His exploration into the moral and social dilemmas posed by ignorance reflects a deeply analytical approach, offering readers a comprehensive critique of contemporary socio-political dynamics and advocating for enlightenment through education and critical thought. John Foster, a prominent essayist and critic, was profoundly influenced by the intellectual currents of his time. His own experiences in a rapidly changing world, marked by the burgeoning of industrialization and the reform movements that characterized early 19th-century Britain, compel him to confront the dangers of ignorance. English Language Learners and Math Discourse, Participation, and Community in Reform-Oriented, Middle School Mathematics Classes【電子書籍】[ Holly Hansen-Thomas ]

|

Taking a community of practice perspective that highlights the learner as part of a community, rather than a lone individual responsible for her/his learning, this ethnographically-influenced study investigates how Latina/o English Language Learners (ELLs) in middle school mathematics classes negotiated their learning of mathematics and mathematical discourse. The classes in which the Latina/o students were enrolled used a reform-oriented approach to math learning; the math in these classes wasーto varying degreesーtaught using a hands-on, discovery approach to learning where group learning was valued, and discussions in and about math were critical.

This book presents the stories of how six immigrant and American-born ELLs worked with their three teachers of varied ethnicity, education, experience with second language learners, and training in reform-oriented mathematics curricula to gain a degree of competence in the mathematical discourse they used in class. Identity, participation, situated learning, discourse use by learners of English as a Second Language (ESL), framing in language, and student success in mathematics are all critical notions that are highlighted within this school-based research.

|

The year 2025 marks the 50th anniversary of the passing of the Family Law Act, the single most intrusive and destructive piece of legislation to ever pass the Australian parliament.

In that time the Family Court has been the subject of dozens of government inquiries and attempts at reform on its road to becoming a cash cow for lawyers and the single most hated jurisdiction in the country.

Far from the caring, helpful court promoting joint custody and cooperation after separation, as its founders envisaged, the Family Court rapidly became a law unto itself, imposing sole custody on separating families despite all the documented harm of this style of custody order, while denying non-custodial parents contact with their children on the flimsiest of excuses.

Overly legalistic, enormously bureaucratic, secretive, and unaccountable, defying public norms of decency and probity, the ideologically driven Family Court and its so-called evil sister the Child Support Agency have remained remarkably resistant to reform and indifferent to the public odium they attract.

Successive governments from both left and right have failed to listen to their constituents and respond to their concerns. They have resorted to vested inquiries in the hands of the mandarins and publicly funded elites whose feigned attempts to listen to the views of ordinary people are a stain on the Australian Public Service.

In terms of human suffering, the Australian public has already paid dearly for the failure to fix outdated, badly administered and inappropriate institutions dealing with family breakdown. The country's failure to reform family law and child support is ultimately a failure of democracy itself.

In "Thoughts on Educational Topics and Institutions," George S. Boutwell presents a compelling examination of the educational landscape of his time, delving into the complexities of pedagogical theories and institutional frameworks. Styled with clarity and eloquence, Boutwell's prose is reflective and persuasive, addressing various themes such as the role of government in education, the necessity for reform, and the importance of moral and intellectual development. The book serves as both a critique and a blueprint for educational advancement, situating itself within the context of the post-Civil War era, a time ripe for social and institutional change. George S. Boutwell, an influential educator and politician, made significant contributions to the development of American education during the Reconstruction era. Thoughts on the Education of Daughters Enriched edition. Challenging Gender Norms: A Feminist Perspective on Education Reform【電子書籍】[ Mary Wollstonecraft ]
|

In "Thoughts on the Education of Daughters," Mary Wollstonecraft presents a compelling critique of the contemporary education system for women, advocating for a rational and philosophical foundation in their learning. Written in 1787, this seminal work employs a clear, impassioned prose style that reflects Enlightenment ideals while challenging the subjugation of women through inadequate educational practices. Wollstonecraft posits that a well-rounded education is crucial not just for women's personal development but also for their ability to contribute meaningfully to society. Her arguments anticipate later feminist thought, intertwining notions of ethics, self-discipline, and the moral role of women in the family and society at large. Wollstonecraft's dedication to women's rights and education was informed by her own experiences as a governess and her observations of the societal limitations imposed on women. As a pioneering figure in feminist philosophy, her works often reflect a deep personal conviction about the benefits of education and rationality. Her life experiences, including her struggles against poverty and the constraints imposed by her gender, shaped her passionate appeal for change. I highly recommend "Thoughts on the Education of Daughters" to anyone interested in early feminist literature or the evolution of educational theory. This text not only sheds light on the historical context of women's education but also challenges readers to reconsider the legacies of inequality that persist today, making it a thought-provoking and essential read. National Subcommissions of ICMI and their Role in the Reform of Mathematics Education【電子書籍】

