice brought forth the prolific range of work that included The Odyssey, Zorba the Greek, and the controversial Last Temptation of Christ. It continues through the period of maturity when the floodgates opened to release the final great novels, and covers Kazantzakis from the historical perspective of his own country, and also in the larger context of the two World Wars which defined most of the twentieth century.

Kazan on Directing【電子書籍】[ Elia Kazan ]
|

Elia Kazan was the twentieth century’s most celebrated director of both stage and screen, and this monumental, revelatory book shows us the master at work. Kazan’s list of Broadway and Hollywood successesーA Streetcar Named Desire, Death of a Salesman, On the Waterfront, to name a fewーis a testament to his profound impact on the art of directing. This remarkable book, drawn from his notebooks, letters, interviews, and autobiography, reveals Kazan’s method: how he uncovered the “spine,” or core, of each script; how he analyzed each piece in terms of his own experience; and how he determined the specifics of his production. And in the final section, “The Pleasures of Directing”ーwritten during Kazan’s final yearsーhe becomes a wise old pro offering advice and insight for budding artists, writers, actors, and directors.

Kazantzakis, Volume 1 Politics of the Spirit【電子書籍】[ Peter Bien ]

|

"No author who lives in Greece," writes Peter Bien, "can avoid politics." This first volume of his major intellectual biography of Nikos Kazantzakis approaches the distinguished--and controversial--writer by describing his struggle with political questions that were in reality aspects of a fervent religious search.

Beginning with Kazantzakis's early career in fin-de-si?cle Paris and his discovery of William James, Nietzsche, and Bergson, the book continues by describing his experiments with communism in turbulent Greece, his visits to Soviet Russia, and the publication of his epic Odyssey in 1938. Bien demonstrates that politics and religion cannot be separated in Kazantzakis's development. His major concern was personal salvation, but the method he employed to win that salvation was political engagement. Did deliverance lie in nationalism? Communism? Fascism? He eventually rejected each of these possible solutions as morally appalling. Abused by both left and right, he insisted on an "eschatological politics" of spiritual fulfillment.

This compelling biography will be essential reading for Kazantzakis scholars and for a wide audience of those who already admire the Greek author's work. In addition, it will provide an introduction to the first three decades of Kazantzakis's career for those who have yet to enjoy such passionate and stirring novels as Zorba the Greek, The Greek Passion, and The Last Temptation of Christ.

This first volume provides an introduction to the initial three decades of Kazantzakis's career for those who have enjoyed such vibrant and stirring novels as Zorba the Greek, The Greek Passion, and The Last Temptation of Christ.
