Kazantzakis, Volume 2 Politics of the Spirit【電子書籍】[ Peter Bien ]

Putting Greek writer Nikos Kazantzakis's vast output into the context of his lifelong spiritual quest and the turbulent politics of twentieth-century Greece, Peter Bien argues that Kazantzakis was a deeply flawed genius--not always artistically successful, but a remarkable figure by any standard. This is the second and final volume of Bien's definitive and monumental biography of Kazantzakis (1883-1957). It covers his life after 1938, the period in which he wrote Zorba the Greek and The Last Temptation of Christ, the novels that brought him his greatest fame.

A demonically productive novelist, poet, playwright, travel writer, autobiographer, and translator, Kazantzakis was one of the most important Greek writers of the twentieth century and the only one to achieve international recognition as a novelist. But Kazantzakis's writings were just one aspect of an obsessive struggle with religious, political, and intellectual problems. In the 1940s and 1950s, a period that included the Greek civil war and its aftermath, Kazantzakis continued this engagement with undiminished energy, despite every obstacle, producing in his final years novels that have become world classics.

The Great Thinkers of the Kazakh Steppe【電子書籍】[ Yerkebulan Dzhelbuldin Dana Jeteyeva ]

This book is a collection of biographies of the great people that made Kazakhstan's history. Some of them were real heroes of their time, some were not understood and were even thought they were traitors, however, their input into the future was very significant and their achievements cannot be diminished. You will find out about our national composers-akyns, poets and Khans. You will learn about the three judges that established the first legal system in Kazakhstan. Some of the characters might seem mythical, but the stories about them still live among us. -------------------------------------------------------- Yerkebulan Dzhelbuldin was born in 1934 in Kazakhstan. He worked as a teacher in the Soviet Union for all his life and was gathering the materials about our country and its history for his book after Kazakhstan acquired its independence. Many facts were concealed from our people and even Kazakhs did not know about their Khans and philosophers. This book was never published before, but you can find some information about these people in the internet nowadays. I translated these materials and put them into a book with the sketches of all the characters. I am Dana Jeteyeva, translator of this and other books, specializing in translations of Kazakh fairy tales and other interesting facts about Kazakhstan. I want people all over the world learn about our country, as, even if it is a big country in the middle of Eurasia, not many people know anything about it. I hope my previous experience - teaching English, Kazakh for foreigners, marketing specialist and translating as well as my natural curiosity will help passing this information to as many people as possible.

The Ambivalent Legacy of Elia Kazan The Politics of the Post-HUAC Films【電子書籍】[ Ron Briley ]

Elia Kazan first made a name for himself on the Broadway stage, directing productions of such classics as The Skin of Our Teeth, Death of Salesman, and A Streetcar Named Desire. His venture to Hollywood was no less successful. He won an Oscar for only his second film, Gentleman’s Agreement, and his screen version of Streetcar has been hailed as one of the great film adaptations of a staged work. But in 1952, Kazan’s stature was compromised when he was called to testify before the House Un-American Activities Committee (HUAC). Kazan’s decision to name names allowed him to continue his filmmaking career, but at what price to him and the Hollywood community?

In The Ambivalent Legacy of Elia Kazan: The Politics of the Post HUAC Films, Ron Briley looks at the work of this unquestionable master of cinema whose testimony against former friends and associates influenced his body of work. By closely examining the films Kazan helmed between 1953 and 1976, Briley suggests that the director’s work during this period reflected his ongoing leftist and progressive political orientation. The films scrutinized in this book include Viva Zapata!, East of Eden, A Face in the Crowd, Splendor in the Grass, America America, The Last Tycoon, and most notably, On the Waterfront, which many critics interpret as an effort to justify his HUAC testimony.

In 1999, Kazan was awarded an honorary Oscar that caused considerable division within the Hollywood community, highlighting the lingering effects of the director’s testimony. The blacklist had a lasting impact on those who were named and those who did the naming, and the controversy of the HUAC hearings still resonates today. The Ambivalent Legacy of Elia Kazan will be of interest to historians of postwar America, cinema scholars, and movie fans who want to revisit some of the director’s most significant films in a new light.

Kazantzakis, Volume 1 Politics of the Spirit【電子書籍】[ Peter Bien ]

"No author who lives in Greece," writes Peter Bien, "can avoid politics." This first volume of his major intellectual biography of Nikos Kazantzakis approaches the distinguished--and controversial--writer by describing his struggle with political questions that were in reality aspects of a fervent religious search.

Beginning with Kazantzakis's early career in fin-de-si?cle Paris and his discovery of William James, Nietzsche, and Bergson, the book continues by describing his experiments with communism in turbulent Greece, his visits to Soviet Russia, and the publication of his epic Odyssey in 1938. Bien demonstrates that politics and religion cannot be separated in Kazantzakis's development. His major concern was personal salvation, but the method he employed to win that salvation was political engagement. Did deliverance lie in nationalism? Communism? Fascism? He eventually rejected each of these possible solutions as morally appalling. Abused by both left and right, he insisted on an "eschatological politics" of spiritual fulfillment.

This compelling biography will be essential reading for Kazantzakis scholars and for a wide audience of those who already admire the Greek author's work. In addition, it will provide an introduction to the first three decades of Kazantzakis's career for those who have yet to enjoy such passionate and stirring novels as Zorba the Greek, The Greek Passion, and The Last Temptation of Christ.

This first volume provides an introduction to the initial three decades of Kazantzakis's career for those who have enjoyed such vibrant and stirring novels as Zorba the Greek, The Greek Passion, and The Last Temptation of Christ.

Stir Crazy in Kazakhstan One Person’S Experience, Coping with Living and Working in a Strange Environment Where Normal, Day to Day Activities Can Turn out to Be Monumental in Their Execution and Where Any Comfort Zones Are Hard to Find【電子書籍】

Kazakhstan a country of extremes, of both culture and weather. This is an account of one persons experience, coping with living and working in a strange environment where normal, day to day activities can turn out to be monumental in their execution and where any comfort zones are hard to find! My experiences far exceeded any expectations or anticipations I had had and I had to draw on reserves I never knew I even possessed. I describe living conditions and the difficulties I encountered both in the workplace a drug treatment centre and in forming relationships. I found myself caught up in a court case in which one of my interpreters had been charged with possession of illegal substances ( namely heroin). Having broken my arm I had the dubious privilege of intimate knowledge of a Kazakhstani hospital, and ended my year in a wild, isolated and basic farmhouse on the borders of Kazakhstan, Russia and China.