ICMI (or IMUK) was founded in 1908 and initiated the establishment of national subcommissions to launch national activities in response to the IMUK agenda and to promote the reform proposals within each member country. While ICMI’s activities were thoroughly studied, the activities of the national subcommissions are studied only very marginally. In the meantime, their work has been of major importance ? both because of their role in exploring and documenting the development of mathematics education at the beginning of the 20th century, and because of the changes and new ideas which they brought to their countries. Importantly, even if some results of their activities were analyzed within their countries in the corresponding languages, almost nothing is known internationally. This book is planned to deepen our knowledge on at least some of the national subcommissions. The book will interest both researchers and others interested in mathematics education and its development.

A Disquisition on the Evils of Using Tobacco and the Necessity of Immediate and Entire Reformation Urgent Call to Abolish Tobacco for Health and Wellness【電子書籍】[ Orin Fowler ]

In "A Disquisition on the Evils of Using Tobacco and the Necessity of Immediate and Entire Reformation," Orin Fowler presents a compelling and thorough examination of the detrimental effects of tobacco consumption on both individual health and societal well-being. Written in a persuasive yet scholarly tone, Fowler employs a blend of scientific evidence, moral reasoning, and rhetorical eloquence to argue for immediate reform regarding tobacco use. Set against the backdrop of the early 19th century, a period when the tobacco debate was gaining momentum, this treatise effectively addresses the various facets of tobacco's harms, integrating contemporary medical discourse with philosophical insights about personal and communal responsibility. Orin Fowler, a prominent figure in the temperance movement and an advocate for health reform, draws upon his own experiences and observations as a physician and social reformer. His passion for promoting public health and moral integrity, particularly in an era marked by increased tobacco consumption, motivated him to take a staunch stand in this disquisition. Fowler's background in medicine and reformist activism provides a rich context for his arguments, linking personal well-being with broader societal issues. This book is an essential read for those interested in the intersections of health, morality, and society. It not only serves as an informative resource on the perils of tobacco but also invites readers to engage in a deeper reflection on health reform and ethical living. Fowler's meticulous argumentation and penetrating insights make this work a timeless call to action that resonates well beyond its historical moment.

Early Years of Reform【
|

This volume forms part of a five volume set charting the progress of the nineteenth century movement, which was instrumental in establishing international guidelines for the teaching of modern languages. It was during this period that for the first time, co-operation between phoneticians and teachers culminated in the publication of works that were instrumental in establishing the 'applied linguistic' approach to language teaching in the twentieth century. For the first time, too, the new science of psychology influenced a scientific theory of second language acquisition. The Reform Movement attracted support across Europe, spurring the development of new professional associations and journals. In turn, the publication in these journals of reports of innovative practice contributed to a greater sense of autonomy and professionalism among modern language teachers, who had hitherto tended to live under the shadow of classical language teaching. The practical innovations and theoretical suggestions for the foreign language teaching, although rooted in the nineteenth century, still have relevance today.

The Marketplace of Ideas Reform and Resistance in the American University【電子書籍】[ Louis Menand ]

"Crisp and illuminating . . . well worth reading."ーWall Street Journal

The publication of The Marketplace of Ideas has precipitated a lively debate about the future of the American university system: what makes it so hard for colleges to decide which subjects are required? Why are so many academics against the concept of interdisciplinary studies? From his position at the heart of academe, Harvard professor Louis Menand thinks he's found the answer. Despite the vast social changes and technological advancements that have revolutionized the society at large, general principles of scholarly organization, curriculum, and philosophy have remained remarkably static. Sparking a long-overdue debate about the future of American education, The Marketplace of Ideas argues that twenty-first-century professors and students are essentially trying to function in a nineteenth-century system, and that the resulting conflict threatens to overshadow the basic pursuit of knowledge and truth.

