Baree (Illustrated Edition) Son of Kazan【電子書籍】[ James Oliver Curwood ]

This is a 1917 story about a wolf-dog puppy who is separated from his family and is forced to learn to survive on his own. The story is full of both animal and human high-drama: Baree is rejected by his pack and almost killed in the process. And his savior, a young Cree Indian woman, is practically killed by a ruthless trapper who intends to marry her or die trying. Surprise endings for both Baree and his human.

Born in Owosso, Michigan, June 12, 1878, Curwood he left high school without graduating but was able to pass the entrance exams to the University of Michigan where he studied journalism. In 1900, Curwood sold his first story while working for the Detroit News-Tribune. By 1909 he had saved enough money to travel to the Canadian northwest, a trip that provided the inspiration for his wilderness adventure stories. The success of his novels afforded him the opportunity to return to the Yukon and Alaska for several months each year that allowed him to write more than thirty such books.

By 1922, Curwood's writings had made him a very wealthy man and he fulfilled a childhood fantasy by building Curwood Castle in Owosso. Constructed in the style of an 18th century French chateau, the estate overlooked the Shiawassee River. In one of the home's two large turrets, Curwood set up his writing studio. Curwood also owned a camp in a remote area in Baraga County, Michigan, near the Huron Mountains.

An advocate of environmentalism, Curwood was appointed to the Michigan Conservation Commission in 1926. The following year, while on a Florida fishing trip, Curwood was bitten on the thigh by what was believed to have been a spider and had an immediate allergic reaction. Health problems related to the bite escalated over the next few months and infection set in that led to his death, August 13, 1927, from blood poisoning.

Interred in the Oak Hill Cemetery in Owosso, his Curwood Castle is now a museum. During the first full weekend in June of each year, the city of Owosso holds the Curwood Festival to celebrate the city's heritage . Also in his honor, a mountain in L'Anse Township, Michigan was given the name Mount Curwood, and the L'Anse Township Park was renamed Curwood Park.

The Survivors of the Chancellor: Diary of J.R.

In "The Survivors of the Chancellor: Diary of J.R. Kazallon, Passenger," Jules Verne amalgamates his hallmark adventurous spirit with a profound exploration of human endurance against nature's indifference. The novel unfolds through the diary entries of J.R. Kazallon, a passenger stranded on a ship that succumbs to a catastrophic disaster. Through a blend of meticulous detail and gripping narrative, Verne illuminates the psychological and physical struggles of castaways marooned in the vast, unforgiving ocean, highlighting themes of survival, camaraderie, and the fragility of civilization. The text serves as both a thrilling tale and a poignant examination of human resilience, set against the backdrop of maritime exploration typical of Verne's oeuvre. Jules Verne, one of the pioneering figures in science fiction, was inspired by a fascination with the sea and technology, reflections of his background in law and an uninhibited imagination. His own experiences traveling across various maritime routes and reading accounts of maritime disasters informed his writing, infusing it with authenticity and urgency. Verne's love for adventure and knowledge translates into a narrative that is both informative and deeply engaging, capturing the essence of human struggle. This remarkable work is highly recommended for readers interested in profound explorations of survival and human spirit. Besides its thrilling plot, the text engages with the intricacies of human relationships under stress. It invites readers to ponder the resilience of humanity against overwhelmingly chaotic forces, making it a compelling must-read for admirers of classic literature and adventure tales alike.

Baree, Son of Kazan【電子書籍】[ James Oliver Curwood ]

According to Wikipedia: "Baree, Son of Kazan is the eponymous name of a 1917 novel about a wild wolfling pup named Baree. It was written by James Oliver Curwood as the sequel to Kazan. Baree, Son of Kazan is a story about a wild wolfdog pup sired by Kazan (1/4 wolf, 3/4 dog) and born of blind Greywolf (pure wolf). This story is about Baree's survival after being separated from his parents as a young pup. He eventually finds himself in the care of Nepeese and her father Pierrot, a trapper. He bonds with Nepeese, and the story goes from there. James Oliver Curwood took the well used "a boy and his dog" formula, and created a great adventure story about a girl and her dog. A successful formula featuring a strong heroine, rather than a male hero, that he used in many of his stories."