Globalisation and Education Policy Reform in Botswana【電子書籍】[ Richard Tabulawa ]
|

This book uses the global?local dialect approach to explicate education policy reform in Botswana and interrogates the practical effects of the various education policies on curriculum, pedagogy and governance of the Botswana General Education system.

Considering the effect of three reform policies since Botswana’s Independence in 1966, the book evaluates the performance of each of the policies and examines their consequences in terms of the interplay of global forces and domestic pressures. The result of this interplay has been an education landscape that, while reflecting globally circulating education discourses, markedly differs from those same discourses. The book argues that the State in Botswana has appropriated education policy to legitimate itself in times of crisis and that each policy has improved access to general education but, collectively, have failed to improve its quality, making suggestions for how this can be improved in the future.

As the first book of its kind to delve into education in Botswana from a single-authored critical lens, the book will be a highly relevant reading for academics, researchers and post-graduate students of African education, comparative education, education policy and curriculum studies.

The School Reform Landscape Reloaded More Fraud, Myths, and Lies【電子書籍】[ Christopher H. Tienken ]
|

The School Reform Landscape Reloaded: More Fear, Myths, and Lies peels back the curtain of school reform to examine the tensions that exist between the democratic and equitable system of public education and the emerging dual system based on elite interests aimed at profit-making and decreasing education equity. The author takes in-depth and controversial look at school reform since the launch of Sputnik I. Education reform events, proposals, and policies are examined through the lens of progressivist philosophy and critical social theory. Some of the issues and policies critiqued include the neoliberal corporate influence on education, the Sputnik myth, A Nation At Risk, standardization, charter schools, and other relevant topics. The author provides an evidence-based view of the free-market reform ideas and he pierces the veil of the new reform policies to find that they are not built upon empirical evidence, but instead rest solidly on foundations of myth, fear, and lies. Ideas for a new set of reform policies, based on empirical evidence and supportive of a unitary, equitable, and democratic system of education are presented.

Education Under Siege Frauds, Fads, Fantasies and Fictions in Educational Reform【電子書籍】[ Arthur Shapiro ]

We Americans seem prone to bandwagon onto fads, particularly now that reforming education has become a national priority. Unfortunately, many of those fads now caroming across our continent are outright frauds; some are fantasies, even fictions. Even more unfortunately, many are undermining our public schools, teachers, kids and communities, and pillaging our tax dollars in the process.
This book analyzes each major reform--No Child Left Behind, Common Core State Standards, grading schools, evaluating teachers, failing students, vouchers, charters, online virtual charters-- and finds them seriously wanting. We conclude with reforms that work actually helping teachers, kids, parents and communities.

The Reform of Education【電子書籍】[ Giovanni Gentile ]
|

In the book, Gentile advocates for a holistic, nationalistic approach to education, where the curriculum would emphasize moral and civic values aligned with the ideals of the state. He proposes that education should not only focus on intellectual development but also on forming citizens who are committed to the nation's ideals. Gentile’s philosophy of education emphasizes the importance of active participation by the student in the learning process, where the individual is seen as a subject who shapes their own understanding through experience and personal engagement with the material.Gentile's work is often associated with the creation of the "active school," a model that encouraged students to engage directly with content rather than passively absorbing knowledge. The book outlines his vision of how education should contribute to the development of a new national consciousness, fostering a sense of duty, loyalty, and identity aligned with Fascist ideals. While his reform proposals were implemented in the context of Italian Fascism, the book remains a controversial work due to its ideological underpinnings.

The Three Waves of Reform in the World of Education 1918 ? 2018 Students of Yesterday, Students of Tomorrow【電子書籍】[ Ami Volansky ]
|

This book reviews one hundred years of educational reforms worldwide. Characterized by a tension between governing public and professional forces, the waves of educational reform reflect myriad efforts to define and fulfill professional and public expectations for the world of education. The first wave of reform, based on “progressive” ideals, spread across the globe after World War I, striving to place the student at the center of the education process and respond to the diverse needs of children and youth in a world that included massive population shifts. The second wave nearly obliterated the ideals of the progressive movement that had prevailed for sixty years. Drawing its principles from the business world, the second wave imposed competition, uniform standards, and measurable outputs on students, teachers, and schools, even at the cost of harming at-risk populations and encouraging the infiltration of private sector values into public education systems.

The third wave was launched at the turn of the twenty-first century. Seeking to adjust instructional methods to modern reality, this reform rejected standardized curricula in favor of developing skills such as independent thinking, curiosity, innovation, collaboration among learners, and the ability to mine and process information.

Book I reviews the three waves of reform in the United States, England, Canada, Japan, Singapore, Hong Kong, Australia, and Finland. Book II focuses on Israel’s education system ー past, present, and future.

Written from a critical perspective, this volume provides teachers, teacher educators, and classroom researchers with a conceptual framework and practical methods for teaching and researching the disciplinary literacy development of English language learners (ELLs). Grounded in a nuanced critique of current social, economic, and political changes shaping public education, Gebhard offers a comprehensive framework for designing curriculum, instruction, and assessments that build on students’ linguistic and cultural resources and that are aligned with high-stakes state and national standards using the tools of systemic functional linguistics (SFL). By providing concrete examples of how teachers have used SFL in their work with students in urban schools, this book provides pre-service and in-service teachers, as well as literacy researchers and policy makers, with new insights into how they can support the disciplinary literacy development of ELLs and the professional practices of their teachers in the context of current school reforms. Updraft Downdraft Secondary Schools In the Crosswinds of Reform【電子書籍】[ Marilyn Crawford ]
|

Ever wonder why there is such a big gap in the number of students who succeed in comparison to those who do not? The duality of educational experiences that permeate our secondary schools leads to one group of students heading into post-secondary education, while others either receive terminal degrees or drop out. This updraft/downdraft phenomena occurs because time, talent, and monies tend to drift into the "updraft" group's educational arena, leaving the "downdraft" students and teachers with less time to teach, fewer qualified teachers, and fewer supporters. This book provides a set of tools to assist schools and communities in reallocating their resources more effectively. Using school "artifacts," educators can collect the data and information needed to make better decisions and leverage what they have, equitably. The process of collecting, analyzing, and acting on the data described promotes more strategic decision-making about school resources. Samples of data and analyses around master schedules, student schedules, curriculum guides and other "artifacts" inside the school and district are provided.

Recommended for anyone seeking ways to understand the problems inside the public schools and ways to find solutions.

Tinkering toward Utopia A Century of Public School Reform【電子書籍】[ David B. Tyack ]
|

For over a century, Americans have translated their cultural anxieties and hopes into dramatic demands for educational reform. Although policy talk has sounded a millennial tone, the actual reforms have been gradual and incremental. Tinkering toward Utopia documents the dynamic tension between Americans’ faith in education as a panacea and the moderate pace of change in educational practices.

In this book, David Tyack and Larry Cuban explore some basic questions about the nature of educational reform. Why have Americans come to believe that schooling has regressed? Have educational reforms occurred in cycles, and if so, why? Why has it been so difficult to change the basic institutional patterns of schooling? What actually happened when reformers tried to “reinvent” schooling?

Tyack and Cuban argue that the ahistorical nature of most current reform proposals magnifies defects and understates the difficulty of changing the system. Policy talk has alternated between lamentation and overconfidence. The authors suggest that reformers today need to focus on ways to help teachers improve instruction from the inside out instead of decreeing change by remote control, and that reformers must also keep in mind the democratic purposes that guide public education.

The Choice We Face How Segregation, Race, and Power Have Shaped America's Most Controversial Education Reform Movement【電子書籍】[ Jon Hale ]

|

A comprehensive history of school choice in the US, from its birth in the 1950s as the most effective weapon to oppose integration to its lasting impact in reshaping the public education system today.

Most Americans today see school choice as their inalienable right. In The Choice We Face, scholar Jon Hale reveals what most fail to see: school choice is grounded in a complex history of race, exclusion, and inequality. Through evaluating historic and contemporary education policies, Hale demonstrates how reframing the way we see school choice represents an opportunity to evolve from complicity to action.

The idea of school choice, which emerged in the 1950s during the civil rights movement, was disguised by American rhetoric as a symbol of freedom and individualism. Shaped by the ideas of conservative economist Milton Friedman, the school choice movement was a weapon used to oppose integration and maintain racist and classist inequalities. Still supported by Democrats and Republicans alike, this policy continues to shape American education in nuanced ways, Hale showsーfrom the expansion of for-profit charter schools and civil rights?based reform efforts to the appointment of Betsy DeVos.