The Selected Letters of Nikos Kazantzakis【電子書籍】[ Nikos Kazantzakis ]

The life of Nikos Kazantzakisーthe author of Zorba the Greek and The Last Temptation of Christーwas as colorful and eventful as his fiction. And nowhere is his life revealed more fully or surprisingly than in his letters. Edited and translated by Kazantzakis scholar Peter Bien, this is the most comprehensive selection of Kazantzakis's letters in any language.

One of the most important Greek writers of the twentieth century, Kazantzakis (1883?1957) participated in or witnessed some of the most extraordinary events of his times, including both world wars and the Spanish and Greek civil wars. As a foreign correspondent, an official in several Greek governments, and a political and artistic exile, he led a relentlessly nomadic existence, living in France, Czechoslovakia, Austria, Germany, Italy, Spain, the Soviet Union, and England. He visited the Versailles Peace Conference, attended the tenth-anniversary celebration of the Bolshevik Revolution, interviewed Mussolini and Franco, and briefly served as a Greek cabinet ministerーall the while producing a stream of novels, poems, plays, travel writing, autobiography, and translations. The letters collected here touch on almost every aspect of Kazantzakis's rich and tumultuous life, and show the genius of a man who was deeply attuned to the artistic, intellectual, and political events of his times.

Writing makes the woman: Excerpts from selected texts and contributions 1 of 1, #1【電子書籍】[ Stanislas Kazal ]

Compendium means an abstract or summary, in the form of a compilation, of a corpus of knowledge in a given field. If some women have been great writers and have been pushed to genius by the eloquence of the heart, the delicacy of the mind, the wisdom of judgment, the art of grouping the entire world around them, the literary history has often been reserved to only a small portion. We, Corinne Tisserand -Simon and I had after this observation, the desire to give read extracts that testify to the fact that literature is not built solely from the male point of view. It is time to say that women's writing is not an epiphenomenon in literary history to pave the way for a reading that would take into account the obstacles, the compromises, the weight of forms and norms with which women fought, flayed, censored to pass as they could then, under a speech sometimes too agreed, too suitable, under masks, denial or forbidden, a woman's writing.

Baree, Son of Kazan【電子書籍】[ James Oliver Curwood ]

To Baree, for many days after he was born, the world was a vast gloomy cavern.

During these first days of his life his home was in the heart of a great windfall where Gray Wolf, his blind mother, had found a safe nest for his babyhood, and to which Kazan, her mate, came only now and then, his eyes gleaming like strange balls of greenish fire in the darkness. It was Kazan’s eyes that gave to Baree his first impression of something existing away from his mother’s side, and they brought to him also his discovery of vision. He could feel, he could smell, he could hearーbut in that black pit under the fallen timber he had never seen until the eyes came. At first they frightened him; then they puzzled him, and his fear changed to an immense curiosity. He would be looking straight at them, when all at once they would disappear. This was when Kazan turned his head. And then they would flash back at him again out of the darkness with such startling suddenness that Baree would involuntarily shrink closer to his mother, who always trembled and shivered in a strange sort of way when Kazan came in.

Baree, of course, would never know their story. He would never know that Gray Wolf, his mother, was a full-blooded wolf, and that Kazan, his father, was a dog. In him nature was already beginning its wonderful work, but it would never go beyond certain limitations. It would tell him, in time, that his beautiful wolf-mother was blind, but he would never know of that terrible battle between Gray Wolf and the lynx in which his mother’s sight had been destroyed. Nature could tell him nothing of Kazan’s merciless vengeance, of the wonderful years of their matehood, of their loyalty, their strange adventures in the great Canadian wildernessーit could make him only a son of Kazan.