Exposing the origins of a movement that continues to privilege middle- to upper-class whites while depleting the resources for students left behind, The Choice We Face is a bold, definitive new history that promises to challenge long-held assumptions on education and redefines our moment as an opportunity to save itーa choice we will not have for much longer.

Educational Reform and Environmental Concern A History of School Nature Study in Australia【電子書籍】[ Dorothy Kass ]
|

A crucial component of the New Education reform movement, nature study was introduced to elementary schools throughout the English-speaking world in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Despite the undoubted enthusiasm with which educators regarded nature study, and the ambitious aims envisioned for teaching it, little scholarly attention has been paid to the subject and the legacy that nature study bequeathed to later curricular developments. Educational Reform and Environmental Concern explores the theories that supported nature study, as well as its definitions, aims, how it was introduced to curricula and its practice in the classroom, by focusing upon educational reform in the Australian state of New South Wales.

This book explores nature study within the context of broader educational reform movements in a period characterised by a transnational exchange of ideas. It is the only book on nature study available to date that focuses on the history of the movement outside the USA, providing a much-needed alternative perspective. Kass considers nature study as it adapted and changed throughout the twentieth century, addressing the extent to which the nature study idea represented, responded to and even influenced concern about the natural environment.

Educational Reform and Environmental Concern will appeal to researchers, academics and postgraduate students engaged in the study of educational and environmental history. Researchers with an interest in a transnational or imperial approach to the history of education will also benefit from the wealth of comparative material that Kass presents.

Chinese Higher Education Reform and Social Justice【
|

In place of a distributive justice perspective which focuses simply on equal access to universities, this book presents a broader understanding of the relationship between Chinese higher education and economic and social change. The necessity for research on the place of universities in contemporary Chinese society may be seen from current debates about and policy towards issues of educational inequality at Chinese universities. Many questions arise as a consequence: What are the limitations of neo-liberalism in higher education policy and what are the alternatives? How has the Chinese government met the challenges of educational inequality, and what lessons may be learned from its recent initiatives? How may higher education enhance social justice in Chinese society given economic, social, and cultural inequality? What may be learned from the experience of Macau, Hong Kong, and of Taiwan in terms of achieving social justice in Chinese universities? These questions are considered by a group of leading scholars from both inside and outside China.

Educational Research, the National Agenda, and Educational Reform A History【電子書籍】[ Erwin V. Johanningmeier ]

|

Educational Research, The National Agenda, and Educational Reform examines the origins, history, nature, purposes, and status of educational research by focusing on the relationships among educational research, the national agenda, educational reform, and the social and behavioral sciences. Its major claim is that the history of educational research is embedded in the nation’s social, political, intellectual, and economic histories. Attention is given to three significant periods: the Progressive Era when modern educational research began to assume its present form; the Post-World-War-II-Era when educators and educational researchers were directed to return to or turn to the academic disciplines; and the Civil Rights Era after the Supreme Court in Brown ended legal racial segregation and raised questions about equality of educational opportunity that are still with us. These were significant periods when there was a clear national agenda shaped by both public and private agencies. Educators and educational researchers adopted policies and strategies in response to concerns and interests expressed by the public, by government officials, and by philanthropies. Researchers’ responses have had long-term consequences as seen in the reaction to The Coleman Report, debates about the merits of quantitative research as opposed to qualitative research, the ongoing discussion about the merits of No Child Left Behind, the achievement gap, the creation of the Institute of Education Sciences, and the emphasis now placed on 'scientifically-based research.'

The origins of the common school, the work of the philosopher Johann Friedrich Herbart and his followers, and the revolution in scientific method brought about by Charles Darwin’s work are included because they serve as the foundation for educational research. Educational researchers’ identification with and interest in individual performance and ability and their measurement is related to the close relationship educational researchers have had with psychology, a discipline that typically does not focus on social context. The significance of educational researchers’ borrowing from the behavioral sciences, especially psychology, is examined through a discussion of the mental hygiene movement, as supported by private philanthropy, and through consideration of contributors such as G. Stanley Hall, Arnold Gesell, Lewis M. Terman, Daniel Starch, and Stuart A. Courtis.