But at first, and for many days, it was all mother. Even after his eyes had opened wide and he had found his legs so that he could stumble about a little in the darkness, nothing existed for Baree but his mother. When he was old enough to be playing with sticks and moss out in the sunlight, he still did not know what she looked like. But to him she was big and soft and warm, and she licked his face with her tongue, and talked to him in a gentle, whimpering way that at last made him find his own voice in a faint, squeaky yap.

Hold Fast the Mountain Pass A Work of Historical Fiction about the Life and World of Nikos Kazantzakis【電子書籍】[ Theodora Vasils ]

Hailed as "my spiritual brother" by Albert Schweitzer, and oft-compared to fellow giants Tolstoy and Dostoevsky, Nikos Kazantzakis occupies a unique place among the literary notables of our time.
Kazantzakis was born in1883 at the height of his country's last bloody revolts to break free of Ottoman oppression. As a child, he knew the sound and smell of fear and the sight of rampaging soldiers on the streets outside his window. He knew the blood-curdling sound of people being slaughtered, and the sight of his father standing guard at the door, his knife at the ready; knew, too, the sound of his father's voice in his ear, savage and tender, whispering to not be afraid…to die like a Cretan.
For a child living in Crete at that time, there were words that dripped blood upon which an entire populace were crucified: the words revolution and freedom. These were the words that shaped and defined the struggle for freedom and spiritual perfection that was to become the focus of his life.
Beginning with those first pivotal years, Hold Fast the Mountain Pass narrates Kazantzakis' life -- his poverty, his life in exile, his struggle as a writer groping for a "voice," and describes the conditions under which that voice brought forth the prolific range of work that included The Odyssey, Zorba the Greek, and the controversial Last Temptation of Christ. It continues through the period of maturity when the floodgates opened to release the final great novels, and covers Kazantzakis from the historical perspective of his own country, and also in the larger context of the two World Wars which defined most of the twentieth century.

Baree, Son of Kazan【電子書籍】[ James Oliver Curwood ]

James Oliver Curwood (1878-1927) was an American novelist and conservationist. He studied English and journalism in his youth, and eventually saved enough money to travel to the Canadian northwest. This trip would provide inspiration for his wilderness adventure stories. By 1922, Curwood was such a success that he used his new wealth to build an 18th century French chateau in Owosso, Michigan, which remains today as a museum. "Baree, Son of Kazan" is one of over 30 works in Curwood's oeuvre, and is the sequel to his popular novel, "Kazan", about a half dog, half wolf who must survive the wilderness with his she-wolf mate. Baree's tale is one of survival as well, after he is separated from his parents as a young pup. He finds himself cared for by Nepeese, the daughter of a trapper, and a lifelong friendship ensues. Dark Shadows Inside the Secret World of Kazakhstan【電子書籍】[ Joanna Lillis ]

Dark Shadows is a compelling portrait of Kazakhstan, a country that is little known in the West. Strategically located in the heart of Central Asia, sandwiched between Vladimir Putin's Russia, its former colonial ruler, and Xi Jinping's China, this vast oil-rich state is carving out its place in the world as it contends with its own complex past and present. Journalist Joanna Lillis paints a vibrant picture of this emerging nation through vivid reportage based on 13 years of on-the-ground coverage, and travels across the length and breadth of this enigmatic country that lies along the ancient Silk Road and at the geopolitical and cultural crossroads where East meets West.
Featuring tales of murder and abduction, intrigue and betrayal, extortion and corruption, this book explores how a president, Nursultan Nazarbayev, transformed himself into a potentate and the economically-struggling state he inherited at the fall of the USSR into a swaggering 21st-century monocracy. A colourful cast of characters brings the politics to life: from strutting oligarch to sleeping villagers, from principled politicians to striking oilmen, from crusading journalists to courageous campaigners.
Traversing dust-blown deserts and majestic mountains, taking in glitzy cities and dystopian landscapes, Dark Shadows conjures up Kazakhstan as a living, breathing place, full of extraordinary people living extraordinary lives.
